REVEREND ALISON WAY
Lammastide
On the first Sunday in August and in the week following at worship across this benefice, we will be marking Lammas or 'Loaf-mass'. The word Lammas is derived from the anglosaxon Hlafmaesse. It is a traditional English feast, held on or around 1st August as thanksgiving for the first-fruits of the wheat harvest. The basis of this celebration was to present before God a newly baked loaf. The principle of this idea was maintained in the Prayer book calendar but not the practice. More recently however, resources have been provided by the Church of England to enable Lammas to be marked as part of the patterns of worship and prayer around the agricultural year. This tallies with our natural instinct in rural communities to reflect on the need to provide food to sustain human life, alongside a sense of due humility before God as a source of all things, gratitude for his goodness, and responsibility in stewarding the resources of the earth. Do come and join us for worship for Lammas to reflect on our first fruit at this harvest, or at any time during August. In addition to Lammas we have 2 patronal festivals to enjoy this month - St Lawrence's (celebrated at Hilmarton on August 9th 2009 at 10:30am) and St Giles' (celebrated at Tockenham on August 30th 2009 at 10:30am). All will be made most welcome.

1) ST BARTHOLOMEWS CHURCH FESTIVAL 2009
A festival for the whole community "The Journey of Life" will take place from Sept 5th to Sept 7th.
There will be produce stalls, crafts, music and readings during each day as well as a concert on Saturday evening and festival services on Sunday.
Open: Saturday 10:00am to 5:00pm, Sunday 12 noon to 5:00pm, Monday 10:00am to 5:00pm.
Children's activities all day Saturday and Sunday afternoon.

2) THE ANNUAL CYCLE RIDE
The Wiltshire Churches Annual Sponsored Ride for cyclists, walkers and horse riders takes place on Saturday 12th September 2009. The aim is to visit as many churches as possible. Sponsor money collected is shared between the Wiltshire Historic Church Trust and a church of your choice. Broad Town Church and many other churches are open for refreshment en route. 3) BENEFICE OUTING 2009

4) AN EVENING WITH RICHARD ANGWIN - Weather forecaster from BBC Points West
Tickets for this event, Saturday October 10th 2009, are selling well. Tickets £10, to include light refreshments, are on sale from Rosie (731526) Kate (731536) or Michelle (731357) The evening is hosted by Broad Town WI and all profits to go to the 5-18 year olds counselling project run by the Swindon Family Mediation Service. All are welcome.. it is not just a WI thing! Time 7.30pm for 8pm.
5) SAFARI SUPPER
Saturday 17th October - £15 per person. Proceeds in aid of the Village Church.
An event like this only works if enough people are willing to participate. To assist with the planning will you please let me know if you are interested and whether you would be prepared to host one course for not more than 10 people.

6) SCARECROW COMPETITION
On the second weekend of June next year we will be holding our second Scarecrow competition. We are hoping to persuade some of the gardeners of the village to open their gardens to the public at the same time. We know that there are some lovely gardens in the village of all shapes and sizes. We do not know who you all are personally, so please do not be shy. If you are willing to open your garden that weekend please contact Margaret Green on 731511.
GOODBYE
On July 17th together with family and friends many villagers filled Christ Church for the funeral of Midge Hatherall. Midge lived practically his whole life in Broad Town, coming to 57 Redhills at the age of 2yrs. Married to Margaret and with daughter Kimberly they lived at 53 Redhills where Midge's gardening skills, especially as a vegetable grower, were on view to all as they passed the end of Redhills. Midge had a wicked sense of humour and a lovely smile... and he loved the horses. Our thoughts and prayers at this time are with Margaret, Kimberly and Lee also with Midge's two sisters who also live in the village.

DECORATION OF THE CHURCH
To all of you who are wondering when your money will be spent:- We all hoped that the decorating would be completed by now and that we would be using a bright and freshly decorated Church. Frustratingly this hasn't happened. Unfortunately we have hit complications. Last time we decorated we put a specialist paint on the walls under guidance of the architect. We have now found out that the walls were too damp and that this is why they have discoloured and we cannot easily paint over it. Currently we are working with the Church authorities, new architect and manufacturer of the paint to find the best way forward. So it all comes down to one thing - watch this space.
BROAD TOWN WI
At the WI meeting on the 15th July, we were pleased to welcome 3 visitors. After a short business meeting covering the introduction of a WI sponsored educational bursary, the forthcoming skittles leagues and future outings and opportunities. The speaker Mrs Susan Howe, a former secretary of Sir John Betjeman gave an interesting and amusing talk entitled “a canter through a funny life". She covered being a London Historical guide, running a country house hotel in Malmesbury and meeting the original Yorkshire Vet on whom the books and TV series were based. The evening ended with a cup of tea and home-made cakes. The next meeting on Wed 19th August is a walk to Clyffe Pypard, followed by a pot luck supper in Chrisse Coney's lovely garden. Starting from the Village Hall car park at 7.15pm.
BROAD TOWN C OF E PRIMARY SCHOOL
What a busy last week of term this one was.
Monday was the postponed sports day - such energetic and fair-minded children. Tuesday the children sang to their parents. Wednesday the Y6 Leavers had their trip.
Friday was the Leavers service in the Church. This was an emotional service with the children reading out their memories of their time at the school. Then each one was presented with a mug, which they had painted, as a leaving present. Thanks were expressed to Daphne who came in to help with the mugs. We wish all the children a happy time at their next school and we hope they will keep in touch.
Tuesday 1st September is a TD day. Wednesday 2nd September Years l - 6 return to school. Thursday 3rd September Reception are in 9.00 - 12.00.
PARISH COUNCIL
1. The seat at the children's play area was removed as it had become the meeting place for youths who drank and left broken glass around the seat. This totally thoughtless behaviour could have resulted in injury to a child. The playground is for children up to 12 years of age - the age of the youths involved was older, but their behaviour more juvenile. The seat will not be replaced until this behaviour has stopped, and then it will not be in the original place. The police are aware of this anti-social behaviour, but I am sure that they would welcome any further information.
2. A summer evening is not the time for smouldering bonfires, but I have received complaints about this happening recently. Please be more considerate.
3. The new edition of the Village Information leaflet is now out, and will be delivered shortly.
BROAD TOWN BIG GIG 2009
Another Big Gig is over! The wettest yet; but we had prepared for it! Thanks to all of you, who despite the weather turned up to support and make the event such an enjoyable `village' occasion. The bands were great, and the beer good.
Many thanks to all those who came to help putting up and taking down the marquees; much appreciated.
Special thanks to the Village Hall and Social Club for such tremendous support; also to the WI for looking after those needing sobering up and calories, and to the Parish Plan committee and the pre-school and school PTA.
Before you forget the Big Gig for another year, could you spare an evening a month from January to June, would you like to get to know people in the village, would you like to be part of an event that is great fun? Think about it ; if so please phone and have a `no commitment' chat — Marcus Galea 731816.

THE GUILD OF WILTSHIRE ARTISTS
Run workshops at the Village Hall on every third Saturday of the month from 10am to 4pm. All are welcome including painters who are beginners.
Tea and Coffee provided but do bring a packed lunch.
Help will be given to those who request it.
