REVEREND ALISON WAY
Holiday reading
As I write I have just returned from my main summer holiday of the year, staying on Seil Island in the western highlands of Scotland. Much to my surprise, the weather was excellent with wall to wall sunshine, with some hot days and some days a pleasant temperature for walking. The spectacular surroundings and glorious scenery were breathtaking at times, particularly with the backdrop of a deep blue sky and sunshine thrown in.
It is always good to have a long and relaxing break away from it all, and I hope you too have refreshing and renewing timeout this summer. I acknowledge for some that the financial situation has curtailed our plans and activities in this regard, but I hope some time and space for ourselves can be found even in these difficult times.
I recently came across an interesting book, which I commend to you as a good ‘holiday’ read. It is called ‘The Shack’ and is written by WM Paul Young (published by Windblown media – ISBN 978 0 340 97949 5). The byline for it is ‘where tragedy confronts eternity’ and it will definitely make you think (probably laugh and it has challenging sections too!) I found that once I had started, it was a pretty compelling and thought-provoking read. I wanted to know what was coming next. I don’t want to say too much about the plot, so if you do read it, I don’t let the proverbial cat out of the bag. However, I would be interested to know what you make of it, if you do give it a go!
Greetings and the love of Christ to you all in the benefice of Woodhill (formerly the benefice of Broad Town, Clyffe Pypard, Hilmarton and Tockenham).

GOODBYE
Sadly we mark the passing of two villagers this month.
Both Irene Chivers and Herbert Bishop had lived in the village many years and will be greatly missed. We extend our sympathy to both families.
ART EXHIBITION
Many Thanks to those who visited and helped at the Art Exhibition in Christ Church. Some of you enjoyed the pictures enough to make purchases. Over £400 was raised for Church funds
SCHOOL FETE
A great big thank you to the organisers of the fete, to the stall holders and the exhibitors: to the run organisers and runners; and to the football organisers and children for a wonderful afternoon. The School staff worked very hard to put together such a great time. Their effort was rewarded by the number of people who turned up and spent well over £4,000; from this figure expenses still have to be deducted.
BROAD TOWN PRE-SCHOOL
Thank you for all the support we received at the school fete. It was a very successful day for us and we raised £288
Our Forest School is up and running. We are spending most sessions in our woodland area doing different activities which include laying paths, climbing trees, exploring the environment, making a shelter and using our imagination to tell stories and construct a “Badger Bridge”. Any enquiries please telephone Anne Knight on 731911.
INANE BEHAVIOUR
Older children have been using the school grounds and playing with the Pre-school equipment to the extent that some were caught coming down Broad Town hill on a Pre-school scooter. May we remind the older children that the School grounds are not your playground.
RE-CYCLING LITTER
Much of the litter in the School playground is from the area of the re-cycling bins. We are asking that if you bring anything to the bins in a carrier bag, you take the bag home again with you.
BROAD TOWN WI
The members at the June meeting of Broad Town WI were treated to a talk by Ceri Cryer - local artisan cheesemaker and Wessex business women of the year. Ceri explained her journey from local farmers daughter to Oxbridge science graduate to Brinkworth cheese maker. The talk was both touching and informative - we now know a lot more about Wiltshire milk maids and Ceri 's courting days. The tastings were met with approval and demands for seconds.
Next month the WI will be at the Broad Town Big Gig on Sat.July 11th providing delicious homebaked cakes and biscuits with teas and coffee all evening to compliment the BBQ and Bar. Come and visit our tent.
The next meeting in the Village Hall will be on 15th July 7.30pm when we will welcome speaker Susan Howe. The title of her talk is cantering through a funny life and comes highly recommended.
PARISH PLAN QUESTIONNAIRE
As previously advised the Parish Plan Steering Group has now compiled the Parish Plan questionnaire and this will be hand delivered to you in the w/c 6th July. It is a more in-depth questionnaire, building upon the responses you gave in the likes-dislikes survey last year, which gives you a great opportunity to have your say and help shape the future of Broad Town. We appreciate it is a large questionnaire, but a great deal of thought (and effort!) has gone into making the questions pertinent and relevant to our community, so please encourage everyone in your household to complete it. We will be collecting your completed questionnaire personally the w/c 20th July, so please have it ready for us. Thank you, the PPSG.
