REVEREND ALISON WAY

What is in a name? Part two. Back in August 2008 I wrote about our quest for a shorter name for our benefice, asking for suggestions. I wrote then: - ‘Our collection of parishes, called a benefice goes by the following name: the benefice of Broad Town, Clyffe Pypard, Hilmarton and Tockenham. This is a bit of a mouthful, and now six months in, I can say it without a pause half way through, but it is not very user-friendly. On paperwork our name often gets shortened to ‘Broad Town et al’, which is great for those who live in Broad Town parish, but doesn’t represent our other parishes, which are of equal importance. Other benefices have come up with an over-arching identity; a shorter and more user-friendly and inclusive name. This changes nothing in terms of how the parishes operate and flourish, or work together, but does make our life together easier to describe’.

From this, a number of suggestions were forthcoming, and the churchwardens and then each Parochial Church Council across the benefice has agreed that in due course we will become the benefice of Woodhill. This suggestion was made by Margaret and Clive Green from Broad Town (many thanks!). It is in part due to the site of the medieval settlement of Woodhill, which is around about the central point of the benefice, but more importantly encapsulated the wooded hill, which runs though the benefice as a whole, and is visible from virtually all of it. Though nothing else is going to change, we are going to begin to use our new name from now on (subtitled for clarity the benefice of Broad Town, Clyffe Pypard, Hilmarton and Tockenham) as we await the lengthy process within the Church of England and Parliament to change the name.

For any budding designers/artists out there - What we could really use now is a simple black and white logo for the benefice of Woodhill. If you would like to design or draw something for that, please submit it to me at the Vicarage by the end of June (A5 size as a maximum). A small prize will be awarded to the logo we choose to use.

SCARECROW COMPETITION

Last call for the Scarecrow Competition. If you wish to take part and make a scarecrow for the competition please could your entry sheet plus £2 be with Mrs Green at 1 Broadacres by Monday 4th May at the latest. If you have lost your entry form, all we need to know is Name of scarecrow, makers name and address on a piece of paper.

COFFEE MORNING

Come along to the Church on the 30^th May, have a coffee and a chat buy some plants and try your luck on the Tombola stall. Open from 10am.

BROAD TOWN WI

In April Broad Town WI enjoyed a meeting at the Trotting Horse at Bushton discussing the proposed national WI resolution - the plight of honey bees and the future implications for British agriculture. Added interesting information was provided by a local beekeeper - Mr Jeff Clewley. A vote taken gave an overwhelming majority for the resolution. The evening was rounded off by a game of skittles and refreshments.

May’s meeting of the Broad Town WI will be back in the Village Hall on Wednesday 20^th at 7.30 pm for a short AGM followed by a Salsa taster session so we suggest you come dressed for energetic activity.

BROAD TOWN PARISH COUNCIL

1. The Annual Meeting of the Parish Council will be held on 11th May 2009 in the Village Hall at 19.30hrs.

2. Mr Simon Billis, 731188, has been co-opted onto the Parish Council as a member.

3. Dogs on Redhills. The PC has received complaints that dogs are being allowed on the playing field at Redhills. You are reminded that this area is prohibited to dogs, although common sense should indicate this.

Please do not allow dogs to mess on private grass areas next to the pavement on the main road. The owners of the land do not wish to clear up what your dog leaves behind.

4. Roads, etc. Wiltshire Highways has asked that we remind you that any defects in roads, etc, should be reported to CLARENCE (freephone) 0800 232323, or clarence@wiltshire.gov.uk. This is the quickest way to get things done.

5. Children playing on bicycles on the hill behind Littletown Farm have vandalised the fences several times. The Police have been informed. If your children have been involved, please advise them.

6. Goal Posts. Last year the Parish Council had to replace the cross bars on the goal posts at Redhills because they were damaged by children swinging on them. Fortunately some of those involved helped to defray part of the cost. Young children have recently been climbing on the goal posts again. Please warn your children not to; the next time damage occurs the Council may have to take more formal action.

BROAD TOWN PRE-SCHOOL

We had a fantastic morning on Thursday 2^nd of April for our “Bring your parent to pre-school” session. It was great to see so many Mums and Dads joining in with their children to do Easter activities. These included bunny masks, nests and Easter pictures, as well as stories and songs. We had positive feedback from parents, with one saying their favourite part was story-telling and songs. A big thank you to all parents for taking time out from their busy schedules to spend the morning with us.

We have sessions available and would welcome parents and children (age 2 – 5 years) to visit by contacting Anne Knight on 731911.

THE PARISH PLAN STEERING GROUP

The Parish Plan Steering Group has been extremely busy this year, but what have we been doing? Following on from the Likes/Dislikes questionnaire, which many of you completed last year, we have been constructing an in-depth questionnaire to more fully extract and explore the issues, wants and needs of our parish. As you can imagine this is not a quick undertaking and we have steadfastly met every two weeks, except for holiday periods, to progress this. Compiling a constructive questionnaire is also a skilful process; the data and views collected from you will only be as good as the questions asked and we've certainly found it challenging ensuring the questions are accurate, pertinent and get to the heart of the matter.

So when can you expect to receive your questionnaire and what will happen after that? We hope to finalise the questionnaire by the end of May, after which we will print and distribute to the whole parish for your completion. Once we've collated your responses there will be a period of data analysis to make sense of all the valuable information, which will feed into the Parish Plan. However, before the Plan can be published a number of other vital tasks must be completed which include creating a draft Plan, a public meeting to feedback results to the parish, consultation with relevant Agencies on the content, and finally print and publish the Plan. So do watch out for our progress updates in this newsletter and in the Gazette and Herald. Finally, regarding the questionnaire data analysis, if anyone feels they have the appropriate specialist skills to carry out this task (with input from the Steering Group) please contact Andrew Law, Secretary (Tel: 01793 731472) or Mark Cowtan, Chairman (Tel: 01793 739247 or 07767 851015). There is funding available to pay for this service.

BROADTOWN BIG GIG

This year's BIG GIG is happening; Saturday 11th July 2009. Our Band's line up include Dave Mwaniki, Studio Arcade, Jon Trowbridge Band, Teddy White Band, and The Mill

Beer provided by the Five Bells of Wootton Bassett. BROAD TOWN OIL SYNDICATE

It's the Oil Syndicate's third birthday - our first order was back in March 2006. Since then we have ordered over one third of a million litres and shared savings over £10,000. Oil prices rose from 26p/litre to almost 55p/litre and returned to 28p/litre for our most recent order. We've always got a decent discount over the prices available for one off orders.

We have members from the fringes of Wootton Bassett, Broad Town, Broad Hinton, Winterbourne Bassett, Clyffe Pypard and Bushton. I would love to see it spread wider. CAR BOOT SALE

A modest garage sale has become, by popular request a car boot sale. To be held on the Sunday 24^th May 2009. It is to be held in the field opposite Christ Church, Broad Town. Gates will open at 9.00am. Sellers can set-up from 8.00am. To book a pitch for £5.00 per car and £8.00 per van (or car + trailer) call Morag on 731492. Please leave your name and telephone number on the answer phone if calling before 6.30pm.

There will be an entry fee on the gate of 50p per person. Refreshments should also be available, but have yet to be confirmed. Ample off road parking provided.

BENEFICE OUTING 2009

Jackie and Trish are again organising a Benefice outing. This year we have arranged to visit Hereford Cathedral. The Cathedral also houses the Mappa Mundi and chained library (which you can choose to visit as an extra on the day). The date for the visit is Friday October 9^th. Letters with full information and booking forms will be available from mid May from Trish 01249 760638, Jackie 01249 760255, Adele at Hilmarton Post Office and the Benefice Churches. Do join us if you can. Tickets will be allocated on a “first come” basis. Final numbers are necessary by the middle of August.

THE GUILD OF WILTSHIRE ARTISTS

Run workshops at the Village Hall on every third Saturday of the month from 10am to 4pm. All are welcome including painters who are beginners.

Tea and Coffee provided but do bring a packed lunch.
