REVEREND ALISON WAY
Harvest, stewardship and hope
During October in the churches across the benefice of Woodhill, we will be giving thanks for the harvest in special celebrations at each Church and over tea or supper. Harvest affords us a great opportunity to reflect and to bring our thanksgivings to God. Our harvest festival services fall as follows: -
- Sun 4th October 9:15am Family Harvest Communion at St Lawrence’s, Hilmarton
- Sun 4th October 11:00am Family Harvest Communion at St Peter’s, Clyffe Pypard
- Sun 4th October 6pm Harvest Songs of Praise at Christchurch, Broad Town
- Sun 18th October 9:15am Family Harvest Communion at St Giles’, Tockenham
On other Sundays in October we will be continuing our focus on the Christian principles underlying giving, thanksgiving and stewardship, including an opportunity to review our individual approach as Christians.
Also coming up soon, on Sunday 1st November we will be holding a benefice-wide service in commemoration of the departed, called “Remembering in Hope”. This will take place at St Giles’ Tockenham at 6:00pm and allows us an opportunity to remember with thanksgiving before God, those who have been significant in our lives and have died. If you wish to have a loved one remembered by name in this service, please let me have the name by getting in touch with me at the usual phone number or e-mail address, or by writing the name clearly in the “Remembering in Hope” book, which will be available at Church worship at services during October.
Greetings and the love of Christ to you all in the benefice of Woodhill (formerly the benefice of Broad Town, Clyffe Pypard, Hilmarton and Tockenham).

5) BROAD TOWN BIG GIG 2009 AGM
Before you forget the Big Gig for another year, could we remind you that this year’s AGM is on Monday 9th November 2009, 8pm in Broad Town Village Hall. At this meeting the current chairman, secretary and treasurer will report on this year’s event, they will stand down and a new committee will be up for (re)election; discussions about next year’s village show / big gig will follow.
Could you spare an evening a month from Jan to June, would you like to get to know people in the Village, would you like to be part of an event that is great fun? Of course you do!
If so please phone and have a ‘no commitment’ chat – Marcus Galea 731816 or come to the AGM and have a ‘no commitment’ drink. We really do need new interest if the Big Gig is to continue. Thank you again for your support of the event.
6) SCARECROW COMPETITION
On the second weekend of June next year we will be holding our second Scarecrow competition. We are hoping to persuade some of the gardeners of the village to open their gardens to the public at the same time. We know that there are some lovely gardens in the village of all shapes and sizes. We do not know who you all are personally, so please do not be shy. If you are willing to open your garden that weekend please contact Margaret Green on 731511.
SAFARI SUPPER
We regret that this has been postponed indefinitely as there was not enough interest shown by the villagers. Our thanks to those who did contact the organiser.
BROAD TOWN SCHOOL
The School are collecting the Times Books for Schools Tokens again. Any donations from the village would be gratefully received and put to good use. Thank you in anticipation.
BROAD TOWN PARISH COUNCIL
1. There are some errors in the latest edition of the Village Information Leaflet.
a. On the list of Parish Councillors, Mrs Newman's initial should be 'J'
b. The Chairman of the Show Committee is Marcus Galea.
2. At the last meeting of the Parish Council it was decided that the maximum age for children using the play area at Redhills is to be 13 years. A notice to this effect will be posted.
3. Bonfires, Fireworks etc. The Parish Council has, yet again, received complaints about smouldering bonfires, with particularly nasty smoke, and fireworks being set off late in the evening with no thought for children or animals. Please give some thought to your neighbours. And with the fireworks season upon us, if you intend to hold a party other than on 5th November, please let people know.
BROAD TOWN VILLAGE HALL
Congratulations and Happy 40th Birthday, 21 September 1969 - Broad Town's new village hall was officially opened by Wiltshire's Chief Education Officer, John Bradley.
Mr Bradley said he realised the tremendous value to the village of a "co-operative effort" like the village hall. It was built by the villagers for the villagers.
BROAD TOWN WI
The Broad town WI met after a short summer break back in the village hall on the 3rd Wednesday of September and were treated to a talk and presentation on Tristan da Cunha the remotest island in the world, by Richard Grundy, a former teacher there. We were fascinated by the history, wild life and stories of the current 254 inhabitants.
This months talk on Wednesday 21st October at 7.30pm in the Village Hall will be on the benefits and uses of Aloe Vera.
All visitors are welcome and under no obligation to join the WI.
BROAD TOWN PRE-SCHOOL
A warm welcome back to everyone, hope you enjoyed the summer break. We have been celebrating birthdays and the Jewish New Year ‘Rosh Hashanah’ and the children have started to self register. We enjoyed our story time with Class 1 at Broad Town School about ‘The Enormous Pumpkin’. We are planning a cook out before half term in our forest school. For any enquiries telephone Anne Knight on 731911. We have sessions available Monday to Friday am and pm.
THE GUILD OF WILTSHIRE ARTISTS
Run workshops at the Village Hall on every third Saturday of the month from 10am to 4pm. All are welcome including painters who are beginners.
Tea and Coffee provided but do bring a packed lunch.
Help will be given to those who request it.
Contact telephone numbers 731154, 731519.
