REVEREND ALISON WAY
Holistically
Adverbs are part of our every day speech that describe how we are going to do things! At the annual parochial meetings of the parishes within the benefice of Woodhill this spring, I talked about concentrating on three adverbs during 2010. The third and final adverb we touched on was holistically and in particular working to promote wholeness. This means working together so everyone can fulfil their potential and can express their unique gifts and talents as God has given them, so we experience the ‘abundant lives’ Jesus envisages for us (see John 10:10 for more details – Jesus said ‘I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly’).
Though in the benefice we had put an emphasis on promoting wholeness in our worship as we welcome some new worship leaders, at the root of it is the reality that things go best for us as individuals when we are following the way that God has for us. This means also living lives in balance without too much stress or too little, and taking time to take care of ourselves in body, mind and spirit. We promote our own wholeness as individuals and a community when our faith is really worked out in our lives and visible (and informing all the choices we make). Faith needs to be acted on and central to truly live holistically. This means we live for God, first, foremost and uppermost in our hearts and in response to God’s generous love for us.
Living holistically and in tune with our whole selves in relationship with our loving God is liberating and deeply inspirational, and I hope 2010 will continue to be marked by thankfulness, prayerfulness and seeking wholeness.
With love in Christ, Alison Way

SCARECROW TRAIL & OPEN GARDENS WEEKEND
A huge thank you to everyone who participated, helped and supported the village weekend. We were thrilled to have so many Scarecrows and of such a high standard. The weather was ideal and we had many visitors to the gardens - everyone seemed to enjoy the weekend and we are pleased to report we made a profit of £730. A particular thank you, to Janice & Keith Griffin, for the wonderful BBQ on Sunday. The whole event was co-ordinated by Clive and Margaret Green who worried and worked out the details and we are extremely grateful for all their hard work. Now there is only one decision - shall we do it all again next year - watch this space! The winners of the scarecrows was 1st The Chivers family with 4 & 20 Black birds; 2nd the Jordan family with Dr Foster and 3rd the Richardson family with Humpty Dumpty.
The winners of the gardening quiz were joint 1st Wendy Cameron-Street and Carolyn Crocker.
BROAD TOWN SCHOOL
Many thanks to everyone who helped to make the school fete such a great success. Once again, it was a brilliant day where lots of money was raised for school funds. The day had a real community atmosphere with lots of interesting things to watch and do. A very special thank you to Tracey Lundy and Richard Wylie who worked non-stop to ensure the day was brilliant.
RECYCLING
The Village paper, bottles, cans and clothing recycling bins in the School grounds generate a modest income for the School based upon the quantity collected.
Even with the growth of the kerbside boxes and the relative simplicity of recycling in them it would be helpful to the School if villagers would just put their paper, bottles and cans in the large bins at the School.
SUPPORT FOR SOUTH AFRICAN CHILDREN
A coffee morning held at the home of Janice & Keith Griffin in June resulted in proceeds of £267.00 which will be for the benefit of two Pre-Schools in Townships near Port Elizabeth, South Africa. This together with some private donations and funding from other events will enable the Wootton Bassett & District Rotary Club to continue its support for a feeding programme for over 200 children and will help to pay the annual salary of a teaching assistant.
Sincere thanks to all those who generously supported our event.
CAR BOOT SALE
Some members of the Church are attending a boot sale on 11th July to raise money for the Church. If anyone has any small items which are now of no use to them and is prepared to donate them to a worthy cause, then please contact Sara on 731114.
VILLAGE HALL
The AGM of the Village Hall was held last month when all the existing long standing officers agreed to stand again. The committee is smaller than we would wish and if you use the Hall regularly or are interested in helping to maintain it for the future please consider joining the present committee.

BROAD TOWN WI
The WI were treated to an enthusiastic and engaging presentation called 'Living the Good Life at Folly Cottage' from Sarah and Andy Larkins of Folly Field smallholding in Cotmarsh. We learned how their smallholding has grown in a short time from having 3 laying hens to 50, with many being rescued battery hens! And they have learned that naming their pigs (Tom, Barbara, Margot, Gerry, Delia and Nigella to name a few) makes saying 'goodbye' that bit harder. Sarah talked about the differences between the breeds they keep, both hens and pigs, and how their natural farming methods (GM free, medication free feed and free range outdoors) differ from the meat mass produced for supermarkets. It was quite an eye opener!
To round off the evening Andy Larkins, who had been slaving over a hot stove, brought us samples of the fruits of their labours: slow roasted pork and two types of bacon. The sounds of 'mmmm', 'delicious' and 'amazing' followed as we eagerly tucked in and discovered for ourselves the difference between their carefully raised pork and the pork bought in supermarkets.
Broad Town WI meet every third Wednesday of the month and our next meeting is on 21st July when the subject will be 'Digging into Family History'. Visitors and new members are always warmly welcomed, so please feel free to contact Jenny (President) tel: 739268 or Jenni (Secretary) tel: 731716. Don't worry, you don't have to be called Jennifer to join the Broad Town WI!
BROAD TOWN PARISH PLAN STEERING GROUP
The Committee are now busy writing the Parish Plan for publication, so if you think we've gone a bit quiet, that's the reason!
Meanwhile, just a reminder that if you missed the Presentation of the questionnaire analysis, a hard copy is in the Village Hall for anyone who has not yet seen it, or you can access it on the Broad Town website - www.broad-town.co.uk.
The Special Interest Groups (SIGS) who have recently formed - RIGHTS OF WAY, COMMUNITY SHOP, YOUTH CLUB AND HOUSING/VILLAGE IDENTITY will be giving separate updates as and when they happen. It's still not too late to join any of these groups, just contact us - (please call Mike Broomfield on 01793 731893), and we'll put you in touch with the relevant people. We will also have news on NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH soon.
We're still looking for volunteers for TRAFFIC, VILLAGE IDENTITY, AND ENVIRONMENT (flooding, air pollution, noise pollution, village tidy, waste collection etc). Again, please give us a call if you're interested in taking any of these issues further.
BROAD TOWN BOOK CLUB
Meets on the last Thursday of every month, for lively discussion and occasional theatre and cinema trips.
If you're interested in joining contact Rosie Law rlaw@stlukes.swindon.sch.uk
Our next meeting is Thursday 29th July when we will be discussing `We're all made of glue' by Marina Lewycka.
