REVEREND ALISON WAY
Prayerfully
Adverbs are part of our every day speech that describe how we are going to do things! At the recent batch annual parochial meetings of the parishes within the benefice of Woodhill I talked about concentrating on three adverbs during 2010. The second adverb we touched on was prayerfully and the importance of living prayerfully. Talking to God in prayer is part of the Christian existence and a vital part of our daily journey. Whenever we stop and pause to reflect, this is such a good opportunity to say a prayer too.
Praying together is also part of our worship as a church. I am very grateful to our team of faithful team of intercessors who lead our prayers regularly and enrich our worship so graciously. I would love others to join them (and if you think that could be you please get in touch). During the course of this year, we will also be looking at better supporting all aspects of our work with prayer.
The truly amazing thing about prayer is that it really works. Many answers to prayer may surprise us and be different from our first desire, but they are answers none the less from our loving God. So I am clear that an adverb to describe our way of being Christians in our communities is prayerfully. Rooting everything in prayer, keeps us in touch with the faith that sustains us in what we are doing and enables us to embrace concerns close at hand and far away.
Next month I’ll talk about the third adverb we thought about at the annual parochial meetings – but for now let’s proceed ever onward into 2010 prayerfully.
With love in Christ, Alison Way

For the lovely presentation he and his family gave at the Scarecrow workshop. We got lots of ideas and if anyone was unable to attend but would like a print out of the power point presentation, then phone 731511 for a copy.
CONGRATULATIONS
To the 12 children and parents of Broad Town who recently entered Wootton Bassett Carnival with a float decorated as an “English Country Garden”. The children worked really hard painting and model making. Their efforts were rewarded with a Cup and also prize money. The money has been donated to the White Horse Preservation Society which will go towards next year’s liming.
KAREN CARPENTER TRIBUTE CONCERT
Friday 11th June at 7.30pm in Broad Town Church. There are still tickets available for £5 each from Sara (731114) or Margaret (731511) and Janet (850931). We are looking forward to a great evening in which to reminisce with the old songs. There will be refreshments and a raffle. Tickets will be available on the door.
SCARECROW COMPETITION
The entries are coming in so we expect to see some interesting scarecrows around the village over the weekend. You are the judges so come to 1 Broadacres to pick up a sheet with a map and addresses of the scarecrows so that you can go round and see them and judge.
Sheets will be available from 10am Saturday 12th June till 4.30pm Sunday 13th June and must be back at 1 Broadacres by 5pm on the Sunday.
If you have lost your entry form, just write your name, name of the scarecrow and address on a piece of paper and put it through the door of 1 Broadacres, with the £2 entry fee.
The results will be in next month's newsletter
GARDENS OPEN
12th /13th June, as you see the scarecrows you can visit a few gardens open in the village. On Sunday from 12noon till 2.30pm there will be a BBQ in one of the gardens. So enjoy a great day out and come and be nosey.
BROAD TOWN SCHOOL
School fete from 1pm
This is also on Saturday 12th June incorporating the fun run. There will be the usual stalls such as bottle stall, cakes, refreshments, plant stall and games etc..
So come and enjoy a whole village weekend of fun with the school and the rest of the village.
YOUTH CLUB
Great news for everyone who is keen to see a Youth Club being started in Broad Town! A meeting has been arranged through the Broad Town Parish Plan Steering Group on Friday 11th June from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Village Hall with Damian Haasjes from Wiltshire Council Youth Development Service. Damian is coming along to explain how a Youth Club can be set up and what support and advice the Youth Service and Youth Action Wiltshire can provide. Damian said that he would like to see young people from the Village at the meeting to find out what they would like from their own Youth Club - as well as parents and other adults who want to know more about what is involved in organising and running a Youth Club. If you have any queries, comments, or simply would like to confirm that you can come along, please e-mail Lorraine Billis on lorraine@mrsbillis.co.uk. Please please attend this meeting if you would like to see a Youth Club started for the young people of Broad Town (under 16s accompanied by an adult please), this is a fantastic opportunity that Damian is providing for us.
BROAD TOWN WI
The Broad Town WI broke with tradition last month and held their meeting and AGM on Saturday 22nd May at Lydiard House with a guided walk around the restored gardens.
The June meeting will be back to the Hall on 16th June with a new committee and president. Our speaker will be Sarah Larkin from Folly Farm at Cotmarsh giving us an insight into “Life on a small holding”. Visitors are very welcome.
BROAD TOWN PARISH PLAN STEERING GROUP
A big thank you to all those who attended our Special Interests Groups (SIGS) meeting on the 7th May. We're really pleased to say that as a result several groups are now up and running - RIGHTS OF WAY, COMMUNITY SHOP, YOUTH CLUB (please see separate write-up), and HOUSING/VILLAGE CENTRE.
The NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH SIG will call a meeting soon to discuss support for setting up a scheme in Broad Town. PC Singfield, our community policeman, was unfortunately unable to talk to us on the night due to a call-out.
Groups yet to be formed are TRAFFIC, VILLAGE IDENTITY, and ENVIRONMENT (flooding, air pollution, noise pollution, village tidy, etc). The responses on the original questionnaire showed interest in all of these, but we're still looking for more volunteers to come forward and offer their support.
If you couldn't make it to the meeting on the 7th May, but are still interested in joining any of the above Special Interest Groups, please contact us and we will put you in contact with them. Or if you have any skills you can offer, either to the Special Interest Groups or to the Parish Plan Steering Group, (e.g. local knowledge, photography, research information, writing and typing reports, etc.), we'd like to hear from you. Please call Mike Broomfield on 731893, or e-mail michaelbroomfield@btinternet.corn.
If you are interested in forming any other Special Interest Groups, then please contact us. Results of any project achieved or underway before the plan goes to print will be included.
On another note, if you have had problems accessing the questionnaire analysis on the Broad Town website (www.broad-town.co.uk), a hard copy is now in the Village Hall. We'll also have a copy on our stand at the School Fete on the 12th of June.
BROAD TOWN SHOP - Special Interest Group
One of the things highlighted in the recent Broad Town questionnaire was that many people would be interested in a shop in the village. A small number of us have started to consider the feasibility of this, and we would welcome other volunteers. Also, we are keen to better understand the needs people would have of a shop.
If you would like to be involved or to make your views known please contact Sarah Larkins 01793 731962 or sarah@learningforce.co.uk
CAR BOOT SALE
Some members of the Church are soon intending to attend a boot sale to raise money for the Church. If anyone has any small items which are now of no use to them and is prepared to donate them to a worthy cause, then please contact Sara on 731114.
BIG GIG - 4th September 2010
Thanks to all who attended the Little Gig on the 14th May, a very successful night and we hope you had a good time. We’d be interested in your feedback on the bands and whether you’d like to see more live music events in the Village Hall.
With regards to bands at the Big Gig, we are planning on bringing you the most music packed event yet – TEN bands or artists will perform on the night, split between two stages. We are still seeing as much live music as possible and are planning a real diverse mix of genres – keep an eye on the website for updates.
We have set the ticket prices for this year’s event – unfortunately price increases are necessary although we have restructured the price bands to try and mitigate the cost for a whole family. Ticket prices are as follows: Adults over 16: £15 (£12 on production of a student card), 12 – 16 year olds inclusive: £5 and under 12s: free.
However, we will have a stall at the School Fete on the 12th June 2010. If you reserve and pay for your tickets at the School Fete (or directly with us by the 12th June - biggigtickets@broadtownshow.co.uk), we will give you an early bird discount of a whopping 20%.
Feel free to drop us an email on biggig@broadtownshow.co.uk with any suggestions or comments, and don’t forget to follow us on Facebook & Twitter. www.broadtownshow.co.uk
