REVEREND ALISON WAY

Thankfully

Adverbs are part of our speech that modify verbs or clauses of sentences.  Generally they describe how we are going to do things! At the recent batch annual parochial meetings of the parishes within the benefice of Woodhill I talked about concentrating on three adverbs during 2010.  The first was proceeding thankfully and this afforded me another opportunity in the meetings (and now) to thank everyone who works so hard in many different ways to keep our churches and the churchyards in such good order.  This includes those who clean, and arrange flowers, to those who ring bells and sing in choirs, to those who manage our finances and those who cut the grass and so on.
However I also meant being thankful in a wider setting and the importance of living our lives thankfully.  I was recently challenged to think about the day that has passed and find one thing in it to be thankful for.  Sometimes when doing this I found many things to be thankful for in some days.  On other days (usually those that were more trying or difficult) it was a useful exercise in seeing the wood for the trees and what was important.  In its own way it enabled me to see a little glimmer of how the Holy Spirit works in our lives in surprising and breath-taking ways even in the most unlikely circumstances.  In the end there always was something to be thankful for.  Why not try this daily exercise at the end each day with a moment or two in reflection on what has happened that we can be thankful for.
Next month I’ll talk about the second adverb we thought about at the annual parochial meetings – but for now let’s proceed ever onward into 2010 thankfully of course!

FRIENDS OF BROAD TOWN CHURCH AND THE DECORATING

Just to give you an update - the redecoration is going very slowly. We are still in discussion with the architect over what would be best to do with the walls. The advice we have been given does not agree with the specifications for the paint and we have asked for some clarification. At the moment it looks like we have 4 options, at one end just using the paint and always using the same paint, to the other end of taking off the old paint and plaster back to bare stonework and starting again, this drastic option will be very costly.

So to all "Friends" who have not contributed this year we ask - "Please don't forget us". You may not see anything happening but we assure you that we are working hard in the background to end up with the best for the church.

COMPLAINTS ABOUT DOG OWNERS AGAIN!

There have been complaints from Redhills residents about dogs fouling the footpath. They ask that you pick up any mess left by your dog and either take it home or put it in the bin at the bottom of Redhills. Various residents have trod in mess left right outside their gates.

Please also note that dogs are not allowed in the playing field. They ask that you use the various walks around Broad Town and leave the playing field to the children.

8th May 10am - 12noon in Broad Town Church. Mr Bob Clarke has very kindly offered his time on that morning to help anyone who wishes to make a scarecrow but needs a few ideas on how to progress. So do come to see him and glean from his expertise.

8) BROAD TOWN WI

The Broad Town WI were pleased to welcome six visitors to their regular meeting in the Village Hall on the 21st April. After a short business meeting, the speaker for the evening; Mrs Frances Barker was welcomed. Frances is a homeopathic therapist and counsellor. She gave an interesting talk on natural endorphins in the body and how to use them to enhance and enliven ourselves. The evening ended with the usual chat over tea and cakes.

May’s meeting will be a guided walk around the newly restored Lydiard Park gardens on Saturday 22nd May. We will meet at 10am in the cafe next to the car park. June's meeting will be back in the Village Hall on the usual 3rd Wednesday of the month - June 16th. Talks coming up in the near future include Investigating your family history, Life on a small holding and Beer tasting. Visitors are very welcome to come and try us out before committing.

5) THE PARISH PLAN STEERING GROUP

It was a great success and we've had great feedback by those who were able to make it. For those of you who couldn't be there the Presentation slides are now on the Broad Town website broad-town.co.uk, together with a report on the 'Questions, Answers and Comments' session.
What happens now? The Steering Group will start to compile the Parish Plan, which will be adopted by Broad Town Parish Council and Wiltshire Council. As with other Parish Plans, community involvement will help to ensure its success.

How can you help? We're now setting up Special Interest Groups to look at specific issues. The Plan is for the future of the Parish, so the groups will be ongoing. We've already had some success with the traffic speed issue, (metro count and community speed watch). With that in mind, we're hoping that you will join those who have already signed up to one of the Groups. The results of the questionnaire told us that many of you would volunteer your support. For example,

75 of you would volunteer to assist in running a community shop,

29 could help to run a Youth Club,

22 would be interested in coordinating a Neighbourhood Watch scheme

80 of you would help maintain Rights of Way footpaths and 31 of you would help with Bridle Paths,

8 businesses would like a Business Forum,

Many of you showed interest in traffic related issues,

There was also interest in other issues such as Village identity, Village centre, housing, environment (flooding etc), and adult education.

We are holding a Special Interests Group meeting at the Social Club in the Village Hall on Friday, 7th May, starting at 8 p.m.

If you were one of the volunteers, and haven't already signed up, could you please complete the 'Special Interest Groups' form' attached to this newsletter. Please return it to Andrew Law, 1 Pye Lane, Broad Town before the meeting, or return it to us on the night. Additional forms are available from June or Mike on 731893.

The responses from the Questionnaire show that we all want Broad Town Parish to be the best it can be. We need as many volunteers as possible, so please give it serious thought, as we can't take things forward without you!

6) BROAD TOWN PARISH COUNCIL

The AGM of the Parish Council will be held on 10th May 2010 in the Village Hall at 7.30pm.

There have been several complaints about smouldering bonfires on pleasant sunny afternoons. This is very inconsiderate. Please either burn it or douse it.

7) BIG GIG - 4th September 2010 (Little Gig 14th May!)

A little surprise for all you Big Gig fans – we will be holding a ‘Little Gig’ on Friday 14th May in the village hall, 8:00pm onwards – and it’s a recession busting, election avoiding FREE event! We aim to have 3 live acts, a barrel of real ale and are planning a good time for all, so hope to see plenty of you there supporting these skilled musicians who are donating their talents for free. The bar will be open as usual – a big, big thank you to the social club for supporting us yet again. All ages welcome – bring the whole family!

We’re slowly dragging ourselves into the 21st century as we are now on Facebook (so many friends already), plus we also have MySpace, Twitter and Blogspot! All links are available from our website, so feel free to follow the Big Gig via your favourite social network and get the latest info on what’s going on.

We’ve had some success with sponsorship but as ever need more – please think whether you or your employer or someone else you know could help out. We will be producing a programme run of circa 2,000 copies to be distributed around the area prior to the Big Gig, so an advert in the programme will reach out into the community – and remember it is all for a range of good causes, including Help for Heroes. Sponsorship details are available on the website.

Feel free to drop us an email on biggig@broadtownshow.co.uk with any suggestions or comments. www.broadtownshow.co.uk

PS - Thanks to everyone who helped paint the lock up, hopefully it will be less conspicuous from the hill!

Do you need a small stage? The Village Show Committee has acquired a small stage (for use as a B stage at the next Big Gig), but as always we're happy for other village organisations to use it, perhaps for a small donation. The stage is 2.44m square, comes in 4 sections and has 2 heights - approximately 22cm and 50cm. For more info please email biggig@broadtownshow.co.uk.

THE VILLAGE WEBSITE – www.Broad-Town.co.uk

The recent parish plan presentation evening fed back the results of the parish survey. Much emerged from this, including communication, and clubs. These are two areas where the web site can help.

Any local group that would like to better communicate with its members is welcome to have a page (pages if you are bigger) on the site. The same applies if you are not a group but would like to get something off the ground. If you are not a formal group, but are doing something, or did something around the village, I’m very interested. Send me text, send me pictures. For example a working party, at Cotmarsh, dug out the ditch by Folly Cottage last summer. This winter we have avoided the worst of the floods we used to have there. There must be other examples. I know of a plan to clean up the White Horse this year – another opportunity.

There are two discussion forums on the site at the moment. A general forum for Gossip and Chit Chat, and one for Local Ads. It’s not difficult to create more forums - tell me what you would like to discuss. Alternatively; start a conversation in Chit Chat. If it gets large enough then we can transfer it to a proper home. The Parish Plan feedback indicated that eight of the local businesses would value a local business forum. Of course people can, and should, meet in pubs and homes, but we can also have a business forum on the site. Come forward and tell me if you are interested. It’s the work of a moment to get it started!

Contact me on Richard@dynamisys.co.uk or call me on 731225.
