Remembering into Advent

In the Church year, November brings a time for remembering, endings and beginnings. It is also a time of recognizing God’s kingdom all around us and Christ as King. Finally it ends with returning to the beginning with the start of the new Church year on Advent Sunday (28^th November), as our thoughts turn to preparation for the coming of the Christ child this Christmas. To reflect this, our worship pattern has been enriched with opportunities to explore this journey together.

Highlights include:-

On 7^th November at 5pm in Christ Church Broad Town, we will be holding our annual commemoration of the departed called “Remembering in Hope”

On 14^th November we mark Remembrance Sunday with worship and an Act of Remembrance in each community at various times in the morning as detailed in the services

On November 21^st we celebrate the end of the church year with the feast of ‘Christ the King’ with a sung benefice communion. This is the patronal festival for Christ Church Broad Town and takes place there at 10:30am.

On November 28th the new Church year begins on Advent Sunday (November 28^th) with a benefice communion at 10:30am at St Peter’s Clyffe Pypard. That evening we host a VERY special Deanery evening service entitled ‘Looking for the Light’, with super music, a Deanery Choir, thoughts, readings and prayers for Advent at 5pm at St Laurence’s, Hilmarton– a great way to start again.

DEATHS

Alec Ball recently died at his home at 57, Godolphin Close, Freshbrook, West Swindon, SN5 8RN. Alec and wife Frances formerly lived in Redhills, and children Sarah, Louise and Andrew all went to Broad Town Playgroup then onto Broad Town School. We send them sincere condolences.

Broad Town Pre-School and Broad Town School would like to thank Cliff Whiteway, for his practical services at our forest school. He has done a fantastic job and at such short notice! Thanks for coming to our rescue Cliff!!

Cycle Ride 2010. Many thanks to all cyclists and sponsors who made this year’s ride such a success. £406.50 has been sent to the Wiltshire Historic Churches Trust and half of this will come back to Christ Church. A great result!

THE FRIENDS OF CHRISTCHURCH BROAD TOWN

Most villagers will know that the ”Friends of Christ Church Broad Town” was started in October 2003. This fund was to be used for the maintenance of the fabric and building of the church. It may seem that donations have been made and there has been no information as to how or whether money has been spent. To date no money has been spent, this is not for the want of trying. The interior of the church badly needs repainting but the building also has a bit of a damp problem. The PCC has been striving to get the go ahead and will continue to do so. Donations to the fund have been falling off but this month we had a boost of £1000. The fund now stands at £7430. Any redecoration of the church will probably cost more. Please could we ask those who have given in the past to restart donations and new villagers to become "Friends". We ask for a minimum of £12 a year per person and if you can gift aid this it will give us an extra 25p for every £1.

CHRISTMAS COFFEE MORNING

The Church will be holding its Christmas Coffee morning on Sat Nov 27th in the Church on the day before Advent Sunday.

There will be a sales table with Christmas items, Phoenix Cards and Philip Male's renowned wildlife photographs.

The Christmas raffle will be drawn and refreshments will be available. All are welcome from 10.00am - 12.00pm and admission is free.

WI November Meeting - Yertiz Brewery Presentation and Beer Tasting

The 17th November WI meeting is an open evening for all villagers - and not just the ladies. Come along and hear all about a local success story and, even better, sample some of their great beers. Visitors £3 to include a free drink and nibbles. To enable Yertiz to bring enough beer and to avoid disappointment (or worse a dry evening!) please confirm your attendance by 2nd November. At the October meeting of the Broad Town WI an audience of 78 made up of regular WI members and visitors were lucky enough to listen to Steve Williams talk about life in a World War I trench. His collection of props and detailed knowledge brought the topic to life for everyone both young and old. At times the narrative was harrowing, but tempered with the humour and enthusiasm for his subject Steve made the evening a very enjoyable one. There was ample time after the talk to examine in detail all the weaponry and kit that Steve had brought with him. The tea and homemade cakes that followed were almost as popular. A collection made on behalf of the British Legion raised £62.50. Thanks go to the organiser Mrs Rosemary McLaren and all the WI members who volunteered to bake cakes for the event.

BROAD TOWN BIG GIG

The Big Gig committee have had four requests from Village organisations for funding, a decision as to how this years surplus is allocated will be made by the committee by Mid November. The Broad Town Village Show AGM will be on Friday 26^th November at 8pm in the Village Hall. If you would like to get involved in next year’s event or give us feedback on this years event it would be really good to see you there.

COMMUNITY SPEED WATCH

Police mobile speed cameras have now been withdrawn. The Parish Council is considering whether to take part in a Community Speedwatch Scheme as a self-help measure to offset this loss. Responses to the Parish Plan questionnaire showed a majority support for traffic control measures in Broad Town.

Speedwatch gives local people the power to monitor traffic speeds. It requires a minimum of 6 volunteers, one of whom must act as Team Leader. Volunteers, who will work in pairs, will be trained by police officers in the use of hand-held speed devices so that they can record the speed of passing vehicles. Motorists speeding will be sent a warning letter by the police. Further action is taken against persistent offenders, who will be targeted by the Police with a view to issuing a fixed penalty notice or to instigate court proceedings.

Volunteers should be aware that:

There is no upper limit to the number of volunteers. Training would take place in Broad Town and last 2 hours.

The speed measuring device would be shared with other villages. When it is in Broad Town's possession, it is a team decision as to how often and for how long checks are performed. Checks will be during daylight hours.

The locations at which the checks take place must have been subjected to a metrocount, which for this Parish is the Broad Town Road.

The Parish Council is now wishing to identify a Team Leader and Team Members for the proposed Broad Town Community Speedwatch. If you are willing to offer your time to this voluntary scheme, please provide your name, phone and e-mail address (where possible) to Andrew Law at 1 Pye Lane, telephone 731472, e-mail andrewlaw456@tiscali.co.uk., who has agreed to co-ordinate this. Please indicate whether you would wish to be a Team Leader. All names will be forwarded to the Parish Council who will then contact potential Team Leaders to initiate the Scheme. Responses should be forwarded to Andrew Law by Monday 15^th November.

BROAD TOWN NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH

By now everyone should have received an invitation to join the Broad Town Neighbourhood Watch. We would ask those wishing to join to forward their details to their street coordinator in accordance with the guidance in the invitation. We would like to complete our membership list by 1^st November and so responses before that time would be appreciated.

Having established our membership, the next step in early November is to deliver welcome packs to all members.

If anyone has not received an invitation or mislaid their invitation, they can provide their details to me at the following address and I will ensure that they are registered.

LINK 6

Link 6 is a GOOD NEIGHBOUR SCHEME for people who need a little help from time to time. The sort of things we can do include driving to and from hospital appointments, hairdresser, or shopping. We can also take you for a walk, come and have a chat or read to you, maybe change a light bulb or sew a hem. There is no predefined list; if you have a need, we will see what we can do to help.

We also run SOCIAL EVENTS every couple of months. These include such things as a garden party, film shows, Christmas Party, trips to garden centres.

Our aim is to complement other services already in existence, such as Connect and Social services, your family and friends.

WHO CAN USE LINK 6? Anybody who has a need can request our service - there is no age limit; we will however undertake a basic assessment of need. Sometimes the need is temporary , e.g. if you have broken your arm and cannot drive, we may be able to help for a few days until you get a more permanent arrangement in place. We are all CRB checked so we can work with old and young alike.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST? Link 6 receives core funding to enable the service to exist, but that is not enough to pay for everything. We invite people who use the service to make a voluntary donation via a brown envelope. You pay what you can afford, or what you think the service is worth.

HOW DO I USE LINK 6? You call our phone line 01249 892558 between the hours of 10.00 am and 4.00 pm. You may get the answer phone as we do not permanently man the phone. We would ask for 48 hours’ notice at least, as we need to try to match a volunteer to your request. We cannot guarantee that we will always be able to assist, but we will do our level best.

I WOULD LIKE TO HELP – WHAT DO I DO NEXT? We are looking for committee members (not a very arduous task) and also volunteers. Volunteers can specify how much (or little) time they have available to help and will have to undergo a CRB check. You don’t have to be a car driver to be a volunteer, but if you do have a car and a clean driving licence, we would love to hear from you.
