REVEREND ALISON WAY

clip_image002Harvest

Our annual celebrations of the harvest help us to connect with our need to be thankful and to worship our loving God in tune with the seasons and the world around us.  One of my favourite harvest hymns (words written by William Chatterton Dix, with an excellent tune composed by the Arthur Sullivan) captures our need to praise and be thankful with some striking visual imagery: bright robes of gold the fields adorn, the hills with joy are ringing, the valleys stand so thick with corn that even they are singing.

The inspiration for these lines comes from Psalm 65 – which is a song of thanksgiving for the earth’s bounty. Verses 12 and 13 say - the hills gird themselves with joy, the meadows clothe themselves with flocks, the valleys deck themselves with grain, they shout and sing together for joy. I think this helps us to embody and recognize what a natural instinct it is in our lives to praise God in keeping with the seasons of the natural world around us. Do come and join our harvest celebrations in the Churches across the benefice, and liberate the part of your soul which wants to sing and praise God. Please bring something that symbolises harvest for you in 2010 – the more imaginative and linked to your life or experiences of this year the better! The harvest festival services are as follows:

Sunday 26th September 6pm Harvest Songs of Praise at Christchurch, Broad Town

Sunday 3rd October 9:15 Family Harvest Communion at St Giles, Tockenham

Sunday 10th October 9:15 Family Harvest Communion at St Peter’s, Clyffe Pypard

Sunday 10th October 11:00 Harvest Family Service at St Lawrence’s, Hilmarton

GOODBYE SCOTTIE

We say goodbye to Mrs Smith who passed away at the end of last month. Mrs Smith had lived in Church Farm from 1965 to 1987 where she brought up her family. Mr and Mrs Smith reared calves. Mrs Smith was always friendly and caring and ready to help the community.

The family would like to say a big "Thank you" to all who came to the funeral and who so kindly gave donations to The Alzheimer Society and Anzac House.

BIG GIG - 4th September 2010: Broad Town Village Show Field

By the time you read this we will hopefully have sold almost every ticket - if you haven't got yours yet, get cracking! We will be utilising the two large marquees, additional tents and the new stage cover, so don't worry if the forecast is a bit iffy, come along and have a great time anyway.

Remember we have a fantastic line-up of 10 (TEN!) live acts with a broad range of musical genres and styles; acoustic to hard rock, blues to indie with a choir thrown in for good measure, so something for everyone there! And don't forget the other fun lined up - bucking bronco, drum workshops etc - it's going to be the best yet.

If you have not bought your tickets yet, contact James on 731108 or email biggigtickets@broadtownshow.co.uk asap - hopefully there will be some left. We also have ticket outlets at Bassett Books in the High Street, Wootton Bassett, and the Post Office in Broad Hinton. Remember, at least 25% of all profits will go to Help for Heroes, so round up friends, relatives and strangers and bring them along. Looking forward to seeing you all on the 4th September, gates open 16:30, first band on at 17:00.

Ticket prices are as follows: Adults over 16: £15 (£12 on production of a student card), 12 - 16 year olds inclusive: £5 and under 12s: free.

Feel free to drop us an email on biggig@broadtownshow.co.uk with any suggestions or comments, and don't forget to follow us on Facebook & Twitter. www.broadtownshow.co.uk

Please support the event; it really is 'Music and Fun for all'; remember any surplus monies also benefit the whole Village community.

PS; If you are feeling energetic 'Tent Erection' is happening Bank Holiday Monday 30th August ; Show Field 3pm; Many hands make light work so please help if you can - there's beer afterwards!

BIKES AND BOOKS COFFEE MORNING

THE BIKE RIDE On Saturday 11th of September 10am - 12noon and 2pm — 4pm in Christ Church, Broad Town there is an opportunity to take part in the Historic Churches Trust Bike Ride without the discomfort of the weather or the hills. Two exercise bikes will be set up in the Church. So you can obtain sponsorship individually or as a team and ride round the Calne Deanery. The total distance round the 18 Churches is 56 miles so you can either see how far you can get or see how many you can visit in 30 minutes.

THE BOOK CAFE will be open at the same time. Refreshments available. Bring your paperback books to swap or purchase others.

WI

The August WI meeting was an evening walk from the Broad Town village hall to the Crown pub at Broad Hinton and was well attended. It was a beautiful, sunny evening as we set off and the walk showed the local views off at their best taking in Little Town farmhouse, the white horse, woods, cornfields and a rainbow. We got slightly damp as we crossed the Broad Hinton cricket ground but the pub log fire soon dried us off. More members joined us at the pub, where a sociable evening was enjoyed by everyone.

The next WI meeting will be back in the Village hall on 15th Sept when we will have the opportunity to learn about the important topic of Diet and better bones; 7-30pm start - visitors most welcome. Don't forget to come and visit us at the Tea Table at the Broad Town Big Gig 4th September for hot drinks, homemade cakes and biscuits.

"A SOLDIERS LIFE IN THE TRENCHES" an illustrated talk - speaker Steve Williams WEDNESDAY 20TH OCTOBER 7.30PM IN THE VILLAGE HALL

Come and experience the life of an ordinary soldier in the trenches during World War 1. We are building a replica trench in the Village Hall (rats and all !!) and our speaker will be in uniform. Entry £3 (children free) to include WI refreshments. We will have poppies, poppy pins and a collecting box for the Royal British Legion. We hope everyone will support the Poppy Appeal. So that we know how many cakes to bake (!) – if you would like to come or would like more information could you ring 731526 or email mrs2mac@sky.com

BENEFICE OUTING

Jackie and Trish are again organising a benefice outing. This year it will be on October 23rd. Letters and forms will be available from your churches from Mid July or from Adele at Hilmarton Post Office or phone 01249 760638 or 01249 760255.

Please could all money and forms be with the organisers by September 13th. The reason for the early date is a holiday.

BROAD TOWN SOCIAL CLUB

The social club Halloween party will be held on 29th October at the Village hall from 8pm Entry £1 per head. Entertainment by parmes disco.

Prizes for (under 16's only) fancy dress and best pumpkin. Lantern parade, meeting at Broad Town School at 7:30pm.

The social club is open on Friday's from 8pm. Why not come along and try our NEW pool table and enjoy cheap bar prices, We are also open on a Sunday evening for bingo

which starts at 8pm, doors open 7:30pm. Membership is only £2 for the year (Jan to Dec).

I would like to thank everyone that completed the Broad Town Special Interest Group Social Club Survey. The feed back is very important to us, helping the committee to sit down and discuss what is needed for the club to move forward.

A lot of the comments made were to do with the decor of the bar. We are in the process of doing this and are gathering quotes. We hope to have refurbished the bar in time for Christmas and hope to include a music system. Fingers crossed!

I would like to a make you aware that the committee does not have any say in regards to the car park, outside seating, the decor, furniture and the layout of the Village Hall. If you have any comments regarding these then please contact the Village Hall committee.

We have arranged several different events at the social club ranging from quizzes to skittle nights that have been very successful. We have also had in the past poorly attended events such as Discos & Race nights which the club has lost money.

In recent months we have purchased a new pool table and also hope to add a dart board soon. There has been a suggestion whether we could have Sky Sports, and hold film nights. This would not be possible as a licensed bar, we simply do not have the income to lay out such a cost at this time.

Moving the Bingo on a Sunday night to a Friday night would not be feasible due to it clashing with the Bingo held in Bassett. The social club would lose more customers to Bassett than we would gain.

Children running around is a thing of the past, it seems that nowadays the parents who do bring their children to the club are being responsible for them.

We would not like to hold events that may conflict with other venues such as Poetry reading which is held at the Goddards Arms in Clyffe Pypard. We feel that there would not be enough interest to support similar events in our small community.

The more the social club is supported with new members joining the committee, more ideas will be brought forward and the club will evolve into a club that any village would be proud of. This can only happen with the support of our community.

If anyone has a few hours to spare, please feel welcome to come and join us for a cheap drink and a good laugh on a Friday night or try your luck to win some money on a Sunday night at Bingo.

If anyone would like to discuss or comment please contact me on jbikerchick(@talk21.com

Thank you. Jody Langford, Chair Person, Broad Town Social Club

BROAD TOWN NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH

Thank you to those individuals who have volunteered their names to act as Street Coordinators for the proposed Broad Town Neighbourhood Watch. I have asked the Neighbourhood Policing Team to identify a date when they can deliver an introductory brief and I will let you know the details as soon as they are confirmed.

Despite the positive response, the following areas within Broad Town still require street coordinators if the scheme is to be comprehensive:

Broad Town South

Thornhill

Horns Lane

Chapel Lane

Anyone able to volunteer their time is asked to provide their name, e-mail address, phone number and street by phone or e-mail to

Andrew Law at 01793 731472, andrewlaw456@tiscali.co.uk

As a reminder, the role of the Street Coordinator is to cascade information provided by the Scheme Coordinator to Neighbourhood Watch participants within their street. This would include the quarterly Wootton Bassett Rural Neighbourhood Policing Newsletter and any other police provided information which is specific to Broad Town. Ideally this passage of information should be by e-mail and so the demands on time should be limited to no more than an hour per month.

BROAD TOWN PARISH COUNCIL

"An article in the Western Daily Press has highlighted a problem in the West Country with dogs roaming free on farmland. In substance, farmers have lost around £7.5 million due to worm infestation of lambs, brought onto the land by dogs who have been allowed to run free, not kept under control on footpaths, and their mess not cleared up. We regularly have sheep in our fields; please be considerate".

NB. I have been told that I only put moans in the 'News' - unfortunately I only get moans!

DIOCESAN MUSIC IN WORSHIP DAY

On Saturday 13 November 2010 the Diocesan Music in Worship Day will take place at the Dorford Centre, Dorford Baptist Church, Bridport Road, Dorchester, Dorset. The day will start with Opening Worship and will be followed by a keynote address from David Ogden. David is well known as a conductor and composer and is much in demand as a conductor and director of choral and church music workshops, courses and festivals in the UK and abroad. His unique mix of highly skilled music-making, inspirational teaching and leadership and sense of humour makes him an extremely popular choice for workshops of all kinds. He is Director of Music at Westbury-on-Trym parish church in Bristol and is also a Special Advisor for the Royal School of Church Music.

Following this there will an opportunity to attend a workshop in the morning and afternoon. The workshop leaders will include: Trevor Jarvis, who will specialise in Choral direction and plainchant; Paul Taylor, the Archdeacon of Sherborne, who will offer workshops on Music for Evensong and in the Eucharist; Robert Fielding who will offer organist workshops for beginners and non-beginners. Chris Moorsom and Steve Ball will lead workshops for Worship Groups, Glyn Bush and Ralph Cree provide sessions on rhythm and drumming and David Bruce-Payne will offer a chance to have a go at Music Composition. The day finishes with all the groups coming together to make a joyful noise in the plenary worship session.

Everyone is welcome to attend and booking forms and further details of workshops can be obtained from

Jill Minchin at 'Music in Worship',8, Alexandra Road, Dorchester, Dorset DTI 2LZ, email: salmusicft-hotmail.co.uk or telephone (01305 263757).

WILTSHIRE AIR AMBULANCE APPEAL

Yet again it has been a busy year for the Air ambulance with 534 missions taking place. Thankfully the target of £500,000 was raised. Unfortunately we still need to raise the same amount again this year and are grateful to all who give continued support to the Air Ambulance.

ROTARY'S SOUTH AFRICAN PRE-SCHOOL PROJECT

Since our successful Coffee Morning in June we have been asked about the Wootton Bassett & District Rotary Club's Pre-School project in South Africa.

The Club supports two pre-schools in townships near to Port Elizabeth.

One school operates in a purpose made building and the second within three old shipping containers,

The first of these Schools was in dire financial straits as it had accumulated an electricity account deficit of more then £3,500 but we were able to negotiate with the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Authority for relief of most of the account and to have a pre-payment meter fitted. We have supplied cooking and amenity equipment, educational aids and toys, security gates and generally improved its amenities. With this help it is now a happy well run pre-school.

In the other container Pre-school, run by a well intentioned "Mamma" we have provided similar equipment (most importantly mattresses and cooking equipment) and paved a bare earth play area as well as funding a teaching assistant.

The general standard in both Schools is now so greatly improved that they jointly attract over 200 children for whom we subscribe monthly to a feeding programme so that these children have at least one hot meal a day.

Many parents/guardians are unable to pay even the modest weekly fee for the children to attend Pre-school so it is important that we continue to support the feeding programme — hungry tummies never concentrate in class.

We need therefore to raise funds to sustain this nutritional endeavour so we will hold events periodically at 51 Broad Town and would much appreciate villagers support.

We know that, apart from a very modest admin fee by a small South African Charitable Trust, all our giving goes directly to the two Schools

If anyone would like any more information on this project please ring Janice & Keith Griffin on 01793 731424 when we would be only too happy to help.
