REVEREND ALISON WAY
Christmas is coming
This month’s picture is of this year’s Christmas stamps with our genuine King James bible, which was used in Royal Mail’s launch. As I write, I am conscious that Christmas related events are beginning to happen. I hope it will be possible for everyone to join us for a Christmas event or even better, some worship at this special time of year, when we mark the coming of Jesus Christ to earth and celebrate the hope and peace of ‘God with us’. There is much to choose from – if you have children may I particularly commend to you the following:-
- Our Christingle service at 4pm on Sunday 4th December at St Giles Tockenham followed by tea in the village hall. This is preceded by a children’s workshop exploring Christmas at 2:45pm that day for key stage 1 and 2 children in Tockenham village hall. Let me know if you wish your child to attend this work shop so we have enough resources for all!
- Our Christmas Eve family service on Saturday 24th December at St Lawrence’s Hilmarton at 5pm. For this please come armed with a nativity headdress
- Our Christmas day family communions on Sunday 25th December at St Peter’s Clyffe Pypard at 9:15am and at St Giles, Tockenham at 11am. For this please come with an opened present!
More for the grownups can I recommend this year’s round of traditional Carol Services, one in each Church of the benefice This 400th anniversary year we will be using the King James Version of the Bible for the readings, which so many people particularly appreciate for the beauty of the language and the sense of God within the powerful texts of Christmas. Also our midnight mass this year is in Christ Church Broad Town at 11pm on Saturday 24th December.
May I wish you and yours a happy and holy Christmas. With love in Christ, Alison Way, Rector of the benefice of Woodhill.
Happy New Year!
2012 will bring many things we expect like the Olympics and the celebrations for our Queen’s diamond jubilee, but I also suspect 2012 will bring lots of things we are not expecting too! Through the expected and unexpected events of life, God’s presence through his spirit that dwells within us, will guard us and guide us as we journey ever onward.
Perhaps the expected or unexpected, and the love of God in your life may be prompting you to be interested in exploring getting confirmed in 2012, if that is the case do please get in touch by the end of January. Confirmation marks the point in the Christian journey at which young people and adults take on their faith commitment for themselves and become full members of the Church. The deanery confirmation service for 2012 is planned for the evening of June 7th 2012, and will be hosted by Christ Church Derry Hill. I would also be happy to include anyone who wishes to refresh their understanding of the basics of the Christian faith, and are already confirmed in this preparation. So if that is you, do please get in touch too.
Another thing on the expected list for early 2012 is a celebration marking the creation of a special lectern in which to keep and display the genuine 400 year old King James version of the Bible, which was recently ‘re-discovered’ in St Lawrence Hilmarton. The Bishop of Sherborne will be joining us for some special worship in St Lawrence Hilmarton, at 3pm on Saturday 21st January – followed by refreshments. Please do come and join us for this and marvel at the work of local artist and craftsman Alan Tilbury and the generosity of the benefactors who have made the design and building of this lectern a reality.
With love in Christ, Alison Way

BROAD TOWN WI
Lynda Warren was the Broad Town WI speaker last month with her talk entitled ‘a funny way to make a living’ – a fascinating potted history of her career making television programs and films. Lynda, along with her husband Malcolm, provided everything and anything to the production set. They both had started their careers in theatre with him providing props and electrics whilst Lynda was a make-up artist who also designed and created costumes. Transferring these skills to television and film, whatever a producer needed Lynda and Malcolm made it happen with no job too weird or difficult – and many were both! Using their networks from a local Welsh taxidermist to Mary Chipperfield, who provided a dog who could stop breathing on command, they ensured the strangest of requirements were met. Many of the creative solutions would probably be a Health and Safety nightmare today, but back then it was just what had to be done. It must have been a great life, with no two days the same and was indeed a ‘funny way to make a living’.
Broad Town WI meet on the 3rd Wednesday of every month. If you would like to find out more please give Jenny or Sandra a call on 739268 or 731523 respectively.
PARISH COUNCIL CLERKS CLIPPINGS
1. The Big Gig Committee has offered considerable financial support to the Parish Council’s plan to improve road safety in the Village. The Council is very grateful for this offer, which, with other funding, should do a great deal to achieve the aim.
2. The recent bye-election result for the Parish Council was
Stuart Hinson 94 votes Elected.
Matthew Nailon 40 votes
3. In 2012 there is going to be a survey of speed limits on C and unclassified roads in Wiltshire, but only a few will be covered. The Council need to know of any accidents/incidents on the road through the Village in the past two years, with dates if possible. Clr Ray Bourton, 731439 will co-ordinate.
4. Are you computer literate, used to slave wages, like to take the blame for everything that goes wrong, and very grumpy, you could be the new Clerk to the Parish Council. The present one has aged beyond his years and would like to retire before he dies. Please apply soon. 731154
PARISH COUNCIL BY-ELECTION
As one of the two candidates in last month’s Parish Council by-election, I would like to pass on my sincere thanks to everybody who turned out to vote on November 17th.
It was essential to have a good turnout, for the sake of the democratic mandate given by the election and at an above average 26%, we certainly achieved that! I can only promise to do my best for the whole Parish – Broad Town, Bincknoll, Cotmarsh, Thornhill at all times. Please contact me on 731858 or at broadtown@stuarthinson.co.uk if you have any questions, Thank you. Stuart Hinson.
BROAD TOWN PRE SCHOOL
Pre school is really starting to get into the Christmas spirit with regular rehearsals for our nativity play which will take place during the Christmas Bazaar. The children are practicing lots of Christmas carols and I think there are even a few lines for some!!! Our Christmas Bazaar takes place on the Thursday the 8th December at Broad Hinton Village Hall from 9:00am until 11:30am. There will be a number of stalls including Aloe Vera Products, Primrose Hill, and Virgin Vie. We also have all the usual, such as the cake stall, raffle with some great prizes, and refreshments. Everyone is welcome, so please come along and support our pre school, enjoy the children's nativity and maybe do a little Christmas shopping. Donations to pre school on the door then a free cup of tea or coffee.
BROAD TOWN COMMUNITY LED PLANNING GROUP - VOLUNTEERS REQUIRED.
As many of you will be aware, the Government's Localism Bill will have a profound effect on proposed development in all communities. Royal Wootton Bassett and Cricklade Area has been chosen to pilot the production of a Neighbourhood Plan, with a Neighbourhood Planning Forum set up to take that work forward.
Peter Doyle, the Chairman of Royal Wootton Bassett and Cricklade Area Board and Community First, support and welcome the creation of a Community Led Planning Group to help influence the development of the Neighbourhood Plan for the community area. As Ex-Chair of the Parish Plan Steering Group, I agreed to facilitate the creation of the group and am requesting volunteers to take the group forward; once created I will withdraw as it is important this group is, and is seen to be, entirely independent and representing the views of the parish. The group will:
- Be separate from the Parish Council
- Create their Constitution
- Elect officers
- Agree how often it will meet – it could be on an ‘as and when needed’ basis
- Elect their representative on the Neighbourhood Planning Forum
It is not intended that membership of this group would be a huge commitment, but it will be an important group whose purpose will be to ensure the views of the people of the parish are represented on the Forum by a nominated and accountable representative. It is important for Broad Town to be aware that saying ‘No’ to development is a risk as it could leave the community vulnerable to unchallenged development. This group will therefore be a vital link between the views of the residents of Broad Town and the work being carried out on the Neighbourhood Planning Forum. So, I would encourage anyone interested in joining this group, with the aim of taking forward the views of the parish, to please contact me by 9th December.
LINK 6 GOOD NEIGHBOUR SCHEME SGM
A Special General Meeting of the Link 6 Scheme will be held on January 9th at 14.00 in Tockenham Village Hall.
The purpose of this meeting is to agree changes to the constitution to extend the areas covered by Link 6 to incorporate Royal Wootton Bassett.
This meeting is open to any interested party. For details / apologies, please contact the Link 6 Secretary, Kate, on 01793 855170
BROAD TOWN NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH
The Broad Town Neighbourhood Watch has now been running for one year after its re-launch last November. Behind it lies a simple idea, and a central value shared by millions of people around the country, that of getting together with your neighbours to take action can cut local crime. Everyone knows that the police are there to fight crime, but they need your help to do an effective job. Neighbourhood Watch is all about an active partnership with the police. Neighbourhood Watch schemes can:
· Cut crime and reduce the opportunity for crime.
· Help to reassure those who live in fear of crime.
· Encourage neighbourliness and closer communities.
· Inform the police and neighbours about suspicious behaviours and incidents in their neighbourhood.
In Broad Town the Neighbourhood Watch is organized by 7 coordinators spread across the Parish. Anyone who wants more information or who wishes to become a member should forward their details to Andrew Law (andrewlaw456@tiscali.co.uk, 01793 731472) and he will put them in touch with their local coordinator.
VILLAGE HALL
Broad Town has a very attractive Village Hall, it is light and airy and well heated with extra heating if required. It can seat up to 120 people on comfortable chairs along with many lightweight trestle tables if required. The kitchen is well equipped with cooker, microwave and fridge, plus cutlery and kettles along with cups and saucers. In fact an ideal place to hold not only a children’s party, but for the older person a Bar can be arranged just to help make your party go with a swing. For more information contact Nigel Crocker 01793 731281.
BROAD TOWN BIG GIG
Firstly, following on from the great success of the Big Gig 2011, your committee has made donations to Help for Heroes and village organisations to the tune of £3,248 as follows:
Help for Heroes £1,000
Broad Town Pre-school £198
White Horse Society £500
BT Newsletter £100
Parish Council £1,200
Church £250
Secondly, thanks to everyone who attended the AGM – a new committee has been formed comprising: Keith Newman (Chair), Richard Wylie (Vice Chair), Andrew Law (Secretary), James Harvey-Samuel (Treasurer) and committee members Matt Nailon, Ed Newman, Matt Parry, Matt Rogers and Graham Wallis. And without any messing about, we immediately set the date for the Big Gig 2012 as Saturday the 1st September. Can we make it any better? We are already working on it…..
And lastly, due to relocation, the Big Gig says goodbye to Marcus Galea and Chris King. Chris was one of the founders of the Big Gig back in 2006 and has been a committee member every year except one, whilst Marcus joined us in 2008 and has twice led the team as Chair. Both will be sorely missed, but perhaps we will see the Big Gig franchise in other parts of the country, or the Big Gig on tour!
Watch this space in the New Year for more exciting news. Merry Christmas!

GOODBYE WASPS AND ANTS, HELLO CLUSTER FLIES, LADYBIRDS RATS AND MICE.
Whilst all of our seasons present insect, rodent and mammal pests, this time of the year, households and businesses suffer with infestations of rats, mice, cluster flies and ladybirds.
I’m sure we all understand that rats and mice can spread many life threatening diseases. However, did you know they both need to keep gnawing, as their teeth never stop growing? This leaves us at risk to fire, flood and communication breakdown, as these rodents munch their way through cables and pipes. Did you know that rats can even eat their way into our houses through brick walls?!
The UK is experiencing attack from Asian Harlequin Ladybirds. They defecate on soft furnishings and the gooey yellow stuff that seeps out of their joints, smells foul, stains and rots wallpaper, curtains, sofas and other soft furnishings. If you find a few on your windowsills, don’t assume it will stop there – they let off pheromones that attract others in their thousands!
Whilst cluster flies are not known to carry specific disease, they can be a nuisance. Today, in one house, I must have vacuumed up ten thousand of them from windowsills. Once in roof cavities and lofts they can cause fire risk, as their dehydrated corpses fry on the back of halogen lights and clog up ceiling roses.
As for moles, they continue to keep us busy all tear around!
Should you need to talk to us, please find our contact details attached to this newsletter. Alternatively go to www.clearzonepc.co.uk. And don’t forget, we prefer to serve the local community so that we can provide a service that is faster and cheaper than other pest controllers.
