REVEREND ALISON WAY
I saw my first combine harvester of this year in action whilst walking near Barbury Castle last week, and it made my mind turn to harvest. For those who work locally, I hope the harvest in all its different forms and not just at this time of year goes well, and as the hymn would have it, ‘that all is safely gathered in’.
In preparation for our celebrations of harvest in the benefice this year – we are holding a special children’s work shop on Saturday 24th September from 10am to 11:30am in the Church Hall in Hilmarton. This is open to primary school aged children, and please do get in touch with me to book your children their places (so we have enough resources for everybody). Those who came to our work shop back in April had a super morning! We will be particularly thinking about how much we need to be thankful in life. I hope to share the fruits of the children’s efforts at the work shop as part of each Church’s harvest festival service, which are as follows:

CHURCHYARD WORKING PARTY

CHILDREN’S WORKSHOP
The next children’s workshop will be on Saturday 24th September in Hilmarton Church hall. This is open to all primary school children for a day of craft, stories and, above all, fun.
BROAD TOWN PARISH PLAN
Every household in the Parish should now have a copy of the Broad Town Parish Plan which was distributed with July's issue of the Broad Town Newsletter. Additional A5 copies of the Plan are available from Roy Davey, Clerk to the Parish Council. There is also an A4 version in the Village Hall, the Church, Broad Town Primary School, and Wootton Bassett Library. You can also see the Plan on the Parish website www.broad-town.co.uk.
The Steering Group Committee are now disbanding, and the Plan has been adopted by Broad Town Parish Council. However, before we finally go, we would like to thank you again for your co-operation in completing the Broad Town Parish Plan Questionnaire, and to thank the Newsletter volunteers for distributing the Plan through your letterboxes.
GUIDED WALK ROUND AVEBURY HENGE AND CHURCH BY ARCHAEOLOGIST BOB CLARKE
On August 13th we will meet in the National Trust main car park for 1pm and the walk will take about two and half hours. The terrain is flat and the distance a leisurely 2 miles.
For hardy souls Bob is prepared to extend the walk to West Kennet long barrow.
Cost £5 per Adult – Children free. Light refreshments available after the walk. We would like a guide on numbers so names please to Bob Clarke or any member of the PCC.
PARISH COUNCIL
CLERKS CLIPPINGS
1. Now that the Parish Plan Steering Group has published its report, we must move on. The Parish Council will be discussing the way forward at the next meeting. If you are interested in a particular subject I am sure a place will be found for you on a working group. One of the projects is speeding /road safety in the Village. An estimate of the cost of the recommended road works has been obtained, and the Council will be looking for funding. We have already ring fenced the sum of £200 received from the Parish Plan Steering Group
2. A new notice board has been ordered for Thornhill to replace the present one, which is, like me, suffering the ravages of old age.
3. The Clerk has been logging complaints about blocked footpaths. The Council will soon be in a position to contact the relevant landowners where a problem exists.
4. Now that our feathered friends have finished nesting, the time has come, once again, for hedge trimming and clearing of verges etc.

BROAD TOWN WI
The speaker at the Broad Town WI last month was none other than the rootin’-tootin’ Dad of one of our members: Sheriff Woody. No not really, Reg Dawson was our guest speaker. Dressed in authentic Cowboy gear Reg explained the multitude of uses for everything he was wearing. The hat was a sun visor, an ear warmer, a water carrier (yuk, sweaty water!) and a method for catching attention without scaring the cattle. The boots, which have become such a fashion statement in recent years, are also designed with the life and work of the Cowboy in mind; long in case of snake bites, heels slanted to enable the cowboy to brace himself against a cow pulling on the end of a rope and a groove on the heel for the spurs to sit on without slipping down. Everything has a place and a purpose. Contrary to popular belief the cowboy was not a gun slinging hot shot; in fact they were quite poor shots because rounds were expensive (two cost a day’s pay) so they rarely used their guns for shooting – the handle however made a great hammer! Reg’s collection of cowboy memorabilia included saddles, ropes, more hats and other items of clothing, a bed roll and a selection of vicious looking spurs. As for wearing jeans that is a popular myth – a Cowboy would never wear denim!

Don’t forget to come and see us at the Big Gig where there will be the usual wonderful selection of cakes baked by our WI domestic goddesses! RIDE AND STRIDE 2011
Takes place on Saturday 10th September. Last year £406 was shared equally between the Historic Churches Trust and our own church in Broad Town and we are grateful to all those who took part. If you would like to walk or cycle around our beautiful countryside, enjoy refreshments at many of the churches and raise some money for our church while you do so, please contact Carolyn Crocker on 01793 852754.
COFFEE MORNINGS
The next one will be on September 10th so that the Church will be open for the morning of the Wiltshire Church’s Cycle Ride. There will be refreshments and cakes for sale.
The Christmas coffee morning will be on November 26th with a raffle, sales table, cards and refreshments etc.

SAFARI SUPPER
We are planning to run a Safari Supper in the Village on Saturday 15th October. We do have 10 hosts but ideally would like another one. If anyone is interested in participating please contact Sara on 731114. We shall start altogether in Cotmarsh, work up through the Village dividing up between venues and finishing all together again in Pye Lane. Cost £17.50 per head for a 3 course meal – wine included. VILLAGE HALL
Broad Town has a very attractive Village Hall, it is light and airy and well heated with extra heating if required. It can seat up to 120 people on comfortable chairs along with many lightweight trestle tables if required. The kitchen is well equipped with cooker, microwave and fridge, plus cutlery and kettles along with cups and saucers. In fact an ideal place to hold not only a children’s party, but for the older person a Bar can be arranged just to help make your party go with a swing. BIG GIG – 3rd September 2011
With a little over a month to go, we are now in the publicising and ticket selling phase of the plan. We will be distributing 1,000 advance copies of the Programme to local pubs and clubs, undertaking leaflet drops and poster campaigns plus erecting 7 banners on the highways of North Wilts. But you can help us and yourselves too – get your tickets before we sell out and spread the word! There’s a poster you can download on the website – print it off, stick it in your window, car, or up at work and help raise funds for Help for Heroes – remember at least 25% of the profits will be donated. If you have friends and relatives travelling from afar and can’t put them up, there is limited camping this year which must be pre-booked for a small donation (please tel. 731108).
The line-up has, as always, moved a little in the last few weeks, with Theo Altieri and The Urgent Frogs stepping in for a couple of casualties to artistic differences; no loss as to the quality of the bill there. Plus don’t forget we have drum workshops, guitar workshops, trampolines, boat swings, bouncy castle plus the Pre-School will be providing face Painting and / or fake tattoos. Food-wise there will not only be the obligatory BBQ, but also a selection of Indian Curries from award winning Josh Krori who featured on Gordon Ramsey’s ‘F Word’, plus a stall providing Sweet and Savoury Crepes. As always, adding glamour to the culinary delights, we have those stalwarts the WI providing Tea, Speciality Coffee, Hot Chocolate and Fantastic Cakes, plus the usual well run Bar provided by the Social Club, serving Real Ales, Real Ciders and a great selection of other alcoholic and soft drinks. Top music and top gastronomy; what more can you ask for?
If you want to come en-mass, we have a group discount promotion: buy 6 adult tickets and you will receive the 7th free! So round up your family and friends and benefit from your bulk buy – this promotion may be withdrawn at any time, so get your tickets early! One final note: Tents! We will be holding a marquee erection master class on Friday, 5th August in the village hall, 8pm onwards, where training will be given on the elusive and previously little known ‘dolly-knot’ – we need more people with these skills! Beer available! HARVEST
This year harvest Songs of Praise will be on Sunday October 16th at 6.0pm. Beforehand we will have the café open from 5.00pm for harvest tea of sandwiches, cakes and other goodies. Come and join in with all the fun and with the singing of traditional harvest hymns.
FLOWER FESTIVAL JULY 14TH AND 15TH 2012
Yes, we know it is a whole year away but we thought we would let you know now.
That weekend next year is when the Church will be having a flower festival and we invite you to make your clever scarecrows. The theme for both will be “BOOKS”. That means you can represent any book, adult or children’s that you wish to. You now have plenty of thinking time.

THE GUILD OF WILTSHIRE ARTISTS
Run workshops at the Village Hall on every third Saturday of the month from 10am to 4pm. All are welcome including painters who are beginners.
Tea and Coffee provided but do bring a packed lunch.
