REVEREND ALISON WAY
Lent begins this year on 9th March and we will be marking this with a benefice communion for Ash Wednesday at St Lawrence Hilmarton at 7:30pm. Our focus this Lent will be on spending time together praying, and discerning God’s will for us as individuals, communities and the benefice as a whole.
In three of the weeks in Lent at different times of the day, we will be holding simple week day prayer services, one in each parish. In March there is a week of ‘Morning Prayers’ and a week of ‘Prayers in the middle of the day’, and in April a week of ‘Night Prayers’ (more details next month!). This initiative will allow us to spend more time in prayer together as we dwell on understanding God’s will for us. All will be most welcome to come to any of these as you can, and not just the ones in our own parish (if you need help with the location of the venues for these, give me a ring or send me an email for directions).
During Lent we will also be studying the book ‘‘An Altar in the world – finding the sacred beneath our feet’ by Barbara Brown Taylor (Canterbury Press, 2009, Reference 978 1 85311 990 3). This will be informing the preaching and be the basis of our Lent and Easter seasons discussions. In March, the first discussion will take place here at the Rectory at 12 noon on Wednesday 23rd March (please bring a packed lunch to munch). Though you will get a lot from being part of our worship and part of the discussion without reading the book, do consider getting hold of one. Again, the reading plan (for which chapter of the book to read when) is available in all the churches or from me directly.
Whatever you plan to do this Lent, it is my hope and my prayer, it helps you to come closer to the God who loves us all so much.
With love in Christ, Alison Way, Rector, Benefice of Woodhill, The Rectory, Wood Street, Clyffe Pypard, Wilts, SN4 7PY alisonway@tiscali.co.uk, 01793 739044

“GOODBYE.”
Sadly we had to say “Goodbye” to four people over the winter.
Sam Clewley had attended Broad Town School and moved on to “The Comp”. She was a volunteer at the Oxfam Charity Shop. Sam had been a Brownie in Bassett and moved all through the sections to become a Guider in the Guide section.
George Bussell had been married for 57yrs and was a civil engineer. He leaves a wife and two daughters.
Pete Thomson was a Scot who served a carpentry apprenticeship. He then served 19years in the RAF as a Chef. When he left he became a long distance lorry driver till his retirement. He was always interested in cooking as well as cycling.
Mr Fox had lived in the village for 50yrs and is survived by a wife and three children. He had been a toolmaker with Pressed Steel for about 24yrs.
“THANK YOU.”
Mrs Bussell would like us to pass on the families’ thanks to all who sent cards. They were greatly appreciated.
Joan Thomson and family would like to thank everyone who sent cards, donations and flowers in memory of Peter. Also much appreciated was the support received at this sad time.
PANCAKES, PANCAKES, PANCAKES!
On Sat. March 5th we will be cooking pancakes at Christ Church, Broad Town as part of our coffee morning. There will also be cakes for sale.
Do come and join in the fun. The Café in the Church will be open from 10.00am till 12noon.
GRAVE YARD
The church would like to express its thanks to Mr Frank Lovegrove and Kevin for the splendid work they have done over the years in keeping the Church yard grass cut. Unfortunately Kevin now feels unable to continue.
If anyone out there feels that they could take on the job of mowing the grass please could they contact Clive on 731511.
FRIENDS OF CHRISTCHURCH
Responding to requests and to make giving easier, “Friends” can now pay by Standing Order (Form attached). Those “Friends” who give by cheque or cash who still wish to do so can. So can any new “Friends”. Applications should be returned to the address on the back of the form.
Thank you to all who have supported us and to those in the future who will?
BROAD TOWN WI
WI March Meeting - Open evening. The 16th March W I meeting is an open evening where all are very welcome to attend - not just the ladies! Please come along and listen to Alan Fletcher giving a talk on Guide Dogs for the Blind - he will be bringing his own Guide Dog. A donation from the profits will be given to Swindon Guide Dogs.
Please confirm your attendance by 7th March by telephoning Jayne on 731565 or Kate on 731536 (so we know how many cakes to bake). Adult visitors £3 to include refreshments. Children free.
WI February Meeting. The Broad Town WI were treated to a passionate talk by Rodney Veazey about Whales and Dolphin Conservation. The work of the WDCS (Whales and Dolphin Conservation Society) is internationally renowned and respected - this despite having their headquarters miles from the sea in Chippenham! Rodney clearly loves his subject and his presentation was engaging whilst at the same time managing to be educational and informative. Did you know that a Sperm Whale, which is up to 66ft long and 65tons, can dive to depths of 2000m on one breath which it can hold for an hour? Or that Orcas only live for about four years in captivity, but up to 35 years in the wild? There are many species of Whales, Dolphins and Porpoises which live around or visit the British Isles, so you don't have to go to exotic places or zoos to see them. Rodney gave us a number of WDCS Newsletters, the surplus has been left in the Village Hall so please help yourself to find out more about these beautiful creatures and the work of the charity.
Broad Town WI meets every 3rd Wednesday in the month. Visitors and new members are always warmly welcomed, so please feel free to contact Jenny (President) tel: 739268 or Jenni (Secretary) tel: 731716.
BROAD TOWN SOCIAL CLUB
We are a friendly bunch that meets on Friday nights from 8pm, we have a pool table, football table and now a new darts board.
We also run a bingo on Sundays, doors open 7pm. Membership is now due £2.00 for the year.
We will be holding some events through the year, In April we will be having a pool night, in May we will be holding a skittles night and In June we will be holding a quiz night (dates and more events to be announced).
Pub games night-8pm Friday 18th March the aim is to give people an excuse to come and have fun at the village hall. There will be five games available: darts, pool, table tennis, table football and giant Jenga. All ages welcome and even if you do not fancy playing any of these games it will be a good social night. There will be a small entrance fee for participants of 50p. Please note that all children must be accompanied by an Adult.
BROAD TOWN C OF E PRIMARY SCHOOL
Football Tournament
Well done to the boys who played in the football Tournament at Stanley Park, Chippenham. They beat off all the opposition to win the small schools football tournament and they will be going through to represent Wiltshire in the next stage of the competition. Many thanks to Mrs Airey and Mr Coward for giving up their time to take the children to the tournament and to Mrs Brown for volunteering to help.
Cluster Maths Games Competition
Well done to everyone who took part. Everyone had an enjoyable time and met lots of new people. Thank you to Mrs Dow and Mrs Westbury for providing transport as well as helping out at the competition.
Rotary Youth Speaks Competition
Lizzy, Josh and Isabelle from Class 3 took part in the Youth Speaks Competition against other schools in our area. Each team comprised of 3 pupils from local schools who gave short talks on subjects of their choice and they were judged on their grammar, use of vocabulary, expression and clarity of ideas. They all did really well and we are very proud of them.

BIG GIG - 3rd September 2011
It seems our little old village event has become quite popular in music circles; we have over thirty (yes, 30!) bands or artists keen to appear at the Big Gig on the 3rd September, including a couple of very exciting bookings, which we shall reveal in due course! Following on from the success of Stayed As Quo last year, we intend to seek out another top-notch tribute band and have a number of irons in the fire. Keep an eye out for details of Little Gigs soon too. If you can’t wait for the newsletter, we will be making announcements over the next few weeks on Facebook.
Whilst bands are in plentiful supply, we do not have many sponsors, so to all you budding Alan Sugars out there, how about sponsoring the Big Gig 2011. You can contribute as little or as much as you like. You can sponsor a band, a stage, the tickets, the wristbands or the whole event. You can advertise in the programme. We can publicise your contribution, or if you want to be an anonymous donor, then we can manage that as well – don’t forget sponsorship is a legitimate business expense and tax deductable. If you can help, please get in touch by emailing secretary@broadtownshow.co.uk or contacting any of the committee directly. www.broadtownshow.co.uk / www.facebook.com/BroadTownBigGig
CLEARZONE PEST CONTROL
Clearzone Pest Control are passionate about providing an added value service in the local community. Clearzone Pest Control is based in Broad Town, and local residents are already benefiting by the added value that can be obtained by a local company. This is being achieved by the business taking a fair and pragmatic view on the time and costs saved in travelling, when providing a local service. The business owner, Glen Morley, values rural community life and moved to the village a year ago with his children, who already attended Broad Town Primary School. Prior to that he lived in Tockenham, where he lived for 15 years. The business is able to help with the control of insects, rodents and mammals. Examples are: Wasps, Hornets, Bees, Ants, Fleas, Bugs, Rats, Mice, Moles, Squirrels and larger mammals where required. They can also assist with bird control. Their service covers the domestic and commercial market, including farms. Please see the attached A5 leaflet for contact details, should you wish to speak to Glen for advice or treatment.
THE GUILD OF WILTSHIRE ARTISTS
Run workshops at the Village Hall on every third Saturday of the month from 10am to 4pm. All are welcome including painters who are beginners.
Tea and Coffee provided but do bring a packed lunch.
Help will be given to those who request it.
Contact telephone numbers 731154, 731519.
