WEEDS

The other Sunday we were asked by the Vicar “If you were a weed what would you be?” One person suggested that they were a buttercup. I am sure that suited them as in their professional life and in voluntary work their influence must have gone far. And their cheerful face must have been a very welcome sight to all.

All of us could aspire to be buttercups – that bright cheerful flower can light up the dreariest of days. So we should be cheerful with all. The runners with new plants on the ends increase the spread of the buttercup – so with a laugh, a smile and a good turn we can spread the Love of God.

FAREWELL

Sadly we report another death in the village. Mr Graham Leppard passed away at the end of May.

He was clever with his hands – he built 3 houses in the village. He worked in electronics and enjoyed Shadows music.

He leaves a wife and 3 children. We send our condolences to the family.

LOST

Unfortunately one of the Church brass vases has gone “walkabout”. It is one of a pair and has a dedication. So the Church is very keen to get it back. If anyone knows of its whereabouts please could it end up in a carrier bag on the doorstep of No.10 Broadacres.

CHURCH EXTENSION

The Church in Broad Town was built 170 years ago. And much-loved as it is there is room for improvement as there would be for any building of a similar vintage. The hope is that we will be able to add a toilet facility and possibly a small kitchen, as this would make this beautiful building a little bit more person-friendly in the 21st century. Because it is Grade 2 listed (and equally because it is the right thing to do) anything that was added would be done in as sympathetic a way as possible to the current building. Nothing has been finalised yet but we have an idea of how it might look and some cost estimates that we plan to make available to anyone who may be interested. We'll also have some information on display at the next coffee morning. Inevitably, there will be questions, several probably not yet even thought of, and we don't currently have all the answers, but the aim is to modernise a little without having to compromise the character of this wonderful building. A small committee is being formed to look into what grants are available.

BROAD TOWN BIG GIG - 5 SEPTEMBER 2015.

Well it doesn’t get much better than this. The Big Gig Committee are pleased to announce that their headline act for the 2015 Big Gig is Hells Bell; reputed to be the best AC/DC tribute band in UK. You can see them on the internet at http://www.hellsbells.info and get an idea of how great they really are. There will be a full supporting line-up performing non-stop for 7 hours from 3.30pm to 10.30pm with 11 bands booked to appear. As usual the Committee has worked hard to offer an eclectic mix of music and there should be something to meet every taste. Look out for the full listing on the Big Gig website at http://www.broadtownshow.co.uk/ where information will be released in early July.

Tickets will be available at a price of £20 for adults and £10 for children from local outlets along with on-line purchase via Paypal. Further information will be available on the Big Gig website, again in early July. Don’t miss this fantastic event; be sure to block out the date 5th September in your diary and get tickets for you and your family before they sell out.

The next Big Gig Committee meeting will take place at 8.30pm, Friday 3rd July in the Village Hall.

BROAD TOWN WI

Last month our speaker was Norman Jeffrey who is the Gloucestershire County Organiser for the National Gardens Scheme. He told us the history of the scheme.

It started in 1927 as a fund raising idea to support the training of District Nurses (pre NHS). A fund had been set up in memory of Queen Alexandra who had died the year before by a lady called Elsie Wagg. She persuaded people to open their gardens to the public for a shilling a visit. In the first year it raised £8000! Since then it has raised £45,000,000. Since the creation of the NHS the money has been donated to charities like Marie Curie, Macmillan, Carer's Trust and Hospice UK.
Afterwards he showed us some wonderful photos of Gloucestershire gardens and also some of his own garden. Entry is now £4 to £5 and includes a cup of tea and cake. For any keen gardeners it is a lovely way to spend a summer weekend.

See www.ngs.org.uk for which gardens are open when.
This month we have two meetings. As it is the 100th anniversary of the WI and the 90th anniversary of the Broad Town WI we are having a garden party on the 8th July 6.30 - 8.30 to celebrate. This is for past and present members only. Any past members who haven't received an invitation please contact Kate below. Then on July 22nd we are having a short walk round Avebury followed by a meal at the Red Lion at Avebury. Walk 6.30, meal 7.30.
We are a friendly group and welcome new members. Our meetings are generally held on the third Wednesday of the month in the Village Hall. If you are interested in visiting us. Please contact Kate on 01793 731536 or look at our information on the Broad Town website.

PARISH CLERKS CLIPPINGS

1. Community Speedwatch is still in existence, but needs more volunteers, especially after the road safety improvements. Contact Matt Nailon.

2. Village Information Leaflet. It is my intention to re-issue an updated version in July. Any changes/additions to me soonest.

3. The Communications Protocol is now in draft form, and is open for consultation until 30th September. I hope to have it on the website soon.

4. At the meeting on 8th June, following a question from member of the public, the Chairman made it quite clear that the PC has never engaged with any developers about future building in the Village. This is the result of a false rumour being circulated.

clip_image002WHAT IS A SAFE PLACE?

clip_image004Imagine the scenario – you are out shopping and your keys and purse have been misplaced; you are visiting a friend in one of our lovely villages and you have missed the last bus or the car has broken down. PANIC! Where do you go for help? There is a national scheme called Safe Places which is gradually spreading and is now being set up in Wiltshire. You may have noticed this logo in shops, restaurants or other business windows? Wherever you see this sign, you can be assured of sensible, practical assistance in time of need. The establishments displaying this sign have volunteered to take part in this scheme and have agreed to be true “good neighbours”. They will offer a safe place for you to wait and support you to sort out the problem.

If you have any questions about this, or if I can help in any other way through the Good Neighbour role, give me a call on: 07557 110414.Ellen Blacker
