Walk for Rogation

On May 29th 2011 – we will be worshipping at each Church in the benefice and walking between them, to mark Rogation. Traditionally this is the time when people ‘beat the boundaries’ of their parishes. The poet George Herbert interpreted Rogation ‘as a means of asking for God’s blessing on the land, of preserving boundaries and of encouraging fellowship between neighbours with the reconciling of differences’. In more recent times, the scope of Rogation has been widened to include petition for the world of work, for accountable stewardship, and prayer for local communities, as well as prayers for God’s blessing on the land. The schedule for the day starts with Holy Communion at Christchurch Broad Town at 8am. We then walk to St Peter’s, Clyffe Pypard and have a Rogation Service there at approximately 10am, and on to St Giles’ Tockenham on foot for a Rogation Service at 12 noon. We will have our packed lunches and a breather there – before the final walk to Hilmarton. The day will culminate in a ‘Songs of Praise’ Service for Rogation at 5pm in St Lawrence, Hilmarton. Please do join us for as much of this (or as little of this) as you can. It should be possible for us to return people to their starting points/cars at the end of the day from Hilmarton. Even if you walk on one stage of our journey or travel in a car between you will be most welcome. If you are with us for the whole day you will be better off in walking boots, bright walking clothes and a packed lunch. I will also pray for favourable weather!

If you want further details of all of this, do get in touch.

THANK YOU

The Church would like to send a big “Thank You” to Mr Phillip Male for making our new notice board which has now been erected to replace the old one.

NEWSLETTER DELIVERIES

Is there anyone in the village who feels that they have an hour a month spare to delivery the newsletter? We are currently TWO people short for deliveries. One is Horns Lane and the other is part of Broad Town Road. If anyone feels that they can help please contact the editor.

GRAVE YARD

Thank you to the villagers who came forward to cut the grass.

Church members have now started work on tidying up some of the old graves. If anyone would like to “adopt” an old grave to keep it weed free we would greatly appreciate it.

OPEN GARDEN AND PLANT FAIR

This is taking place at Bushton Manor on Bank Holiday Monday, 2nd May from 11am – 4pm.

There will be lots of stalls, games for children and refreshments. Entrance £1 in aid of St Peter’s Church.

BENEFICE OUTING 2011

Jackie and Trish are organising a coach trip to Salisbury Cathedral flower festival on Friday 17th June. The cost will be £20 inclusive.

BROAD TOWN PRE SCHOOL

Our Forest School was the focus of much arboreal fun on March 31st.

Pre-School children in conjunction with the reception class at Broad Town School, donned their wellies and waterproofs and got digging with adventurous spirit. They planted a range of different trees donated by the Woodland Trust. Parents/Carers came along to help staff and children plant Cherry, Rowan, Silver Birch and Oak. The Children worked in small groups with an Adult and enjoyed the practical, hands on approach to learning. It was a successful day and the children received tree planting certificates to mark their achievements.

This term we have been learning about different careers and the people who help us. Visiting speakers have included a Nurse and a Lolly Pop lady. The TreeTop Theatre company also visited, and excited children with their performance on March the 22nd. A recent theme has been “Under the Sea” and jellyfish, sharks and starfish have been created by the children. Easter has also inspired a range of different fun-filled activities.

If you would like to find out more about Broad Town Pre-School, please contact 01793 731911 for more information, or to arrange a visit.

BIG GIG – 3rd September 2011

We are still working on the music and have added more bands to give you the biggest and best ever line up. To get you all in the party mood we have one of the premier local covers bands - Echo. Providing a foot stomping mix of roots and blues, Jim Blair will be performing on the bigger and better Marquee Stage (sponsored by Advanced Domestic Solutions), plus we are working on putting together a very special band to get you jiving in the jungle (well, field) with some full on Rockabilly! Hear the quality at www.broadtownbiggig.co.uk.

But, if you can’t wait until September to hear some quality music, keep the 10th of June free for the return of the Little Gig. With a variety of bands, plus some decent real ale, come along and help us decide who gets to play in the final few slots at the Big Gig in September. We’ll also be providing PA services to the School Fete on the 11th June and will have Big Gig tickets for sale with discounts for group purchases, so round up your family and friends and benefit from your bulk buy. Standard ticket prices are Adults over 16: £15, 12 – 16 year olds inclusive: £5 and under 12s: free.

We have had some limited success with Sponsorship, but this month it is your opportunity to sponsor a band! We will give your sponsorship acknowledgement in the programme and announcements on the night and we feel this is a fun way to promote your business, or for just a group of you to contribute to our worthy causes in a fun way. Don’t forget sponsorship is a legitimate business expense and tax deductable. If you can help, please get in touch by emailing secretary@broadtownshow.co.uk or contacting any of the committee directly. www.broadtownbiggig.co.uk / www.facebook.com/BroadTownBigGig
