REVEREND ALISON WAY

Remembrance

In line with the British Legion campaign, can I commend to you falling silent for 2 minutes at 11:00am on 11th November 2011 to reflect on the sacrifice of our brave service men and women from conflicts past and present.

Then on Remembrance Sunday (13th November), as has been our custom for the last couple of years, we will be holding an act of Remembrance at each war memorial in each of the parishes in the benefice of Woodhill. This will be incorporated within our early Communion Service at 7:50am at Christchurch, Broad Town. After this we will have Remembrance Services at Tockenham War Memorial at 9:00am, in St Peter’s Church, Clyffe Pypard at 10am and in St Lawrence Church, Hilmarton at 10:55am.

Also why not enrich your marking of Remembrance this year and come to a special evening of war poetry entitled ‘The pity of war’, which will be held in the upper room in Church House in Calne at 7:30pm on Monday 14th November 2011. This will be expertly led by the Reverend Andrew Studdert-Kennedy, who is a descendant of the first world war poet and priest Woodbine Willie (Geoffrey Anketell Studdert-Kennedy)

On another matter entirely, many many thanks for your generous support and sponsorship for my recent half-marathon. At the time of writing, this has raised a staggering and stupendous £1,179 for Christian Aid, with a further £100 of sponsor money promised to come. This does not include the gift aid, which will also add significantly to this total.

With love in Christ, Alison Way, Rector of the benefice of Woodhill.

PARISH COUNCIL CLERKS CLIPPINGS

1. The Area Board has approved the granting of the freehold of Redhills playing field to the Parish Council

2. The Area Board has also granted some funding to the Parish Council to help with our attempts to improve road safety in the Village. The PC is looking for funding from other sources to ease the cost to the Parish.

3. The Parish Council has donated £250 to the White Horse Preservation Group to help with the first class job they do in keeping our monument in good shape. Further, it was agreed to make a donation annually, the sum to be agreed as part of the financial planning for that year.

4. There will be a by-election on 17th November 2011 to elect a replacement councillor for the Parish Council. For more details watch the Notice Board.

5. A complaint. Please stop dumping your grass cuttings on road verges – it makes the Village look very untidy, particularly as the hedges and verges in the Village look so good this year.

6. And remember, the PC meets on the second Monday of each month, in the Village Hall at 7.30pm. Come and have a laugh.

WI

The Broad Town WI were treated to a riveting talk by Geoffrey Carr on the subject of ‘The Titanic and a Melksham family’. Everybody knows the story of one of the most famous passenger ships, but not everything you may think you know is true: it was not the worst disaster at sea (that happened in 1945 when the Goya sunk with approx 9000 lives lost), it was not in a race though the Captain was sailing her hard through a known iceberg field, she was not promoted as ‘practically unsinkable’ – that is just an attribute that has stuck over time, and the rivets were not made of poor quality materials. The Titanic was a very well built ship of her time and many of the construction techniques and standards are still in use today – a factor that was of little comfort to one of our members who was going on a cruise the next day and realised that a talk on the Titanic was probably not the best start to her holiday! Geoffrey’s talk started with the Melksham family – the Goodwins – who had left the UK to start a new life in New York, but never reached their destination. It ended with a poignant twist about one of the perished family members. The story of the Titanic is one that is bound to fascinate people for many years to come; Geoffrey’s talk was both sad and informative though as he conceded, it raises more questions than it answers.

Broad Town WI meets on the 3rd Wednesday of every month and warmly welcomes visitors and new members - we've had two new members just this month. If you want to know more then give us a call: Jenny (739268) or Sandra (731523)

Have you ever found yourself stuck because you need a little help and have nobody to ask?

A trip to the hairdresser or shopping seems all too difficult to do on your own?

You would love to have a chat or a walk with somebody and you feel you have asked too much of your neighbours?

A trip to the hospital would be just that little bit nicer if somebody could stay with you rather than simply dropping you off?

Well, you could always try LINK 6.

We are here to offer a Good Neighbour scheme for just those situations. Our volunteers give their time free, but we do invite a donation to help cover our running costs.

To find out more, please call our phone line 01249 892558 between the hours of 10.00 am and 4.00 pm
