REVEREND ALISON WAY
Remembering in hope.
In the book of Revelation at the end of the New Testament, there is a vision of heaven, which starts ‘Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more’ (Rev 21.1). The passage goes on to capture a sense of heaven for us, and the promise of eternal life with God when we die, as it says “See, the home of God is among mortals. He will dwell with them as their God; they will be his peoples, and God himself will be with them.” (Rev 21.3).
These words, sometimes used at funerals and beyond, provide deep comfort and reassurance of God’s love for us, particularly when we lose those special or close to us through their death. Life is obviously never quite the same, but we always carry the sense and the influence of that person forward in our hearts. In our onward journeying it can be helpful to find ways to honour, cherish and remember our lost loved ones now at peace and at rest deep in the heart of our loving heavenly Father God. This kind of remembering is just one aspect of our annual benefice-wide service for commemorating our departed, called “Remembering in Hope”. This year this service takes place at St Laurence’s Church in Hilmarton at 5:00pm on 30th October, allowing us an opportunity to give thanks to God for those who have been significant in our lives and have died. If you wish, there is also an opportunity at this service to light a candle in their memory.
In addition if you would like to have a loved one remembered by name at the ‘Remembering in hope’ service, please let me have their full name by getting in touch with me at the usual phone number or e-mail address, or by writing the name clearly in the “Remembering in Hope” book, which will be available at most Church worship during October.
With love in Christ, Alison Way, the ‘Running’ Rector, Benefice of Woodhill, The Rectory, Wood Street, Clyffe Pypard, Wilts, SN4 7PY alisonway@tiscali.co.uk, 01793 739044

GRAVEYARD
Thank you to everyone who helps to look after our Village Churchyard, whether you are caring for a family grave or have helped with the more general tidy up. There will be no more working parties this year but we shall endeavour to continue with this tidy up project next Spring.
WHITE HORSE CLEANING SESSION 23RD OCTOBER FROM 10 O'CLOCK
Its that time of year when the White Horse needs a final brush over for the winter. Please assemble at the monument for 10 o'clock if you can. The session will include the removal of debris and leaf-litter along with the digging out of any weeds that have taken hold. Good footwear and garden implements (rakes and trowels) are a must. All welcome. Tea and cakes as usual at East Farm House afterwards. Please note the horse can only be accessed by foot. Please do not take any vehicles beyond Chapel Lane. It is not the responsibility of the White Horse team if you do and fall foul of the landowner.
School Information Board. As many of you are aware the notice board at the school has seen better days. Earlier this year Classes 2 & 3 helped the White Horse Team design a new board. It was hoped this would have been up for the start of the new school year. Unfortunately it proved difficult to find the appropriate funds to complete the task. Thankfully, due to the generosity of Maslin's Electronics, we are now in a position to re-cost and hopefully replace the board in the near future. It does, however, demonstrate how difficult funding can be for smaller groups from year to year. Currently we are putting together a bid for tools and equipment along with some major landscape work and hopefully a reserve to cover three to four years worth of lime. Whether the County Council supports this is problematic as the horse has only 'hand to mouth' funds currently. We will keep you posted.
BROAD TOWN SOCIAL CLUB
The social club are a friendly bunch who meets on Friday nights (from 8pm) for a chat, with a drink or a game of pool, darts and we also have a football table.
Membership is £2 for the year (Jan to Dec).
On Sundays we run a bingo with a weekly tote which is won every week, doors open 7pm eyes down at 8pm.
We will be holding our A.G M on 21st Oct. This is your chance to come and join us. We would like some extra people on the committee with fresh ideas, it is also a good time to come and have your say as to how you would like the club to run. You have to be a member to vote
We will be holding some events through the year:-
On Friday 28th October we will be holding a Halloween party from 8pm. There will be prizes for the best boy and girl in fancy dress and the best pumpkin. The music is by Sounds City Discotheques. Raffle (Adults only). Adults £2, Children over 5 £1. ALL CHILDREN MUST BE ACCOMPANIED BY AN ADULT.
On Friday 18th November we will be having live music by AUDIO VANDALS. We will have a barrel of real ale and entry is free. PLEASE NOTE THE NEW DATE.
On Saturday 17th December it will be our Christmas draw and bingo. You must be a member to enter the draw. Doors open 7pm eyes down 8pm.
More events will be announced.
CHRISTMAS COFFEE MORNING
The café will be open on Sat 26th Nov for our annual Christmas coffee morning. There will be the usual stalls – photos, cards, Christmas goodies and refreshments and the raffle will be drawn. Tickets for the raffle will be on sale soon. Do join us for a friendly chat and good company.
PARISH COUNCIL CLERKS CLIPPINGS
1. Speedwatch. I had gained the impression, as had others that speeding through the Village had decreased slightly. I understand now that our statisticians say that the figures do not support this. Hey Ho, I got it wrong again.
2. On this topic, some members of the Speedwatch team have been subjected to verbal abuse, a pretty shabby way to behave towards a group of people doing their best to improve our Village. Trust that they were not local residents
3. Redhills. The Parish Council's attempt to take Redhills under the Community Transfer Plan is moving along apace. It has been recommended to the Area Board; we await the outcome.
4. Physical measures to improve the safety of the roads are also still alive and well. We have high hopes that part of the cost will be borne by the Area Highways Board; we are seeking funding from other sources to make up the difference.
5. Cllr John Brain has resigned from the Parish Council. The procedure for an election to replace him is in place. See the Notice Boards.
BROAD TOWN WI
Thank you to everyone who came to visit our cake stall at the Big Gig - we had a great time and really enjoyed meeting you all. We had brilliant feedback about how good our cakes looked and tasted and the coffee machine was a huge hit (thank you again Richard Wylie). Thank you too, to the Big Gig for supporting our WI and allowing us to be one of your food providers, plus thanks for a fantastic night - the best Big Gig yet!
The guest speaker of the Broad Town WI last month was Tony Strafford, a former Yeoman of the Guard resplendent in his splendid 'Beefeater' uniform. His topic was 'the Ladies of the Tower' (no surprises there - the uniform was a bit of a giveaway). However, Tony covered more than the Ladies and more than the Tower; a natural raconteur, his stories started with the builder of the Tower - William the Conqueror - and went on to include bloody tales from English history, some which many people knew and others which we didn't. His gleeful recounting of how the English beat the French was met with much laughter as our French member was pointed out to him. From then on he toned down his enthusiasm for English victories and only briefly mentioned Agincourt – but I think he got away with it! The talk was educational, amusing and thoroughly entertaining.
The WI meet every third Wednesday at 7:30 in the Village Hall and new members are very welcome. Our speaker this month is Geoffrey Carr and his topic is 'Loss of the Titanic and a Melksham family'. Give Jenny (739268) or Sandra (731523) a call for a chat if you want to know more about who we are and what we do.
BIG GIG – 3rd September 2011
We said it would be the best yet and it certainly was! To get straight to the nitty – gritty, the event was not only a great night of music, food, fun and socialising, but also a financial success - we can announce that from the event proceeds we will donate £1,000 to Help for Heroes, plus there will be a pot of £2,000 available to village organisations. Please contact any of the committee or email biggig@broadtownshow.co.uk should your organisation require financial assistance, by the 31st October 2011. Please ensure you give a full description of the purpose of the request, including the benefit(s) to the village.
On top of these donations, the Social Club, W.I., Pre-School and Rotary all raised funds for themselves through their hard work on the night - Broad Town should be proud of what was achieved on the 3rd September.
We could not put on the Big Gig without the financial, physical and emotional support of our sponsors, our friends and people from the village, so no apologies for a word of thanks to: Ray and Maybell Bourton for use of the land, the upgraded and excellent bar provided by Broad Town Social Club, delicious cakes and hot beverages supplied by Broad Town W.I., the entertainment provided by Broad Town Pre-School to the young (and not so young!), everyone who helped put up the tents, prepare and clear up the site or worked on the gate, all the great bands that kept us entertained and anyone else we may have forgotten. Finally a mention and a bit of recognition for your Big Gig committee; they have worked tirelessly over the last 10 months to create a music festival that is now recognised as one of the best in the area: Keith Newman, Marcus Galea, Chris King, James Harvey-Samuel, Andrew Law, Matt Parry, Matt Rogers, Gill Richardson Graham Wallis, Richard Wylie and latterly Matt Nailon - and thanks to our long suffering partners.
If you haven’t already seen the stunning photos on Facebook (and yet another thank you to Philip Male Photography), there is a link on our website.
Finally, a date for your diary: Broad Town Show AGM will be held on Tuesday, November 22nd at 8:15pm in the Village Hall. If you want to be part of the Big Gig and have a few hours to spare each month, please come along and join us – your village needs you!

NEW NON EMERGENCY NUMBER FOR WILTSHIRE POLICE
Wiltshire Police has changed its non emergency number to 101.
The 101 number is being introduced nationally in phases and on 19 September it was launched across forces in the South West, including Wiltshire.
Although 999 is a well recognised number to report emergencies, the 2010 British Crime Survey found that only half of the public knew which number to call if they wanted to speak to their local police about policing, non-urgent crime and anti-social behaviour. Wiltshire Police's Head of Contact Management, Chief Inspector Charlie Armstrong, said: "Changing our non emergency contact number to 101 makes it much easier for people to contact us. It is easy to remember and will be used by all forces across the country by the beginning of 2012. "We are constantly looking for ways to build on and improve our service to the public and this change is a positive one that we are confident will be welcomed by our communities."
Wiltshire Police Authority Chairman, Christopher Hoare, said: "The introduction of 101 provides the public of Wiltshire and Swindon with an easier number to remember for contacting Wiltshire Police. "Calls to 101 are automatically directed to the nearest police force, so I can assure the public that calls from Wiltshire will be answered by Wiltshire Police staff."
Calls to 101 cost 15p per call, irrespective of how long that call may last. This applies to landlines and mobile phones.
People with hearing or speech impairments are able to use the non emergency textphone number 18001101.
The 101 number replaces the existing non emergency number (0845 4087000) for Wiltshire Police. The 101 number should be used for all non emergencies such as: reporting a crime, contacting local officers, getting crime prevention advice, making an appointment with a police officer or making us aware of policing issues in your area.
It does not replace 999, which should be used in an emergency, such as when a crime is in progress, when there is danger to life or when violence is being used or threatened.
To find out more about 101, visit the Wiltshire Police website www.wiltshire.police.uk or look out for posters and flyers that have been distributed countywide.
