REVEREND ALISON WAY

During April each of the parishes has it’s Annual parochial church meeting. Everyone is most welcome to attend, so do come along and learn more about the life and work of the Church in your parish and across the benefice of Woodhill as a whole. There is also an opportunity to thank the many people who work so hard and in so many different ways to keep each of our beautiful churches in such good order. The meetings are: Sunday April 7^th in Christchurch Broad Town at 11:50am approx.

Monday April 8^th in St Giles Tockenham at 7:30pm. Sunday April 14^th in St Lawrence Hilmarton at 11:50am approx. Sunday April 28^th in St Peter’s Clyffe Pypard at 11:50am approx.

Then looking forward a bit onto May 5^th 2013 – we will be worshipping at each Church in the benefice and walking between them, to mark Rogation. Traditionally this is the time when people ‘beat the boundaries’ of their parishes. The poet George Herbert interpreted Rogation ‘as a means of asking for God’s blessing on the land, of preserving boundaries and of encouraging fellowship between neighbours with the reconciling of differences’. In more recent times, the scope of Rogation has been widened to include petition for the world of work, for accountable stewardship, and prayer for local communities, as well as prayers for God’s blessing on the land.

The schedule for the day starts with Holy Communion at St Lawrence’s Hilmarton at 9am. We then walk to St Giles Tockenham and have a Rogation Service there at approximately 12 noon. We will have our packed lunches and a breather there, then on to St Peter’s Clyffe Pypard for a Rogation Service at around 2:30pm – before the final walk to Christchurch Broad Town. The day will culminate in a ‘Songs of Praise’ Service for Rogation at 5pm in Christchurch Broad Town. Please do join us for us much of this (or as little of this) as you can. Even if you walk on one stage of our journey or travel in a car between you will be most welcome. If you are with us for the whole day you will be better off in walking boots, bright walking clothes and a packed lunch. I will also pray for favourable weather! ANNUAL MEETING OF PARISHIONERS.

This year the annual meeting will be on April 7^th at 11.45am in the Church. This meeting is for members of the parish to elect the Church Wardens. Sara Richardson has decided to step down but Janet Drury is prepared to stand again. We thank Sara for all her hard work over the last few years.

This is followed by the Annual Parochial Church Meeting

The annual report for 2012 will be available showing the state and finances of the Church.

WI

At our March meeting, the WI presented David Scattergood a volunteer for the Wiltshire Air Ambulance Charitable Trust (WAACT) with a cheque for £150. After his thanks David gave us an interesting talk about the work of this worthwhile cause. The Wiltshire Air Ambulance started fully as a joint venture with the police in 1990. The leased helicopter, 6 paramedics, 4 pilots and police observers are all based at Devizes and the WAACT contribution towards running costs is £700,000. The ambulance can get to any incident in Wiltshire within 11 minutes and last year they attended 629 incidents which included 126 road traffic, 85 sports related,146 heart attacks, 21 paediatric collapses. They also pioneered the use of defibrillators while in flight which is now used by other air ambulances. This successful joint venture with the police ends in October 2014 when a national police service is to be introduced. It will then cost two and a half million pounds to keep the ambulance in the air! David encouraged anyone interested in volunteering time or as a fundraiser to look at the website www.wiltshireairambulance.co.uk.

This month, on Wednesday 17 April, Thomas Plant (with Hugo Marsh) is coming to give a talk and value antiques. Tickets have sold well but there are still a few left. We would like to raise as much money as possible for the 5 – 18 Counselling Project whilst at the same time have an enjoyable evening. £10 per ticket to include refreshments. BROAD TOWN C OF E SCHOOL

Congratulations to the school Gymnastics team for gaining first place at the Schools Cluster Competition.

BROAD TOWN WHITE HORSE

Dates for your diary. We are intending holding 2 consecutive cleaning and liming mornings on 13^th – 14^th April. The reason for this extended session is two-fold. As you will be aware all our attempts to clean the hill figure last year were frustrated because of the weather. Subsequently the horse is now in a bit of a state and we estimate it will take a full day to recover. Rather than committing a full day we are offering two mornings instead – hopefully this means more people will be able to help as last time only five people could make it. Saturday will be concerned with weeding and strimming; Sunday will finish up any work not finished the day before and then lime the horse. We do hope you will be able to help us. One or both days would be much appreciated. We would also like to thank Broad Town Parish Council for their recent generous donation. Contact Bob Clarke on 731853 for more details.

Table Tennis

Thanks to a donation from Frederick and Rosemary Cameron Street of Broadacres, the Four Ways now has its own regulation-size table tennis table – free to play every Friday night starting in April, joining our free-to-play official pub pool table for folks aged 12+. Also: table football, darts; listen to your favourite tunes by hooking your mp3 player up to our new professional 4-speaker sound system.

Advance warning – SKITTLES

Several of our regulars are interested in forming an official Four Ways skittles team (or two, if there’s sufficient bodies) to play other pubs, clubs and teams in the local leagues when the new season starts later in the year. Please get in touch with us ASAP if you’re interested: we want to set the date for our first skittles event that’s convenient to most people: if a Saturday afternoon/evening or weekday night is when most people can come, that’s when we’ll hold it.

BROAD TOWN COMMUNITY LED PLANNING (CLP) GROUP

Although things seem to have gone quiet after the recent consultation events the work on the proposed Neighbourhood Plan is still continuing by the various groups that are involved.

The application for Broad Town to join with six other local parishes to form a Neighbourhood Area is now being considered by Wiltshire Council and we are waiting to see if it will be accepted. If it is, the individual Plan for each of the villages will be joined together to form one Neighbourhood Plan for the whole area.

The data collected at the consultation events, together with further data that will be collected during the ongoing consultation process, will feed into the Broad Town section of the Neighbourhood Plan. The preliminary information from the consultation shows that the majority of people who responded were aged between 45 and 74 – so we need some of you younger and older people to come forward with your opinions – and that the top three issues raised in the “postcards from the future” that you wrote were: Facilities; Shops/Cafes/Pubs; and Schools.

If you are interested in the details of the Neighbourhood Plan process the Project Managers have set up a website www.new-v.co.uk. Additionally we have a Community Forum site on www.broad-town.co.uk. Everyone is very welcome to come along to our next CLP Group meeting that will be held on Friday April 26^th 8.15 p.m. to 9.15 p.m. at the Village Hall.

PARISH CLERKS CLIPPINGS

1. The election for one County Councillor and seven Parish Councillors will be held on Thursday 2nd May. See the notice boards for details and procedure if you wish to stand. The Clerk has some information. The latest date for application forms to be returned is mid-day on 5th April 2013.

2. Neighbourhood Planning. Information on North East Wiltshire - Villages is on website www.new-v.co.uk

3. The Annual Parish Meeting will be held in the Village Hall on Monday 8th April at 19.30 hrs. This is your meeting; if you run a Village organisation, come and give a report on your activities, register a point of view, or merely listen to what is going on. It will be followed by the normal monthly Parish Council meeting.

PLANT FAIR AND OPEN GARDEN

Bank Holiday Monday 6th May, 11am —4pm at Bushton Manor, Wiltshire SN4 7PX

Come and join the fun at the annual Plant Fair and Open Gardens. Many stalls of value Plants, Shrubs and Annual Bedding from local growers, local artisan foods, pots & planters and rural crafts.

There are games for Children, the traditional well-stocked raffle and a garden-themed tombola.

The Manor Gardens are open throughout the day and visitors are free to wander at their leisure. Refreshments are also available throughout the day: Tea, coffee with locally made sumptuous cake or scone £2, Bacon butties or Ploughman's rolls £3.

Parking is free. Disabled access but please note gravel pathways. Toilets, including disabled toilets are available at the Village Hall, nearby.

THE GUILD OF WILTSHIRE ARTISTS

Run workshops at the Village Hall on every third Saturday of the month from 10am to 4pm. All are welcome including painters who are beginners.
