Marriage Celebration

* Denotes a service that is particularly suitable for all ages.

“CELEBRATING MARRIAGE”

This will be a special service in Christ Church, Broad Town at 10.30am on Sunday 29th April. All are welcome. The service will be followed by refreshments. Please come to give thanks for your marriage. If anyone has lost their other half please come to celebrate the time you had together.

FLOWER FESTIVAL AND SCARECROW COMPETITION

The entry forms for the Scarecrow Competition are attached to the back of the newsletter this month. The theme of Books is vast so we expect a great variety of entries, whether you use a children’s book or an adults’ book; fact or fiction. If two or more families wish to work together that is fine. All we ask is that you have a think about it and then enter. We had a lot of entries two years ago and it would be nice to have even more this year.

The planning for the Flower Festival is well under way and has the same theme of books. We have been fundraising towards the cost of the flowers and if you would like to make a donation it would be greatly appreciated. Perhaps you would like to sponsor one of the arrangements (£30) in memory of a loved one. Please contact Sara on 731114 or Rosie on 731526

REVEREND ALISON WAY

As April begins our observance of Lent moves into Holy Week. Holy week encompasses a wide range of worship and helps us to grow in our understanding of all God has done for us. It begins with the contrasts of the joys of the palm procession singing ‘All glory, laud and honour to thee, Redeemer, King’ and the passion gospel on Palm Sunday (April 1st).

Our next stop is re-enacting the last supper of Jesus with his disciples gathered round the communion table on Maundy Thursday (April 5th). On Good Friday (April 6th) we reflect on why Jesus died for us on the cross. There are two services that day one with families and children in mind in the morning, and one reflective and more musical aimed at adults in the early afternoon. This day we ‘survey the wondrous cross’ once again and really remember.

Our marking of Easter begins with a very special vigil and first communion of Easter on Saturday evening (April 7th), and then through 3 services on Easter Day (April 8th) to celebrate how Jesus rose from the dead. The song on our hearts and our lips is ‘Thine be the glory, risen conquering Son, endless is the victory thou over death has won!’.

What is where across the benefice churches is detailed above. Can I take this opportunity to wish you a joy-filled Easter as we reflect once again on all that God has done for us through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, our Saviour.

With love in Christ, Alison Way, Rector, Benefice of Woodhill.

WHITE HORSE CLEANING AND LIMING SESSION 10AM, SUNDAY 29TH APRIL.

This year’s spring clean and lime is a little later than normal due to the amount of holidays throughout April and May. As with other years please wear old clothes or overalls, strong footwear and bring a drink. Garden tools – especially rakes, hand forks and trowels - will be needed. All welcome – no prior knowledge or training necessary.

Please remember there is no vehicle access beyond the end of Chapel Lane – the final stretch is on foot.

Tea and Cakes offered as the usual reward at East Farm House afterwards.

Contact Bob on 01793 731853 for further details.

BROAD TOWN WI

Broad Town WI was visited by Peter Knight who came to talk about Church Symbolism. The title didn’t really give that much away and was so much more than we might have imagined, covering symbolism from thousands of years ago and long before Christianity. This was an absolutely fascinating talk that crammed over 20 years of research into a far-too-short hour. Long before man could write, things that were important to daily life were represented in symbols and these became incorporated into the religions of the day. Many Pagan and Egyptian symbols can be seen in Church symbolism (hence the talk title) as churches tended to be built where there were existing religious sites and used familiar symbols to encourage the pagan worshippers to switch religions! Cunning hey?! Peter showed us images from numerous churches of the Green Man, Dragons and snakes, hexagons and even the pentacle; a shape synonymous with witches, an example of which can be found in St Paul’s Cathedral! He explained what each represented e.g. abundance (Green Man), enlightenment (the Holy Grail) etc. We shall be looking at churches with complete different eyes from now on.

Broad Town WI meets on the 3rd Wednesday of every month and welcome new members. Please contact Jenny (739268) or Sandra (731523) to find out more.

BROAD TOWN COMMUNITY LED PLANNING GROUP

The next meeting of the Broad Town Community Led Planning Group will take place on Friday 27th April at 8 p.m. at the Village Hall, happily coinciding with the Social Club evening. We would like to invite any interested residents of Broad Town to come along to hear about the latest meeting of the Royal Wootton Bassett & Cricklade Area Neighbourhood Plan Steering Group that will be held on 27th March and to share any views on our participation in the proposed Neighbourhood Plan. You will not be asked to give any commitment to join the CLP Group and we genuinely welcome your opinions on the proposals as we want to be clear that we are representing YOUR views when we attend the Steering Group meetings.

Our representative on the Steering Group is Mike Broomfield and he has informed us that the Steering Group is considering appointing a Project Manager, to bring about the proposed Neighbourhood Plan, at its next meeting on 27th March. Mike has also been invited to another meeting on the 28th March for “key local people interested in shaping the services and facilities in our area”. This means that there will be a lot of information to pass on to you following these meetings that we want to make sure all residents have access to. We will be providing an update in the next Parish Newsletter and Mike is happy for residents to contact him by e-mail at: michaelbroomfield@btinternet.com.

PARISH CLERKS CLIPPINGS

Unfortunately this month is mainly moans, but there is a little good news.

1) The road safety improvements are coming; they should be in place in April. Although designed to help make the road safer, nothing will improve until drivers take note of the speed limits. Unfortunately some Villagers don’t seem to think this is important.

2) Redhills. The season of young people collecting on the Playing Field to drink and smoke is upon us again. The Council can do very little about it if parents will not take responsibility for their children. Redhills Playing Field is a public recreation area; it is a tragedy that young children cannot go there because of the behaviour of a few badly behaved teenagers.

3) Dog fouling again, particularly on the grass in front of The Pinnocks. Please be aware that not only allowing dogs to foul a public space anti-social, it is also against the law. Maybe a hefty fine would encourage the owner to behave in a more responsible way.

4) The next meeting of the Parish Council is on TUESDAY 17th April 2012. This will be the Annual Parish Meeting, at which reports will be given, and questions answered. As with all Parish Council meetings, these are open meetings and the public are invited to attend.

BROAD TOWN COMMUNITY SPEED WATCH

Around 30 survey sessions were conducted in March by your CSW team, the lighter mornings allowing some early starts. Between 0630 and 0800, there were some instances where 75% of vehicles were logged in the 30mph zone exceeding the limit by a significant margin, including

A school bus travelling at nearly 40mph

A Jaguar saloon at 55mph in foggy conditions

A black hatchback doing at least 60mph

Additionally, a VW van towing a catering trailer repeatedly recorded heading South through Broad Town at speeds approaching 50mph is being targeted for further action by Wilshire Police.

With the clocks moving to BST, our appeal for more volunteers continues: if you can spare just two non-consecutive hours per month – particularly for evening sessions 6pm-8pm – you too can contribute to Broad Town's Community Speed Watch initiative. Come along and try it out before you commit or criticise: have a go with the speed detection equipment yourself, and share your opinions with us about how we can all work together to help make our village safer for householders and pedestrians alike. Everyone is welcome to drop in on our sessions in the Post Box lay-by 1100-1200 Sunday mornings. See you there!

Thank you for all your email enquiries and messages of support so far in 2012 – everyone will get their individual answer in the next fortnight: we had to ask Wiltshire Council, the Highways Agency and Wiltshire Police about some of your questions, particularly those concerning Thornhill.

BUSHTON & CLYFFE PYPARD SPRING PLANT FAIR Bank Holiday Monday May 7th

Spring is well and truly on the way when thoughts turn to this year’s Plant Fair and Open Garden on Bank Holiday Monday May 7th at Bushton Manor, Bushton, SN6 8PX, courtesy of the Angus family, in aid of St Peter’s Church, Clyffe Pypard.

This fantastically popular day out will again be attracting plant stalls from around Wiltshire, promising to help stock the garden and vegetable patch with a vast array of very reasonably priced plants. There will also be lots of other stalls and games for the children, as well as a new bacon butty barbeque and of course the famous mouth-watering cakes with tea.

Opening times: 11.00am to 4.00pm

Entry: Adults £1 and children 50p.

BARN DANCE

There will be a Barn Dance on 7th July at Cliffansty Farm, Clevancy for anyone who wishes to go. Dancing will be to WILTSHIRE KLOF and they have a “caller” so you won’t have any problems with the steps. Tickets will be available locally. Please watch for more details.

Because of the Barn Dance there will be no Benefice outing this year.

BIG GIG 1st September 2012

First Big Gig band announcement of 2012! This year’s headliners have been secured and they are the world’s leading tribute to Coldplay – Coldplace. Just back from a tour of the Netherlands and Turkey, Coldplace are a tribute band whose quality and experience are second to none. In 7 years the band have over 300 gigs under their belts across the length and breadth of the UK and abroad in 16 different countries including Malta, Dominican Republic, Romania, Germany, Belgium and Russia, plus exposure on Sky News, BBC Radio One, BBC Radio Two and many local radio stations.

We have also already booked several local artists and have several more in mind with some exciting departures from our usual format, but will announce more next month. Our website is also being revamped and we will be gearing up for a marketing push in the summer, but fear not, you good people will be first to know the availability of tickets. Given the growing popularity of the Big Gig and currently with over 1,100 friends on Facebook, tickets will sell like hotcakes. You have been warned! J

In the meantime, if you have any suggestions, bandwise or otherwise, feel free to get in touch via our website or facebook.
