REVEREND ALISON WAY
Marking Lammas time is a much more ancient tradition than celebrating the end of the Harvest through a harvest festival, The latter was popularised by the Victorians and most notably by the Reverend Robert Hawker. In contrast from Old Testament times, the people of God presented to the Lord an offering of their first-fruits as a sign of their dependence upon God for their daily bread, which is the idea behind Lammas. This is described in Leviticus where it says When you enter the land that I am giving you and you reap its harvest, you shall bring the sheaf of the first fruits of your harvest to the priest (Lev 23:10).
In this country in medieval times through to the times of Henry VIII, it was common for farmers to bring a newly baked loaf, made from first flour of the new wheat harvest as our offering in thanksgiving to God for his faithfulness at the beginning of August. This coincided with the start of the harvest. This loaf was then used as the Communion bread and Lammas is actually a contraction of the words Loaf and Mass!
We will mark Lammas in our worship in the benefice in the services on August 5th and all would be most welcome. In particular, if you offer some flour from the new wheat harvest do get in touch with me! Do also put the dates for our Harvest Festivals in your diary and watch out for details of the harvest suppers/teas to go with them. Here’s the harvest festival dates
Harvest festival Family Communion 9:15am in St Giles Tockenham on 7th October
Harvest festival Family Communion 9:15am in St Peter’s Clyffe Pypard on 14th October
Harvest festival Family Service 11am in St Laurence’s Hilmarton on 14th October
Harvest festival Songs of Praise 6pm in Christchurch Broad Town on 14th October
With love in Christ, Alison Way, Rector, Benefice of Woodhill.

Thank you to all who made scarecrows. They were of a high standard this year. The winners were

BROAD TOWN SCHOOL
This term the School said “Good Bye” to Mrs Mitchell who has been the teacher of Class 1 for the last seven years. We wish her well at her new appointment.
We send Congratulations and Best Wishes to Miss Hyner who is getting married during the holiday.
There will be a lot of work going on at the school over the holiday and they have been granted two extra days closure to unpack everything and sort the school out and tidy up.
These days are the 3rd and 4th of Sept. So the TT day has moved to the 5th of Sept and School recommences on the 6th Sept.
PARISH CLERKS CLIPPINGS
1. Road Safety Work is now completed. All we have to do now is to obey the speed limit.
2. Minutes. If you wish to know what is going on, read the Parish Council meeting minutes. They are on the notice boards, and the Broad Town website, where the past few years are available. No computer? the Parish Clerk can let you have a copy. Bear in mind that the minutes are a record of decisions made, not a novelette of everything that is said at the meeting. If you want to know that, come to the meetings.
BROAD TOWN WI
Last month we sampled the taste of summer, despite the weather, with a rosé wine tasting evening. Our speaker was Richard Brazier, the husband of one of the members and very knowledgeable on all types of wine. He gave us a short history of wine drinking in the UK over the decades. Wine didn’t become available to the average person until the 60’s and 70’s when it was only bought for special occasions. Pub drinks around this time were more likely to be Cinzano, Dubonnet and lemonade or rum and blackcurrant.
The first wines widely available were mainly French wines and were expensive and not very good. German wine producers introduced us to more drinkable and affordable wines such as Liebfraumilch. Richard had four rosé wines to taste and compare. It was amazing how different they were, in colour, perfume and flavour and we voted on our favourites.
Thanks to Richard we had a lovely evening, which ended with savoury nibbles and the remains of the wine.
This month we will be walking around Malmesbury; finishing in the town with a pub meal.
BROAD TOWN SOCIAL CLUB
As well as welcoming new faces to Bingo every Sunday evening from 7pm, we're pleased to announce:
Friday 3rd August
Pints of Becks, cider and proper ales for £2.40 or less, darts, pool, tall stories and good cheer – your regular night, in fact!
Friday 10th August – DANCE THE NIGHT AWAY!
Kevin Howard's BIG THREE-OH birthday bash! Fresh from his triumphant placing in Scania's 2012 Young European Truck Driver competition, HGV maestro Kev is keen to get both old and brand-new friends alike boogie-ing to the sounds of Starlight Express Digital Disco: all welcome!
Friday 17th August – COMMUNITY PUB NAMING
Did you choose the winning name? Bring your green ticket – it may get you another free drink! Regional media are tipped to attend: there's one playgroup/school fete group photo from the early 1970s that we'd love to recreate now the subjects are a little longer in the tooth! Come and celebrate with friends and neighbours, reflecting on good times past, and great times yet to come! Announcement takes place at 2100 – don't be late!
Friday 31st August & Sunday 2nd September – CLOSED
Neither the Community Pub nor Bingo will be taking place on the above dates. All are welcome to help Keith and the Big Gig team put up tents on Monday 27th August though: see elsewhere in this newsletter...
Friday 21st September – Cider-making
Thanks to the rain ruining everyone's crop of fruits, we're expanding our original plan for a cider-making evening to include wine as well. Participants will need 3lb+ of home-grown fruit (fresh or defrosted – probably a good year for blackberries!) to make their own gallon of wine, or 6-7lb of apples for cider. Any donors of unwanted fruit or loans/gifts of home-brew kit – especially fermenting bins airlocks and demi-johns – would be greatly appreciated: drop by any Friday evening for a natter about home-brew or call Matthew on 07890 097915. More details next month's newsletter.
BROAD TOWN COMMUNITY SPEED WATCH
In response to several enquiries: Broad Town CSW team will be able to comment about any change in numbers of speeders following safety measures such as installation of the gates at the edges of speed-limit areas and the new 30mph roundels painted on the roads in September or October's newsletter – as soon as Wiltshire Police and County Council interpret the figures.
Your CSW team depends on volunteers: if you can spare just two non-consecutive hours per month – particularly for evening sessions weekdays 4.30pm-8pm – you too can contribute to Broad Town's Community Speed Watch initiative. Everyone is welcome to drop in on our sessions held at various locations in the village 1100-1200 Sunday mornings. Come along and try it out with no pressure to commit: have a go with the speed detection equipment yourself, and share your opinions with us about how we can all work together to help make our village more pleasant and safe for householders and pedestrians alike.
Following their highly successful test-shoot in July, a BBC2 film-crew will be returning to Broad Town during August to record your village's CSW team in action for their documentary, to be broadcast in the autumn. If you would like to make your support or criticism about community-led road safety efforts heard on a national level, please contact Matt on 731499 or email oscar.littlelad@gmail.com

BIG GIG – 1st Sept 2012
Just a handful of weeks to go and the Big Gig 2012 is shaping up to be the best yet. Our fantastic line-up covers all tastes, from a full scale Big Band (the B.J. Big Band) playing classic swing numbers, to the gentle folk of Itchy Feet, top solo artists such as Ali Finneran, Theo Altieri and Danny McEvoy (check him out on YouTube), contemporary folk-rock from Bateleurs, electro-rock from Atari Pilot, the smooth groove of Kolakoka, the driving sounds of the refreshed line-up in Teddy White, the full on blow your socks off indie of Young Blood, an electro-pop artist by name of Queen of Hearts (who is appearing at a London Olympics event in Hyde Park) and the world’s leading tribute to Coldplay, Coldplace. And we are still finalsing other artists!
To fit all this in, gates will be opening at 15:15 this year, so get along early so you don’t miss out. We also have the fairground and Kaya Drums providing sessions in their tepee, food outlets serving BBQ, Curries, Crepes, tea, coffee and cakes and of course the well stocked bar serving real ales and other traditional alcoholic and soft drinks.
Tickets can be purchased on our website and at selected local outlets, so get in early to guarantee your attendance, or ring James on 731108 to reserve tickets.
We plan to erect the tents on the afternoon of the Bank Holiday Monday 27th August – we need as many to lend a hand as possible so if you can spare a few hours and like free beer, let Andrew know so we can you keep you posted should arrangements change: secretary@broadtownshow.co.uk
