The Patronal Festival celebration for St Peter’s Day – Benefice Communion at 10:30 at St Peter’s Clyffe Pypard on Sunday July 1^st

The Teddy Bear’s bring and share picnic at Tockenham Play area from 3pm on Sunday 1^st July (in the village hall if wet) – particularly for key stage one and two children and their families and their bears of course!

A Coffee morning in Tockenham Village Hall on Wednesday 4^th July from 10:30am

On 14^th and 15^th July there is Broad Town ‘Posies and Prose’ flower festival in ChristChurch Broad Town – open during the day. This rounds off with a special songs of praise service at 6pm on Sunday 15^th July

On 14^th July there is Tockenham Fair in the afternoon, and again a special songs of praise service at 6pm on Sunday 15^th July in St Giles Church

On 15^th July – our first ever Animal Blessing Service at 11am in St Lawrence, Hilmarton – bring your well behaved pet or a picture of them (if that is more practical!).

Then in our country after the long count down at the end of this month, we herald the arrival of the Olympics! Let’s pray this is celebration of human giftedness and endeavour, and a testament to the creativity of God in making us all different and uniquely talented. I also hope the Olympics will show us more of the human heart and spirit that inspired historic Olympians like Eric Liddell. In the film ‘Chariots of Fire’ he memorably said - I believe God made me for a purpose, but he also made me fast. And when I run I feel His pleasure.

BROAD TOWN SCHOOL

The school apologises to all who were disappointed with the cancellation of the school fete and fun run.

The weather was the main problem. The police rightly were concerned about the number of cars parked along the side of the road as the field was not available for parking.

BARN DANCE 7^th JULY

The Barn Dance is being run by a committee for the benefit of the whole Benefice. For anyone who enjoys an evening of fun and frolics the tickets are available from Margaret and Clive on 731511. The dancing is to WILTSHIRE KLOF and they have a “caller” so there will be no problem with the steps.

PETALS AND PROSE - BROAD TOWN FLOWER FESTIVAL

Come to see the Church in all its glory at the flower festival. The theme of this year’s event is BOOKS. The Church will be open from 10.30am till 6pm on both the Saturday 14^th and Sunday 15^th July. This is the principal fund-raising event of the year so please come to support us.

There will be refreshments in the marquee in the graveyard on sale for the whole two days, so come for a chat and sample the homemade cooking.

SCARECROW COMPETITION

This is being run in junction with the flower festival and the theme again is BOOKS. It can be fact or fiction, adult or children’s. There is an entry form at the back of the newsletter for anyone who wishes to enter the competition. As usual the judges are the public who go round the village to see the scarecrows.

Details of how to get the route for viewing is also on the entry sheet. Let’s try to make this the best ever year.

TOCKENHAM FUN RUN - SATURDAY 14TH JULY

The theme of Tockenham Summer Fair this year is going to be "Olympics", and, as part of this we will be holding a 5km off-road fun run. Whatever your experience, everyone aged 12 and over is welcome to participate. You can download an entry form from www.tockenhamvillagefair.co.uk or ring Diana Kirby on 01793 853861 to be sent a form.

On the day there will also be a shorter run for the under 12's, as well as some traditional children's race events.

Add to this all of our usual Summer Fair activities, and it will be a great day out for all the family. Why not come along and join in the Olympic spirit.

BROAD TOWN WI

Last month our meeting was attended by our local WI advisor Ray Tetlow. Our Speaker was Annabel Czyba from House of Colour. She explained that wearing colours that suit your skin tone will make you look healthier, younger, fresher and more dynamic, which helps build confidence. Annabel runs courses for women from all walks of life, from young mums who have lost their individual style to businesswomen who want to dress for their careers. Finally, Annabel demonstrated this by removing her jewellery, accessories and her makeup, which actually aged her before our eyes.

This month on Wednesday 18^th July, we look forward to welcoming Richard Brazier who will be presenting a wine tasting evening for us. We will be sampling and comparing some rosé wines. If you would like to come, please contact Beatrice on 01793 731566. Light refreshments are being provided by the committee.

We are a friendly WI and are keen to welcome new members, so please do come along and make new friends. Our meetings are on the third Wednesday of each month, apart from December when the date may vary. Currently we are trialling having our speaker before our meeting so please be arrive promptly at 7.30pm.

BROAD TOWN SOCIAL CLUB

Bar open every Friday from 8pm. Bingo every Sunday: eyes down 8pm, last ball 10pm – ALL WELCOME: all pool games FREE in July!

The indefinite hiatus of the historically much-loved pub in Clyffe Pypard sadly serves as sober underlining of the pressures faced by all local organisations, services and small businesses in rural communities such as ours: trying to meet customers' needs is tricky; but without our support, they vanish – never to return.

At the time of writing, for the fortnight our promotion has been running, we've had dozens of villagers eagerly filling out their questionnaires to receive their free drink in return – BUT WE NEED MORE! It's great to make new friends, and we've received a wealth of suggestions for some great future events. We're especially keen to involve more gardeners in a produce exchange, sign up more cider fans keen on making our own Broad-Cyder in September and round up a few more folks with a good set of lungs for the inevitable karaoke spectacular, about which Broad Town's Robson & Jerome are getting all excited...

So, has the new name for Village Hall bar been chosen? Is it the new Queen's Head, Grey Mare, or Horse On The Hill? Or will the swinging sign outside welcome weary ale-fans to the FourWays? We'll let you know the date of the grand announcement in Augusts newsletter – in the mean-time, we're extending the offer of a free drink for every parishioner until 10pm FRIDAY 6^th JULY!

There's still quite a few votes waiting to be cast – and free drinks to be claimed! If you can't find the questionnaire that was delivered to your door, get one at the Village Hall bar from 8pm, vote for your choice-of-name and exchange it for your free drink this very Friday!

BROAD TOWN COMMUNITY SPEED WATCH

Plenty of good news this month:

During June, our village CSW team's every-day efforts have been reinforced by Wiltshire Police's six official stop-sessions – performed by both area constables/PCSOs and specialist traffic officers – who have pulled over speeders and imposed fixed penalties, applying licence points and court summonses to motorists registering at over 45mph in the 30mph zone.

A significant number of vehicles that were recorded as repeat speeders in previous months have been recorded recently as travelling within the speed limit. Also, Wiltshire Police have forwarded to Broad Town CSW team several apology letters written by members of the public who were logged as speeding at some of the 150 locations monitored to the 360+ CSW volunteers county-wide. We're of course grateful to the drivers concerned for their increasingly considerate motoring!

Our Sunday 1100-1200 sessions have attracted over 100 people since they began: we're down to our very last few trolley-token key-rings: claim yours by coming along on any Sunday morning for a few minutes! Have a go yourself with the speed-detection equipment, and share your ideas about making our village a safe place for drivers and pedestrians alike. Thank You For Travelling At Thirty!

WHITE HORSE LIMING

Hopefully you have had a chance to see the new sign designed with the help of children from Broad Town School and funded by Maslins of Swindon. We are intending revisiting the White Horse on 29th July with a view to liming the hill figure. Assemble on the animal at 10:00 or there about. Please remember there is no vehicular access beyond the end of Chapel Lane. Old clothes and sensible footwear are a must. Trowels, spades and rakes will also be most welcome. BROAD TOWN ARCHAEOLOGICAL PROJECT

Broad Town Archaeological Project was formed in 1998. Its remit was to identify and investigate, utilising archaeological and historical methods, the many aspects of settlement in the immediate area. Many of you will remember our campaigns – often in winter and almost always accompanied by rain – measuring earthworks, monitoring building work, surface collection and even turning up the odd ancient burial! With a number of small exceptions, the landscape component of the project is now complete enough to formally write-up. Our focus is now the historical aspects of the area.

To date the Broad Town Charity records have been accessed, providing us with a framework history from 1750 to 1920, it is hoped we can push this back a further century or so using record maintained by the Somerset Record Office. We have also begun recording the older buildings in the village and hope to the have that completed by mid-next year. A number of events are proposed over the year, taking a number of forms. These will include ‘memory collection’ sessions and an update on work so far. We will be scoping the last of the historical work over the next few months and discussing with a number of village groups how best to complete these areas. The intention is to publish the project in its entirety towards the end of next year however, what form this will take is still in discussion. BROAD TOWN COMMUNITY LED PLANNING (CLP) GROUP

By the time you read this report the Broad Town CLP Group will have met on the 22^nd June at the Village Hall (with thanks to the Social Club) and the Royal Wootton Bassett Area Group (full title - The Royal Wotton Bassett and Cricklade Area Neighbourhood Planning Steering Group) will have held its Area meeting on 27^th June.

Mike Broomfield is our Broad Town CLP Representative at the Area Group, and through our meetings we can have a say in the progress of the proposed Neighbourhood Plan for the whole area consisting of Royal Wootton Bassett, Cricklade and surrounding villages, 14 towns and parishes in all.

With the new planning laws, we need to accept the new concept of Neighbourhood Planning. There is a difference between our Parish Plan which sets out local aspirations but has no legal status, and a Neighbourhood Plan that is a professionally prepared legal plan that requires robustness to stand up to legal scrutiny from e.g. developers. A Neighbourhood Plan will focus on “Development and Land Use” thus development proposals for Broad Town may be included. These development proposals will be decided by the community, partly through reference to the Parish Plan, and with additional information gathered at two proposed public meetings to be held after the summer by “Common Places”, the consultants appointed to ensure robustness in the Area Neighbourhood Plan project.

THE GUILD OF WILTSHIRE ARTISTS

Run workshops at the Village Hall on every third Saturday of the month from 10am to 4pm. All are welcome including painters who are beginners.

Tea and Coffee provided but do bring a packed lunch.

BIG GIG – 1^st Sept 2012

Thanks to everyone from Broad Town that attended the Little Gig on the 15^th June – the format worked brilliantly in The Crown and the music, food and ambiance made for a great night - feedback has been excellent; thank you.

As many of you will know, the school fete was unfortunately cancelled but we have judged the competition entrants from the children of Broad Town School and the winners are: Overall: Toby 9 (yr5) Runners up: Jem (yr3), Emily (yr4), Josh 11 (yr6)

All will receive a small prize and their artwork will appear in the Big Gig programme; Toby’s picture will be on the cover and his family will receive complimentary tickets to the Big Gig. Thanks to all the children who took part.

It is now only two months to the main event itself and we have put together a fantastic line-up covering many genres, from the B.J. Big Band playing classic swing numbers, to the gentle folk of Itchy Feet, top solo artists such as Ali Finneran, Theo Altieri and Danny McEvoy (check him out on YouTube), contemporary folk-rock from Bateleurs, electro-rock from Atari Pilot, the smooth groove of Kolakoka, the driving sounds of the refreshed line-up in Teddy White, the full on blow your socks off indie of Young Blood, an eight piece ska-funk-punk-reggae-rock band called 360 and the world’s leading tribute to Coldplay, Coldplace. And we are saving a slot for our “prodigal son” who is heading for international success, but we won’t name him until confirmed (fingers crossed)!

To fit all this in, gates will be opening at 15:15 this year, so get along early so you don’t miss out. We also have the fairground and Kaya Drums providing sessions in their tepee, food outlets serving BBQ, Curries, Crepes, tea, coffee and cakes and of course the well stocked bar serving real ales and other traditional alcoholic and soft drinks. Finally, an order has been put in for good weather!
