REVEREND ALISON WAY

In the church year in May we continue our celebrations of Easter. The 40 days of Lent are followed by 50 days of Eastertime, including when we mark Rogation, Ascension Day and Pentecost. For Ascension Day, we are holding a benefice communion at 7:30pm in St Laurence’s, Hilmarton, and in the run up to Pentecost there is a children’s work shop at Hilmarton Church Hall on Saturday 26^th May 2012 at 10am for key stage one and key stage two children and their parents. Do let me know if you are going to attend so we can have enough materials for all! Another treat coming up is that our Rural Dean The Reverend Canon Thomas Woodhouse will be leading our worship in Broad Town, Hilmarton and Clyffe Pypard on Pentecost Sunday.

Advance notice for your diaries - On the Sunday of the Diamond Jubilee weekend (3^rd June) we are going to have one early communion service in the benefice (including prayers for Her Majesty the Queen) and then three special services of thanksgiving for the Diamond Jubilee of Her Majesty the Queen. The timings and locations of the services are as follows: -

• 8am Communion with prayers for Her Majesty the Queen in St Peter’s, Clyffe Pypard.
• 9:15am Diamond Jubilee service in St Laurence’s, Hilmarton.
• 10:15am Diamond Jubilee service in St Giles’, Tockenham.
• 11:15am Diamond Jubilee Service in Christchurch, Broad Town.

DEATHS

This month we say “Goodbye and Thank You” to 2 good helpers of the Church.

Trevor Owen, who moved away with his wife Olive several years ago, had been Churchwarden and Treasurer over the years.

Frank Lovegrove used to maintain the Church graveyard.

We send our thoughts and condolences to both families at this sad time.

FLOWER FESTIVAL AND SCARECROW COMPETITION

Have you kept your entry forms for the scarecrow competition? If not, your name, address and name of book on a piece of paper through my door is sufficient – Margaret Green, 1 Broadacres. Let’s make this the best competition yet. The theme is “Books” so that gives a very wide range from children’s to adults, and from fact to fiction.

CALNE CHORAL SOCIETY CONCERT

The spring concert will be in St Mary’s School, Calne on Saturday 5^th May at 7.30pm. Music will be by Mozart, Haydn and Bruckner. For tickets contact S Fox on 01249 891442

HILMARTON MOVIOLA

Hilmarton will be showing the film “The Iron Lady” in the Church hall on Saturday 12^th May at 7.00pm for 7.30pm.

SCHOOL FETE AND FUN RUN

On 16^th June the school gates will again be open for the Fete and Fun Run. Anyone wishing to enter the fun run is to contact the school. Let’s hope that the weather is fine for this annual event.

BROAD TOWN WI

BT WI enjoyed a talk about Prospect, our local hospice, from Andrew Thompson who since the death of his wife has been working there. We learned that 60,000 hours of work was carried out last year by volunteers, some of whom are our members; which I'm sure you'll agree is a staggering amount. Prospect has to rely on much of its income from charitable sources to ensure it can continue to provide the high quality end of life care to those in need, in Swindon and its environs. This comes from many sources: various types of donation, profits from their shops and profit from their new café which everyone is welcome to use, not just those needing the hospice. Following Andrew was Caroline, who gave a personal talk on how Prospect supported her terminally ill husband and herself. She was incredibly up-beat and talked of how positive everyone working at Prospect is and how, when her husband died she vowed to raise £1,000 for each week Prospect cared for him – she raised £30,000. She confessed it was the first talk she’d ever given; we were all struck by how well she spoke (totally from the heart), how utterly she engaged us and at the end how moved we felt – what a great ambassador for Prospect!
Prospect are always looking for volunteers so if you have a spare hour or so they would love to hear from you.

BROAD TOWN SOCIAL CLUB

2012: is turning out to be an exciting year for the social club.

The Club is attracting new adult regulars of all ages to both the Friday night bar and Sunday Bingo – from teens/early twenties, to those of us experiencing our 'second youth', which makes for a fantastic friendly and light-hearted multi-generational atmosphere. We're open to all from 8pm every Friday, but would you be more likely to come along if we opened on Saturday evenings as well? Please tell us! You don't have to be a member, or even live in Broad Town: just pop in for a drink!

We're in the early stages of working out how to establish a regular programme of attractions for junior members (12+) and events for younger children, supervised by CRB-checked and fully trained entertainers/youth work volunteers. If you have any ideas and/or expertise – or your family would like to participate/help organise – come along any Friday night so we can pencil some things down for further development.

Our facilities improvement continues – the new fridge is chilling bottles, cans and white wine a treat, while other new equipment arrives in the next few weeks, along with further renovation to make evenings in the Village Hall more attractive to non-drinkers: soft drinks, snacks, sweets, tea, coffee, hot chocolate etc is always available!

Potential choppers, washers, scratters, mashers, pressers, bottlers, rattlers and rackers (and drinkers!) for our cider circle are beginning to sign up in early preparation for the home-brewing season. Interested in sharing equipment, tips, recipes, wine-making, brewing etc? Even if you've just got spare apples/pears that you can't eat or old homebrew kit you don't use and can lend us, come along and chat to us and we'll include you in our plans!

Also, several green-fingered people have asked the Social Club to help establish a Broad Town Gardeners' Produce Exchange on at least a twice-yearly basis. When you're growing a glut of something, being able to swap it for somebody else's spares does everyone a favour! September's obviously a good time for some fruit and veg, but if anyone's got any suggestions or ideas about sooner dates for crops that are ready earlier, we'd love to hear from you.

PARISH CLERKS CLIPPINGS

1. The transfer of the ownership of the Redhills Playing Field to the Parish is still on course. After considerable work by the previous Chairman, the Parish Council has been informed that there is quite a large sum of money available from County towards community projects, and improvement of the play area is a very obvious one. Is there anyone in the Village who would be prepared to run with this, and form a steering group. Contact a Councilor.

2. Will the person who regularly leaves a Sainbury's plastic bag, with an empty lager bottle and several beer cans (an underage drinker) on grass verges in the Village please stop doing it. Wiltshire Highways will take legal action if the culprit is identified.

3.Toxicara is a very nasty disease, which causes blindness in children, and is contracted through dog and cat mess. At the moment there is a consultation on action to be taken with offenders who do not clear up after their dogs. A £1,000 fine is on the cards, and a photograph of the offending action, with offender, could easily be obtained. An area of particular concern is the road through Thornhill, which is becoming one long line of dog droppings. 

BROAD TOWN COMMUNITY SPEED WATCH

Over the nine months that your CSW volunteers have been running (usually) hourly surveys in our village, in total we have logged over 2,500 speeders during 175 sessions.

Our key successes so far include that:

Our basic kerbside efficiency in recording speeders has more than doubled

Our effectiveness in identifying times at which drivers travel at over 50mph has tripled

Data your CSW had provided is helping Broad Town Parish Council and Area Board representatives bring effective traffic-management to our village: watch this space in future months for more details!

Unfortunately, over the last six weeks or so, there have been eight vehicles in particular – all belonging to one small company based at Whitehill Industrial Estate in Wootton Bassett – whose drivers habitually slow nearly to a halt to abuse and physically threaten CSW team-members, before deliberately driving off recklessly at speeds of up to 50mph, often in lorries heavily laden with construction materials. Strangely, they never exhibit this unacceptable behaviour whenever CSW teams including younger male members are performing a session. Descriptions of drivers and passengers responsible, vehicle registrations and full records of all incidents are currently in the hands of Wiltshire Police for further action. Any further instances of their aggressive and intimidating behaviour towards any CSW team in Broad Town or any other Wiltshire CSW location will be widely publicised in local press, radio and TV, identifying the company involved but giving them a chance to explain their side of the story.

Thank you to our latest new volunteer for sparing her couple of hours a month! We're also very grateful towards the nineteen people – both pedestrians and drivers – who have stopped to talk to us and show interest in our activities in the last few weeks: your support makes our sessions worthwhile. Due to some of our earlier-rising original members scaling back their contributions in the foreseeable future, we always need more volunteers! BUSHTON & CLYFFE PYPARD SPRING PLANT FAIR Bank Holiday Monday May 7^th

Spring is well and truly on the way when thoughts turn to this year’s Plant Fair and Open Garden on Bank Holiday Monday May 7^th at Bushton Manor, Bushton, SN6 8PX, courtesy of the Angus family, in aid of St Peter’s Church, Clyffe Pypard.

This fantastically popular day out will again be attracting plant stalls from around Wiltshire, promising to help stock the garden and vegetable patch with a vast array of very reasonably priced plants. There will also be lots of other stalls and games for the children, as well as a new bacon butty barbeque and of course the famous mouth-watering cakes with tea.

Opening times: 11.00am to 4.00pm Entry: Adults £1 and children 50p.

BARN DANCE

The tickets are now available for the Barn Dance on 7^th July at Cliffansty Farm, Clevancy. Dancing will be to WILTSHIRE KLOF and they have a “caller” so there should be no problems with the steps. Tickets are available from C & M Green on 731511.

BIG GIG 1^st September 2012

We have now chosen our principal charity for 2012 and this will be the Wiltshire Air Ambulance. We are also supporting another local charity, the Goldenhar Family Support Group, as their treasurer, Alan Holmes, has given great free support to the Big and Little Gigs over the past few years – his grandson suffers from Goldenhar Syndrome. And of course we will continue to support local causes in the village – as usual all charitable donations are subject to the financial success of the event.

The Big Gig will be represented at the School Fete on Saturday, 16^th June, so feel free to drop by and say “Hi”. We are also working with Broad Town School to challenge the children to come up with a design that will be incorporated into the Big Gig programme cover. We plan to exhibit the entries at the School Fete, so please help us judge the art work and pick a worthy winner.

Additionally, plans are progressing for a Little Gig in early summer, so watch out for the date and venue in the next newsletter.

Finally, we have made good progress on the music front and the line up is looking great, but we’re keeping that under our hat until our new website is ready for launch – so keep an eye out online.

THE GUILD OF WILTSHIRE ARTISTS

Run workshops at the Village Hall on every third Saturday of the month from 10am to 4pm. All are welcome including painters who are beginners.

Tea and Coffee provided but do bring a packed lunch.
