REVEREND ALISON WAY
A special prayer has been commissioned by the Chapter of St Paul’s Cathedral for Her Majesty’s Diamond Jubilee. It has been commended for use widely, and not least by the Archbishop’s of Canterbury and York. I am sharing it here in your village newsletter for your personal use, as we give thanks for the long reign of our Queen.
God of time and eternity, whose Son reigns as servant, not master; we give you thanks and praise that you have blessed this Nation, the Realms and Territories with Elizabeth our beloved and glorious Queen. In this year of Jubilee, grant her your gifts of love and joy and peace as she continues in faithful obedience to you, her Lord and God and in devoted service to her lands and peoples, and those of the Commonwealth, now and all the days of her life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
I hope we will all take heart in and from the coming Jubilee celebrations both local and national, and the special Diamond Jubilee Church Services too!
Also, do get in touch using my new email address if you wish to attend our bring and share Teddy bear’s picnic on Sunday 1st July, particularly for families with key stage one or two children and their bears in Tockenham play area from 3pm. As well as that in each community there are tickets available for our benefice barn dance on July 7th – so do come along to that too and enjoy the fun!

THEFT FROM BROAD TOWN SCHOOL
During the week of 14th May we had lead stolen from the roof of the school and our new school clock which was on the wall by the covered area, has been stolen since. The roof was accessed from round the back of the school.
Please could everyone be vigilant and let us know if you see anything suspicious around the school.
THE LONDON MARATHON
I would like to give a huge thank you to everyone who sponsored me in this years London Marathon. I completed the course in 4 hours 4 minutes & 48 seconds.
I managed to raise over £l800 for the charity TACT. Thank you all once again. Andrew Harris.
CHRISTIAN AID COLLECTION
This year envelopes were distributed along the Main Road, Broadacres and Pye Lane. Thank you to the three kind people who helped me collect the envelopes.
I would like to be able to collect from the whole village but would need more help. If anyone can spare a couple of hours next year please let me know at jrowe.0l@virgin.net
The total raised was £l96.68 of which £85 was gift aided.

FLOWER FESTIVAL AND SCARECROW COMPETITION
Have you kept your entry forms for the scarecrow competition? If not, your name, address and name of book on a piece of paper through my door is sufficient – Margaret Green, 1 Broadacres. Let’s make this the best competition yet. The theme is “Books” so that gives a very wide range from children’s to adults and from fact to fiction.
SCHOOL FETE AND FUN RUN
On 16th June the school gates will again be open for the Fete and Fun Run. Anyone wishing to enter the fun run is to contact the school. Let’s hope that the weather is fine for this annual event.
BROAD TOWN WI
Broad Town WI held their AGM on Wednesday 16th May at Jane Rowe’s home. After a very successful AGM, where three new officers were elected and new committee members volunteered, we all enjoyed a sociable evening of drinks, nibbles and nattering. The WI always welcomes new members and just to whet your appetite some of the upcoming events include: a talk from a Colour Expert and a Bollywood dancing ‘taster’.

BROAD TOWN SOCIAL CLUB
Toast the Jubilee with a FREE drink in June!
Whether you're an ardent Royalist happily hoisting your patriotic G-'n'-T to 'er Madge (gawd bless 'er), or a frothing republican fomenting revolution over your foaming flagon of proper ale,
every adult in the parish can claim one free drink each in June, with the chance to win a second one to be redeemed in July as well!
All we ask in return is that you complete a very quick survey (anonymously, if you so wish) which will help Broad Town Social Club plan future events, excursions, entertainment, celebrations and more into 2013 and beyond!
By Wednesday 6th June, most households in the parish will have received their Jubilee Questionnaires through their letterboxes: if you haven't, please leave a message with your name and address on 07890 097915 and a BTSC committee-member will drop yours round to you soon afterwards; or simply fill one out when you come along with your friends, family and neighbours on
any Friday in June after the Bank Holiday – 8th, 15th, 22nd, 29th – from 8pm onwards.
Full terms and conditions for claiming your free drink are printed on the questionnaire and also displayed at the bar in Broad Town Village Hall for the duration of the offer.

BROAD TOWN COMMUNITY SPEED WATCH
Developments in the last four weeks you may have noticed include:
A new portable banner by the road-side during CSW sessions thanking courteous, law-abiding drivers for observing the speed-limit
Greatly increased traffic police presence at busy times, resulting in legal action for several excessive speeders
New bright yellow CSW permanent signage at each end of the 30mph zone to encourage drivers to take extra care
The brand-new 30mph roundels painted on the road on both North and South carriageways are the result of much negotiation by particularly committed individuals who are not members of the CSW roadside crew giving up enormous amounts of their time to complete mountains of paperwork and attend things like Area Board meetings; as well as a lot of hard work by other village bodies such as the Parish Plan, Community-led Planning Group and the Parish Council. Broad Town CSW is very grateful for all these efforts made behind-the-scenes as it makes our tasks a lot easier!
At time of writing, Broad Town CSW has logged 20,528 vehicles passing through Broad Town in 192 sessions, representing nearly 580 volunteered man-hours of effort. Despite this several vehicles were monitored travelling at over 55mph in May, so your continued support and more volunteers are always needed. Our Sunday 1100-1200 “Everybody Welcome” sessions continue to be very successful in sparking interest and discussion about our activities. A big thank-you to the dozens of folks (and dogs!) who have stopped by for a chat and had a go on the equipment. – come and find us at any of our regular locations along Broad Town Road and help make our village safer. Broad Town CSW would like to reassure all drivers through our village that records of vehicle speeds and/or direction are only logged when the equipment is operated by trained volunteers. With the full support of Wiltshire Police, County Council and Broad Town Parish Council, we allow inquisitive family-members of all ages without discrimination to take part in our special Sunday morning sessions. It is this honest and open approach that encourages awareness of speeding issues early in life which evolves into consideration for pedestrians other road-users as our younger participants grow up.

PARISH CLERKS CLIPPINGS
1. At the Annual Meeting of the Parish Council, Cllr Jenny Newman was elected as Chairman for the coming year. Cllr Stuart Hinson was elected Vice-Chairman.
2. The Village is now the owner of the Redhills Playing Field. It is now a community asset; it is yours. Now look after it.
3. The road safety work has now started in the Village. I look forward to it's completion.
BARN DANCE
The tickets are now available for the Barn Dance on 7th July at Cliffansty Farm, Clevancy. Dancing will be to WILTSHIRE KLOF and they have a “caller” so there should be no problems with the steps. Tickets are available from C & M Green on 731511.
LITTLE GIG - 15th June 2012 / BIG GIG – 1st Sept 2012
This year’s Little Gig will be on Friday the 15th June, 19:30 onwards in the garden of The Crown, Broad Hinton and as always is free entry. We will be erecting the stage cover and have four top artists in the form of Ali Finneran, The Bataleurs, Theo Altieri and The Vooz, covering a variety of genres from folk to indie. The Crown will be laying on a hog roast and hopefully have some guest ale, so with the weather beginning to turn towards summer, round up your friends and family for a great night of music, food and fun, al fresco. We have negotiated a shuttle service with Bradies Taxis that will, if numbers demand, leave the Village Hall car park at 19:30 and return circa 23:00 for the paltry sum of £2.50 per person. If you want to take advantage of this offer, it is ESSENTIAL that you book your seats with Andrew on 731472 or email secretary@broadtownshow.co.uk, by 8th June.
It will be a busy weekend for us, as the next day (Saturday 16th June) we will be providing PA services to the School Fete and exhibiting all the competition entries from Broad Town School for judging – the prize is for the design to be incorporated into the cover of our Big Gig programme for 2012. Big Gig tickets will be available for purchase, so come and make sure you get yours early as, like last year, we intend to sell out! And please come over and chat about anything you’d like to see at the Big Gig – we can’t promise to deliver your ideas, but we do promise to listen.
We have made great progress for the Big Gig and lots of exciting news on bands and entertainment, but we’ll keep you in suspense for another month!

BROAD TOWN COMMUNITY LED PLANNING (CLP) GROUP
“This whole issue is desperately important for the village” – a stirring quote from Mike Broomfield, our Community Representative on the Royal Wotton Bassett and Cricklade Area Neighbourhood Planning Steering Group (RWB&CNPG) made at our own CLP Group meeting held at the Village Hall on April 27th. Mike told us about the latest RWB&CNPG meeting: “Matters have progressed enormously as follows:
* We have a new chairman Steve Bucknell from Royal Wootton Bassett Town Council and a clear path forward;
* It looks like the Neighbourhood Plan will be like the chapters of a book, broken down into separate sections that are specifically for smaller parishes like ours;
* A project management team from “Common Places” has been appointed;
* Initial funding of £20,000 for the whole area is nowhere near enough, £250,000 would be closer;
* Sub committees will establish a realistic budget and identify sources of funding;
* Terms of Reference have been agreed that allow representatives from groups like ours and Parish Councils to refer back to their groups/Councils for a vote;
* Our Broad Town CLP Group exists as the community feedback, our authority is based on the Parish Council’s participation;
*The next RWB&CNPG meeting is on 22nd May.”
Our CLP Group also considered a proposal by the Parish Council for a Housing Needs Survey for Broad Town and hopefully will discuss footpath maintenance and Redhills playground next time.
We are the only community group that brings information direct to your door about this Neighbourhood Plan project that will focus on “Development and Land Use” and there will be a section on Broad Town – please support us. Our next meeting will be at the Village Hall on Friday 22nd June at 8.30 p.m. to 9.30 p.m., everyone is welcome to join in, just listen, or join us for a drink at the Social Club bar – and if you simply want to be kept in touch on the circulation list, drop Mike a line on michaelbroomfield@btinternet.com.
ROYAL WOOTTON BASSETT & DISTRICT ROTARY CLUB
Royal Wootton Bassett & District Rotary Club has just made donations totalling £5,600.00 to four good causes.
£500.00 to Prospect Hospice
£2,000.00 to the Thamesdown Hydrotherapy Pool
£2,000.00 to the Life Education Centre (a mobile educational unit visiting Schools in the area)
£600.00 to Calabash Trust (A small South African Charitable Trust aiming to feed and educate children in Townships near Port Elizabeth)
£500.00 to Help for Heroes and Lords Taveners in support of a small party of mature people who walked from Lands End to John’o’Groats for these causes
This funding has come from the proceeds of a Christmas Charity Shop in Wootton Bassett, Christmas Sleigh Street collections and a recently held Metal Detecting Rally in Lydiard Tregoze which together raised over £11,000.00. Further donations from its Charity Fund will be made shortly.

WHAT IS THE WEATHER DOING TO OUR SMALL CREATURES?
It would be normal at this time of year to say: “Goodbye Rats and Mice and hello Wasps, Bees, ants and flies.” However, whilst all of the afore mentioned insects are now starting to get hold, Rats and Mice seem to be clinging on to the comfort of our homes, gardens and outbuildings!
Here at Clearzone, we take a less normal approach to pest control, in that we don’t just eradicate your pests. Our approach is very consultative, not only leading to solving your problem today, but helping you to understand what has caused the problem in the first place, to reduce the risk of a re-infestation.
Things to be mindful of at the moment are Wasps and Bees that are busy nest building. Of the two, Wasps cause more of a threat because of their more aggressive nature. Far more effective to treat these early in the season, before new Queens are produced, to become your problem next year. Also, be mindful that nests can hold up to 20,000 insects – not pleasant if they take a dislike to you, your children or animals.
Squirrels and moles are also very active at the moment due to their breeding cycle. The damage a mole causes is obvious. However, once in the fabric of a building (usually lofts), Squirrels gnaw their way through communication and electric cables and even water pipes. We usually find out when it’s too late!

THE GUILD OF WILTSHIRE ARTISTS
Run workshops at the Village Hall on every third Saturday of the month from 10am to 4pm. All are welcome including painters who are beginners.
Tea and Coffee provided but do bring a packed lunch.
