REVEREND ALISON WAY
As I write we are in the lull between all things ‘Olympic Games’ and all things ‘Paralympic Games’ this summer. Yesterday at the closing ceremony of the former, Lord Coe reflected on the "spirit of generosity" demonstrated by British people during the London 2012 Olympics.
We have a history where generosity of spirit has served this nation well, when we get in touch with it. This notion has its roots firmly in our Christian heritage. To be generous is a gift of our hearts. In the Bible, St Paul linked generosity with spiritual benefits: in essence the more we give, the more we benefit. In many ways these Olympic events have reminded us of something that deep down we already know. When we give generously of what we have, work together for common good and the best we can do together, amazing things can happen. By the time you are reading this thought in this village newsletter, it is my hope that the ‘Paralympic Games’ will also be demonstrating the importance of the spirit of generosity again. This time I suspect it will be in a different fresh, vibrant and moving way too. The spirit of generosity transforms things from the inside out!
On another note – we have our next Children’s Workshop – entitled ‘Who put the colours in the rainbow?’ in Hilmarton Church Hall on Saturday 29th September 2012 at 10am for key stage one and key stage two children and their parents. Lots of fun is guaranteed as we explore the story of Noah’s ark creatively.
Do let me know if you are going to attend so we can have enough materials for all!
With love in Christ, Alison Way, Rector, Benefice of Woodhill.

FAREWELL
It is with deep regret that we say “Farewell” to an ex- member of the village.
John Little recently passed away aged 73yrs. For the last few years he had resided in Wroughton with his wife. He used to milk cows on various farms in his working life and he also worked for the Milk Marketing Board as an Artificial Inseminator.
He leaves behind a wife and family.
BIG GIG – 1st Sept 2012
Hopefully you will receive this just before the Big Gig (if not, wasn’t it good)! Josh Kumra is now confirmed and will be appearing with his band as part of his upcoming tour. We have a huge variety in musical genres this year, from a full scale Big Band (the B.J. Big Band) playing classic swing numbers, to the gentle folk of Itchy Feet, top solo artists such as Ali Finneran, Theo Altieri and Danny McEvoy (check him out on YouTube), contemporary folk-rock from Bateleurs, electro-rock from Atari Pilot, the smooth groove of Kolakoka, the driving sounds of the refreshed line-up in Teddy White, the full on blow your socks off indie of Young Blood, an electro-pop artist by name of Queen of Hearts (who is appearing at a London Olympics event in Hyde Park) and the world’s leading tribute to Coldplay, Coldplace. Plus we have Miss Swindon declaring the Big Gig open at around 4pm, so get along early and get the most out of your money.
To fit all this in, gates will be opening at 15:15 this year, so get along early so you don’t miss out. We also have the fairground and Kaya Drums providing sessions in their tepee, food outlets serving BBQ, Curries, Crepes, tea, coffee and cakes and of course the well stocked bar serving real ales and other traditional alcoholic and soft drinks.
Your best option for tickets at this late stage is to ring James on 731108 to purchase tickets.
If anyone has spare union jack flags they can donate / lend, please drop them off at the field – we want to keep the Jubilee and Olympic spirit going for just one more day!

BROAD TOWN WI
14 intrepid members + 2 dogs, of the Broad Town WI enjoyed an evening walk around Malmesbury on Wednesday 15th August; despite the earlier torrential rain, the evening proved to be warm & sunny as we set off from the Abbey following a route along the river and around this picturesque town.
As well as organising the walk, Kate Orton pointed out scenes of interest along the way – The walk would be perfect for a summers evening and although flat, much of it was through fields and flood plain, providing a challenge to us all in keeping our feet dry! Afterwards we all retired to a local pub for some delicious food and refreshing drinks.
Our September meeting takes place on Wednesday 19th September @ 7.30pm when Jane Clements a local artist/historian will give a talk on traditional canal art.
If you are not a member but fancy popping along we would love to see you. Any enquiries to Rosie Law (731472)
Look out for the WI tea tent at the Big Gig on 1st September, pay us a visit & find out what else we get up to!
THE FOUR WAYS – Broad Town's Community Pub – ALL WELCOME!
On Friday 7th August, it was revealed that out of the 77 replies to the Social Club's Jubilee survey, the winning name for the Community Pub in Broad Town village hall was The Four Ways. If you picked the winner, you can still redeem your green ticket for another free drink on any Friday evening until the end of September.
The most requested future activities turned out to be showing significant Football and Rugby fixtures LIVE on the big screen; and there were a healthy number of requests for skittle evenings and karaoke. All of these will be forthcoming over the next few months.
We welcomed a new member to the committee in August: Cotmarsh resident Kevin Howard. Cheers, Kev!
PLEASE NOTE: Friday 31st August and Sunday 2nd September – we are CLOSED because we'll be preparing for/recovering from The Broad Town Big Gig. Otherwise, it's business as usual: Bar open 8pm-late every Friday, and Bingo every Sunday: eyes down 8pm; last ball 10pm – cash prizes of £2-£6 a line and £6-£15 for the house depending on the game; stakes start at £1. Play Your Cards Right and Snowball game prizes regularly top £50! Feeling lucky?
Friday 21st September – cider evening
Unfortunately, since 2012 has been such a bad year for home-grown fruit generally – and apples/pears in particular – our original plan to make enough cider for all attendees to take their own demi-john away to ferment and be ready by Christmas may have to be shelved until next year.
If this is the case, then the evening will instead consist of a 30-minute demonstration of cider-making beginning at 8.30, followed by a tasting session of at least ten varieties of both home-made and commercial premium and single-varietal ciders and perrys. Either way, there will be a nominal charge of £3 per head to cover.
If you'd like to attend, please let us know at least a week beforehand so we know how much cider to bring!
Can't wait for the monthly parish newsletter to find out what's happening? You can ring Matt on 07890 097915, contact us by email at fourwaysbroadtown@gmail.com ; the Four Ways page on www.broad-town.co.uk will go live in September, and Facebook users can now get all our latest info and chat with friends and neighbours on our wall by clicking 'Like' on our page at www.facebook.com/FourWaysBroadTown
FEEDING OUR WILD BIRDS.
While we fully support the feeding of wild birds we are finding a considerable number of small green plastic nets, which originally contained fat balls, deposited on our fields. They can be a danger to livestock if eaten by them and it would help if the empty nets could be collected up before the birds carry them off and drop them on the fields.
BROAD TOWN COMMUNITY LED PLANNING (CLP) GROUP
Remember us? Ours is the group of residents of Broad Town that gets together to hear from our Representative on the Royal Wootton Bassett and Cricklade Neighbourhood Plan Steering Group about the progress of the proposed Area Neighbourhood Plan.
We have had a break from our meetings over the summer but we are looking forward to hearing about any new developments at our next meeting, to be held at the Village Hall on Friday 28th September 8.15 p.m. to 9.15 p.m. As always our thanks go to the Social Club for letting us share the Hall with them.
Please do feel welcome to join us and find out about what the future plans for our village might be. In the meantime you can see notes from our past meetings on the Forum page on www.broad-town.co.uk, a big thank you goes to Richard Howells for setting this up for us.
Members of the public are also welcome to attend the next Area Neighbourhood Plan meeting to be held on Wednesday 5th September at Purton Village Hall starting at 6.30 p.m.
Contact Mike at Michaelbroomfield@btinternet.com if you would like to be on our mailing list or have any queries about our Group.

Films confirmed:
Saturday 15th September THE BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL Comedy-Drama (12A) 100 mins Cinema release 24 February DVD release date 25 June
John Madden’s comedy-drama follows a group of British retirees who decide to "outsource" their retirement to less expensive and seemingly exotic India. Enticed by advertisements for the newly restored Marigold Hotel and bolstered with visions of a life of leisure, they arrive to find the palace a shell of its former self. Though the new environment is less luxurious than imagined, they are transformed by their shared experiences, discovering that life and love can begin again when you let go of the past. A dream Moviola cast: Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, Bill Nighy, Penelope Wilton, Tom Wilkinson and Slumdog Millionaire’s Dev Patel. As memorable as a Chinese meal but every mouthful delicious. This is a film which people will want to see again. Potentially one of the biggest hits we will ever have?
Saturday 20th October SALMON FISHING IN THE YEMEN Comedy-Drama (12A) 107mins Cinema release 20 April, DVD release 3 September
Adapted from Paul Torday’s hit novel (much featured on Radio 4) by Simon Beaufoy. Directed by the excellent Lasse Hallstrom and with a dream cast including Kristin Scott-Thomas, Ewan McGregor and Emily Blunt. “Stuffy government fisheries scientist Fred is asked by a fishing-obsessed Arab Sheik to do the seemingly impossible - introduce British salmon to the Wadis of the Yemen. Despite considerable trepidation, Fred is finally won over by the charismatic Arab, who reveals that fishing brings him closer to God, and he hopes it will have the same effect on his countrymen. Fred also begins to fall for the Sheik's beautiful legal representative Harriet; and so he rises to the Sheik's eccentric challenge, casting off his English reserve on a transformative journey of self discovery and late blooming love.” (imdb comment). Irresistible to Moviola audiences?
Saturday 17th November THE PIRATES – AN ADVENTURE WITH SCIENTISTS (U) 88 mins Cinema release 28 March, DVD release 10 September
Hugh Grant, Imelda Staunton (as Queen Victoria), David Tennant and a host of others voice a jolly Aardman animated film about a 19th century pirate (wanting to become ‘Pirate of the Year’) falling in with the likes of Charles Darwin on his worldwide adventures. Jolly fun and spellbinding animation from the Wallace and Gromit studio.
Some of our customers have asked for a definition of the ‘12A’ category? 'accompanied' and 'advisory'. '12A' means that anyone aged 12 or over can go and see the film unaccompanied. Children younger than 12 may see the film if they are accompanied by an adult (e.g. someone over the age of 18), who must watch the film with them.
HARVEST
Yes it is that time of year again. We have all seen the tractors with various trailers as we have gone around the lanes.
Christ Church, Broad Town will be celebrating harvest on Sunday 14th October with our usual tea from 5pm in Church. This will be followed by “Songs of Praise for Harvest” at 6pm
QUIZ NIGHT
What do you remember of the Queen's Jubilee? What do you recall of the wonderful London Olympics? These two subjects will form part of a quiz evening covering a variety of topics.
Broad Town Village Hall - Saturday 13th October 2012 - 7.30pm prompt.
Tickets £7.50 per person, light supper included. Phone 731114
Bar available. Teams of 4-6
The evening is organised by and in aid of Christ Church, Broad Town.
