REVEREND ALISON WAY

Remembering in hope and support the Swindon Foodbank this Harvest.

Our annual commemoration of the departed is planned this year for 5pm on Sunday 4th November at St Giles Tockenham. Life is obviously never quite the same after we lose someone close to us through their death, but we always carry the sense and the influence of that person forward in our hearts. In our onward journeying it can be helpful to find ways to honour, cherish and remember our lost loved ones now at peace and at rest deep in the heart of our loving heavenly Father God. This kind of remembering is just one aspect of our annual benefice-wide service for commemorating our departed, called “Remembering in Hope”. There is also an opportunity to give thanks to God for those who have been significant in our lives and have died. If you wish, there is also an opportunity at this service to light a candle in their memory. In addition if you would like to have a loved one remembered by name on this occasion, please let me have their full name by getting in touch with me at the usual phone number or e-mail address, or by writing the name clearly in the “Remembering in Hope” book, which will be available at most Church worship during October.

At our harvest festivals across the benefice churches this year, there will be an opportunity to donate food items to Swindon Foodbank. This local charity does valuable work to feed the hungry and those who fall on tough times locally, and of late they are experiencing unprecedented demand. Please bring a donation to your harvest festival. Here is their ‘shopping list’ to guide your gift. Fruit juice longlife, Milk longlife, sugar (500g), cereal, tinned rice or sponge puddings, instant mash or tinned potatoes, tinned meat, tinned tomatoes, tinned fruit, pasta sauce, biscuits, snacks and nibbles and tinned vegetables.

With love in Christ, Alison Way, Rector, Benefice of Woodhill.

CORRECTION

Last month we reported the death of John Little. His correct age was 80yrs and had lived in the village for 73yrs. We apologise to the Little family for the mistake.

FAREWELL

It is with deep regret that we have to announce the passing of Mrs Davey. She had lived in the village for about 20yrs. She passed away on the 28th Aug. aged 78yrs at home with her family round her. She had been in ill health for a while. She leaves a husband, 4 children and several grandchildren. We extend our sympathy to Roy and the family.

CHURCH COFFEE MORNING

Thank you to everyone who supported this event and helping to raise £161 for Church Funds.

QUIZ NIGHT

What do you remember of the Queen's Jubilee? What do you recall of the wonderful London Olympics? These two subjects will form part of a quiz evening covering a variety of topics.

SATURDAY 27TH OCTOBER CHEESE, WINE AND PICTURES FUNDRAISER FOR JEEL AL AMAL SCHOOL IN BETHANY, THE HOLY LAND

In June we joined friends from Wootton Bassett and a group from Frampton on Severn for a fascinating pilgrimage to the Holy Land. During the trip we visited Jeel Al Amal School which cares for needy boys in its boarding section and provides education for girls and boys in its school. We were so impressed by the care and ethos of the home and the quality of education that we felt we would like to raise money to help them with their work. Do come and enjoy cheese and wine with us and the photos, artifacts and power point presentation about both our pilgrimage and the work of the school. Saturday 27th October, 7pm for 7.30pm at Church Hall in Wootton Bassett.

Tickets cost £6.50 each and are available from Carolyn 852754 until 16th October and from the Church Croft in Wootton Bassett.

BIG GIG

2012 was yet another fantastic Big Gig; the weather held, we had a record crowd and the new bigger stage layout looked brilliant. We feel for any of you that were unable to attend as we had reached our capacity, but we do always release tickets to the village before they go on general sale – please buy early in future to avoid disappointment!

We will be making donations to Wiltshire Air Ambulance and Goldenhar charities in the near future and there will be, as always, a good pot of money for village institutions. Please contact any of the committee or email biggig@broadtownshow.co.uk should your organisation require financial assistance, by the 21st October 2012. Please ensure you give a full description of the purpose of the request, including the benefit(s) to the village.

On top of these donations, the Social Club, W.I., Pre-School and Rotary all raised funds for themselves through their hard work on the night.

We could not put on such a great event without the financial, physical and emotional support of our sponsors, our friends and people from the village, so no apologies for a word of thanks to: Ray and Maybell Bourton for use of the land, the excellent bar provided by Broad Town Social Club, delicious cakes and hot beverages supplied by Broad Town W.I., the entertainment provided by Broad Town Pre-School to the young (and not so young!), everyone who helped put up the tents, prepare and clear up the site or worked on the gate, all the great bands that kept us entertained and anyone else we may have forgotten. Finally a mention and a bit of recognition for your Big Gig committee; they have yet again worked tirelessly over the last 10 months to create a music festival that is now acknowledged as one of the best in the area: Keith Newman, Richard Wylie, James Harvey-Samuel, Andrew Law, Matt Nailon, Ed Newman, Matt Parry and Graham Wallis (the latter two are definitely leaving the committee this year – thank you Matt and Graham for all your hard work over the years). Finally, thanks to our long-suffering partners.

Finally, a date for your diary: Broad Town Show AGM will be held on Friday, November 23rd at 7:30pm in the Village Hall. We may have further resignations from the committee, so it’s important we have new blood to carry on the excellent work. Some of you did express keen interest at the Big Gig, but that may have been the emotion of the moment (or the beer)! If you want to be part of the Big Gig and have a few hours to spare each month, please come along and join us – your village needs you!

DOG SHOW

The Dog Show was a resounding success, raising £600 for The Blue Cross. Of course none of this would be possible without your enduring support.

Special thanks to the organisers and volunteers especially to Carol, Nova, Ray, Jess, Mandy and Mike for organising and making the day so enjoyable

Babs for judging the classes and Breach Lane agility team for the agility course

Ray Bourton and the Big Gig Committee for kindly lending the venue and facilities

The Four Ways - Broad Town's Community Pub - for the donation of some cold cans of pop for those thirsty dog owners!

A very big THANK YOU TO ALL

BROAD TOWN WI

Last month our talk was entitled ‘Castles and Roses’ which puzzled some of our members. It was, of course, all about canal art and the wonderful floral patterns and castle designs that can be seen painted on the outsides and decorating the interiors of narrow boats.

Jane Clements, from Swindon gave us a very interesting talk about the origins of this colourful artwork and the ‘painters’ whose job it was to decorate boats and furniture. Little is known about how it all started or who the painters were as most work is unsigned. Why castles are so prominent is also a mystery although there are many theories.

As she talked, Jane gave us a demonstration of how she paints using the very unique brushes and paints. She had prepared a series of panels and was able to show us, stage by stage how to arrive at a beautiful and very colourful panel covered in pink and yellow roses and green veined foliage.

Jane had a lovely display of her work and we were able to buy hand painted cards, key rings, lanterns, candleholders and many other items.

This month, our speaker will be Richard Broadhead and will be entitled ‘Soldiers of the Great War’. It is the story of some of the soldiers remembered on our local war memorials. Members are invited to bring a partner or friend to this meeting. We are a friendly group and welcome new members, so why not give us a try. Our next meeting is at 7.30pm on Wednesday 17th October, at Broad Town village hall.

THE FOUR WAYS – Broad Town's Community Pub – ALL WELCOME!

Bar open 8pm-late every Friday, and Bingo every Sunday 8pm in the village hall. ALL WELCOME!

A humongous thank-you to Lee, Nicola, Judy, Stewie, Moles Brewery and everyone else who helped keep the drinks flowing at the Big Gig. We'll try to make sure it's a little less intimate behind the bar next time, weather forecast permitting…

Want to have your say in the running of the Community Pub? Come along to the Social Club's AGM at 8pm on Friday 12th October and make your opinion count. Prospective committee members and event organisers always needed – come along any Friday or Sunday.

BROAD TOWN HALLOWE'EN BASH – Friday 26th October

£2 adults, £1 children – fancy dress to horrify! Prizes galore for under 16s 'best costume' and 'best pumpkin'. Creeeepy atmosphere and spoooooky tunes provided by those groooovy guys 'n' ghooouuuls at www.soundcitydiscos.co.uk who did such an ace job last year.

Bingowe'd like to increase the current cash prizes of £2-£6 a line and £6-£15 for the house soon, and offer more raffle items and other games too. We can look forward to doing this when we have a larger number of players. Never played before? Not from Broad Town? Doesn't matter: come and have a go: the more the merrier!

ADVANCE NOTICE: buy your numbers ASAP any time we're open: the Christmas draw will take place at the Christmas Bingo session on SATURDAY 22nd December.

PARISH CLERK'S CLIPPINGS

1. There is funding available for the development of sports facilities or play areas, but it needs a dedicated group of people to take it forward. There will be plenty of advice around as several local villages are taking advantage of it. If you are interested please contact a local Parish Councillor.

2. Parking on Horns and Chapel Lanes. Poor parking is making passing difficult. Please park prettily.

3. Traffic speed and parking in Redhills. Inappropriate speed of traffic in the cul-de-sac and inconsiderate parking in the turning circle at the top is also causing problems. Please think about the consequences of your actions.

4. Bonfires on sunny afternoons are an abomination. Please be more considerate.

5. If you want an item put before the Parish Council for discussion please let the Clerk have written notice of the problem 7 days before the next meeting. That way any information required to answer your query will be available.

BROAD TOWN COMMUNITY SPEED WATCH

As a direct result of data provided by your local CSW team, police traffic officers have continued to operate in Broad Town throughout August and September, making stops and imposing fines, penalty points and court appearances upon inconsiderate drivers.

Broad Town's CSW initiative has been in place for over a year now, and will be conducting its 300th session in October. We are proud to welcome four new fully vetted and police-trained volunteers in September to continue our efforts as a small part of a well-defined, properly funded and centrally organised campaign comprising of over 50 teams staffed by 360+ volunteers monitoring around 150 locations county-wide, all committed to making Wiltshire a more pleasant and safe place for drivers and pedestrians alike.

Want to find out about Speed Watch? Parishioners of all ages are always welcome to drop in on one of our three locations (Christ Church, Post Box or Manor Farm) any Sunday 1100-1200. More info from Matthew on 731499 or email oscar.littlelad@gmail.com Thank You For Travelling At Thirty!

NEW WHITE HORSE INFORMATION BOARD AT THE SCHOOL

We had the children design the new draft and then chose elements to go on the final work. I think it makes a colourful representation of what we wanted to get across. The elements mentioning Simmond's are available on our history web site. All pictures and illustrations are expandable - just click on them to bring them up. BROAD TOWN HISTORY & ARCHAEOLOGY PROJECT

Saturday, 24th November 2012 at Broad Town Village Hall - Open from 19:00 - Talk starts 19:30. Free presentation (although donations always welcome) covering the last 10 years of archaeological work in the area - everything from the end of the last Ice Age to Saxon executions and beyond - followed by a launch of the final year of work.

Come along and see how you can get involved in the last chapter of the villages history.

This project was latterly supported by the University of Bath, Swindon College and QinetiQ Archaeology. We now have a Heritage Lottery Fund grant application in and will be announcing whether they are funding our final year at this session.

NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN – BROAD TOWN

The next few months will see the first stages of the consultation and public engagement parts of a Neighbourhood Plan involving Broad Town and the surrounding areas.

The plan is about giving an opportunity for local people to be involved in land use (planning) issues within their area. The types of issues include housing, roads and development. It will be a powerful plan which directly links into Wiltshire Council Planning Policies which are being prepared at the moment.

The Neighbourhood Plan, being led by a partnership of Parish Councils, Town Councils and Community Led Planning groups is working very closely with local groups, such as those in Broad Town, to ensure that the important issues in that area are highlighted and given prominence within the plan.

Issues that have already been highlighted, such as those in the Broad Town Parish Plan, will be developed further within upcoming events, due to take place from November.

MOVIEOLA HILMARTON CHURCH HALL 7pm FOR 7.30pm

Tickets will be available from Hilmarton Post Office, Poynder Place or call The Box office 01249 760312. Tickets still only £5

Film confirmed:

Saturday 17th November THE PIRATES – AN ADVENTURE WITH SCIENTISTS (U) 88 mins Cinema release 28 March, DVD release 10 September

Hugh Grant, Imelda Staunton (as Queen Victoria), David Tennant and a host of others voice a jolly Aardman animated film about a 19th century pirate (wanting to become ‘Pirate of the Year’) falling in with the likes of Charles Darwin on his worldwide adventures. Jolly fun and spellbinding animation from the Wallace and Gromit studio.

Some of our customers have asked for a definition of the ‘12A’ category? 'accompanied' and 'advisory'. '12A' means that anyone aged 12 or over can go and see the film unaccompanied. Children younger than 12 may see the film if they are accompanied by an adult (e.g. someone over the age of 18), who must watch the film with them.
