REVEREND ALISON WAY
This month Lent begins on Ash Wednesday – 13th February 2013. That day we have a powerful penitential service of Holy Communion, this year at 7:30pm in Christchurch Broad Town. May we commend this to you as an excellent way to start Lent and to wipe the slate clean with our forgiving, abiding and loving God.
Lent in the history of our Christian heritage is a time self-examination, penitence, self-denial, study, and preparation for Easter, to which almsgiving has traditionally been added. The whole Christian community was invited to participate in study and repentance, the extension of which over forty days would remind them of the forty days that Jesus spent in the wilderness, being tested by Satan.
These days, if we are not careful and circumspect about it, Lent can be hijacked by being more of an excuse to give up something that is bad for us or to embark on a get fitter campaign. Whatever we set out to do as our Lenten discipline, just make sure it takes us back to the roots of this tradition, and let it be something that gets us closer to God. In the benefice this year we will be marking Lent on Sundays with a round of Book of Common Prayer communions and Candlelit Complines (one in each Church), as well as our more usual all-age/family services as well – see the grid below in this newsletter and the next for details. We will also be praying together each week in someone’s home and if you would like to be part of that please do get in touch with me for the schedule, which is in preparation at the moment. Our focus for our worship this Lent will be the Lord’s prayer, which our Saviour Jesus Christ left for us and brings into sharp focus God’s overwhelming love for us.
Just a note for your diaries for next month, we are very excited that the new Archdeacon of Wilts, The Reverend Ruth Worsley is joining us for worship in the benefice on Mothering Sunday (March 10th) – that day our family friendly worship will be at 9:15am in Christchurch, Broad Town and 11am in St Laurence’s Church, Hilmarton. Do make every effort to attend and take this opportunity to welcome Ruth to our communities in her new role.

CHURCH ELECTORAL ROLL
Every year the church electoral roll is revised and amended, every sixth year a new roll has to be prepared. 2013 is the 6th year, the year for a new roll to be prepared. All those on the current roll will be contacted and provided with new application forms. Anyone not on the roll and who would wish to be can contact the Electoral Roll Officer (Rosemary McLaren Tel: 731526) who will be happy to deliver an application form.
Being on the Electoral Roll entitles you to attend and participate at the annual PCC (this year the beginning of April) and for election to the PCC. It is also used to determine eligibility for election to deanery, diocesan and general synod. Also the numbers on the rolls are used in the calculation of the number of representatives who may be elected to each of the synods. Currently Christ Church has 42 names on its Roll.
To be included on the Roll these are the main requirements - a person must be baptised and over 16 years old, a member of the Church of England, resident in the parish or resident
in another parish and attending their chosen parish for at least 6 months. If you need further information/guidance please contact the Electoral roll Officer, any member of the PCC or the Vicar.
PANCAKES! COFFEE MORNING
Pancakes will be served as well as homemade cakes. In the village Church on SATURDAY 9th FEBRUARY 10.00am – 12 noon.
Everyone welcome. If you have not been to one of our coffee mornings before why not come and visit our friendly ‘cafe’.
SAFARI SUPPER
The PCC hope to organise another Safari Supper in the village following the success of the one we held in 2011.
Are you interested in participating? Would you be willing to act as a host – ideally we would try to ensure you weren’t responsible for the same course if you acted as a host previously.
Finding a convenient date is not easy when so many people are involved but maybe a Saturday in late Spring or early September could be arranged. NEW-V NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN CONSULTATIONS FOR BROAD TOWN - COMING SOON
Here are some answers to questions you might be asking:
“What is the purpose of these consultations? Why should I come along?” The main objective of these consultations is to hear your views, get your feedback and provide everyone with an opportunity for influencing and impacting the future of Broad Town
“What is different about this Neighbourhood plan to the other plans we’ve seen?” The Neighbourhood Plan is very much about land use and is supported by both the government and legislation. Being part of the Neighbourhood Plan gives us the opportunity to guide planning in our own village. The Parish Plan (issued July 2010) is about a much wider set of issues and is predominately a set of aspirations for the next five to ten years
“Who is paying for the Neighbourhood Plan?” The Plan is being funded, as part of a Frontrunner scheme, by the government. This is great news for Broad Town residents because, unlike other Parishes, the cost of producing the plan has had no impact on our precept and therefore no impact on your pocket. Furthermore, Common Places have been employed due to their expertise in this area and this will ensure Broad Town has an effective Plan produced by an independent, objective organisation
What do I need to do next? Common Places strongly urge you to come along to the consultation events to share your views. But if you cannot attend either event (Saturday 2nd 10am – 3pm and Wednesday 6th February 7pm – 9pm) you can still have your say: go to www.new-v.co.uk/broadtown and post your comments. BROAD TOWN WI
Our January meeting was entitled ‘Resolutions and Puddings’. Not so good for those who had given up desserts as their New Year Resolution! After our business meeting we all tucked into a wonderful spread provided by our committee. There was an amazing cheese board, fruit salad, chocolate brownies, tiramisu and lemon and ginger cheesecake. We then debated which of the two shortlisted resolutions we wished to support at the WI conference this year. These are ‘The decline of our high streets and town centres’ and ‘Resolving to keep our young people suicide-safe online’. Both resolutions were presented and discussed and the voting slips completed and posted.
Our next meeting will be held on Wednesday 20th February at 7.30pm at Broad Town village hall. Our speaker will be Al Sylvester who will be telling us about his ‘Journey to the South Pole’. Al has a very exciting life. When I asked if he could speak to us last spring he was about to embark on an attempt to climb Everest with a group of injured servicemen!
WI Members are welcome to bring a guest. Refreshments are provided and we just ask for a donation of £3. There will be a box available.
On Saturday 23rd February, the WI will be hosting a choir workshop- (see separate sheet for details)
Interested in joining the WI? We are a friendly group and are looking for new members. Come and try us out; your first meeting is free. We have a varied programme including interesting speakers, more active sessions (beginners line-dancing in July), outings and meals. We meet on the third Wednesday of the month at the village hall. Parking is available. We have some members from Wootton Bassett, since the Bassett branch closed. BROAD TOWN NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH (NHW)
The last quarter has been quiet for Broad Town with little to report. The NHW was, however, able to help the Police by providing information which potentially related to the theft of garden machinery.
Jo Wylie has recently left the village and has relinquished her post as scheme coordinator for Redhills; many thanks to Jo for all her efforts. There is now a vacancy for this post and any volunteers should contact Andrew Law. The task is not onerous and is essentially that of providing a hub for the transmission of information to and from Redhills members.
Carol Robbins has kindly agreed to take on the coordination of the NHW Scheme which covers properties along the Broad Town Road north of the village. Scheme members can now expect to see information arriving via this source. Thank you Carol.
Andrew Law attended the quarterly Police Neighbourhood Tasking Group in Wootton Bassett at which local groups are represented and at which police results and police priorities are discussed and confirmed. PC Steve Porter provided statistics relating to the success of police speed checks and talked about his visit to talk to school children in the Village School, he stated that it was his intention to roll over speeding as his priority for the forthcoming quarter. One point was raised regarding the parking of vehicles on pavements which prevents the passage of pedestrians.
The Parish is divided into 8 schemes which are independently run under the area coordination of Andrew Law. Anyone who is not a member of a scheme and wishes to become one is requested to contact Andrew Law. andrewlaw456@gmail.com 01793 731472.
BROAD TOWN COMMUNITY LED PLANNING (CLP) GROUP
The planned consultation events seeking your views on the future of our village are almost upon us! We hope that as many of you as possible will be able to come along to the Village Hall on Saturday February 2nd 10am until 3pm (drop in any time) and Wednesday February 6th 7pm to 9pm (Question/Answer session) to give your views on land use and development and hear about the outcome. Broad Town has applied to join with six other villages to form a Neighbourhood Plan for the whole area and your opinions will become part of this overall Plan. The Plan will then be included within Wiltshire Council planning policy once the process is complete. The other villages are going to have similar consultation events so that voices across the whole area can be heard. Please make sure that your voice is one of them! Please join in the consultation events.
If you are interested in the details of the Neighbourhood Plan process the Project Managers have set up a website www.new-v.co.uk. Additionally we have a Community Forum site on www.broad-town.co.uk. Everyone is very welcome to come along to our next CLP Group meeting on Friday 15th February 8.15pm to 9.15pm at the Village Hall.

PARISH CLERKS CLIPPINGS
1. Anonymous. I wouldn't normally bother to answer an anonymous comment (in the last edition of the 'News') - either stand up and be counted, and come to our meetings, or let us know personally. However, you are obviously sufficiently interested in footpaths to be the person I have been asking for for many months to lead a group to look after our rights of way.
2. The neighbourhood plan consultation is now in progress. An open day will be held in the Village Hall on Saturday 2nd February from 10am to 3pm where a presentation will be on show, laid on by Common Places, consultants for the area Neighbourhood Plan. This will be followed by a meeting on Wednesday 6th February from 7pm to 9pm to discuss the comments. This is looking at the future of this village, and the neighbourhood: if you are interested in your future environment, be there.
3. The RWB and Cricklade Good Neighbours Scheme is there to help our senior citizens remain in their homes. See the contact details on the notice boards, or contact the Parish Clerk.
4. I know that some households in the northern end of the Village have not yet received their updated Village Information Leaflets. This omission is entirely my fault, and will be corrected shortly.

An application has been made by Purton Parish Council for the designation as one neighbourhood area of all of the following councils, Purton, Lydiard Millicent, Lydiard Tregoze, Broad Town, Clyffe Pypard, Tockenham, and Lyneham parishes . BROAD TOWN COMMUNITY SPEED WATCH
Recent inclement weather has hampered the team's activities in the last few weeks, but sessions continue as and when possible. BROAD TOWN ARCHAEOLOGICAL & HISTORY PROJECT: MEMORY COLLECTION EVENT
Sunday, 3rd March from 1pm- 5pm, Broad Town Village Hall
After the successful update session held with a backdrop of severe flooding in the area and the encouraging discussions held around plates of cakes and cups of tea, we have decided to crack on with the project and seek funding from other local sources. The first session is a memory collection event.
We would like you to look out your family pictures and bring them along to this event. We are not after any 'David Bailey' quality shots, more just ones of people and events in the village, they don't have to be good quality - we are interested in everything. So if you have pictures of the village show, in the pub, school, church, chapel, post office or even your garden - we would love to see them. This includes pictures taken last year - it all adds to the effort.
There will also be a number of displays covering varied subjects connected with the village. Who remembers the original Village Show? We will have a display covering the once annual event, if you have any pictures taken at the show please bring them along. There will be a deeds workshop looking at how your house deeds can complement the current village record. A display of WWII artefacts connected with the home front – lookout your Home Guard/Land Army and wartime photos. There will also be the first outing of our history collection map. More details of how you could help us with this will be circulated at this session.
Pop in any time on Sunday 3rd March between 1-5pm for a chat and cup of tea (and possibly cake) and don’t forget bring your memories and photos.

BROAD TOWN WHITE HORSE
Dates for your diary. We are intending holding 2 consecutive cleaning and liming mornings on 13th – 14th April. The reason for this extended session is two-fold. As you will be aware all our attempts to clean the hill figure last year were frustrated because of the weather. Subsequently the horse is now in a bit of a state and we estimate it will take a full day to recover. Rather than committing a full day we are offering two mornings instead – hopefully this means more people will be able to help as last time only five people could make it. Saturday will be concerned with weeding and strimming; Sunday will finish up any work not finished the day before and then lime the horse. We do hope you will be able to help us. WILTSHIRE AIR AMBULANCE CHARITABLE TRUST
Please note the new title for the Air Ambulance as we are now an independent charitable trust, being controlled by a Wiltshire peoples committee. The cost of running the air ambulance is well into £1million this year. Please remember that the charity is not funded by Government and all monies have to be “found” from donations.

THE HISTORICAL SOCIETY OF ROYAL WOOTTON BASSETT
‘Looking Forward to the Past’
The Historical Society of Royal Wootton Bassett exists to educate and entertain its members through an annual programme of talks and visits. Topics are varied, encompassing both local and national subjects. Membership is £10 per annum or £2 per visit. You will be made most welcome. Meetings are held on the second Thursday of the month from 7:30pm in the Civic Centre, Station Road, Royal Wootton Bassett.

BIG GIG 2014
After the 2012 event’s rollicking success, the usual outdoor event on the show field will triumphantly return even bigger and better in 2014. Music fans will still be able to get their groove on, though: there will be at least one Broad Town Little Gig 2013 taking place during the summer at a local venue – watch this space and our website www.broadtownshow.co.uk for more details!

ANIMAL CARE AT YOUR OWN PROPERTY
I am mature, flexible, and experienced in caring for animals of all types. I have my own horses, dogs, chickens and cat, and have cared for sheep, wild boar, and a variety of small pets over the years. I live in Broad Town and I can offer help with animals in the local area. Be it caring for your horse while you have a weekend away, feeding your parrot for a week, walking your dog or taking hay to your sheep, I can do it.
