REVEREND ALISON WAY

clip_image002This month we continue our journey through Lent and then through Holy Week culminating in the great festival of Easter. We pause for refreshment in this journey for Mothering Sunday, March 10th, when the new Archdeacon of Wilts, the Venerable Ruth Worsley, will be with us for family friendly worship at 9:15am in Broad town and 11am in Hilmarton

Then we move into the more serious business and busyness of Holy Week. To really understand how God loves us, travel through this week with us.

  • On Palm Sunday (24th March) we will recognize how Jesus entered into Jerusalem, hailed by the crowds, and listen again to his story of passion for the world. At this service, we will reflect on the phrase ‘on earth as it is in heaven’ (Palm Sunday Communion with Passion Gospel and Palm Procession at Clyffe Pypard at 10:30am).
  • On Maundy Thursday (28th March) we have a powerful and intimate encounter with Jesus as we remember his last supper with his disciples. At this service, we will reflect on the phrase ‘Give us this day our daily bread’ (Maundy Thursday Communion at Hilmarton at 7:30pm).
  • On Good Friday (29th March), in the morning there will be a children’s work shop in St Giles Church, Tockenham starting at 10am. Please do let me know if your key stage one or two children (and yourselves) are coming to this so we have sufficient resources for all. This is followed by family worship for Good Friday, particularly suitable for all ages at 11am in that Church. (Family Service at Tockenham at 11:00am)
  • On Good Friday afternoon (29th March) there will a service of music and meditation on the cross for adults concentrating on the phrase – ‘And deliver us from evil’. (Music and Meditation for Good Friday at Broad Town at 1:30pm)
  • And finally on Easter day (31st March) there is a service in each Church of the benefice (details on the service list above). Join us to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ, dwelling on the phrase ‘For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, forever and ever, amen.’ Do remember that this is the day that the clocks go forward too!

With love in Christ, Alison Way Rector, Benefice of Woodhill, The Rectory, Wood Street, Clyffe Pypard, Wilts, SN4 7PY rectorwoodhill@gmail.com 01793 739044

GOODBYE AND THANK YOU

This month we mourn the passing of another long standing member of the community. Jerry Bastin had lived in Broad Town since 1964 with his wife and family. He had served an apprenticeship with British Rail and served his National Service in REME and as a “Para”.

He gave of his time to the community with his involvement as a well respected teacher at “the Comp” and as a coach at WB tennis club. In Broad Town he was on the BT Show Committee and helped in the construction of the present village hall. He is survived by his wife, 2 sons and their families.

Jerry's family would like to thank friends and neighbours for their thoughts at this time and for joining them in celebrating his life. Special thanks to Rev Alison for her support and for a memorable and poignant service. Thanks also to Clive Green, a true help.

BROAD TOWN WI

Our speaker this month was Warrant Officer Al Sylvester, a former team leader in RAF mountain rescue service where he was involved with stretcher rescues and rescues from crashed aircraft. Al talked to us about his amazing trek to the South Pole. He explained how the four team members were chosen from 31 applicants, following expeditions in Iceland and Norway. We also heard how nearly £200,000 was raised and how the team’s fitness was improved. Al developed his leg and back muscles for pulling his 18 stone sled by dragging two tyres and a large lump of concrete for three hours a day in all weathers.

The team were finally flown into the starting point near the Patriot Hills and left unsupported in the icy wilderness. Al described the mental challenges of the isolation, the physical challenges of living at -38 degrees with wind speeds sometimes over 100 mph and gave us a very entertaining and colourful account of the everyday routine of eating, drinking and life’s other necessary functions. Unfortunately the cold took its toll and with two team members suffering from severe frost bite the trek had to be aborted. The team did reach the South Pole by plane and were then returned home. Al does not regret his journey to the south pole despite losing the ends of his thumbs due to frostbite. He encouraged us all to step out of our comfort zone and do something amazing.

Next month, on Wednesday 20th March at 7.30pm at Broad Town Village Hall we are having a video and question & answer session by the Wiltshire Air Ambulance.

We would like some more members so why not come along.

BROAD TOWN COMMUNITY LED PLANNING (CLP) GROUP

Thank you to everyone who was able to attend the consultation events at the Village Hall at the beginning of February. Broad Town had an excellent turn out (not that we are trying to compete with the other villages in the proposed NEW Villages Area Neighbourhood Plan) and it made delivering the leaflets in the snow all worthwhile. We attend the Area Steering Group meetings on your behalf and so we can put forward your views on how the Area Neighbourhood Plan for the seven villages involved should progress. There are two points to note at the moment. The first is that the application for Broad Town to join with the other six villages in forming a Neighbourhood Area can be found on: http://consult.wiltshire.gov.uk/portal/spatial_planning/np. By the time you read this Newsletter the opportunity to comment may be closed but you will still be able to read the application and comments made by members of the public. The second point is that the consultation in Broad Town about our section of the Plan will continue by looking at the issues raised at the February events in greater detail and this part of the process is likely to go on for some months to come.

If you are interested in the details of the Neighbourhood Plan process the Project Managers have set up a website www.new-v.co.uk. Additionally we have a Community Forum site on www.broad-town.co.uk. Everyone is very welcome to come along to our next CLP Group meeting that will be held after Easter and we will publish the date in the April Newsletter.

BROAD TOWN WHITE HORSE

Dates for your diary. We are intending holding 2 consecutive cleaning and liming mornings on 13th – 14th April. The reason for this extended session is two-fold. As you will be aware all our attempts to clean the hill figure last year were frustrated because of the weather. Subsequently the horse is now in a bit of a state and we estimate it will take a full day to recover. Rather than committing a full day we are offering two mornings instead – hopefully this means more people will be able to help as last time only five people could make it. Saturday will be concerned with weeding and strimming; Sunday will finish up any work not finished the day before and then lime the horse. We do hope you will be able to help us. One or both days would be much appreciated. We would also like to thank Broad Town Parish Council for their recent generous donation. Contact Bob Clarke on 731853 for more details. More next month.

PARISH CLERKS CLIPPINGS

1. Hedges overhanging Footpaths. Please keep hedges clear of public footpaths, particularly on the main road.

2. Rights of Way. Nobody has yet responded to my call to form a group.. I have been contacted by a young lady who likes to help with keeping our footpaths clear, but is not able to do all of them. So - how about adopting a footpath near you, and keeping just that one clear.
3. On the subject of adoption - see the Notice Boards about the 'Adopt a Fire Hydrant' campaign.

4. Dog fouling is back on the agenda - particularly at Thornhill, Please clean up after your dog. The penalty for not doing so is severe.

5. Neighbourhood Planning. I will put a list of websites on the Notice Boards, for those of you who are interested.

6. Road Damage etc. Remember CLARENCE. A free phone call to make any complaints about the state of our roads.

7. Neighbourhood Plan. 60 people attended the consultation events, a gratifying number. Common Places, the consultants, held several events locally that week so their report is not yet to hand. When it arrives the PC will discuss it; plenty of time for responses.

BROAD TOWN ARCHAEOLOGICAL & HISTORY PROJECT: MEMORY COLLECTION EVENT

Sunday, 3rd March from 13:00 - 17:00, Broad Town Village Hall. After the successful update session held with a backdrop of severe flooding in the area and the encouraging discussions held around plates of cakes and cups of tea, we have decided to crack on with the project and seek funding from other local sources. The first session is a memory collection event. We would like you to look out your family pictures and bring them along to this event. We are not after any 'David Bailey' quality shots, more just ones of people and events in the village, they don't have to be good quality - we are interested in everything. So if you have pictures of the village show, in the pub, school, church, chapel, post office or even your garden - we would love to see them. This includes pictures taken last year - it all adds to the effort.

There will also be a number of displays covering varied subjects connected with the village. Who remembers the original Village Show? We will have a display covering the once annual event, if you have any pictures taken at the show please bring them along. There will be a deeds workshop looking at how your house deeds can complement the current village record. A display of WWII artefacts connected with the home front – lookout your Home Guard/Land Army and wartime photos. There will also be the first outing of our history collection map. More details of how you could help us with this will be circulated at this session.

Pop in any time on Sunday 3rd March between 1-5 pm for a chat and cup of tea (and possibly cake) and don’t forget bring your memories and photos.

For more details contact Malcolm via our email or on 01793 731567 or contact us at broadtownhistory@hotmail.co.uk Or visit the website at http://broadtownhistory.moonfruit.com

HILMARTON MOVIOLA Saturday 16th March 2013. Hilmarton Parish Church Hall 7.30 doors open at 7.00

Quartet (12A) 98 mins. “This is not a retirement home; this is a madhouse...” – Jean Horton (Maggie Smith)

Lifelong friends Wilf (Billy Connolly) and Reggie (Tom Courtenay), together with former colleague Cissy (Pauline Collins), are residents of Beecham House, a home for retired opera singers. Every year on Giuseppe Verdi's birthday, the residents unite to give a concert to raise funds for their home. But when Jean Horton (Maggie Smith), a former grande dame of the opera fallen on hard times - also Reggie's ex-wife and the fourth and most celebrated member of their former quartet - moves into the home to everyone's surprise, the plans for this year's concert start to unravel. As old grudges threaten to undermine past glories and theatrical temperaments play havoc with the rehearsal schedule, it becomes apparent that having four of the finest singers in English operatic history under one roof offers no guarantee that the show will go on. Based on Ronald Harwood's stage play of the same name, Quartet is a wickedly comic film about redefining old age and growing old with hope; demonstrating how art illuminates life and the human spirit remains undimmed even as the brightest stars start to fade. Quartet is Dustin Hoffman's directorial debut.

Tickets still only £5.00 from The Post Office, Poynder Place, Hilmarton or call the Box Office 01249 760312

LINK 6 AND RWB GOOD NEIGHBOUR SCHEME

LINK 6 and RWB Good Neighbour Scheme offers ad hoc help and support to people in need, either temporary or longer time, who live in and around Royal Wootton Bassett.

We offer our volunteers a unique opportunity to give their time on their own terms, so if you only want to offer an hour or two now and again, we would still love to hear from you.

Our clients ask us to do all sorts of things, from changing a light bulb, going with them to the hospital, going for a walk, a trip to the hairdressers, collecting a prescription, taking a pet to the vet.

We never know what is going to come up next, but what we do know is that everything we do is valued greatly by those we help.

We do not charge a fee, but invite donations. Volunteers will be paid out of pocket expenses.

To help us to grow this service, we need more volunteers, both to work with our clients, and particularly we need some people who are based from home to act as co-ordinators, taking calls from clients and finding one of our volunteers who can help out.

If you would like to volunteer, or think you might be eligible to use our service, please look on the web http://link6andrwb.btck.co.uk/ or phone 07879 394666.

We look forward to hearing from you.

EXTEND is a keep fit class for those over 60 or less able. We meet in Lyneham Village Hall 10-11 on a Friday morning and St Bart’s Church Hall, Rope Yard, RWB 2-3 on a Friday afternoon. We do gentle exercise to music and have a good laugh as well, but we could do with a few more members in the class. Sessions are only £2.50. To find out more, please contact Allison Bucknell on 01793 854421.
