REVEREND ALISON WAY
Windy weather
It may be a bit of a national pre-occupation, but we have had a lot to talk about our weather of late. The prelonged cold, the late spring and I hope as you read this, the portents of warmer times that have dawned as I write, have lasted. The month of May brings with it a lot of enjoyable events, which would be even more splendid if the weather is kind; not least our walk for Rogation (5th May – ring/email me for more information if you wish to join us) and the annual plant fair at Bushton Manor (6th May 11am – 4pm).
Talking about the weather is not a new thing - We were talking a lot last year and for centuries before that too. The Bible is full of stories where the weather plays a part or teaches us about life, God and how to live courageously. The stories of Noah and the great flood and Jonah in a huge storm at sea (and ending up in the belly of a large fish) are amongst the more dramatic and memoriable.
The Holy Spirit is often portrayed as an aspect of the weather, as the wind. This month in our worship, we concentrate on the Holy Spirit as we come to the feast of Pentecost. This celebrates how the presence of the God is with us day by day through the spirit Jesus left us. It says in John’s gospel – The wind blows where it chooses, and you hear the sound of it, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit. John 3:8. Do come and join us for worship this Pentecost or at any time, and be refreshed by the presence of God with us. We know in this past winter and early spring, just how powerful and striking the wind can be, and how that speaks deeply to our hearts of God’s love for us through his spirit.
With love in Christ, Alison Way Rector, Benefice of Woodhill, The Rectory, Wood Street, Clyffe Pypard, Wilts, SN4 7PY rectorwoodhill@gmail.com 01793 739044

FAREWELL SHIRLEY
At the end of last month we said “Farewell” to Shirley Wallis. Shirley was born in 1936, the eldest of three siblings. She and John married in 1959 and she worked in administration.
We extend our sympathies to John and their relatives.
DAVID JOHN TAYLOR
The Taylor family has lost a Husband, Dad and Grampy. Dave was born in 1954 and has lived in Broad Town all his life; a doting son to Sid and Rita Taylor.
He worked for Wilts County Council for 34 years. Dave sadly leaves behind his wife of 33 years, 5 loving children and 14 grandchildren.
He passed away on the 17th April following a stroke. Dave's funeral will be held on May 3rd at 10.30am in Kingsdown Cremetorium, followed by refreshments in Broad Town Village Hall.
COFFEE MORNING – MAY 25TH
The doors of the Saturday morning café will be open again on May 25th for refreshments, a chat and a chance to meet the neighbours. There will be books for exchange or sale and plants for sale. If anyone is splitting any plants this month and would like to donate the unused portions to the Church they will be gladly accepted.
BROAD TOWN COMMUNITY LED PLANNING (CLP) GROUP
We are one month on and we are still waiting for Wiltshire Council approval of the Neighbourhood Area Designation as submitted by the seven villages that make up the NEW-V Neighbourhood Area. As soon as news is received we will post it onto our Community Forum site. In the meantime we have provided a report to the Annual Parish Meeting saying that our focus this year is “promoting a robust and transparent consultation process that identifies choices and potential outcomes, and provides clarity and agreement on how choices between options can be made”. Unfortunately we cannot make a start on this until we have received the go-ahead from Wiltshire Council!
On a practical note, we have noticed how keen some of you are in having a Community Shop. This does not need to wait until Wiltshire Council has made a decision and there is plenty of information available. Our group does not have enough people to look into this thoroughly but we can provide website details to research so please let us know if we can help.
If you would like to find out more details of the Neighbourhood Plan process the Project Managers have set up a website www.new-v.co.uk. Additionally we have a Community Forum site on www.broad-town.co.uk. Please contact me if you would like to go onto our mailing list on lorraine@mrsbillis.co.uk. Everyone is very welcome to come along to our next CLP Group meeting that will be held on Friday April 26th 8.15 p.m. to 9.15 p.m. at the Village Hall.
THE FOUR WAYS COMMUNITY PUB, BROAD TOWN VILLAGE HALL – ALL WELCOME!
BAR OPEN EVERY FRIDAY 8pm-late ~ BINGO EVERY SUNDAY 7.15pm–10pm
Fancy earning yourself a FREE nationally recognised qualification that’s respected by employers but normally costs up to £200? If you:
• Are over 17 years & 6 months old
• Enjoy socialising with folks of all ages and are confident handling cash
• Can commit to helping behind the bar for at least one full session every six weeks (more frequent rota over holiday periods available for Uni/College students living away from home during term-time)
• Are capable of passing a CRB check?
Then Broad Town Social Club Committee will fund your whole entry fee for the BIIAB Level 2 Award for Personal Licence Holders
The BIAA-what?
It stands for: the British Institute of Innkeepers Awarding Body. It’s the main government-approved authority for certifying hospitality professionals. Everybody you’ve ever met down the pub reckons they know all about booze and about drinking, but how much of what they ‘know’ is a load of old bull…? More than you’d think! This course covers the lot: alcohol and the law, alcohol and health, and much more. Increasingly, many councils and police forces nationally make passing this course mandatory if you want to run a pub or even organise an event such as a wedding or sports fixture which involves a bar: so this certificate is a handy thing to have! Whatever your career aspirations, an additional accreditation always looks great on your CV, and BTSC is also offering bonus prizes for all participants who score 100%! More info at http://biiab.bii.org/qualifications/qualification-APLH ; or print copies are available from us too.
As well as being trained in all aspects of our bar operation by experienced staff, a small amount of preparatory study will be required before attending the 1-day course (e-learning may be available as an alternative to web-literate candidates with recent bar/catering experience) after you have completed at least 10 four-hour sessions behind our bar.
FINAL closing date for all applications: 30 June 2013, but you won’t have to start your qualifying sessions until September if you’ve got a busy summer planned! We are only funding a limited number of places – pop into the village hall any Friday or Sunday to express your interest ASAP!

KEEPING SAFE
I should confess right now that I did an article on how to cope in hot weather last year – and what happened to the weather last summer? So it is with some reluctance I say: hopefully by the time you read this we will be having some warmer weather! At the very least, the daylight hours should be longer and we will be hoping to get out for some fresh air. Which brings me onto a couple of things to consider:
- How easy is it to get in and out of your home? Would it be easier if you had some grab handles at the door? Or maybe a slope rather than a doorstep?
- Is mobility a problem generally? Have you thought of using a frame or “rollator” to give extra stability and reduce risk of falling?
- Is your home secure? Could you use some advice on home security?
- When in your back garden, is your front door locked? Could someone walk straight in?
If you need any information on home safety, security or mobility, get in touch.
