REVEREND ALISON WAY

Summertime As spring moves into summer the words of that rousing hymn of praise ‘Great is thy faithfulness’ come to mind. The second verse begins:

Summer and winter, and springtime and harvest, sun, moon and stars in their courses above, join with all nature in manifold witness to thy great faithfulness, mercy and love.

There is something in long summer days of warm sunshine that speaks directly to our spirits, and brings refreshment and perspective to all that we are. I hope it also helps us to think beyond ourselves to the God that loves us so much. We are all created unique and special in the eyes of our creator God, and we should not underestimate his overwhelming love for us and his mercy. Mercy that was brought to us through Jesus Christ, our risen Lord.

I also hope thankfulness and praise for God’s faithfulness over the centuries will be at the heart of our special celebrations this month and particularly the week of events in Tockenham from 20^th- 26^th July. This is part of 700th anniversary celebrations for St Giles Church, which starts with Tockenham Village fayre and fun run in the afternoon of July 20^th. It moves on to a special ‘Songs of Praise’ service on July 21^st at 6pm and ends with a special concert in Church on Friday 26^th July (get in touch with me for more information about the other events this week).

There is also a children’s work shop on Saturday 6^th July at 2pm in Hilmarton Church Hall for key stage 1 and 2 children (it is not too late to get in touch to book a place). We will be thinking about the Noah’s ark story in a session entitled ‘Who put the colours in the rainbow’ and the craft

activities include making rainbow fridge magnets.

There is also our second animal blessing service in St Lawrence Church Hilmarton at 11am on July 21^st – please bring your animal (on a lead or in a suitable animal carrier as appropriate) or a picture/photograph of your animal. Young, old, feathery, scaly or furry most welcome.

CHURCHYARD

A big “Thank you” is expressed by the Church members to everyone who turned up with their strimmers to help tidy the churchyard. We now have a new person looking after the churchyard.

BROAD TOWN PRE SCHOOL SESSIONS

Come and visit our fantastic preschool and forest school at Broad Town. We run morning, afternoon and all day sessions (9am-3pm).

We welcome children from 2 years old. Children are entitled to 15 funded hours a week the term after their 3rd birthday.

BROAD TOWN WI

Our talk last month was entitled ‘Love food, hate waste’. Emma Croft, who is the Waste Minimiser Officer for the Wiltshire Wildlife Trust, told us about her job encouraging people to waste less, recycle more and mend things rather than just sending them to landfill. The council spends £4.5 million on landfill tax each year.

We were shocked to find how much food is wasted on a single day, mainly vegetables, fruit, bread and dairy products. For instance more than 5.3 million potatoes are thrown away each day and 4.1 million apples also end up in the bin along with 1.4 million sausages. Half of what is thrown away could have been consumed.

Part of Emma’s job is to help people plan for the week so that they don’t buy too much, portion control, how to store food to prolong it’s shelf life, as well as suggestions of how to use up excess food to prevent it being wasted. There are lots of tips on the ‘Love food, hate waste’ website.

She also showed us the latest food waste digesters, which are supplied, from the council, at a 78% reduction and which can deal with all types of food waste including cooked food, meat and bones etc without attracting vermin, preventing it going to landfill sites where it produces methane, a dangerous greenhouse gas.

UPDATE FROM YOUR PARISH COUNCIL

If you have children in the village there will be leaflets put in their school bags soon.

Dangerous Parking. A number of Mums came to our latest Parish Council meeting to raise the issue of parking around the school at dropping off and picking up times. This is a particularly dangerous spot and the current parking of some people is making it an accident waiting to happen. No one would want their child to be at risk, so if you use your car please park considerately, safely and consider other people's children as you would wish your own to be considered.

PC meetings. We have changed the start time of our meetings to 18:30 - remember we meet on the second Monday of every month.

New: PC Surgeries. As we said in our election leaflet, your Parish Council want to hear your views and ideas. So we propose holding a bi-monthly surgery on a Friday night in the Village Hall, courtesy of the Fourways pub. We will be there on 12 July between 20:00 and 21:00 so come along, get yourself a drink and have a chat to us. Please note that any issue that requires a PC decision would be noted and taken to the next PC meeting; we would not be able to give you an answer there and then as it would be illegal!

Wind Turbines. Many of you may be aware of the proposed installation of a single wind turbine in the village. If you wish to comment on this you can have your say at info@murexenergy.co.uk.

CLERKS CLIPPINGS

1. Parking at the School. Cars are being parked thoughtlessly at the School, and there is concern about the safety of children. It is particularly dangerous on the bend towards Royal Wootton Bassett, where cars have been parked right up to the bollards, obscuring the view of oncoming drivers. Mothers, the safety of children is the issue. The School is doing it's best, and the Parish council support this; if you want to 'network' make sure your car is parked in a safe place.

2. The Parish Council will meet at 18.30hrs on the second Monday in the month in future.

BROAD TOWN COMMUNITY LED PLANNING (CLP) GROUP

Consultation, consultation, consultation is the theme at the moment in the Area Neighbourhood Plan process.

The next stage of the local consultation process has been launched and (hopefully!) you will see details about it in the press release elsewhere in this Newsletter. We do urge you to complete the survey on https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/NEWVNPSurvey so that you can continue to be involved. Further information about this latest consultation stage and the New Villages Neighbourhood Plan process is on www.new-v.co.uk as well as on our own Community Forum site.

We also want to start to focus on the type of questions and issues that we would like to propose for the final stages of the local consultation to ensure that it is robust and brings you all the facts that you need to make informed choices.

ST GILES TOCKENHAM 700TH ANNIVERSARY

This summer there will be a series of events in Tockenham to mark the 700th anniversary of the institution of the first rector there. On Sunday 21 July at 6 pm we are having a Songs of Praise in the church – it’s not too soon to choose your favourite hymns: Please ring Ken Arnold on 01793 854157 with your choice, and come along to join this special summer evening occasion.

The Kentwood Show Choir is coming back again after their astounding performance two years ago. The concert is at 7.30 pm on Friday 26 July in the church. Admission by ticket only (book early to be sure of your seats) and are on sale now from Ken and Pauline Arnold, 01793 854157. Prices are £10 for adults, or £8 for under 16’s or adults 60 and over.

Later this summer the Bishop of Ramsbury is coming to the St Giles Patronal festival. This is on Sunday 1 September at 11 am in the church – it is a benefice communion, and will be followed by a bring-and-share lunch in the village hall next door.

Steven Spielberg directs twice Academy Award winner Daniel Day-Lewis in Lincoln, A revealing drama focusing on Abraham Lincoln and the 16th President’s tumultuous final months in office.

Local North Wiltshire connection. It is a little known fact the ancestors of Lincoln’s mother (Nancy Hanks) came from the Malmesbury area of Wiltshire and the family has a local history going back to Saxon times. It is said Abraham inherited his drive, initiative and looks from his Mother. In the film this part of Lincoln’s life shows him in a nation divided by war and the strong winds of change, Lincoln pursues a course of action designed to end the war, unite the country and abolish slavery. With the moral courage and fierce determination to succeed, his choices during this critical moment will change the fate of generations to come.

Good Neighbour Scheme is a free and confidential service, which provides information and signposts older residents living in Wiltshire to the excellent services and organisations that are available to them. The Good Neighbour Scheme provides information about services available to help older people to live more independent and fulfilling lives.

Summer months can sometimes be as bleak as the winter ones as there is often the perception that everyone else is having a great time in the sun with friends and family. So I wanted to draw your attention in this article to some of the groups within the villages which offer a huge variety for older (and not so old) people whatever your interest or ability.

Sometimes it’s hard to find out what’s on and how to access these groups or a bit scary to turn up on your own for the first time, so that’s where I come in. I can provide you or your friends or neighbours with information about these groups and even come along with you for the first time. As ever the LINK schemes are happy to help when they can with transport issues.

Below are just some of the activities / events you can get involved with in the area:

· Gentle exercise groups,

· Friendly coffee mornings / afternoons and lunch clubs,

· Local Arts and Craft groups,

· Gardening, bowls and bridge groups.

· Etc – just ask and there may be a group near you! There are also several great befriending services in the area, where someone can pop in for a cuppa and a chat once a week or fortnight if you don’t fancy leaving your home or aren’t able to. BROAD TOWN LITTLE GIG 2013

The White Horse, Winterbourne Bassett – Saturday 31^st August 4pm-late

A smaller, more intimate, acoustically-oriented version of our village's regular summer bash is going ahead in the grounds of the White Horse, Winterbourne Bassett, in aid of good causes such as Kev Thomson's Wellington to Waterloo bike ride (Grenadier Guards Colonel's Fund). Advance tickets available soon from the White Horse, Broad Hinton Post Office and other outlets.

We're always looking for additional helpers, committee members, suggestions of acts to feature, offers of support/sponsorship etc, and we'll be starting to plan 2014's event during June and July this year. THE GUILD OF WILTSHIRE ARTISTS

Run workshops at the Village Hall on every third Saturday of the month from 10am to 4pm. All are welcome including painters who are beginners.

Tea and Coffee provided but do bring a packed lunch.
