REVEREND ALISON WAY

700 CELEBRATIONS!

I recently talked to the children at the ‘Who put the colours in the rainbow’ work shop about St Giles’ Church 700th anniversary celebrations. They were suitably impressed at something being 700 years old! Actually we know that parts of that particular church building are older than that and many of the materials it was made of certainly are too! The building includes stones from a roman villa and interestingly at times in its history this church was dedicated to St John the Evangelist. We are celebrating this year as the list of rectors of St Giles’ Church goes back to 1313 and the first rector detailed was John Durraunt.

I do hope you will be able to join us for a special celebration of St Giles day at 11am on 1st September – The Bishop of Ramsbury, The Right Reverend Dr Edward Condry will lead the worship on this occasion. This will be his first visit to one of the benefice churches since he took up this role in 2012. All will be most welcome at the ‘bring and share lunch’ afterwards – just bring something to share!

In our benefice as well as St Giles Church, we have three other beautiful, historic and special church buildings (Christ Church in Broad Town, St Peter’s Church in Clyffe Pypard and St Lawrence’s Church in Hilmarton). We must record our very grateful thanks to the many, many people who work hard to maintain and cherish each church in each community.

St Lawrence’s Church in Hilmarton also has its patronal festival celebration in this month of August (at 10:30 on August 11th) – so don’t miss that too.

With love in Christ, Alison Way Rector, Benefice of Woodhill, The Rectory, Wood Street, Clyffe Pypard, Wilts, SN4 7PY rectorwoodhill@gmail.com 01793 739044

BROAD TOWN SCHOOL

On Thursday the school said “Goodbye” to 8 children who are going on to secondary school. All the children were presented with their Bibles, mugs (with sweets) and a composite picture of their life at school. We wish them well as they venture out into the big wide world.

CONGRATULATIONS

We send congratulations to Niamh Rawlins who has gained a scholarship to Lipscombe University, Tennessee for 4 years to study Exercise Physiology. Whilst she is out there Niamh will also be playing Women’s Soccer in the University League.

UPDATE FROM YOUR PARISH COUNCIL

· NEW-V Neighbourhood Plan online survey – please fill in the questionnaire if you have not already done so. As with the consultation events in February, it is essential for the village that Broad Town’s engagement with this is as high as possible. The survey (click on the link at http://new-v.co.uk/broad+town/ ) needs to receive as many inputs as possible from Broad Town, in order to make sure that your views are represented in this, the latest stage of the consultation process, as the project managers (Common Places) draw up the Neighbourhood Plan.

· The Neighbourhood Plan’s project manager (Mark Goodman of Common Places) will be invited to Broad Town soon, to discuss how the village (and its specific concerns, issues and interests) can be best represented in the final version of the Plan. To start this discussion, the CLPG has produced a consultation document which describes and explores these concerns and interests. Please contact any member of the CLPG or the Parish Council if you would like to read this document and input your ideas to the document, ideally before it is sent to Common Places.

· The CATG details, which primarily concern road classifications and speed limit reviews (eg, past the school and through Thornhill), are still unavailable from Wiltshire Council. These were promised in the Spring, then April, May, etc...We’re still patiently waiting, but the delay is apparently caused by a problem with vital traffic information supplied by the Council’s consultants and we have no influence on accelerating this process.

· The proposal for a 77m wind turbine on land at Marston Farm has been withdrawn by the developers, Murex Energy.

· The Parish Council meetings are still in the Village Hall on the second Monday of each month, but the move to an earlier start (1830) has met with universal approval and so has been made permanent by a change to our standing orders. We look forward to seeing you in the public gallery soon!

BROAD TOWN COMMUNITY LED PLANNING (CLP) GROUP

The online survey that is part of the consultation process for our Neighbourhood Plan continues to be available, so we do encourage you to have your say by completing the survey on https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/NEWVNPSurvey . Further information about this current consultation and the New Villages Neighbourhood Plan process is on www.new-v.co.uk as well as on our own Community Forum site on www.broad-town.co.uk .

At our last meeting we focused on the type of questions and issues that we would like to propose for the final stages of the local consultation, to ensure that it brings us all the facts that we need to make informed choices. We are keen to see a work-plan for both the overall Neighbourhood Plan and Broad Town-specific items that sets out actions with agreed milestones. To that end we are inviting Mark Goodman, the Neighbourhood Plan Project Manager, to our next meeting to put our questions to him. As usual the meeting will be open to all Broad Town residents and we will publish the date together with our questions as soon as we can.

Please contact me if you would like to go onto our mailing list on lorraine@mrsbillis.co.uk. Fed up with everything being online and you would like paper copies? Give Lorraine a call on 731188. Finally, please keep a look out for the date of our next meeting that will take place at the Village Hall.

BROAD TOWN COMMUNITY SPEED WATCH

FACTS: Over 1,500 vehicles pass through Broad Town every day. At certain times, 60% of these vehicles exceed the 30mph speed limit, yet just 1% of recorded speeders live in the village. The average speed logged is 40mph in the 30mph zone: meaning half of all speeders exceed 40mph. Top speed recorded in July 2013: 59mph

Summer 2013’s most prolific speeders recorded travelling at over 45mph: Commercial trucks belonging to an RWB company: 17 speeding occurrences.

Blue Vauxhall Signum with a personalised plate: 10 speeding occurrences. Silver VW van towing large catering trailer: 9 speeding occurrences

QUESTION: What are YOU going to do about it? Contact: Matthew on 01793 731499 email oscar.littlelad@gmail.com or come talk to us anytime you see us out on the road.

If you feel that speeding is a problem and want your voice heard, please contact Broad Town Parish Council so your concerns can be recorded.

You may have noticed that there have been fewer sessions since Christmas. The police requested this because a key member of staff left just when the number of participating villages had exceeded 70 with many more waiting to join.

The Police Commissioner Angus Mcpherson heard of this and has now provided the resources to support and significantly expand CSW in the County. In September two full time Police staff will be appointed and many new schemes will be established. A new computer system will be installed which will ensure offenders receive letters from the Police within days of the offence. For the first time the Police will have access to a County wide list of vehicles which are regularly driven at high speed. These vehicles are the most likely to be involved in injury related accidents. The information will enable the Police to locate regular offenders and target them. We can only speculate just how useful this list will prove to be in detecting those responsible for road crime.

At certain times of day the number of speeding cars exceeds 50%, with the worst location being outside the school, as cars speed up before the 40 limit or fail to slow when leaving. Many are travelling at over 50mph. We will need to expand our efforts if we are to provide the information to support the police. If you would like to help and are able to spend a few hours a month please contact Mike Broomfield as follows:- Email (preferred) michaelbroomfield@btinternet.com Phone 01793 731893 Mobile 07818253604

We would like to take the opportunity to thank our local community police who regularly attend our sessions when possible, carry out their own sessions and also arrange for traffic police attention.

Just a reminder that I am here to help with information to (hopefully) solve problems and make your life a little easier. Please call me,

Ellen Blacker on 07557 110414 or email me at rwbcrickladegnc@communityfirst.org.uk
