Remembering in hope

The truth is that losing someone through their death is very hard to bear. In our hearts, their love lives on as ‘a flame that never dies’, as we carry the sense and the influence of that person onwards as each new day dawns. In the journey of life, it is helpful to find creative ways to honour, cherish and remember our lost loved ones now at peace and at rest deep in the heart of our loving heavenly Father God. This kind of remembering is just one aspect of our annual benefice-wide service for commemorating our departed, called “Remembering in Hope”. This year, this will take place at 4pm on Sunday 3^rd November at St Lawrence’s Church, Hilmarton, with an opportunity for refreshments afterwards. At the service, we will give thanks to God for those who have been significant in our lives and have died. If you wish, there is also an opportunity at this service to light a candle in their memory. In addition if you would like to have a loved one remembered by name on this occasion, please let me have their full name by getting in touch with me at the usual phone number or e-mail address, or by writing the name clearly in the “Remembering in Hope” book, which will be available at most Church worship during October.

October also brings lots of harvest celebrations and I look forward to seeing you across the different Church Services, School Services and harvest social celebrations planned for this year. Don’t forget to bring a donation for Swindon Foodbank with you to whatever you attend. At the moment they particularly need tinned meat, small bags of sugar and longlife milk.

Thanks to all who supported the last coffee morning and came to enjoy a sociable morning. £151.96 was raised for Church funds. This goes towards the £1,100 we have to find each month just to keep the Church doors open.

FRIENDS OF BROAD TOWN CHURCH

The Friends’ account is now 10 years old and we have £7,062. So far the largest project the money has been used for was to remove the plaster from the inside of the west wall of the church. Now the wall is dry we will either repoint or replaster. This will depend on what the Diocese allows us to do.

We are also looking into a new incumbent’s board as the present one is full.

CHRISTMAS RAFFLE TICKETS AND COFFEE MORNING

The Christmas raffle tickets are now available from any member of the PCC or phone Margaret on 01793 854200. The draw will take place on November 30^th at the Christmas coffee morning. The cafe will be open from 10am to 12noon for refreshments, cakes, tombola and goodies. We are also on the list this year for a special visitor!

BROAD TOWN PRE SCHOOL SESSIONS

Come and visit our fantastic preschool and forest school at Broad Town. We run morning, afternoon and all day sessions (9am-3pm).

We welcome children from 2 years old. Children are entitled to 15 funded hours a week the term after their 3rd birthday.

A range of sessions are available from September, please phone supervisor Jennie White on 731911 for further details.

BROAD TOWN SCHOOL

Someone has put some old bamboo type fencing in the school car park. Please could villagers note that the school car park is for recycling only. All recycling items should be put in the appropriate bins and not left on the ground. Items that are not suitable for recycling should be taken to the local tip. Thank you.

BROAD TOWN HARVEST

Sunday 13^th October. This year, as well as produce, we will be celebrating the Village. The doors of the Church will be open from 10am till the service at 6pm for members of the Village to see the displays about the Village. Also on loan for the day will be an interesting old ordnance survey map of the village.

Light refreshments will be available all day with the harvest tea at 5pm.

DEVELOPMENT IN BROAD TOWN: Coming soon….

Do you want to know more about how the Neighbourhood Plan will influence any development in Broad Town? Then come along to a presentation on Tuesday 8^th October 2013 from Mark Goodman of Common Places, the Project Manager leading the development of our Neighbourhood plan. Mark will tell you about progress and give you feedback from the drop in sessions in February (remember the 'Postcards from the Future'?), the online survey during the summer and other consultations: He will also share the next steps and be available to answer questions and explain how your own thoughts can be included in the Neighbourhood Plan and how it could help the future of Broad Town. Watch out for a leaflet drop giving you more details.

Update from your Parish Council:

New-V Neighbourhood Plan. An informal discussion recently took place between Common Places (Mark Goodman and Sarah Martin), the Project Managers for the New-V Neighbourhood plan and representatives from both the Parish Council and the CLPG. The purpose of this informal discussion was to a) explore how we ensure the Neighbourhood Plan is Broad Town-friendly, b) find out what progress has been to date and how that will be fed-back to our community and c) agree what happens next.

Wiltshire Good Neighbours. This is a free and confidential service that can help you with all sorts of problems or queries, particularly as we approach winter. Take a look at the village notice boards for the services on offer or call them on 01380 732828.

Proposed solar PV project. Good Energy visited the PC and gave us a brief of their proposed project at Goldborough Farm and what benefits there could be for Broad Town. Look out for further details regarding a consultation event on 2^nd Oct in the Village Hall.

Broad Town Road review. We have to agree what feedback we give to Wiltshire Council in respect of this review, at our next Parish Council meeting on 14th Oct. Getting our road reviewed has been a joint effort of campaigning by the Parish Council and data from Community Speedwatch, with a lot of hard work from both groups. So if you have any comments regarding the outcome of this review please make them known to Roy Davey 01793 731154 before 14th Oct. Speak now or lose your opportunity to make our road safer for everyone.

Clerks Clippings. Inconsiderate bonfires – Complaints have been received from residents in Redhills about people lighting bonfires. Please could households now use their garden waste wheelie bins which are available free of charge from Wiltshire Council.

BROAD TOWN WI

Our speaker in September was Terry Bracher from the Wiltshire Historical Society and his talk was entitled ‘Wiltshire’s Horrible History’.

He told us stories of events that happened through the ages in nearby towns including Marlborough, Chippenham, Downton, Shrewton, Wroughton and many others.

We heard about some documented stories of plague, pestilence and disease and the curious cures and of gory crimes with even nastier punishments including hanging, beheading, dissecting and drowning. There is a ducking stool in Wootton Bassett museum which was used to find witches.

Our October meeting will be at 7.30pm on Wednesday 16^th October. Our speaker will be our own Pam Howells and she will be talking about ‘Homeopathic First Aid’ (self-help remedies)

At our meeting on Wednesday 19^th March, next year, we would like to invite former members of Broad Town WI to join us. We are interested in any stories and anecdotes, old photos etc. that they could share with us. More details nearer the time, but please book the date.

Barn dance. Broad town WI are holding a Barn Dance in the village hall on Saturday 9^th November from 7.30 -11.00pm Tickets are £10 and there will be a live band ‘Hogs Head’ and a light supper. The bar will be open for drinks. Tickets are available from Jane Rowe on 731105. No dancing experience necessary. Numbers are limited so don’t wait too long!

THE FOUR WAYS BROAD TOWN: your Community Pub (in Broad Town village hall)

Want to have your say in the running of the Community Pub? Come along to the Social Club's AGM at 8pm Friday 11th October and make your opinion count. Open to all: have your say in what we do in 2014. Calling all sports fans! If you would like any of your favourite sporting events to be shown on our new big screen, please come along to the AGM with dates and times so we can book the hall in advance and make sure that we’ve got plenty of beer in to celebrate! Prospective committee members and event organisers always needed – come along any Friday or Sunday.

BAR 8pm-late EVERY FRIDAY – thanks to our new bar staff Lesley and Elliot, we are open as usual October 4^th, 11^th, 18th and 25th: enjoy a drink, FREE DARTS, FREE POOL FREE TABLE TENNIS and FREE TABLE FOOTBALL with friends and neighbours. LITTLE GIG 2013 & BIG GIG 2014

Whether you donated your money, your equipment, your muscles, your time or your talent to 2013’s Little Gig: THANK YOU. Six bands for six quid: best Little Gig ever! We were quite overwhelmed by everyone's generosity. If you've got any more photos of bands etc, please tag 'em with “BroadTown BigGig” on Facebook so we can all see them! Thanks again to Kurt & Sam for hosting our bash at The White Horse in Winterbourne Bassett.

ADVANCE NOTICE: Big Gig committee AGM – 8pm Friday 22^nd November; Broad Town Village Hall.

To ensure the continued survival of Broad Town’s annual village event, we need at very least eight committee members - including a new chairman - and a couple of dozen dedicated helpers to come along and offer their services at the AGM. So, if you don’t get involved, it’s not going to happen.

BROAD TOWN ARCHAEOLOGICAL & HISTORY PROJECT:
Next Event, Our 2^nd Memory Collection Event, Broad Town Village Hall - Sunday October 20^th 1pm – 5 pm

We are currently planning our next session of 'Memory Collections'. The last event was a major success with many local people bringing photographs and documents for us to look at. We scanned over 300 items of parish history, with the potential for lots more at the next session (ok we ran out of time!). The next session is currently under development. We are hoping more people will come along with stories and photos, as well as helping to continue adding information to the big parish map!

We would particularly like to make contact with any long time or former residents of Broad Town, who have memories of the village in the past decades and would like to share them for the record.

And as ever there will be tea and cake and an opportunity to catch up with old friends and neighbours.

BROAD TOWN COMMUNITY SPEED WATCH

There has been a 40% reduction in road deaths in Wiltshire and the police give most of the credit for this to the activities of the 72 Speedwatch groups operating across the County. In contrast the neighbouring counties have all seen rises in road deaths and are therefore now setting up their own CSW schemes. Swindon Council has now also joined in with the Wiltshire Council scheme.

The Police Commissioner, Police, Wilshire Council & Swindon Council want to build on success and are increasing funding. I attended a briefing meeting at Devizes Police HQ on Monday 16^th September. Extra staff & resources are now in place to expand CSW and ensure warning letters are sent quickly to speeding motorists. The Police will now be able to effectively target the hard core of persistent high end and repeat speeders.

HILMARTON MOVIOLA

19th October Robot and Frank Comedy (12A) 89 mins

In the near future, Frank is a retired jewel-thief living alone while his successful son, Hunter, tries to care for him from afar. Finally, Hunter gets him a robot caretaker, but Frank soon learns that it is as useful as a burglary aide…. In other words this is about us oldies coping with new technology! The terrific Frank Langella is the father, James Marsden the son with Liv Tyler and Susan Sarandon along for the ride and Peter Sarsgaard voicing the robot. At times very funny, always charming but also (like all great comedy, think of ‘Hancock’) with tragedy just below the surface. “Langella is wonderful as Frank; the best scenes are those between Frank and the robot. We are not prepared for the emotional hit as the story reaches its conclusion, leaving us misty eyed and more than satisfied of the journey we have shared.” Urban Cinefile

THE GUILD OF WILTSHIRE ARTISTS

Run workshops at the Village Hall on every third Saturday of the month from 10am to 4pm. All are welcome including painters who are beginners.

Tea and Coffee provided but do bring a packed lunch.

Are you ready for Winter???? The days are still warm and relatively long so who wants to think about winter-YOU DO! In a very short time the daily temperature will drop, the clocks go forward and the world becomes a different place. Very few people love the winter months and as we get older our bodies find coping with the cold more difficult and health problems can develop. By being prepared we can stay warm and healthy this coming winter.

Is your property ready for winter? Check the exterior of your property. Are there any loose or missing tiles on the roof, are your gutters clear of leaves, and are there any damp patches on the walls? Use a known and reputable company to do any repair work now. Personal recommendation is best, or try the Age UK Registered Traders list, or Trading Standards website www.buywithconfidence.gov.uk. Don’t wait for the rain or the snow falling – that is when a rogue trader comes knocking on your door telling you that they have noticed a problem which you may not have! Get your central heating boiler serviced; if you use fires get the chimney swept. It is the landlord’s responsibility to get these carried out if you live in rented property. Make sure smoke and carbon monoxide alarms are working. If you haven’t got any get some installed they could save your life if your air vents become blocked.

Draft proofing doors and windows, loft insulation and lagging your hot water tank all help keep your home warm and comfortable as well as lowering your heating bills.

Did you know that an electric blanket which is designed to stay on low all night is more beneficial to your body warmth than keeping the temperature high in your bedroom at night and cheaper. Malmesbury Fire Station is open for checking the safety of electric blankets on 23^rd October. Book an appointment on 01225 713557.

Have a supply of salt and sand to put on your path and /or steps so that you can walk more safely outside when it is icy.

Are you going to be warm and healthy this winter? If you are over 65 you are entitled to a free flu jab. The flu virus changes so you need to have a jab every year with the latest vaccine. Flu can develop into Pneumonia which can be very serious, even fatal. Most GP surgeries have a flu clinic. Make sure you are booked in.

Ideally your living areas should be 18-21˚C in the day. Heat your bedroom before you go to bed and keep it at about 18˚C overnight. In the coldest weather have the heat come on a little earlier so the rest of the house is warm when you get up.

TOCKENHAM ST GILES 700TH ANNIVERSARY

To celebrate this, we have produced a Tockenham calendar for 2014 price £6. It’s well worth the money for these full colour photos of the village in different seasons of the year. If you want an envelope the right size for posting it to friends, that’s an extra 50 pence. If you’d like to see one, or place an order, please ring Ken and Pauline Arnold, 01793 854157. Also on sale are copies of Mary Waters’ book with its excellent photos Come walk with me - a walk around Tockenham. This was first produced in 2004, but is still a great source of information about the village and well worth buying if you haven’t already done so. It’s £6 a copy, also available from Ken and Pauline.

Finally for this year– on Friday 18^th October at 7.30pm in the church we are having a talk from a local archaeologist Mr Bob Clarke, on the history of Tockenham with its Roman and Saxon connections. Save the date – this sounds great!
