REVEREND ALISON WAY
This month I have reproduced for you a letter from the Right Revd. Dr Edward Condry, Bishop of Ramsbury from the November edition of Salisbury Diocese Grapevine – he writes thus: - ‘ A fully-grown Common Hippopotamus can weigh as much as 4 tonnes and grow to 4 metres in length and a height of 1.4 metres (measured up to its shoulder). It doesn’t matter whether the hippo is standing on its head, wallowing in mud, or swimming under water: the measurements will always be the same.
A church is different. A church is not a hippo. So why do we persist in measuring it in just one way, like a hippo? We are obsessed with average attendance on a Sunday morning. As a result we are likely to be depressed. Your church is not a hippo. There are so many other ways of measuring a church which give a different picture. A much more optimistic picture. There are hundreds of children in Messy Church. There are 42,000 children in church schools in this Diocese. Numerous churches are experimenting with meeting in different places and styles. There are thousands of people involved in prayer groups and study groups. The churches of our diocese are probably better kept now than they have been for centuries. Members of churches are involved in numerous community events, projects and organisations, from village hall committees to the Trussell Trust and Street Pastors.
The parish church provides a place for joy as well as grief. Remembrance Sunday will see churches and services packed. Many of our village churches welcome half to two-thirds of the population to worship in any year. So let’s find realistic and optimistic ways of measuring the church’.
November in worship brings times of grief and joy too, through the commemoration of the departed and our marking of Remembrance Sunday, and to the Patronal Festival for Christchurch Broad Town on the feast of Christ the King. May the God of love dwell in our hearts richly and fully and bring us real and lasting peace.
With love in Christ, Alison Way Rector, Benefice of Woodhill, The Rectory, Wood Street, Clyffe Pypard, Wilts, SN4 7PY rectorwoodhill@gmail.com 01793 739044

BROAD TOWN COMMUNITY LED PLANNING (CLP) GROUP
Did you go to the Presentation Evening at the Village Hall on October 8th? If so, you will remember that Mark Goodman, the Project Manager for the New-V Neighbourhood Plan, asked for a Group to be set up to work on the details to go into the Broad Town section of the Plan. By the time you read this the Group, that includes representatives from the CLPG and the Parish Council, will already have met twice. We are looking at the issues you raised in the Presentation Events held in February and the recent online survey to find different options and ideas to meet those issues. This is the first stage in forming policies to go into our Neighbourhood Plan. The final policies will need to make sense to planning authorities in the future and will be used when planning applications for Broad Town are considered.
We are holding our next meeting on Friday 8th November at 8.15pm. at the Village Hall and it would be great to have more of you come along. You are welcome to join in our meeting or just listen in while you are enjoying a drink from the Community Pub bar.
Please contact us if you would like to go onto our mailing list on lorraine@mrsbillis.co.uk. Would you like paper copies if you don’t have access to e-mail? Give Lorraine a call on 731188. More information is on our Community Forum on www.broad-town.co.uk or from Common Places www.New-V.co.uk .

BROAD TOWN WI
October’s meeting was presented by our own member, Pam Howells, who talked to us about Homeopathic First Aid. Pam is a qualified homeopath and works from her home in Cotmarsh. Pam strongly believes that, rather than rush to the doctor at the first signs of illness, we should try a homeopathic cure first, as these are generally very successful for treating ailments including headaches, stomach and digestion problems, rashes, fevers, bruising etc.
Pam explained how she decides which remedies to use, matching the symptoms of the illness with a remedy that produces similar symptoms. She has had great success even when treating patients with complex symptoms which they have had for many years. Many can be traced back to traumatic events such as bereavement, accident, redundancy etc.
Thanks to Pam, I think many of us will be looking with renewed interest at what homeopathy has to offer.
Our next meeting is entitled ‘Yoga: a taster session’ with Polly Fouracres, a local resident. It is at 7.30pm on Wednesday 20th November at Broad Town Village Hall. Visitors are welcome. For more information please contact Jane Rowe on 01793 731105 who also has a few tickets to the Barn Dance on Saturday 9th November.

HILMARTON MOVIOLA
The last film of the Autumn season. HYDE PARK ON HUDSON 12A Academy Award nominees Bill Murray and Laura Linney star in a historical tale that uniquely explores the all-too-human side of one of history’s iconic leaders. Blending literate wit and drama, Hyde Park on Hudson is directed by Roger Michell from a screenplay by Richard Nelson. In June 1939, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt (played by Mr. Murray) readies to host the King and Queen of England (Samuel West and Olivia Colman) for a weekend at the Roosevelt home at Hyde Park on Hudson, in upstate New York – marking the first-ever visit of a reigning British monarch to America. As Britain faces imminent war with Germany, the royals are desperately looking to FDR for U.S. support.
Just a reminder that I am here to help with information to (hopefully) solve problems and make your life a little easier.
