REVEREND ALISON WAY

Pastures new……

Over the last few weeks as well as all the usual round of activities, I have been attending to clearing out cupboards and contemplating how much stuff I have. It is frightening how one woman and her cat can fill a large 4 bed roomed house in six years! At one level most of the stuff doesn’t really matter. In our disposable society I could replace it relatively easily if I had sufficient funds. I admit there are some things of no obvious material value, associated with occasions and moments of life that I would be sad to part with. These things have huge sentimental value, but the associated memories are really more durable and lasting than the things in themselves!

What is of real value ultimately is not our ‘stuff’, but our relationships and love for one another deep from the heart of God. I am grateful for how many people across the communities have taken me into their homes, hearts and confidences over the past six years. I have learnt a huge amount in my time here about God’s love for us all, and I am grateful for all the kindnesses and hospitality I have received. I am also very grateful for all who have worked so hard to keep our four beautiful Churches a float in so many ways, particularly those willing to serve as Churchwardens and Parochial Church Council members.

For your information: I am off to be the priest-in-charge of ChristChurch South Nutfield in Surrey, which is in Southwark Diocese (and I will be licensed there on March 6^th). I will also be the area officer for Lay Mission and Ministry helping parishes across the Croydon Episcopal Area to deepen their discipleship and their involvement in the life and work of their local Church.

My farewell service here will be on 9^th Feb 2014 at 3pm in St Lawrence’s Church, Hilmarton, followed by a bring and share tea in the Church Hall. You would be most welcome. Thank you again for your support over the six years I have been your priest. As well as all my stuff (!), I will be taking many happy memories of this part of Wiltshire with me!

FAREWELL ALISON

It was with heavy hearts that we accepted the inevitable – that at some time Alison would move on to pastures new. Alison has poured her heart and soul into this Benefice and we know she is ready to widen her ministry and experiences. We wish her well and hope she enjoys all her new challenges. At least she will only have one PCC to contend with – not four! The last service with us is on Sunday 9^th Feb at 8am and the last service in the Benefice is on the same day at 3pm at Hilmarton followed by a take and share tea.

COFFEE MORNING

Hi Everyone, a happy new year to you all. The next time the Christ Church Coffee Shop opens will be on March 1^st for the annual pancake bonanza. There will of course be other delights to tempt you. It will be great to see as many of you as possible for your delectation, relaxation and conversation.

VILLAGE HALL

Broad Town Village Hall is managed by a very small group of dedicated people. To maintain the smooth running of the Hall, we meet every 6-8 weeks. The AGM will be held at 6.30pm on Tuesday 18^th March 2014, and if anybody would like to come along and join our committee they will be most welcome.

PARISH COUNCIL

It has been noted that parking in Horns Lane and Chapel Lane has become careless in the last month. This has caused difficulties for residents and affected rubbish collection. Please park tidily and consider others.

Dog fouling in Broad Town and Thornhill is again becoming a problem. Dog owners must, by law, pick up any mess made by their pet in a public place. This includes school playing fields, sports grounds and parks but also footpaths (including those across open fields), roads and roadside verges. Enforcement officers can issue on-the-spot fixed penalty notices and refer offenders for prosecution.

Parish Council meetings are held in the Village Hall on the second Monday of each month at 6.30pm.

At our January meeting, we discussed the resolutions to go forward to the vote at the 2014 annual meeting. This was followed by tea and some delicious desserts provided by the committee.

The date has changed for February’s meeting and will now be at the village hall at 7.30pm (doors open at 7.15) on Wednesday 26^th February. Details below.

‘Dementia- Hopes and Fears’ a talk by Dr Simon Manchip

The diagnosis and treatment of dementia explained.

Dr Manchip is a Consultant in Old Age Psychiatry for the Avon and Wiltshire Mental Health Partnership trust, working in Swindon and Wiltshire. He is also the National Dementia Advisor for the Order of St John’s Care Home Trust – a not for profit organisation that runs 74 care homes in England. His special interest is the management of behavioral problems in dementia, especially in care homes.

Talk will commence at 7.30pm until 8.30, followed by refreshments & questions

BROAD TOWN COMMUNITY LED PLANNING (CLP) GROUP

We are sorry that we have had to postpone our last two advertised meetings due to lack of any recent progress of the proposed Neighbourhood Plan. There is an Area Steering Group meeting for all the villages involved in the New-V Neighbourhood Area Plan arranged for Wednesday 12^th February in Purton. If there is any news as a result of the meeting we will of course keep you informed.

It is 2009. Aboard U.S. container ship Maersk Alabama, 145 miles off the Somali coast, Captain Richard Phillips (Tom Hanks) spots two suspicious looking skiffs heading at speed in his direction. When he radios for assistance however, he is advised only to inform his crew and ready his fire-hoses. Within minutes, a crew of Somali pirates have boarded and hijacked the unarmed freight vessel, taking Phillips and his men hostage.

As negotiations drag on and tensions rise, the relationship between Captain Phillips and the Somali pirate captain, Muse (Barkhad Abdi), takes centre stage as both men find themselves at the mercy of forces beyond their control.

This month I am writing again about the role of Carers. Did you know that it is estimated that more than 10% of the UK population are Carers? In the 2001 Census that was almost 2 million people. It is thought that there are many more people out there who are Carers, but who do not see themselves as having that role.

“In sickness and in health” is part of the marriage service and many people feel that their Caring role within the marriage is part of the marriage. This may be the way you feel, but the role is recognised by the authorities and they feel that all Carers should be recognised for their important role no matter what the circumstances.

Defining a Carer is difficult as “Caring” can take many forms. Basically “a Carer is someone who, without payment, provides help and support to a partner, child, relative, friend or neighbour who could not manage without their help. This could be due to age, physical or mental illness, substance misuse, eating disorder or disability” (Carer Support Wiltshire definition). Caring can take many forms and can include helping with personal things such as getting someone dressed, helping them move about or giving medicine. Caring also includes helping around the home with shopping, laundry, cleaning and cooking. A Carer can also help and support by filling in forms or managing money.

For people of working age, Carer’s allowance is the main benefit for Carers. If you look after someone who gets a disability benefit, for at least 35 hours each week, you could qualify. Carer’s Credit is available to people who provide care for a disabled person for 20 hours or more each week, where they do not currently receive Carer’s Allowance. It is a National Insurance credit which helps Carers build up qualifying years for the basic State Pension and additional State Pension.

Finance and money are often a concern. Take the opportunity to have a benefits check to make sure you are claiming everything that either the Carer or the Cared for are entitled to such as: PIP or Attendance Allowance, Carer’s Allowance or Carers Credits for the Carer, Council tax discounts and discounts on fuel bills if you receive certain benefits.

For Carers who are of Pensionable age, Carers Allowance is not payable, but there are one off benefits which you may be entitled to. Contact me for more details.

Carers Assessments are a way of identifying your needs as a Carer. They look at your role and how being a Carer affects you; how much Caring you can realistically do and what extra help you may need.

The Carers Emergency Card is an initiative run by Wiltshire Council. It will identify you as a Carer and in the event of an accident or emergency, contact will be made with those you care for to ensure their safety and wellbeing. It is a credit card size to fit in a wallet or purse.

Carers are entitled to a Carers Library Card which entitles you to borrow books from Libraries for six weeks instead of the usual three. Carers and those they care for may also apply for the Home Library Service. This service is provided by volunteers who work with you and library staff to deliver books, talking books and DVDs fortnightly or monthly to the Carer's home. Arrangements are well under way, with site, sound systems, power, stage and even a couple of artists booked. But, there’s still plenty to do, with catering, stalls and attractions, security, car parking, finding sponsors and choosing top quality entertainment all high on the agenda. Your committee will be spending hours in local and not so local hostelries to seek out and deliver the best of a variety of musical genres on the night. Tough work, but we are dedicated. On the subject of sponsorship, this is always one of the hardest nuts to crack and we have been lucky to have such generous financial help in the past. We are always looking to add to our portfolio of sponsors, so if you are a local business looking to put something back into the community in return for local publicity, please get in touch to discuss options. LETTER FROM AMERICA

Hi, I’m Niamh Rawlins and I’ve lived in the village my whole life. I’m currently studying at Lipscomb University in the USA on a soccer scholarship, and I have been presented with the chance to serve on a short term mission trip. I will be travelling to El Salvador with my soccer team from March 14^th – March 21^st. Our group will be teaming up with the indigenous staff of Sports Outreach (a non-profit organisation) where we will work side by side and serve the local communities. We will be spending time with students at a local government school, children at a local orphanage for those with special needs, and members of a local slum community. Preparation for this year’s trip involves each participant raising funds of $1700 (approximately £1039). I realise that the economic climate at this time is not great, but if you are able to consider supporting me and making a donation that would be amazing. Any contribution you make is tax-deductible, and no amount is too small. Your support would be greatly appreciated. If you would like to contribute financially there are 2 ways to do so.

SPINAL INJURIES ASSOCIATION GREAT BRITISH FISH AND CHIP SUPPER – FRIDAY 16^TH MAY 2014

Want to eat Fish and Chips, while raising money for charity? Hold a fish and chip supper on Friday 16^th May 2014 whilst raising awareness of spinal cord injury and supporting SIA’s vital services. You can hold a fish and chip supper in your own home, at work or hold a larger supper at your local community centre.

SIA will provide a fundraising pack containing hints and tips, recipes, invitations and donation envelopes. By inviting 8 friends and asking them to donate an additional £5.00 means you will raise at least £40.00 from your supper but we will also give you additional fundraising ideas to raise even more money for SIA.

In 2014 SIA is celebrating its 40^th anniversary and so we want to make the batter matter and raise £25,000 from everyone holding suppers. Last year we raised £12,500 from the suppers.

The money raised from the suppers will help the Spinal Injuries Association offer support to individuals who become paralysed and their families, from the moment a spinal injury occurs, and for the rest of their lives by providing services and publications which enable and encourage paralysed people to rebuild lives after spinal cord injury.

Every year in the UK over 1,000 people experience a spinal cord injury and there are an estimated 40,000 spinal cord injured people in the UK alone.

Community Fundraising Manager, Elizabeth Wright, says, “The Fish and Chip Supper is a wonderful opportunity for a great evening with friends and family. We are also encouraging people who work to hold a Fish and Chip Lunch in their work places to raise even more funds. You may be even a local community group wanting to run a fun evening with your group.

THE GUILD OF WILTSHIRE ARTISTS

Run workshops at the Village Hall on every third Saturday of the month from 10am to 4pm. All are welcome including painters who are beginners.
