FAREWELL TO REV ALISON
The school said their “Farewell” to Alison at assembly on Friday 7th Feb when they presented her with various cards and a beautiful framed photo of the Church which had been taken by one of the teachers. They asked that she keep in touch and thanked her for all the work she had done in the school.
On Sunday 9th Feb all the congregations gathered in Hilmarton Church for Alison’s last service with us. We had a very lively service in which we gave thanks for all the work done within the Church. Lay Pastoral Assistants to Cleaners, Gardeners to the PCC were all remembered. We sang several of Alison’s favourite hymns and the rendition of “Mine Eyes have seen the Glory” was a sight to behold with everyone (including 10 visiting Clergy) energetically waving flags. After the service we congregated in the Church Hall for tea and presentations. Alison was given a set of gloves in ecclesiastical colours, a framed photo of all the Churches in the Benefice and a cheque which she is going to spend on a new tablet and other things.
We will miss her lively and forthright manner, her sense of fun and her cooking (especially coffee meringues). Her lack of gardening skill was well known and so was her depth of understanding of her congregations.
May God go with you Alison and we know you will enjoy your new challenges in your new Parish.
“Those who travel with God always reach their destination”
THANK YOU
Message from Rev Alison Way:
Thank you so much for the very VERY generous presents and the fantastic send off. I will be using some of the money to buy a tablet computer. As I said on Sunday there will always be a piece of my heart in this special part of North Wiltshire. With love in Christ, Alison Way

COFFEE MORNING
Hi Everyone, Christ Church Coffee Shop opens on March 1st for the annual pancake bonanza. There will of course be other delights to tempt you. It will be great to see as many of you as possible for your delectation, relaxation and conversation.
LOST
Please does anyone have the pair of brass vases from the Church? We are missing one pair since Epiphany. We were wondering whether someone had taken flowers home in them and not got them back to the Church yet.
SPENDING THE FRIENDS ACCOUNT
The PCC is aware that some people have moaned that the Church has not spent the Friends money so we thought you would like an update.
We have now met with the architect and discussed the West wall of the Church. It has been allowed to dry for the time allocated but is still not as dry as we would like it – we know this year has been exceptional. So the architect has been asked to write to Salisbury to see if we can repoint the wall with the correct lime mortar and then leave it exposed. Salisbury had originally said that we had to replaster the wall.
The rest of the walls are now dry enough that they can be redecorated.
The other things we are investigating are the installation of a toilet and a better sound system.
FOOD BANK
We would like to thank all who contribute to the Swindon food bank. We are well aware that at the moment the food bank is helping more people than ever.
The organisers have now added some non-food items to the list – soap, toothpaste, shower gel, bubble bath, shampoo and talc.
VILLAGE HALL
The Village Hall is managed by a very small group of dedicated people. To maintain the smooth running of the Hall, we meet every 6-8 weeks. The AGM will be held at 6.30pm on Tuesday 18th March 2014, and if anybody would like to come along and join our committee they will be most welcome.
The Village Hall is a great asset to our community with many activities being carried out there. If you would like to use the village hall at any time please either go to the AGM or contact Nigel Crocker.
PARISH COUNCIL
A reminder that all Agenda and Minutes are published here each month: http://www.broad-town.co.uk, in the Parish Council section.
Thornhill is not closed due to flooding or fallen trees, but due to a massive hole, making the road impassable. This is not the little hole, which appeared some weeks ago.
The PC has received an application for a Solar Farm at Goldborough Farm. We have raised no objection to this.
BROAD TOWN COMMUNITY LED PLANNING (CLP) GROUP
There have been some months of uncertainty on progress of the proposed Neighbourhood Plan for Broad Town and the six other villages involved. The stage we are at is that a list of different “options” has been prepared (by a joint working group from the CLPG and the Parish Council) about the use of land and related matters, such as parking. The draft options have been prepared from the surveys that were carried out last year, from the Parish Plan and some ideas from the group. The expectation was that the options would be professionally analysed, together with views from further detailed consultation, to make absolutely sure that they represented the views of the people of Broad Town and could then be used to form policies to be put forward for the Neighbourhood Plan. We have now heard that there is insufficient funding for full professional input and that any additional consultation or analysis must be carried out locally. We therefore plan to hold a meeting on Friday 7th March at the Village Hall from 8.15 p.m. to 9.30 p.m. to discuss how this can be achieved. This meeting will definitely go ahead! Everyone is welcome to either join in the discussion or just listen in while enjoying a drink from the bar.
Please contact us if you would like to go onto our mailing list on lorraine@mrsbillis.co.uk. Would you like paper copies of documents if you don’t have access to e-mail?
Give Lorraine a call on 731188. More information is on our Community Forum on www.broad-town.co.uk or from Common Places www.New-V.co.uk.
BUSY BEES
We meet in Bushton Village Hall on second and fourth Wednesdays 1.45 to 2.45pm. We welcome all babies and toddlers and their parents or carers and any other family visitors who happen to be around at the time. Do come for a coffee, a chat, and a play. Plenty of parking and lots of room to play.
Please contact Kim Gough on kim.gough@rocketmail.com or on 07850933344. We look forward to meeting you.

Dr. Ryan Stone (Sandra Bullock) is a brilliant medical engineer on her first shuttle mission, with veteran astronaut Matt Kowalski (George Clooney) in command of his last flight before retiring. But on a seemingly routine spacewalk, disaster strikes. The shuttle is destroyed, leaving Stone and Kowalsky completely alone - tethered to nothing but each other and spiralling out into the blackness. IMDB

PROSPECT HOSPICE BOX COLLECTION IN BROAD TOWN
Since my appeal in the December Newsletter two volunteers to take up home collection boxes have come forward and this is most appreciated.
Prospect Hospice is a charity dear to the hearts of many local people for the care it gives in the community as well as in the Hospice.
For the wonderful service it gives it relies upon its own fund raising resources to raise a required £4.3million annually for its running costs.
If you feel you are able to contribute, even in a small way, to this most worthy of charitable causes by having a COLLECTION BOX for your “odd change” at home, please just contact me, JANICE GRIFFIN of 51 Broad Town on 01793 731424 (email: j.griffin7@btinternet.com) and I will arrange to add you to my list of donors and provide you with a collection box. Thank you.
IRAQI VISITOR TO TELL OF PEACE
Vital work rebuilding villages and livelihoods in northern Iraq will be brought to life in Salisbury on Wednesday 19 March when a visitor from Christian Aid partner organisation REACH shares stories of the journey from brutal violence to hope for the future.
Christian Aid is inviting everyone to hear him speak at Fearless – a Life without Fear 6-8.30pm St Francis Church Hall, Beatrice Rd, Salisbury, SP1 3PN where you will also be able to enjoy a light supper and meet staff and supporters from across the region.
REACH - which stands for Rehabilitation, Education & Community Health - is an organisation which not only helps communities recover by assisting with infrastructure and economic opportunities but also empowers them to lobby government and supports the setting up of community councils. These councils allow communities to establish priorities together and collaborate on projects. The event is free, donations welcome. RSVP re catering by email kmusgrave@christian-aid.org or call 01454 415923.
BROAD TOWN BIG GIG -SATURDAY 30TH AUGUST 2014
This month’s activities have mainly focussed around the music, with some exciting progress made and more bands booked, but there’s still plenty to do. We are hoping to increase the size of the second stage to better accommodate bands and enhance the visual impact.
The chosen national charities for 2014 are SSAFA (http://www.ssafa.org.uk) and Goldenhar (http://www.goldenhar.org.uk) but as always a large proportion of any surplus will go to local good causes too.
On the finance side, as you’d expect everything is that little more expensive than 2012, so we anticipate a price increase as we haven’t changed the cost of tickets since 2010. However, we know money is tight for everyone, so you will be able to buy your tickets at 2010 prices provided you purchase early – more details next month. And whilst on the subject of finances, we are always looking to add to our portfolio of sponsors, so if you are a local business looking to put something back into the community in return for local publicity, please get in touch to discuss options. Alternatively, perhaps if your employer is willing to assist with sponsorship, let us know. Any suggestions, ideas or offers of sponsorship, please email Chris (vicechairman@broadtownshow.co.uk). www.broadtownbiggig.co.uk / www.facebook.com/broadtownbiggig
SPINAL INJURIES ASSOCIATION GREAT BRITISH FISH AND CHIP SUPPER – FRIDAY 16TH MAY 2014
Want to eat Fish and Chips, while raising money for charity? Hold a fish and chip supper on Friday 16th May 2014 whilst raising awareness of spinal cord injury and supporting SIA’s vital services. You can hold a fish and chip supper in your own home, at work or hold a larger supper at your local community centre.
SIA will provide a fundraising pack containing hints and tips, recipes, invitations and donation envelopes. By inviting 8 friends and asking them to donate an additional £5.00 means you will raise at least £40.00 from your supper but we will also give you additional fundraising ideas to raise even more money for SIA.
In 2014 SIA is celebrating its 40th anniversary and so we want to make the batter matter and raise £25,000 from everyone holding suppers. Last year we raised £12,500 from the suppers.
The money raised from the suppers will help the Spinal Injuries Association offer support to individuals who become paralysed and their families, from the moment a spinal injury occurs, and for the rest of their lives by providing services and publications which enable and encourage paralysed people to rebuild lives after spinal cord injury.
Every year in the UK over 1,000 people experience a spinal cord injury and there are an estimated 40,000 spinal cord injured people in the UK alone.
Community Fundraising Manager, Elizabeth Wright, says, “The Fish and Chip Supper is a wonderful opportunity for a great evening with friends and family. We are also encouraging people who work to hold a Fish and Chip Lunch in their work places to raise even more funds. You may be even a local community group wanting to run a fun evening with your group. For more information or request a fundraising pack call Elizabeth Wright on 0845 071 4350 or email fundraising@siafishandchips.co.uk or visit www.siafishandchips.co.uk
