THE CONQUEST OF LOVE
A story is told of a girl in Luther’s time who had been taught to think of God only with dread, as a terrible judge. In her stern home the name of God was mentioned only to terrify and frighten her. But one day in her father’s printing-office she picked up a scrap of paper, and found on it the first words of the verse…”God so loved the world that He gave –“. The remaining words were torn off; but even in this fragment there was a new revelation to her. It told her that God loved the world, loved it well enough to give it a present. What did He give? She did not know but it was enough for her to know that He loved the world to give it something. The new thought brought great joy to her. It changed all her ideas of God. She learned to think of Him as one who loved her as a friend, ready to give her rich gifts, and this brightened and changed her life.
The present He gave was His Son.

PARISH COUNCIL
· Please note the date and time of the next Parish Council meeting has been changed to 7th April at 18:00
· There have been successful meetings with the Highways Engineer to explore improvements in road safety with a view to reduce speeding within the village
· The parish Council and CLPG are working very hard to scope the future planning for the village. Please take an interest otherwise decisions may be made and options put forward which do not represent your views
· Whiteway in Thornhill is to be closed for the foreseeable future
· Dauntsey Bank is now closed for up to six months
· We have a problem with dog fouling being left by owners. This is leading to abortions in livestock and can cause blindness in children. We are sure the owners who are not removing their dog's mess would not want someone else's dog mess to cause blindness in their families. So the simple answer is: be a responsible dog owner and take away any mess from wherever your dog fouls
BROAD TOWN COMMUNITY LED PLANNING (CLP) GROUP
Thank you to those of you who were able to join us at our meeting in March. Since then there has been another meeting of the Area Steering Group for the NEW-V Neighbourhood Plan that includes all the villages that make up our Neighbourhood Area. The work of analysing all the Options that might be included in the Neighbourhood Plan is continuing in all the Villages and we too are doing our best to put forward a viewpoint that meets our local needs. Although there is no more news to bring you at the moment, there is plenty to read about neighbourhood planning in Wiltshire on the Wiltshire Council website: www.wiltshire.gov.uk/planninganddevelopment/planningpolicy/neighbourhoodplanning.
Please contact us if you would like to go onto our mailing list on lorraine@mrsbillis.co.uk. Would you like paper copies of documents if you don’t have access to e-mail?
Give Lorraine a call on 731188. More information is on our Community Forum on www.broad-town.co.uk or from Common Places www.New-V.co.uk .
WILTSHIRE MOVIOLA
The Butler (12A) 132 mins Saturday 12th April. Hilmarton Church Hall
Cecil Gaines (Forest Whitaker) is a sharecropper’s son who’s served seven American presidents over three decades as the butler at The Whitehouse. From a frightened little boy on a cotton plantation who witnesses the brutalisation of his mother and the murder of his father, the story traces his quietly determined rise through the ranks of domestic servitude along with the dramatic changes that swept American society following the Second World War - from the civil rights movement to Vietnam and beyond.
Inspired by the life of real Whitehouse butler, Eugene Allen, the film also features an all-star supporting cast that includes Oprah Winfrey as Cecil’s wife Gloria, Robin Williams as Dwight Eisenhower, John Cusack as Richard Nixon, Alan Rickman as Ronald Reagan, and Jane Fonda as Nancy Reagan.

BROAD TOWN WI
Our speaker in February was Dr Simon Manchip and his talk was entitled ‘Dementia- Hopes and Fears’. His talk was very informative and surprisingly optimistic considering the subject. Dr Manchip described the symptoms of dementia, short term memory problems, loss of recognition, deterioration of speech, apathy and loss of appetite due to loss of sense of smell. Risk factors include smoking, high blood pressure, obesity, irregular heart rhythm (Atrial fibrillation), high cholesterol and Diabetes Mellitus. It is possible to reduce risk of Dementia by 40% if all of the possible risks factors are reduced.
Protective factors include: regular daily exercise, a small amount of alcohol daily (1-2 units alcohol/day for women, 2-3 units for men) and a Mediterranean diet, which includes mostly fresh vegetables, fruit and fish and is low in animal fat such as red and processed meat, cheese and other dairy products.
Early recognition allows patients to put financial affairs in order, make a will, arrange power of attorney, and make lifestyle choices. The government is working towards more rapid diagnosis and more community support.
The Meeting was attended by 2 local counsellors aiming to make Wiltshire “Dementia Friendly” along with Wiltshire County Council who are “Dementia Aware”. Wootton Bassett has been chosen as a pilot site. A memory café runs monthly for people with Dementia. Opportunities exist for locals to become involved in their campaign and a tool kit information pack and “forget me not badge” are available. There is also a research trial at Kingshill, Victoria Centre underway with opportunities for patients and families to take part.
Our March meeting was our AGM followed by a game of skittles.
In April we are having a music quiz, from classical to pop and TV and film theme tunes etc. If you would like to join us, come along to Broad Town Village Hall, on Wednesday 16th April at 7.30pm.

Clutter, Gardens and Repairs!
There always seem to be jobs to do in and around the house, whether it’s tidying the garden, house maintenance or de-cluttering. Are you dreading the arrival of spring and all it entails with tidying up the garden? Finding a trustworthy and reliable trade’s person to help with these tasks isn’t always easy. Where do you look? There are hundreds of tradespeople listed in phone directory, but who are they? Are they reliable? Are they trustworthy? Some answers may be:
1. Use someone who comes recommended by family, friends or a local group.
2. Age UK and Wiltshire Council have trusted traders lists, I can give you details.
3. Ask for references or evidence of previous jobs they have completed.
4. Make sure they provide a business or home address and phone number to contact them, not just a mobile phone number.
5. Don’t respond to people who casually offer services at your door step – they may not be genuine.
If you’re de-cluttering your home or replacing large items of furniture etc, disposal can be a problem. It won’t necessarily fit into your recycle bins!
1. ‘Freecycle’ is a free online service where you can advertise and give away your unwanted items and the items are collected by the recipient.
2. There are a number of independent agencies that can carry out repairs to the home inside and out. They can and will remove large items of furniture from your home for a small charge.
3. Wiltshire Council will remove large furniture items from your doorstep for a fee, reduced if you are on means tested benefits.
4. ‘Waste Not Want Not’ will collect large items of furniture that can be resold in their Chippenham shop. They don’t charge for collection.
5. Dorothy House and British Heart Foundation have a free collection service for most furniture and electrical goods which they will sell in their high street shops.
If you need further information on any of the above, or information on any other matter, give me a call on 07557 110414 or email rwbcrickladegnc@communityfirst.org.uk
SPINAL INJURIES ASSOCIATION GREAT BRITISH FISH AND CHIP SUPPER – FRIDAY 16TH MAY 2014
Want to eat Fish and Chips, while raising money for charity? Hold a fish and chip supper on Friday 16th May 2014 whilst raising awareness of spinal cord injury and supporting SIA’s vital services. You can hold a fish and chip supper in your own home, at work or hold a larger supper at your local community centre.
SIA will provide a fundraising pack containing hints and tips, recipes, invitations and donation envelopes. By inviting 8 friends and asking them to donate an additional £5.00 means you will raise at least £40.00 from your supper but we will also give you additional fundraising ideas to raise even more money for SIA.
In 2014 SIA is celebrating its 40th anniversary and so we want to make the batter matter and raise £25,000 from everyone holding suppers. Last year we raised £12,500 from the suppers.
The money raised from the suppers will help the Spinal Injuries Association offer support to individuals who become paralysed and their families, from the moment a spinal injury occurs, and for the rest of their lives by providing services and publications which enable and encourage paralysed people to rebuild lives after spinal cord injury.
Every year in the UK over 1,000 people experience a spinal cord injury and there are an estimated 40,000 spinal cord injured people in the UK alone.
Community Fundraising Manager, Elizabeth Wright, says, “The Fish and Chip Supper is a wonderful opportunity for a great evening with friends and family. We are also encouraging people who work to hold a Fish and Chip Lunch in their work places to raise even more funds. You may be even a local community group wanting to run a fun evening with your group. For more information or request a fundraising pack call Elizabeth Wright on 0845 071 4350 or email fundraising@siafishandchips.co.uk or visit www.siafishandchips.co.uk
