“OVER AND OUT”

A Farnborough school teacher asked a seven-year-old boy during a religious education class “Why do we say ‘Amen’ at the end of our prayers?” After some thought the boy replied “It’s a special way of saying ‘over and out’ to God.” Which, when you come to think, is a lovely way of saying “So be it” – and then trustfully leaving it all to Him.

We have interviewed one candidate to be our new Vicar but the panel decided that the lady was not suitable. We will not be advertising again ‘til probably September. So now we are saying “over and out” to God that the right person will answer the next advert.

PETS ARE INVITED 6th JULY

Anyone with a pet is invited to bring them to a special service in Christ Church, Broad Town on 6th July at 11.00am.

Please have dogs on leads, cats in baskets, chickens in cages and other pets in their proper secure containers. If you do not feel that your pet will behave or is too big (i.e. horses) then you may bring a picture of your pet. We look forward to a lively special service.

THANK YOU

Betty Bastin would like to thank friends and neighbours for supporting the plant stall at the bottom of her drive in aid of Broad Town School fete.

She was saddened by the petty theft of the ‘Honesty Jar’ contents overnight on June 14th. Shame on you whoever you are.

PARISH COUNCIL

We are very frustrated that our speeding concerns have been ignored and not taken as seriously as we believe they should. Speeding within the village was raised as an 'issue' with Wiltshire council in 2009 as a direct result of the weight of your responses in the Parish Plan questionnaire.

Lots of people have been asking about the road closures, these are the dates we have currently been given: Dauntsey Lock to reopen 7th August 2014

Marlborough road closed from April 2015. Skew Bridge closed from December 2015. All closures are subject to assessment meeting 4 - 5 months in advance of closure. These are public meetings.

There has been no application for an election, so this means the PC will have to co-opt another councillor. If you are interested or want an informal chat about being a councillor please give any one of us a call or talk to Roy our Clerk (numbers available on the Broad Town website).

BROAD TOWN COMMUNITY LED PLANNING (CLP) GROUP

It is nice to be able to report that there is ongoing progress by the joint working group that consists of members of the CLPG and the Parish Council. At our meetings we are continuing to look at all the draft options relating to Broad Town that are based upon the views from previous consultation events. We will also start to consider the overall aims and objectives of our section of the proposed Neighbourhood Plan for our area, as well as planning how to maintain involvement by everyone in the community. We are attending the Area Steering Group meetings too, where we are still trying to request further resources to support the Neighbourhood Plan process– busy times! We will of course keep you informed of progress through this Newsletter and our Community Forum and please keep looking out for the invitations to our update meetings.

Please contact us if you would like to go onto our mailing list on lorraine@mrsbillis.co.uk. More information is on our Community Forum on www.broad-town.co.uk or from project managers Common Places www.New-V.co.uk .

BROAD TOWN BIG GIG -SATURDAY 30TH AUGUST 2014

Thanks to all who came to the Little Gig at the Crown – great to see a large contingent from the village make the effort. A shame about the storm towards the end, but it didn’t spoil a great night and hopefully it wetted your appetite for the main event (pun intended!).

If you are reading this before midnight on the 30th June and you haven’t bought your tickets, buy now to get the discounted price. From 1 July the ticket price will be £17.50 per adult and £7.50 12-17 years inclusive.

We are working on the final details for the 30th August, with additions to the food and non-music entertainment being negotiated. The line-up is finalised and we’re very excited with the quality of the entertainment we have in store for you – check it out on our website.

If you want to get involved with the Big Gig but haven’t had the chance so far, we will be looking for volunteers to help before and on the day. If your organisation is thinking of asking for a donation of funds from the Big Gig, then contact us to see how you can give something back – preference will be given to groups that reciprocate by helping us. Contact Andrew on 731472 and we can find ways to get you involved.

WW1 COMMEMORATION

On 4th August Christ Church, Broad Town will be open from 9.am to 6.pm for anyone to call in and remember. Whether it is members of your own family, members of the community or just all those who did not come back is up to you. There will be candles available if you wish to light one. There will be no formal service, just quiet for you to think. The files about the people from Broad Town will be available to look at, articles about the War Graves Commission and other items. The length of time you stay is entirely up to you. All the churches in the benefice will be open during that day.

Evening Vigil will start at 8pm that evening at Hilmarton. There will be a short service; and for the rest of the evening people are welcome to come and pray. The vigil will finish with the last candle being extinguished at 11pm. That does not mean that people have to stay the whole 3hours. We expect people to drift in and out quietly all evening.

On the weekend of 12,13,14 September there will be a flower display in St Bartholomew’s Church, Royal Wootton Bassett depicting organisations as they were in 1914.

Just a reminder that I am here to help with information to (hopefully) solve problems and make your life a little easier. Please call me,

Ellen Blacker on 07557 110414 or email me at rwbcrickladegnc@communityfirst.org.uk

JOIN RIDE AND STRIDE 2014

This year the sponsored Cycle, Walk, Jog, Horse-ride (however you fancy travelling except by car!) around Wiltshire Churches and Chapels will take place on Saturday 13th September between 10am and 6pm. Sponsor money raised will be shared between your chosen church and the Wiltshire Historic Churches Trust. Many churches are open for refreshments including Broad Town and some have toilet facilities. I have a list of these churches. If you feel energetic and would like to participate, further details and sponsorship forms are available from Carolyn on 852754.

ITALIAN EVENING

How do you fancy an evening in Rome or Venice or Florence? Can’t get there? We have the next best thing for you. An Italian evening in the Village Hall. You can imagine yourself where-ever you like as you eat a 3 course meal and listen to the singing of Supanova. There will be good food, great singing and wonderful conversation.

THE GUILD OF WILTSHIRE ARTISTS
