PEACE
Such a small word with such a vast meaning. Plenty has been said on the topic so why is it so hard to find and maintain.
The first sign of war is the presence of abusive language – an African proverb.
Violence will never bring about lasting peace – Martin Luther King.
True peace is not just the absence of conflict but the presence of justice – Mahatma Gandhi.
Blessed are the peacemakers for they will be called the children of God – Jesus Christ.
Peace comes from understanding one another, not from reaching agreements – an Arab proverb.
If you excuse, forgive and practice patience, so will Allah, who forgives you - Quran
August 4th is a significant date for all of us as it is the date of the start of the Great War. This name implied that there were to be no more such global conflicts. Unfortunately we know that that was not the fact. We also know that since the end of the 2nd WW there has only been 1 year with no conflict anywhere in the world. That is such a horrible fact. So if we want peace let us start in our own little corner by praying for and trying to understand our world.
FRIENDS OF CHRIST CHURCH
Thank you to all who continue to contribute to the Friends of Christ Church Account. You have just paid for the refurbishment of the consumer unit and for the electrics to be brought up to modern safety standards. Some extra sockets have also been put into the Church.
We have also been told that the west wall is now dry enough and we have to have it replastered. So we are now in the process of acquiring 3 quotes for the work before Salisbury will give permission for us to go ahead.

PARISH COUNCIL
Community Area Transport Group (CATG) is the local body which is responsible for transport issues such as speed limits. The PC has finally gained CATG approval for less than we asked for, but a small victory nonetheless: a reduction from 40 to 30 of the small section of 40 from Broadacres to the school. In addition, some traffic calming measures (red gutters and removal of the centre white line) have been proposed by Wiltshire Council, and this will now go ahead, helped by a small Parish Council contribution of £750. The breakneck speed of Wiltshire Council and Balfour Beatty activities means that none of this will happen imminently, but it will happen.
We still have a Parish Council vacancy, which should be filled as soon as is practicable. Contact the Clerk if you can spare the time and dedication which the PC requires.
The Parish Council and Community-Led Planning Group are continuing their collaboration in the PC/CLPG Joint Working Group to progress our section of the Neighbourhood Plan. The NP, when complete, will inform and guide planning officials when making planning and land-use decisions. It is therefore an important document which can give Broad Town protection against unwelcome planning applications. The PC has approved a small assistance to this process by paying the Village Hall hire cost, if and when required for Joint Working Group meetings.
There have been comments about the quality of work performed by the new contractor who was employed only a few months ago to cut the grass on the playing field at Redhills. The Clerk will perform a site visit and contact the contractor if it is thought that there is an issue.
The seat should be returned and reinstalled at the playing field soon. Clerk to investigate location and fixings.
Complaints have been received about the corner of the playing field which backs on to Broadacres. It has a large quantity of dumped rubble, which has made cutting the grass impossible. As a result, it is now very untidy. Clerk will investigate contractors who could remove it, and likely costs in doing so.
The dog mess problem rumbles on, particularly through Thornhill. Rather than hiding it in the grass on the verge, dog owners now flick it into the road, where it may be more visible but is more likely to be trodden in. Picking it up in bags, which are then left hanging on the nearest fence, is just as bad. Both now attract stringent penalties, including substantial fines, if perpetrators are caught. Please remove it completely.
BROAD TOWN COMMUNITY LED PLANNING (CLP) GROUP
It was interesting to hear about the progress of the other villages in the NEW-V Neighbourhood Plan at the Area Steering Group Meeting held recently. Some of the Villages have nearly completed their policies and objectives for inclusion in the Neighbourhood Plan and the Group is aiming to have a NEW-V draft document available for comment in the autumn that will include all the villages’ policies. On our Joint Working Group we are doing our best to keep to the timetable. The amount of work to be completed means that the CLPG meetings are on hold for the time being, however we will continue to publish information on our Community Forum and we can send information direct to you if you would like to go onto our mailing list.
Please contact us if you would like to go onto our mailing list on lorraine@mrsbillis.co.uk. More information is on our Community Forum on www.broad-town.co.uk and from project managers Common Places www.New-V.co.uk .
THE FOUR WAYS COMMUNITY PUB
Broad Town Village Hall is run by Broad Town Social Club: a small, unpaid committee of villagers of all ages and backgrounds – we always need more event ideas, supporters, and of course people to have fun participating in our activities.
BAR EVERY FRIDAY 8pm-late. You don't have to be a member: anyone can pop in for a drink and a chat. Free to play every Friday night: official pub pool table, table tennis, table football, darts; listen to your favourite tunes by bringing your CDs or hooking your phone/mp3 player up to our pro 4-speaker sound system. Please note: we will be CLOSED on Friday 29th August.
Big Gig Bar – Saturday 30th August: Volunteers needed: no experience necessary!
The audience at your annual village event are a thirsty bunch, and we’re seeking around a dozen helpers to keep the beer and cider flowing and help us raise funds for our activities in 2015. Each helper would only have to serve for a maximum of two hours (either in one chunk or two separate shifts if you prefer) and you’d be richly rewarded in drinks for your efforts! Please let us know ASAP, as we’ve had to turn people down in previous years through being over-subscribed. Volunteers should be 18+, though 16+ with verifiable paid retail/catering experience will also be considered. Come along any Friday or Sunday before the end of August; or contact: Matt on 01793 731499 • email fourwaysbroadtown@gmail.com • LIKE us on Facebook at www.facebook.com/FourWaysBroadTown
BINGO EVERY SUNDAY – open from 7.15pm; eyes down 8pm; last ball 9.45pm
The bar is open till 8pm to non-players thirsting for a swift half! Full bar plus tea, coffee, cappuccino and Aero hot chocolate always available. Players especially welcome from outside Broad Town: if you’ve got friends from other bingo nights itching to play – tell them where we are, or bring them along. We already have regulars from Purton, Bushton, Wroughton, RWB, Devizes… More players = bigger prizes! Supporting your local non-profit-making bingo venue helps us grow: unlike most commercial games, every pound you flutter is ALWAYS returned to our players in cash winnings. Never played Bingo before? Doesn't matter: come and have a try!
BROAD TOWN WI
Our July meeting was held at the White Horse Pub at Winterbourne Bassett. We took advantage of the lovely warm evening by walking from Broad Hinton Church, across the fields to Winterbourne Bassett where we were met by some non-walkers. There were twenty one of us in all. We chatted over a few drinks and most of us enjoyed a meal. We then made the return journey across the fields as the light was fading and the sky was tinged red with the setting sun.
In August we have our summer outing to Highclere House (better known as Downton Abbey).
In September we will be back in Broad Town Village hall at 7.30pm, with a members meeting when we will be sharing good books we have read, nice places to eat, recommended places to holiday, interesting places to go for a day out etc.
We are a friendly bunch so if you would like to join us and would like more information please phone Jane on 01793 731105.
WW1 COMMEMORATION
On 4th August Christ Church, Broad Town will be open from 9.am to 6.pm for anyone to call in and remember. Whether it is members of your own family, members of the community or just all those who did not come back is up to you. There will be candles available if you wish to light one. There will be no formal service, just quiet for you to think. The files about the people from Broad Town will be available to look at, articles about the War Graves Commission and other items. The length of time you stay is entirely up to you. All the churches in the benefice will be open during that day.
Evening Vigil will start at 8pm that evening at Hilmarton. There will be a short service; and for the rest of the evening people are welcome to come and pray. The vigil will finish with the last candle being extinguished at 11pm. That does not mean that people have to stay the whole 3hours. We expect people to drift in and out quietly all evening.
On the weekend of 12,13,14 September there will be a flower display in St Bartholomew’s Church, Royal Wootton Bassett depicting organisations as they were in 1914.
Also on 4th Aug Wootton Bassett Museum will be open with the entire space taken up with a display about the war. Teas and coffees will be served with the proceeds going to the Royal British Legion.
BROAD TOWN BIG GIG -SATURDAY 30TH AUGUST 2014
This is probably the last Big Gig newsletter item before the day itself. The good news is we have unprecedented demand for tickets, so if you are planning on coming and haven’t bought yet, do so ASAP before we sell out – we don’t want to be turning away villagers at the gate again! As well as ticket sales online, we will have ticket outlets at:
Broad Hinton Post Office, Cloth of Gold, RWB, Bassett Books, RWB, Sound Knowledge, Marlborough and Holmes Music, Swindon
Further details are attached to this newsletter, but we think we have the best line-up of artists ever and have expanded the food and non-musical entertainment that little bit more than previous years – to keep the energy levels up you can choose from BBQ, Curry, Pizza and Cakes, plus to quench your thirst there will be the extensive bar (including real ales and ciders) and gourmet coffee and tea. When you fancy a stretch of the legs, treat yourself to a traditional fairground ride, or peruse the variety of stalls and attractions. Finally, we have a spectacular laser show for the closing acts. Keep an eye on the website / facebook for more detail over the next month.
Gates open at 3pm, the Mid West Big Band at 3:30pm followed by constant music over two enhanced stages. We’ve put in an order for dry and sunny weather so it’s going to be a cracker. See you all there!
IMPORTANT: We do need your help to put up the marquees – we aim to do this on Sunday 24th August 13:00 onwards, but this may change according to the weather forecast. If you are available to help that weekend, please let Andrew know (secretary@broadtownshow.co.uk or 731472) so we can contact you should the plans change.

BROAD TOWN DOG OWNERS
If you would like to join other dog owners and their dogs for a social walk in the local area we will be meeting on Sunday 10th August at 9.45am for a 10am walk. Please meet at the Village Hall car park. We will be out for around an hour or so and the walk will include stiles and cross country walking.
Please keep dogs on a lead until they have got to know each other. All dogs (and owners!) are very welcome - if your dog needs extra space from others please let us know on the day and we will advise the group. If the group is successful we hope to make it a monthly meet. Any questions please call or e-mail Annette on 07974 763645 annette.moore@live.co.uk
BUSY BEES
We meet in Bushton Village Hall on second and fourth Wednesdays 1.45 to 2.45pm. We welcome all babies and toddlers and their parents or carers and any other family visitors who happen to be around at the time. Do come for a coffee, a chat, and a play. Plenty of parking and lots of room to play.
Please contact Kim Gough on kim.gough@rocketmail.com or on 07850933344. We look forward to meeting you.
JOIN RIDE AND STRIDE 2014
This year the sponsored Cycle, Walk, Jog, Horse-ride (however you fancy travelling except by car!) around Wiltshire Churches and Chapels will take place on Saturday 13th September between 10am and 6pm. Sponsor money raised will be shared between your chosen church and the Wiltshire Historic Churches Trust. Many churches are open for refreshments including Broad Town and some have toilet facilities. I have a list of these churches. If you feel energetic and would like to participate, further details and sponsorship forms are available from Carolyn on 852754.
COFFEE MORNING
On September 13th, to coincide with the Ride and Stride event the Church Café will again be open. We will be selling cakes and quiches as well as there being a general sales table.
Clive, Margaret and Janet will again be attempting to cycle round the Deanery on an exercise bike. They managed it last time but that was a few years ago. Sponsorship will help to keep their legs moving. Money can be donated on the day.
Make do and mend?
Recently I was talking to a colleague, Anne, from the Citizens Advice Bureau who works with younger families. We were reminiscing about various money saving things our parents and grandparents used to do and she said that she was hoping to collect ideas from the older generation on how to save money to pass onto the youngsters. Her favorite tip was given to her by a lady in Swindon for stain removal: To avoid expensive stain removing products simply leave the stained item in a bucket of rain water for 48 hours then wash as normal!
I wondered what sort of advice is on the internet and found the website “mumsnet”; here are some of their ideas:
Get resourceful in the kitchen
· "Only shop for food when there's nothing left. This means getting really creative with dinner"
· "Save the bits you cut off vegetables - broccoli stalks for example - and make into a veg soup when there's enough"
· "Make 'mash' using baked potatoes then save the baked skins for another day. Pop them back in the oven and cover with cheese"
· "Leave the oven doors open after use to warm up the kitchen"
Make do and mend
· "Squash the cardboard inside the loo roll, so it's harder to unravel - that way children use far less of it"
· "Cut open tubes of toothpaste, make-up etc to scrape the bits inside out"
· "Water down all washing up liquids and fabric conditioners"
Don't be afraid to lie to your family
· "My son, who is 19, is drinking 'organic' hot choc. Little does he know it ran out ages ago and has been refilled with a much cheaper option, which he 'doesn't like'"
· "I have fancy handwash bottles in my bathroom and kitchen that I refill with the corresponding colour or scented cheapo bubble bath.
· "In the winter, I diligently check the weather online each night to decide what temperature the central heating will come on at in the morning. Last year, we spent a shedload on gas. Last month's gas bill was half that of December 2012"
· "Xmas shopping starts now in the sales. This saves me hundreds"
Now its your turn! Anne would be delighted to hear the things you and your families did in years gone by to save cash. Give me a call with your ideas, or let me know when you see me at coffee or lunch club. I shall look forward to more cash in my pocket!
Ellen Blacker. Good Neighbour Co-ordinator Phone: 07557 110414 (Please leave a short message and I will return the call – saving your bill!)
ITALIAN EVENING
Following the success of our Curry night we decided to travel to Italy for the next adventure. So come and enjoy the delights of Italy without needing a passport. On 27th Sept 2014 in the Village Hall at Broad Town there will be a three course Italian meal followed by entertainment by Supanova who will be entertaining us with Italian music.
Tickets from Margaret Green - 01793 854200; Margaret Manley – 731564; Carol Oldfield – 731097 and Christine Marshall - 731543. Tickets are £15 Adults and £10 for 12 yrs and under. Tickets are now available. We look forward to seeing you all there. Proceeds to Christ Church.
PLEASE CAN YOU HELP??????????
Our retired horse and pony need a new home. We are looking for grazing and shelter of some sort with a small amount of storage for hay, shavings and rugs as close to Clyffe Pypard as possible. We prefer a quiet location possibly on a farm rather than a large livery yard. We are also interested in a rural house (not near a busy road) with a minimum of 4 bedrooms to rent. If this could be combined with a home for the horses, any local rural area would be of interest. If you can help or know someone who can please contact us.
