FAREWELL TO ALISON TURNBULL

It was a crowded Church of congregation to say a last “Goodbye” to Alison who was only in her 60s.  She served the community as an RAF Nurse.  She leaves behind a husband and 3 sons.

CHURCH COFFEE MORNING AND PLANT SALE

We would like to express our thanks to all who supported the Church at the coffee morning and plant sale.

The total raised was a magnificent £570.80 of which £375 comes from the plant sale in the garden of Colin and Judy Rendell. Well done to them.

FAREWELL FROM OUR HEALTH & WELLBEING CHAMPION

It is with a heavy heart that I have to tell you that I have resigned my position of Health and Wellbeing Champion for the Royal Wootton Bassett and Cricklade Community Area.  It is not a decision I have made lightly but I feel that now is the right time for me to try to make more time for myself and family.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all so much for welcoming me into your communities and for working with me through referrals etc for the good of the residents.

With the above in mind, can you put these words into the magazines for me please?  On a personal note, I still rave about the magazines.  I believe they are the lifeblood of rural communities, never underestimate their/your importance!

SUPPORTING THE WORK OF THE ALZHEIMER’S SOCIETY

A group of villagers including Rosemary & Andrew Law, Annette Moore, Lesley Blackburn and Paul & Anne Granger are aiming to raise over £1,000 to support the fantastic work of the Alzheimer’s Society by taking on their Trek26Stonehenge challenge.  We will be walking 13 miles in tough terrain (i.e. scrambling up and down steep hills!) around Salisbury and Warminster on Saturday 31^st August 2019.  Google Trek26Stonehenge if you want to see what it’s all about.

PARISH COUNCIL UPDATE

Planning Application – number 19/03874/OUT

The Parish Council received notification on 1^st May via email from Wiltshire Council of a planning application for the land south of Broad Town primary school for a residential development of up to 10 entry-level affordable dwellings, with associated access roads and car parking, a community car park, a publicly accessible village green, landscaping, drainage and other associated infrastructure.

The Parish Council and residents can comment on the application up to 6 June and the documentation is at http://planning.wiltshire.gov.uk/Northgate/PlanningExplorer/ApplicationSearch.aspx. Follow this link and then enter the planning application number 19/03874/OUT.

As this is a significant development proposal for our village we would encourage everyone to look at what is being proposed and to voice their opinion to Wiltshire Planning.  You can do this by either completing the online form or by writing to Catherine Blow, Wiltshire Planning, Monkton Park, Chippenham SN15 1ER.

Our Parish Council meeting on the 13 May was an opportunity to share the analysis that Councillors had done to date on the application and to hear the views of residents from all parts of the village.  The Parish Council will be objecting to the planning application based on our concerns that

There is no need for this housing in Broad Town and that the application significantly overstates the suitability of Broad Town for commuter entry level housing.

It will substantially increase traffic and car journeys.

It will irreversibly change the peaceful environment around our school, grade 2 listed church and graveyard, and impact on views of the White Horse and down from the AONB.

It will increase the risk of flooding both in Broad Town and Thornhill.

The application runs counter to the Wiltshire Core Planning Strategy which only permits infill housing in small villages like ours and not residential housing developments.

There is no need for a village green as we have several community green spaces which includes a well-used, well maintained playing field.

The 36 space car park will only be used exceptionally rarely and will have a large visual impact on the surrounding area.

The maintenance and security of both the proposed village green and car park will increase the amount residents pay in the annual precept.

Wiltshire Highways have advised that cars parked on the road by the school during peak times when children are going to or leaving school are a valuable traffic calming measure.

We will be correcting inaccurate facts contained in the application about our village that mis-represent the village views on additional housing within the village.

It should be noted that residents of Broad Town have no priority access to this housing.

We have spoken to Wiltshire Planning and they are keen to hear the views of as many people in the village as possible.  So please take the opportunity to have your say before 6 June.

Parish Steward

Football Goal Posts

We are delighted to say that the new Football goal posts are now installed and we hope users of the playing field will enjoy testing them out!

The next Parish Council meeting is 11th June at 18.30pm in the Village Hall. Everyone is welcome and refreshments will be provided.

THE GUILD OF WILTSHIRE ARTISTS

Run workshops at the Village Hall on every first Friday and third Saturday of the month from 10am to 3pm.  All are welcome including painters who are beginners. The cost is still £5 per person per session which includes tea/coffee and biscuits but do bring a packed lunch.  Help will be given to those who request it.

COMMUNITY HEARTBEAT TRUST DEFIBRILLATOR

This is a reminder that we have a defibrillator in the Village.  It is sited outside the Village Hall and is available for anyone to use in the unfortunate situation of someone they are with having heart failure.  It is simple to use and talks you through what you must do.  It is a requirement though, that you RING 999 FIRST to get help on the way as soon as possible.  The ambulance service will also tell you what to do and support you while you wait for the ambulance.  If you are within 200m of the Hall they will automatically tell you about the defibrillator and tell you the access code.  If you are further away but have someone who could fetch it for you quickly, you will need to ask them for the access code.
