TIME TO CHANGE THE CLOCKS AGAIN

Putting our clocks forward and backward an hour in the Spring and Autumn has become part of our life we take for granted.

William Willet, the originator of the idea, had to campaign for many years in the face of much opposition and ridicule, and indeed, died shortly before his plans were put into practice.

The idea came to him one early morning as he was going riding. One bright summer morning in 1907 he noticed the blinds still drawn in most of the houses he passed and thought it was a waste of daylight. From this simple idea sprang his revolutionary idea. Willett wanted others to share his delight in the morning.

Well may we sing with Eleanor Farjeon – Mine is the sunlight, mine is the morning.

Thank you for all the support at our last coffee morning – you raised £238.15. Plus another £30 will be returned to us as a result of our static ride round the Deanery on behalf of Wilts Historic Churches Trust.

HARVEST

Our Harvest Thanksgiving will start as usual with our Harvest Tea at 5.00pm. This will be followed by a Songs of Praise. We will again be collecting tins and packets for the Swindon Food Bank. At the moment they are short of UHT milk, tinned fruit and tinned puddings. They also collect essentials such as shampoo, washing up liquid, and soap.

A THANK YOU TO THE MAN IN THE SILVER VAN

On 31st July our ginger tom cat Jasper was hit and killed by a car on Broad Town Road. Had it not been for the kindness of a man who we only know to have driven a silver van, we may never have known what happened to Jasper. A local man in a silver van took Jasper to the local vets and it meant that they could call us and let us know.

PARISH CLERKS CLIPPINGS

1.. Matt Nailon has been co-opted onto the Parish Council

2. Cllr Jenny Newman has resigned from the Council, so there is yet another vacancy.

3. There are two ongoing consultations by Wiltshire Council. They are on bus passes, and green collections. They can be accessed on Wiltshire.gov.uk.

4. The Village Information Leaflet is about to be re-issued. Please check that the information contained is relevant to your organisation..

5. An interesting comment was passed to me by the editor of the 'News' concerning dog mess versus horse droppings. Other than the fact that not picking up dog mess can lead to a pretty hefty fine, which does not apply to horse droppings, but that dog faeces carry diseases which can cause blindness in children and abortions in cattle.

BROAD TOWN WI

This summer our WI has been out and about thanks to the good weather. We have had a taster golf session, a walk to a pub for a meal, a visit to Toomers garden centre and a visit to Highclere Castle. We also supported the village Big Gig, serving tea, coffee and a wide variety of cakes. Money raised will be split between the Air Ambulance and WI funds.

Our September meeting was held back in Broad Town Village Hall. After a discussion about our proposed programme for next year, two of our members presented slide shows of their recent holidays. One member told us about a trip to a remote village in West Bengal, India, to celebrate the 100^th anniversary of the founding of a hospital by her husband’s uncle and aunt. She was surprised by the wonderful welcome they received, with the whole village involved in the celebrations. She was amazed by the happiness of the villagers despite their material poverty.

The other described her family holiday to the very north of Sweden to see the Northern lights. She showed some amazing photos of the bright green, curtain-like, light show that they witnessed. They also went snow-shoe trekking, dog sledding and experienced an overnight stay at an ice hotel. The hotel is built afresh every winter and is left to melt in the summer. It is built of snow and huge blocks of ice cut from the river. Each room is different and decorated with huge ice sculptures.

October’s meeting will be an evening of line dancing with a cowboy supper and will be held on Wednesday 15^th October at 7.30pm at the village hall. New members are always welcome. For more information contact Jane on 731105.

Have you lived in Broad Town since before 1995? Not been up to the village hall for a drink for a few years? Yes? There’s a FREE PINT with your name on it waiting for you at the bar. Come and claim it (you could always have a glass of wine, spirit & mixer, soft or hot drink instead if pints aren’t your thing). And we’re much cheaper than most pubs. Also: if you’ve got any family or friends who were born and bred in Broad Town or lived here for a long time but have moved away in the last decade or so, bring ‘em along too – they can have a free drink on us as well! Cheers!

Big Gig Bar 2014 Sterling efforts from Rod, Rupert P, Rupert B, Judy, Steph, Anne, Lesley, Zoe, Brian & Stewie: THANK YOU. As well as contributing to our usual donation to the Big Gig’s coffers, you helped raise around £350 for Broad Town Social Club. And of course thank you to everyone that bought drinks from us – Somerset Snuffler is an awesome traditional cider that’ll be featuring at the village hall bar again in the near future!

BAR 8pm-late EVERY FRIDAY – Enjoy a drink, FREE DARTS, FREE POOL FREE TABLE TENNIS and FREE TABLE FOOTBALL with friends and neighbours. Christmas draw numbers on sale at £1 each: see Jenny or any bar staff to get yours: hundreds of pounds-worth of prizes big and small! Draw will take place at the Christmas Bingo session on SUNDAY 14TH December. Please note: it is very unlikely that we will be hosting a Halloween disco this year, but if you fancy volunteering to organise it, please contact Matt (details above). The bar will be open as normal on Friday 31^st October though!

BROAD TOWN BIG GIG

What a fantastic event. Outstanding music, exciting lasers, fine weather, a beautiful location and an enthusiastic audience combined to make the 2014 Big Gig a night to remember.

This was another successful year in which we will be able to support our charities (Soldiers', Sailors' and Airmen's Families Association (SSAFA) and the Goldenhar Family Support Group) as well as other local good causes. We will need to distribute a proportion of our profits so if your good cause needs some funding please put in an application stating an amount, justification and applicants contact details to the Big Gig Committee via a committee member. Applications should be submitted by 8th November.

Many thanks to the bands, our associates (Ray and Maybell Bourton, Broad Town WI, The Broad Town Social Club, Holmes Music, Swindon Laser Hire, Rotary, Bob Collins and Andy Loddington) and our sponsors (ADS, Chris O’Neil and Plantronics) for making it all possible. Many thanks also to all of those who assisted by erecting/dismantling tents and by helping on the night; we couldn’t do it without you.

A particular thanks to Keith Newman who provided the lead in promoting the event. His personal knowledge of the local music scene and his inspired leadership of the Big Gig Committee almost singlehandedly ensured the success of the 2014 Big Gig. Broad Town has benefited greatly through these events, both as a source of entertainment but also as a provider of significant funding for local charities. As Keith moves on to a new life in Devon we offer our thanks for his huge efforts on our behalf.

Looking ahead, the Big Gig Annual General Meeting will take place in the Village Hall at 8.30pm on Friday 14th November. The meeting is open to everyone and being a Social Club evening, the bar will be open. The aim of the meeting will be to draw to a close to the 2014 event and to look forward to 2015 so please come along and support your local community.

Should I stay or should I move?

Deciding whether to move or stay put can be one of the most difficult decisions to make as you get older.

Why might you need to think about moving?

Is your house too big? Is it difficult and expensive to heat? Are you worried about repairs/updating – perhaps you need to replace old windows or the roof? Are you finding it difficult to manage the stairs or use the bath because of ill health? Is it difficult to keep the garden looking as good as it used to?

Have you found it more difficult to get out and about since giving up your car? Perhaps you miss some of the social activities you used to enjoy.

But what are the options?

Before making a decision about moving you need to know what your options are.

Staying put with some help? Home Improvement Agency? Adaptations? Equity release? Rented? Leasehold? Purchased? Sheltered housing? Extra Care? Retirement village?

Where – nearby, near relatives/friends, near shops, social activities?

There is a lot to think about!

BUSY BEES

We meet in Bushton Village Hall on second and fourth Wednesdays 1.45 to 2.45pm. We welcome all babies and toddlers and their parents or carers and any other family visitors who happen to be around at the time. Do come for a coffee, a chat, and a play. Plenty of parking and lots of room to play.

THE GUILD OF WILTSHIRE ARTISTS

Run workshops at the Village Hall on every third Saturday of the month from 10am to 4pm. All are welcome including painters who are beginners.

Tea and Coffee provided but do bring a packed lunch. Help will be given to those who request it. Contact telephone numbers 731154, 731519.
