FROM UNEXPECTED BEGINNINGS
A fifteen year old boy was at Mount Clemens Station, a small out of the way place in Ohio, chatting to the station master, when the latter’s little girl wandered on to the line in front of an approaching train. The teenager immediately dashed forward and swept her to safety. The child’s father could not reward the youth with money, but he rewarded him in a much more valuable way. He taught him telegraphy, and before long the youth became an acknowledged expert.
He is known to us all for his many inventions – Thomas Alva Edison. Where would we be today without that first brave act.
FAREWELL
Unfortunately we have had to say a fond farewell to another member of the community. Doreen Lovegrove had lived in Broad Town since 1972. Doreen was born in Brinkworth and after her marriage to Frank moved to Thornhill. She loved her dog, knitting, embroidery and was known for making Christmas cakes. These she gave to the people she worked for.
She leaves 4 children and 4 grandchildren.

BROAD TOWN VILLAGE HALL
Our Annual General Meeting is to take place on Tuesday 17th March 2015 at 6.30pm at Broad Town Village Hall. Everyone is welcome and we rely on volunteers to help run and maintain the Village Hall. If you wish to have an input into the running of the Hall, then please come along and join us (no experience needed). We look forward to seeing you on Tuesday 17th March at 6.30pm. Thank you.
BROAD TOWN SCHOOL
On 20th , 21st and 22nd of April, we will be creating a new altar cloth to use in our school hall and some Christian symbols to hang around our school. We have a textile artist, Elisa Amor, coming to support us. We are aiming to involve every child in the school with some aspect of this project and so we would like to gather a small army of volunteers to help us. You will be working with a very small group of children, supervised by Elisa or a member of school staff. So, if you could spare a few hours to thread needles and help with the sewing, we would be delighted to hear from you. Please contact the school office (01793 731395 or admin@broadtown.wilts.sch.uk) and let us know when you can help. We will get back to you as soon as possible.
BROAD TOWN COMMUNITY SPEED WATCH
FACTS: Over 1,750 vehicles pass through Broad Town every day. At certain times, 60% of these vehicles exceed the 30mph speed limit. The average speed logged is 40mph in the 30mph zone: meaning half of all speeders exceed 40mph. Top speed recorded in 2014: 73mph. QUESTION: What are YOU going to do about it?
We URGENTLY need new volunteers if we are to perform any more of our roadside sessions helping make your village safer. If you can spare just 90 minutes a month, please contact: Matthew on 01793 731499 email oscar.littlelad@gmail.com or come talk to us anytime by the roadside.

BROAD TOWN WI
As our planned speaker was unavailable we invited Angela Hughes to talk to us, at very short notice, for which we were very grateful.
Angela has worked as a volunteer at Erlestoke Prison for the last 6 years. Erlestoke Prison is near Westbury and is the only prison in Wiltshire. It accommodates about 500 male category C prisoners. It focuses on training and rehabilitation. Angela is a trustee of ‘The Friends of Erlestoke Prison’, a charity which helps support offenders and keep them in touch with their families. They have been able to support worthwhile projects when government funding has been withdrawn.
Our March Annual General Meeting is on Wednesday 18th at 7.30pm at Broad town Village hall. Following the meeting we are to have a Tai Chi taster session.
We are a friendly group and welcome new members from the village, Wootton Bassett and the surrounding area, so come and meet us. For more information phone Jane on 731105.
BROAD TOWN BUMPS AND BEYOND
Bumps is a friendly, local playgroup for babies and pre-school children. We meet every Tuesday in term time at Broad Town Village Hall from 9.30 to 11.30am. We would welcome more families to join us for fun playtime and a craft activity each week.
We would like to thank the kind ladies from Broad Town WI who have been recently helping us out, particularly at snack time. We really appreciate your time and effort.
BROAD TOWN COMMUNITY LED PLANNING (CLP) GROUP
We will be holding a meeting of the CLPG on Monday 2nd March 7pm to 9pm in the Village Hall to give an update on the progress of the Neighbourhood Plan and to provide an opportunity for views to be put forward and questions answered - to the best of our knowledge - about the process.
We understand from the draft Parish Council minutes that consideration of the draft Broad Town section of the Neighbourhood Plan submitted to the Parish Council has been “accepted as it is, but that an alternative option is added to be subject of a public consultation”. We have further been informed “The Parish Council has asked for a more detailed report from Hannick Homes and has clearly stated that further consultation on the vexed question of development is required.” The results from the Hannick Homes consultation event have now been published and can be found on our Community Forum. This item will be further considered at the Parish Council meeting on 9th March.
The CLPG is committed to the Neighbourhood Plan process being open and transparent and therefore residents are welcome to come to our meeting to find out more and share views. The agenda will be published on our Community Forum website.
Please contact us if you would like to go onto our mailing list on lorraine@mrsbillis.co.uk. More information is on our Community Forum on www.broad-town.co.uk .
PARISH CLERKS CLIPPINGS
The consideration of the Community Led Planning Group report was an agenda item in the February meeting. The Council accepted the report but with reservations, and is awaiting advice from Wilts Council on how best to proceed. Hannick Homes has produced notes on its open day, which must be considered, although it is accepted that they will be biased, and there has also been some representation from residents. This item will be on the agenda for 9th March.
HANNICK HOMES PUBLIC CONSULTATION – LAND SOUTH OF BROAD TOWN PRIMARY SCHOOL
Hannick Homes would like to thank everyone who participated in our public consultation event on January 20th. There was a very high turnout with approximately 130 people attending and 84 comment forms returned. This is a much higher level of participation than we would normally expect for a village the size of Broad Town and shows the keen interest locals have in planning for the village’s future.
We are pleased to report that we received a lot of constructive feedback, with the majority of those who attended (63%) supporting some new housing within Broad Town, particularly if it can help deliver additional benefits for the village. Just under a third (32%) were against new housing within the village. Analysis of feedback received showed that there was a very high amount of support for the provision of a car park for the school and church to address safety concerns on Broad Town Road. The funding of traffic calming works on Broad Town Road and the provision of smaller starter homes to enable young people and families to remain living in the village were the next two most popular benefits. We also received a number of useful suggestions, such as the provision of some bungalows for older residents, which we will keep in mind going forward.
We have provided a summary of the feedback received to Broad Town Parish Council to help inform the emerging Neighbourhood Plan. There will be a further opportunity to provide your views on the future of Broad Town when the Parish Council consults on a draft version of the neighbourhood plan in the coming months. We look forward to continuing to work with locals to develop a proposal which reflects your wishes and helps secure long term benefits for the village. If you would like to provide any additional feedback or suggestions please contact us at Homes@hannick.com or 01793 439539.
Can YOU help…..?
Can you spare a little time during the week to befriend someone who may be housebound and lonely? Could you step in to support someone who has just come out of hospital? I have been asked by Age UK and Carer Support Wiltshire to do a bit of advertising for them.
Annie and Jane’s contact details are below, or call me, Ellen, on 07557 110414 for an informal chat.
Volunteers needed in this area for our Home from Hospital Service
This service is being offered to older people who have been discharged from hospital and are worried about how they will manage when they return home. Volunteers will provide short term support for 4-8 weeks, assisting the service user to regain the independence they had before the admission to hospital. An example of this would be doing someone’s shopping for the first two weeks, and then accompanying them on a shopping trip on the third week. Annie and Jane, the Discharge Support Caseworkers, will support volunteers every step of the way.
Would this type of role suit your skills and experience?
This role would suit somebody warm and friendly, who is a good listener and sensitive to older people’s needs, and who has their own car and is happy to drive within their locality.
How much time and commitment is involved? Usually between 1-2 hours for each person visited, perhaps twice a week.
What training is provided? Home from Hospital Volunteer Induction Training Programme – 4 hours
For further information please contact: Annie Fiducia or Jane Harber on 01380 727767

CLEARZONE PEST CONTROL
Whilst all of our summer season’s insects may have died down, households and businesses suffer with infestations of rats, mice, cluster flies, moths and ladybirds.
I’m sure we all understand that rats and mice can spread many life threatening diseases. However, did you know they both need to keep gnawing, as their teeth never stop growing? This leaves us at risk to fire, flood and communication breakdown, as these rodents munch their way through cables and pipes. Did you know that rats can even eat their way into our houses through brick walls?!
The UK is experiencing attack from Asian Harlequin Ladybirds. They defecate on soft furnishings and the gooey yellow stuff that seeps out of their joints, smells foul, stains and rots wallpaper, curtains, sofas and other soft furnishings. If you find a few on your windowsills, don’t assume it will stop there – they let off pheromones that attract others in their thousands!
Whilst cluster flies are not known to carry specific disease, they can be a nuisance. Today, in one house, I must have vacuumed up ten thousand of them from windowsills. Once in roof cavities and lofts they can cause fire risk, as their dehydrated corpses fry on the back of halogen lights and clog up ceiling roses.
With modern heating, moths now survive our winters indoors, with their larvae munching their way through carpets, curtains and other soft fabrics.
As for moles, they continue to keep us busy all year around!
Should you have any pest problems that you would like to discuss, please feel free to contact me for a no obligation quote. I’m based in Broad Town and my contact details are attached to the back of this Newsletter
