Happy Easter!

Christina Rossetti wrote – “Spring bursts to-day, for Christ is risen and all the earth’s at play” in her poem Easter Carol. There is something deeply reassuring about marking the resurrection of Jesus Christ as our natural world springs back to life at this time of year. However before we get to Easter day (April 4th), I do hope you will be able to join us across the churches of the benefice for the special events of Holy Week for our Maundy Thursday and Good Friday worship. We then move into our marking of Easter, which starts with a vigil and then the first communion of Easter on Saturday 3rd April at 9pm in Christchurch Broad Town. This really special service includes lighting our special Easter candle from a bonfire and welcoming the resurrection in song, and celebration (please bring something with which to make joyful noise).Christina Rossetti’s poem ends – ‘Sing, creatures, sing, angels and men and birds and everything. All notes of doves fill our world: this is the time of loves’. Though love came down at the first Christmas, it really changed our world at the first Easter!

With love in Christ, our risen Lord. Alison Way

1) BROAD TOWN PARISH PLAN QUESTIONNAIRE – RESULTS EVENING! AND WHERE WE GO FROM HERE!

If this catches you in time, it’s just a last reminder from the Steering Group that we’ll be presenting the results of the Broad Town Parish Plan Questionnaire on Friday 26th March in Broad Town Village Hall. There’ll be refreshments from 7pm and the Presentation will start at 7:30 pm. The bar will open at 9pm after the Q & A Session. We’ll be telling you ‘what you told us’, so we’re sure you’ll find the evening very interesting and well worth turning out for. You’re probably also wondering what happens next, when the Plan will be completed, and what happens after that. You may even still be wondering why we are doing the Plan in the first place. We’ll be answering all these questions at the Presentation.

We’ll look forward to seeing you then. We really hope you’ll be able to make it.

6) BROAD TOWN WI

The Broad Town WI members met on Wed 17th March in the village hall for their regular meeting on the 3rd Wednesday of every month. After some business the speaker, Mr Fred Smith (AKA The Wiltshire Beekeeper), gave a spell binding and in depth talk on his love for bees and his work as a full time beekeeper. He covered starting up as a beekeeper, the lifecycle of bees, the habitat and properties of honey as well as dispelling some mythology that surrounds bees. The talk was accompanied by some exceptional photographs taken by Fred and his associate Chris. We all came away much the wiser about a subject featured frequently in the media.

This month’s talk will be: Working with the bodies endorphins to relax and enliven on Wednesday 21st April at 7:30pm in the village hall. Visitors most welcome.

4) HILMARTON SKITTLES AND SUPPER EVENING

Friday 16th April in Goatacre Village Hall at 7:30pm for 7:45pm. In aid of Hilmarton Church Funds. Tickets £6 available from Adele at Hilmarton Post Office or Trish on 01249 760638.

10) VILLAGE HALL

9) DON'T FORGET THE WEEKEND OF JUNE 11TH - 13TH

Concert. Roger Mepstead and a vocalist will be performing a Karen Carpenter tribute concert in the Church. Tickets for the concert will be on sale soon from all members of the PCC.

Nursery Rhyme Scarecrows. We hope you have all had your thinking caps on and decided on your nursery rhyme. There is an entry form on the back of this month’s newsletter for the competition. There will be a workshop in the Church to help with ideas for your scarecrow on Saturday May 8th from 10am till noon. This is in the very capable hands of Bob Clarke and we thank him for the contribution to the weekend.

Gardens Open. We already have several families who have agreed to have their gardens open to the public on the same weekend. They cover the whole spectrum from informal wildlife to formal garden. There will be a plant stall in one garden and refreshments in another garden.

5) BIG GIG - 4th September 2010

It’s all spadework at the moment, with the odd pleasurable trip to see some live music. We’ve ‘signed up’ two bands for the 4th September – The Wutars and Kicaberry, two quality acts we think you’ll love – listen to some sample tracks at the 2010 page on the website. We still have plenty of irons in the fire music wise and hope to present a broad spectrum of musical genres, so more news soon.

Another date for your diaries: Sunday, 18th April when we will be painting the lock up. We need your help to get the job done as quickly as possible, so please turn up (in old clothes, bring sandwiches) from 10:00 am onwards – if you have any old rollers and brushes, please bring them as we want to minimise the cost. Keep an eye on the website as we may have to cancel in case of inclement weather.

We are working hard to secure sponsorship but it is tough going at the moment. If you know of any benevolent local business or corporate who would be willing to put something back into the community and be associated with our fundraising efforts for local organisations and Help for Heroes, please get in touch as soon as possible. There is a document on the Sponsors page of the website detailing what’s on offer for various levels of funding.

Feel free to drop us an email on biggig@broadtownshow.co.uk or telephone 739268 with any suggestions for sponsors and/or bands, or more information on the use of the marquees.
