Remembrance

This year Armistice Day and Remembrance Sunday both fall on 11^th November. We remember on this day as it is the anniversary of the signing of the armistice between the Allies and Germany on the eleventh hour of the eleventh month in 1918, which brought an end to the first World War. In just a few years we will be marking the centenary of this event, with the memories of more recent conflicts added into the mix that we bring to our Remembrance.

Remembrance Sunday is a day to pause, to reflect, and to deeply remember the sacrifice of many lives in war, do join us for worship for this day if you can. What follows is one of the prayers we use on this day for your personal use.

Ever-living God, we remember those whom you have gathered from the storm of war into the peace of your presence; may that same peace calm our fears, bring justice to all peoples and establish harmony among the nations,through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

On another note – we have our next re-arranged Children’s Workshop – entitled ‘Who put the colours in the rainbow?’ in Hilmarton Church Hall on Saturday 10^th November 2012 at 10am for key stage one and key stage two children and their parents. Lots of fun is guaranteed as we explore the story of Noah’s ark creatively. Do let me know if you are going to attend so we can have enough materials for all!

HALLOWEEN SAFETY ADVICE

Wednesday 31 October marks this year’s Halloween, traditionally a time when young people like to dress up and have fun ‘Trick or Treating’ in their local communities.

Wiltshire Police and its partners are encouraging young people to be safe and respect others this Halloween, to ensure that it can be enjoyed by everyone.

Parents and carers have an important role to play to help keep children and young people safe and encourage them to act responsibly when they’re taking part in ‘Trick or Treating.’

“Anyone who engages in anti-social behaviour should be warned that it will not be tolerated. We will be increasing patrols on the night and the consequences of engaging in such activities could be serious.” Help keep Halloween an enjoyable and safe time for you and your family by following the simple Halloween code below:

· Always ‘Trick and Treat’ with an adult

· Parents/carers should ensure their children act sensibly

· Only visit a house where you, or the people you are with, know the occupants

· Do not knock on doors where there is a sign saying ‘Sorry no trick or treat here please’

· Stay in areas that are well lit with street lights. Take a torch with you just in case

· Stay with the people you are with - do not go off on your own

· Do not talk to strangers on the street

· Do not enter any house – stay on the door step

· Be careful not to frighten vulnerable people, especially the elderly

· Look carefully before crossing the road

· Don’t vandalise anything or throw things like eggs and flour. This type of behaviour will not be tolerated and you could end up getting into trouble with the police. Many people don’t realise that by throwing eggs and flour at someone’s property, they may be causing criminal damage - an offence which can result in a three month jail sentence or a fine of up to £2,500

· Young people who repeatedly disturb residents by door knocking are committing an offence under the Town and Police Clauses Act, which can carry a jail sentence of up to 14 days or a fine of up to £1,000. Targeting an individual with such objects can lead to a charge of assault, regardless of whether the objects make contact.

· Penalty Notices for disorder can also be issued which carry a fine of up to £80. Penalising offenders on the spot makes it more straightforward for officers and enables a faster response in tackling anti-social behaviour before it escalates

· Unexpected callers at the door can cause distress for some people, particularly the elderly. For people who do not want to receive ‘Trick or Treat’ callers a poster has been produced displaying in large font ‘Sorry, no trick or treat here please.’ The poster should be displayed in a prominent position either on the front door or front window. The posters can be downloaded from our website.

Local Neighbourhood Policing Teams (NPTs) will also be distributing the posters throughout their communities. Please contact your local NPT if you would like a poster. You can find details of your local NPT on the Wiltshire Police website www.wiltshire.police.uk

POLICE 101 NON-EMERGENCY NUMBER was launched in Wiltshire last September (2011) as part of the national roll-out.
Our 0845 408 7000 contact number has been running alongside this number with approximately 40% of calls still coming in via this route, however, 0845 408 7000 ceased operation on 30 September 2012.
When should callers use 101?
The 101 national number gives local communities an easy way to contact police - when it's less urgent than 999.
In a non-emergency dial 101 if:
* you want to report a crime/issue that does not require an immediate emergency response
* you or someone else are not in immediate danger
* you would like to speak to your local police officer
* you want to provide information about a crime
It is important to reiterate that 999 is still the number when you want to contact the police in an emergency, such as:
* you need an immediate response because a crime is in progress or you think it is
* you or someone else is injured or there is a threat to life
* a serious road traffic collision has taken place
* violence is being used or threatened
How does 101 work?
101 will be available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. When someone calls 101, they will hear a recorded message announcing that they are being connected to their local police force. The system will determine the caller's location and connect them to the relevant police force.
If a caller is on a boundary between two or more forces, the recorded message will give them a choice of which force to be connected to. After a pause of approximately four seconds, the message will also give the caller the option to select an alternative police force of their choice via an operator.
What will happen to the current 0845 408 7000 number? The 0845 number ceased on 30 September 2012. A recorded message asks people to re-dial 101.
Can people who are deaf, hard of hearing or speech impaired, use 101?
People who are deaf, hard of hearing or speech impaired can text-phone 18001101.
In an emergency, you can text 80999 from any phone.
Is it more expensive for the public to contact the police on 101? Individual telephony companies currently decide on the cost of dialling an 0845 number so it depends on the contract/supplier opted for. With 101 it has been nationally agreed that a flat rate of 15p will be charged whether a member of the public is calling from a landline or mobile, irrespective of how long their call lasts.

HARVEST THANKSGIVING

The Church would like to express its heart-felt thanks to the people of Broad Town and School parents for their generosity.

A lot of food has been collected for the Swindon Food Bank. The food came via the Harvest Songs of Praise in Church, the School Harvest service and the Social Club.

We know that all the food will be put to good use by going directly to the growing number of people in the Swindon area who use the Bank. Again, a great big Thank You.

CHRISTMAS RAFFLE

Tickets are now available from Church members for our annual Christmas Raffle.

1^st prize this year will be £50 cash

2^nd prize will be a £30 gift card from M & S. 3^rd prize will be a coffee hamper.

There will also be other prizes.

COFFEE MORNING

Come and join in all the fun and fellowship at the café for our Christmas Coffee Morning, 10am – 12noon.

There will be mulled wine, refreshments, Christmas table and tinsel tombola amongst other goodies. The Christmas raffle will also take place

FRIENDS OF CHRIST CHURCH BROAD TOWN

Nine years ago we started “the Friends” to raise money to help to pay for the upkeep and maintenance of the fabric of the church. In that time we have started work to address the problem of the damp in the walls and this is ongoing. We are very grateful to all those who became friends and especially those who have continued thro’ these last nine years.. Thank you. We would like to encourage more to become a friend... even if you do not come to church but still wish a church to be part of our village life. To become a friend a minimum of £12 per annum is requested. You can do this by cheque annually or direct debit. If you are a UK tax payer you can gift aid, giving the church an extra 25p in every pound. If you ring either of the church wardens (contacts in Parish info sheet or church notice board) or Rosemary McLaren tel:731526. Application form and gift aid form can be delivered to your house.

CHATTERBOX

Fun, interactive groups with stories rhyme and song to encourage speech and listening for all little chatterboxes aged 0 – 5yrs.

This will be held at Broad Town School from Thurs 8^th November for 6 weeks – 10 – 11am.

BROAD TOWN COMMUNITY LED PLANNING (CLP) GROUP

Please keep a look-out for more information from Common Places, the Project Managers for our Neighbourhood Plan involving Broad Town and the surrounding area. The first stages of the consultation and public engagement part of the Neighbourhood Plan process will be developed further within upcoming events, due to take place from January 2013. We hope that everyone in Broad Town will do their best to attend these events that will give all of you the opportunity to be involved in land use (planning) issues within their area. You can now contribute to these issues that include housing, roads and development. The Area Steering Group, the Parish Council and Common Places have all worked hard over the past months to ensure that you will have the chance to have your voices heard, so please do come along. Our next CLP Group meeting is likely to be in early January, the precise date will be announced in the December newsletter. BROAD TOWN COMMUNITY SPEED WATCH

Want to find out about Speed Watch? Parishioners of all ages are always welcome to come along and have a go themselves in one of our five locations between Broadacres and the village hall any Sunday in November between 1100-1200 or 1500-1600, or stop by for a chat any time you see us. More volunteers always needed! Further info from Matthew on 731499 or email oscar.littlelad@gmail.com During October, Wiltshire Police and County Council approved two extra locations for your village CSW team's sessions – sites already used regularly by traffic officers. Sadly, we were shocked and dismayed to record higher percentages of traffic at over 45mph than we have been used to logging at our three previous spots for the last nine months, hopefully our continued monitoring will encourage regular travellers to drive more considerately. Thank You For Travelling At Thirty!

BIG GIG Donations / Broad Town Show AGM

Following on from the great success of the Big Gig 2012, your committee has made donations to Wilts Air Ambulance £650. Goldenhar £650. Bumps and Beyond £700.

Church £500. Newsletter £100. Neighbourhood Watch £70. Miss Swindon Charity £50.

That brings the total donations from the Big Gig to £13 300, well done to everyone who has helped out over the years, however small the contribution.

Don’t forget: the Big Gig/Broad Town Show AGM will be held on Friday, November 23rd at 7:30pm in the Village Hall. There will be changes on the committee with some taking a well-deserved break, so it’s important we have new blood to carry on the excellent work. People did express keen interest in getting involved at the Big Gig, so now’s the time to act; come along and get stuck in. Also, if you are keen on resurrecting the Produce Show, please attend – we’d be delighted if the marquees can be put to additional good use.

PARISH COUNCIL CLERKS CLIPPINGS

1. Hedges. It is now the season of mists and mellow fruitfulness, and time to trim hedges and verges. It will give the Village a smarter appearance. Please be mindful of the ability of drivers to be able to see clearly when pulling out onto the main road.

2. Complaints. Dogs being left in the house for long periods, causing distress to the dog and annoyance to the neighbours. The Parish Council cannot act in these circumstances, but problems should be reported to the Dog Warden, or RSPCA. Also, the PC will be looking into the problem of badly behaved, anti-social dogs.

3. Footpaths. The PC receives regular complaints about the state of Rights of Way (footpaths and bridleways) in the Village. The maintenance of these is the responsibility of the landowner, and Wilts Council, but we can help ourselves by ensuring that where they pass over your land, you ensure that they do not become blocked. Further, carry secateurs to get rid of overgrown vegetation. The PC is still looking for a stout-hearted walker who would form a group to cover this aspect of rural life.

Our speaker last month was local historian and author Richard Broadhead who gave us a very interesting talk on ‘Soldiers of the Great War’.

Richard has written several books about the soldiers from Wiltshire towns and villages from their background and family life to their very different lives after their enlistment into the army. Many young men did not survive their first few days in battle; five out of every nine men were casualties. Families often never found out what had happened to their sons and husbands. Many of the men named on the War memorials did heroic and selfless acts, but sadly little is remembered of their bravery and many have no memorials. Richard through the Society ‘Finding the Forgotten’ has been trying to rectify the situation by finding the graves of these forgotten war casualties.

This month we are having a Bollywood workshop and our speaker (or dancer) will be Dorothy Clarke. New members are welcome, so why not join us for a fun evening starting at 7.30pm on Wednesday 21^st November at Broad Town Village Hall. For more information contact Jane on 01793731105.

BROAD TOWN HISTORY & ARCHAEOLOGY PROJECT

Saturday, 24th November 2012 at Broad Town Village Hall - Open from 19:00 - Talk starts 19:30. Free presentation (although donations always welcome) covering the last 10 years of archaeological work in the area - everything from the end of the last Ice Age to Saxon executions and beyond - followed by a launch of the final year of work.

Come along and see how you can get involved in the last chapter of the villages history.

This project was latterly supported by the University of Bath, Swindon College and QinetiQ Archaeology. Our Heritage Lottery Fund grant application has been rejected so we are investigating other funding arrangements. www.broadtownhistory.moonfruit.com
