Christ Church Broad Town Christmas Draw

Tickets for this year’s Christmas Draw are now available and will soon be distributed within the village.  The main prizes this year are 1^st Prize – Wyvern Theatre Voucher

2^nd Prize – Afternoon Tea for Two at Chiseldon House Hotel 3^rd Prize – Hamper

Plus lots of other exciting prizes.  As usual, the draw will take place at the Christmas Coffee Morning in church which, this year is on Saturday 30^th November 2019 10:00am – noon.  Reluctantly we have had to increase the cost of a ticket to £1 or £5 per book of 5 tickets.

 

CHURCH WORK MORNINGS 2019

Thank you to everyone who helped at our final (for this year) work morning in September and also to everyone who has helped throughout the year.  We regularly receive favourable comments from people visiting our Churchyard.

PARISH COUNCIL UPDATE

Gigaclear.  Before our Parish Council meeting, we met with Chris Moore, the Community Engagement Officer from Gigaclear.  Broad Town remains next on their list to have the cables laid for superfast broadband but he was still not able to provide us with the firm dates and schedule of works.  It is likely that work will start before the end of the year and will take several months to complete.  The work will involve digging up pavements and verges outside every property in the village to lay the pipes that the fibres will then be run down and the connection boxes.  This will clearly be disruptive but Gigaclear have a very good track record of working courteously with residents and of leaving things in a good state on completion.  The Parish Council has asked Chris to arrange a presentation and Q&A session for all residents in the Village Hall so you can ask him any questions directly.  We will publicise this date shortly.  Gigaclear have also set up a customer care team which can be contacted on 01865 591 137 or via email at networkbuildcare@gigaclear.com

Parish Council meeting.  The Parish Council agenda contained regular business this month.  We reviewed the status of our key projects and our immediate priorities moving forward.

Filing Cabinet.  In line with best practice on records retention, we have gone through all the documents previously stored in a filing cabinet in the Village Hall.  Items that need to be retained have been moved to secure storage and the rest have been confidentially disposed of.  This means that we have a smart filing cabinet looking for a new home. If anyone is interested please contact the Parish Clerk.

The next Parish Council meeting is 14^h October at 18.30pm in the Village Hall.  At this meeting we will be reviewing and awarding new grant applications from our Good Energy Community Fund.  Everyone is welcome and refreshments will be provided.

 

BROAD TOWN FOOTPATH WORKING GROUP

The Broad Town Footpath Working Group has been set up as an official working group of the Parish Council, working with support from Wiltshire Council Rights of Way team.  The aim of the group over the coming months and years is to repair, improve and maintain as much of the parish’s network of footpaths and bridleways as is possible.  As the project gets up and running, volunteers will be invited to assist with tasks around the parish.  As an official working group we benefit from being covered by the PC’s insurance while out working.

We are now preparing tasks to be tackled during autumn/winter 2019 and we have set aside the following days to work on some of them.  No skills are required, training and tools can be provided where necessary.  26 October and 23 November

We have been working over the last couple of weeks on clearing undergrowth on footpath BTOW28, from behind Brewery Cottage alongside the Manor Farm field.  It would be good if it could start to be walked more, to keep the undergrowth down; there is nothing better than using the paths to keep them passable!

BROAD TOWN WI

We are a friendly group and welcome new members.  Our meetings are generally held on the third Wednesday of the month in the Village Hall.  If you are interested in visiting us, please contact Kate on 01793 731536.  We are also on the Broad Town Village website and on Facebook.  On November 20th, at 7.30pm Becky Davison, a Swindon Street Pastor will come to talk to us about her daily work of running the night shelter for homeless people in Swindon.  For this interesting talk we thought it would be nice to invite other villagers to join us.  Refreshments will be available afterwards for a small donation.

HAVE YOU SIGNED UP TO COMMUNITY MESSAGING?

Wiltshire Police use an email alert system called Community Messaging, also known as Neighbourhood Alert, across Wiltshire and Swindon to provide real time information to subscribing residents and businesses.

This is a free service and once subscribed you can choose what sort of alert to receive and how to receive them.  This way the alerts will be tailored specifically to your interests and delivered by email, text or phone.

Community Messaging allows Wiltshire Police, and carefully selected partners, to help keep communities better informed about police and crime updates affecting their local area.  The messages can even be sent to individual postcodes.

Although Wiltshire Police is the main source of information the system is also used by Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue, Wiltshire and Swindon Neighbourhood Watch, Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner, Gas Emergency Service and Action Fraud (the national centre for fraud and cybercrime).  All these partners provide relevant information to help keep you safe and secure.

You can respond directly to messages and rate the value/relevance of alerts on a scale of 1-5.  Your feedback can be most useful to provide first hand intelligence relating to alerts but also to allow us to assess the effectiveness of the system so we keep messages and alerts relevant.

The relevance of alerts is controlled by users through the selection of specific schemes on the system; Neighbourhood watch is one popular choice but there are also groups for Community Speed Watch, Youth Clubs and Groups, Church Watch, Horse Watch, Farm Watch and many others.  All can be selected or deselected as required and all have the ability for you to feed intelligence to crime prevention partners.

It should be emphasised that Community Messaging is not a way of reporting crimes - always call 999 in an emergency or 101 in a non-emergency situation.

Community Messaging doesn’t replace the social media activity that the force uses to reach out to communities but works alongside it to make sure that messages are received in a timely way.  With changes to the algorithms that the leading social media platforms use to distribute information you are possibly seeing far fewer of the posts issued than you did five years ago.  By signing up to Community Messaging you will be sure to receive the information directly.  www.wiltsmessaging.co.uk

COMMUNITY HEARTBEAT TRUST DEFIBRILLATOR

This is a reminder that we have a defibrillator in the Village.  It is sited outside the Village Hall and is available for anyone to use in the unfortunate situation of someone they are with having heart failure.  It is simple to use and talks you through what you must do.  It is a requirement though, that you RING 999 FIRST to get help on the way as soon as possible.  The ambulance service will also tell you what to do and support you while you wait for the ambulance.  If you are within 200m of the Hall they will automatically tell you about the defibrillator and tell you the access code.  If you are further away but have someone who could fetch it for you quickly, you will need to ask them for the access code.

Our Lindy Hop classes are filled with smiles and laughter, along with some great moves to get you on that dance floor.  Don’t worry if you can't bring a partner to dance with as Swing Dance is very sociable and we will rotate everyone around throughout the lesson.

THE GUILD OF WILTSHIRE ARTISTS

Run workshops at the Village Hall on every first Friday and third Saturday of the month from 10am to 3pm.  All are welcome including painters who are beginners. The cost is still £5 per person per session which includes tea/coffee and biscuits but do bring a packed lunch.  Help will be given to those who request it.
