Our thanks to everyone for raising £323 for SCBU Incubator Appeal and Cancer Services at GWH.  Community Coffee Morning £110, Carol Singing £153 and School Carol Service £60.  Brighter Futures have asked us to pass on their thanks for this splendid effort.

 

BROAD TOWN NEWS
 

Thanks to the Parish Council for approving a grant from the Good Energy Fund towards ongoing production costs for the monthly newsletter.

 

CHURCH ELECTORAL ROLL

This year sees a complete revision of the Church Electoral Roll. Forms will be available soon for people to fill in if they wish to be on the Church Electoral Roll.  More information soon.

 

CHURCH FLOOR REPAIRS
 

A further application for permission to carry out essential repairs has now been submitted to Salisbury Diocese for their consideration.

 

BROAD TOWN C OF E PRIMARY SCHOOL

Could we please remind everyone that our recycling facility is now for the sole use of the school and that we no longer collect from the Parish.  In the past the more card we had the better it was for the school as we got paid for it but this is no longer the case.  We now must pay for our recycle container to be taken away, we are charged by the tonne, so we do not want to have to spend the school’s money removing other people’s waste.  Thank you in advance for your understanding and help in this matter.

COMMUNITY HEARTBEAT TRUST DEFIBRILLATOR

This is a reminder that we have a defibrillator in the Village.  It is sited outside the Village Hall and is available for anyone to use in the unfortunate situation of someone they are with having heart failure.  It is simple to use and talks you through what you have to do.  It is a requirement though, that you RING 999 FIRST to get help on the way as soon as possible.  The ambulance service will also tell you what to do and support you while you wait for the ambulance.  If you are within 200m of the Hall they will automatically tell you about the defibrillator and tell you the access code.  If you are further away but have someone who could fetch it for you quickly, you will need to ask them for the access code.

 

THOMAS SPACKMAN EDUCATIONAL TRUST GRANT

Do you know a young person in the Clyffe Pypard or Broad Town area who would benefit from a grant from The Thomas Spackman Educational Trust?

The Charity’s main focus is education or work-related training and apprenticeships but it could also help to develop a particular talent; perhaps help fund tuition in a musical instrument or even to develop a sporting skill.

All formal applications need to be in by the end of March 2019.

COMMUNITY COFFEE MORNING

It was lovely to welcome so many people at the first coffee morning of the year.

On March 13^th we are holding a fundraising coffee morning in aid of the Alzheimer Society.

The Brighter futures coffee morning in December raised £110.  Brighter Futures have announced that their target has been reached for the radiotherapy unit and as they exceeded their target for 5 incubators an additional incubator has been purchased for the special care baby unit. Thanks to everyone who supported this charity.

PARISH COUNCIL UPDATE

As we enter a new year, the Parish Council would like to thank everyone for your tremendous support, and for helping us to identify what you would like to see delivered by the Council for our village.

Budget for 2019/20

At the Parish Council meeting in January, a detailed discussion took place about the budget to be set for the forthcoming year 2019/2020.  There are some key things we want to push forward with this year and we also need to start planning better for our future maintenance requirements.  The Council is committed to looking to find new opportunities for grant funding for some of our bigger projects but most grant funders will require some level of funding contribution from us.  Improvements to the Redhills playing field including replacing the football goal posts in the Spring, the procurement and installation of Speed Indicating devices, a new and improved specific Parish Council website, improvements to the footpaths, and maintaining the Community Heartbeat Trust defibrillator are all projects which will require financing or part financing from the precept.  High capital cost items, such as replacing the fencing around the play area, will be funded by building up a reserve fund over a number of years.  It was decided to set a precept of £9,868 which will result in an increase of £4.59 on a Band D property from £31.88 a year to £36.47.

Public Inquiry Hearing – Appleford, Thornhill  The Parish Council and interested residents submitted information into this Inquiry last year.  The information collected will be presented in a public hearing starting at 10am on Tuesday 26^th February and scheduled to run until Thursday 28^th February at the Council Offices, Monkton Park, Chippenham SN15 1ER.  There is a public gallery should you wish to attend.

Community Fund - The Parish Council was pleased to support the application from Broad Town News for a grant of £400 to cover the costs to produce and deliver this Newsletter for a year.  It is a much valued way for everyone to know the key things that are happening in Broad Town.

The Parish Council will be reviewing new grant applications at our March meeting so if you are a local community organisation seeking funds for a project please send your application into the Parish Clerk by 1^st March (see the Parish Council website for details on how the fund works)

Redhills Play Area  The Council would like to remind dog owners to be considerate in how they dispose of their poo bags.  There are specific bins close to the playing field that should be used please.

At our February meeting we will be deciding exactly which type of Football goal posts to purchase and so if anyone has a view or is particularly interested in this please do come along and voice your opinions.

Bus Passes.  Wiltshire Council have announced that concessionary bus passes will only be renewed if they are being used within Wiltshire and that people will have to apply for their passes to be renewed when that is needed rather than the current automatic renewal process. If you are affected by this and want more detail then please go to the Wiltshire Council website.

The date of the next Parish Council meeting is 11^thFebruary at 18.30pm at the Village Hall. Everyone is welcome and refreshments will be provided.

 

WOMEN’S WORLD DAY OF PRAYER

This year the WWDP is on Friday the 1^st March. The service will be held at 2.00pm in St Michael & All Angels Church, Lyneham. All are welcome, including men, and there will be refreshments.

 

GENTLEMAN’S FULL ENGLISH BREAKFAST CLUB

The Gentleman’s Full English Breakfast Club will meet on Saturday 23^rd February 2019 at the REME Museum Crown’s café at MOD Lyneham.  The speaker this month is Tom Blundell.  9am for 9:30am start as usual.  The cost, however, has had to be increased to £8pp. + a bottle raffle.

BROAD TOWN WI

We are a friendly group and welcome new members.  Our meetings are generally held on the third Wednesday of the month in the Village Hall.  If you are interested in visiting us please contact Kate on 01793 731536.  We are also on the Broad Town Village website and on Facebook.

 

THE GUILD OF WILTSHIRE ARTISTS

Run workshops at the Village Hall on every first Friday and third Saturday of the month from 10am to 3pm.  All are welcome including painters who are beginners. The cost is still £5 per person per session which includes tea/coffee and biscuits but do bring a packed lunch.  Help will be given to those who request it.

Volunteers needed!!

Link6&RWB is a Good Neighbour scheme which, for the past 10 years, has been providing a much-needed service to residents of the villages of Bradenstoke, Broad Town, Bushton, Clyffe Pypard, Lyneham and Tockenham and RWB.  We are also supporting people in The Lydiards.

Due to recent increased demand we urgently need VOLUNTEER COMPANION DRIVERS

to take people to medical appointments, social engagements, shopping etc.

Would you like to volunteer for something flexible for just a few hours a week?

If you are a car owner/driver with a few spare hours a week, we would love to hear from you. We cannot pay our volunteers, but we do reimburse mileage.

We also need CO-ORDINATORS to answer the mobile phone and match our drivers to our clients’ requests – only basic computer skills needed, and it is working from home, a few hours a day for around one week per month on a rota basis. Ideal for somebody who can’t get out much, who would like more social interaction and do something worthwhile.

HELLO

Sometimes the name of a month brings an automatic thought to mind.  When I mentioned to ‘im indoors that I was writing for the February magazines I was, frankly, surprised when he said “February – Valentines Day!”, should I prepare for an extravagant gesture this year??  I guess when we think of Valentines Day we think of flowers and chocolates and cards with cute pictures on them.  In actual fact, it’s about caring and sharing.  With this in mind, ‘im indoors isn’t so very off the wall when he suggested writing about this for the magazines.  We all have neighbours, sometimes they are close and others can be across a couple of fields.  The question is:

Would you notice if the bins weren’t put out?

When did you last see them?

What did you say?

What is their name?

Would you give them a lift?

Would you water their plants when they’re away?

It's about knowing someone to say hello to and maybe to have a cup of tea with, knowing that someone is looking out for you and most of all including everyone, especially those people who can sometimes find life a bit tricky.  Go on, it’s easy to simply say “Hello”.  It’s only a word but could mean the world to someone who is feeling lonely.
