REV RACHMA ABBOTT

Thankfully we now have appointed a new Vicar for the Benefice of Woodhill (Broad Town, Clyffe Pypard, Tockenham and Hilmarton). Rachma comes to us from near Radstock. She will be licensed on the 20th April in Hilmarton Church and take up the post after then.

WHERE IS GOD?

We have all been appalled by the atrocities of the last few weeks and ask “Where is God in all of this?” The epistle of Jude tells us (interpretation by J. B. Priestly) “There will come mockers who live according to their own godless desires. These are the men who split communities, for they are led by human emotions and never the spirit of God”

Whatever religion we are talking about this must apply so all we can do is live to the best of our ability, follow the edicts of our religion and wait for the final judgement.

THANK YOU

The response to the Christmas collection for the Food Bank was far more than we expected. It was gratefully received. There is always a box in the Church for donations which can be given to any church member.

FAREWELL

Unfortunately we have had to say a fond farewell to Jeff Clewley. The family have lived in Broad Town for many years. Jeff was born in Oxford and moved to Broad Town with his parents. He had been a Parish Councillor, on the Village Hall committee, on the show committee and a School Governor. He started the Broad Town 5mile run as a fundraiser for the School. Golf was his passion.

He leaves a wife and two children.

CONCESSIONARY BUS PASSES

With effect from 1st April 2015 concessionary travel will start at 9.30am Monday to Friday. All journeys prior to 9.30am will be at the standard rate. This is a Wiltshire Council decision and brings Wiltshire into line with the rest of the country.

BROAD TOWN WI

At January’s meeting we discussed and voted on a shortlist of seven diverse resolutions. These will go before the National Federations Centennial AGM and the successful resolution will be used for the 2015 WI campaign.

Tracey Holland outlined her idea for a scrap book about Broad Town and its Women’s Institute in 2015, the year of the National WI Centenary and Broad Town’s 90th Birthday. She was inspired by a scrap book made by Wootton Bassett WI for the 50th anniversary in 1965, and now kept at the museum in the Town Hall.

Each month we will gather items for the scrap book so that future generations will see what life was like here. We hope to cover amenities and services, societies, flora and fauna, and businesses and professions of the residents.

February’s meeting is a talk by the Wiltshire Fire and Rescue service followed by a question and answer session and refreshments. This is an open meeting and guests are welcome. The meeting will be held at the Village Hall on Wednesday 18th February at 7.30pm. Please feel free to join us.

BROAD TOWN COMMUNITY LED PLANNING (CLP) GROUP

A (very belated !) Happy New Year to everyone.

There are two notable dates coming up soon in the Area Neighbourhood Plan calendar. The first is on 29th January when the NEW-V Area Steering Group next meets at Purton Bowls Club at 6.30pm. The second is on 9th February when Broad Town Parish Council meets to consider the draft Broad Town chapter of the Area Neighbourhood Plan. This could be an important meeting as the Parish Council may decide whether or not to accept the draft Plan that has been submitted by the CLPG. Both of these meetings are open to the public.

We have heard from Hannick Homes that 130 people attended their event and it is good to hear that so many people took an interest in what is going on locally.

The NEW-V Area Steering Group has circulated a draft Area Vision and Objectives for the whole of the area included in the Area Neighbourhood Plan and this is included on our Community Forum. The draft Plan being submitted to the Parish Council conforms to this document.

Please contact us if you would like to go onto our mailing list on lorraine@mrsbillis.co.uk. More information is on our Community Forum on www.broad-town.co.uk .

PARISH CLERKS CLIPPINGS

1. Closure of the bridge into Royal Wootton Bassett. About 80 people came to the briefing by Network Rail at the January PC meeting. The bridge will be closed later in the spring, but it is planned to build a temporary road to bring traffic out on the Lyneham side of the skew bridges before the closure..

2. Community Led Planning Group. The final report will be discussed at the. February meeting of the Parish Council.

3. There is still a vacancy for a Parish Councillor.

4. I am still getting reports of inconsiderate parking on Chapel Lane.

5.Tree and hedge cutting. Please look at your trees and hedges to ensure they do not impinge on roads or footpaths.

clip_image002Scams Great and Small

There have been a few nasty scams going around recently. Personally, I have several phone calls every day on both my home phone and my mobile. Some are easy to spot and I get particularly cross with the recorded message ones where they don’t even have the courtesy to give me a real person to rant at! Others are more believable and it is so easy to get caught up in their tale. I know of one person who had worked in a factory and so took up the offer of a “free” hearing check which may prove that she was entitled to compensation. She had the check and was advised that she needed hearing aids which would cost over £1,000. She was informed that unfortunately the loss of hearing may not be proved to be the fault of the factory although she could pursue it through their legal folk. She was told that it would be a long process and she should still purchase the hearing aids as they were necessary. Its not really a scam, but it is high pressure selling. Another gent took a call and was told that his bank account was being hacked into via the internet. He was advised that he needed to act quickly to stop this and, trustingly, our gent gave his bank details over. Sadly the caller took these details and several thousand pounds from the account. It is really easy to be sucked into these conversations and to believe what they say, but they are successful because they are expert liars! If you are not expecting the call, ask the caller to put their request in writing. If you are really not interested in “claiming back your PPI” or whatever, its ok to say NO and to cut the call. Never give bank details over the phone. It is possible to reduce cold callers using call blocking. This can be expensive, but it is an option.

Another recent scam is traders promising to complete work to a certain timescale. The case I heard of was when the salesperson promised the work be completed by mid August and the work was finally done early December. Their trick was to start the work and then delay returning to finish it. Good trades people will work to their promises so always try to get references.

As always, I’m here to help so give me a call on 07557 110414 or email me on rwbcrickladegnc@communityfirst.org.uk.

BROAD TOWN DOG WALKERS FEBRUARY WALK

If you would like to join a friendly group of local dog owners and their dogs for a social walk in the local area, we will be meeting in the Village Hall car park at 11am on Sunday 22nd February. All dogs and owners are welcome - we are always pleased to be joined by walkers without dogs. Expect muddy conditions!
We enjoyed a lovely sunny walk in January returning to the White Horse at Winterbourne Bassett for a drink and a warm welcome.
