In today’s world – the trappings and trimmings of Christmas can have an insidious way of taking over! In the busyness of this time of year, let’s make time to ensure the reason for the season is not lost!
Christmas is truly for everyone – the truth is that God comes to us before we come to him and whether we’re ready or not. In the Bible we read ‘God loved the world so much that he sent his only son’ – John 3:16 and ‘God showed his love for us that while we were still sinners Christ died for us’ – Romans 5:8. Many church-goers love the prayer after communion, which says ‘when you were still far off you met us in your son and brought us home’. It reminds us that God is coming towards us all the time, searching out ways to meet us and showing us just how much we are loved. Christians partly celebrate Christmas for ourselves, because we believe that God was born into our human existence in Jesus Christ to bring us back into relationship with him. We also celebrate Christmas for the world for the hope we have through Jesus Christ, and with longing that everyone experiences God’s peace and joy in their hearts.
May I take this opportunity to wish you all a very happy Christmas and a peaceful New Year, and I look forward to seeing you at the special worship for Christmas across the benefice of Woodhill.

PS – In January, we are starting a regular ‘family-friendly’ communion service on the 3rd Sunday of the month (January 17th at 11am) – Everyone of all ages will be made most welcome – so do come along and join us.
PPS - Also, please do put the date of our benefice of Woodhill celebration (31st January 10:30am at Clyffe Pypard) in your diaries and come along. That day, the Bishop of Ramsbury will be with us to celebrate our life together on the feast of the Presentation of Christ in the temple.

1) CHRISTMAS COFFEE MORNING IN CHURCH
Come and start the festive season with a tea/coffee and mince pie among convivial company for a good chat. The Christmas raffle will be drawn, there will be cakes and Christmas goodies on sale. Mr Male will have photographs for sale and Phoenix cards will also have a stall. The café will be open at the usual time of 10am – 12noon. We hope to see many of you there.
CHRISTMAS RAFFLE TICKETS
Have you got your tickets yet? The Christmas raffle tickets are now available – first prize £50 – from any member of the PCC. or by phoning Sara on 731114.
The draw will take place at the Christmas coffee morning in the village Church. Other interesting prizes.
2) WOOTTON BASSETT CHORAL SOCIETY
Annual Christmas Concert on Monday 14th December, at the Methodist Church, Wootton Bassett. Commencing at 8pm.
A wide range of seasonal Choral music, including Hallelujah Chorus in conjunction with the BBC's 250th Handel celebration.
Admission FREE Retiring collection.
4) BROAD TOWN CHURCH CAROL SERVICE
The whole village is welcome to truly bring in the last few days of Christmas with a rousing sing of the favourite carols. End the service with a good chat over mince pies and drinks to wish your neighbours the best of the season.
3) BROAD TOWN PRE-SCHOOL
Parents, children and staff enjoyed an Autumn cookout at our forest school with a range of activities including a forest story, charcoal rubbings, nature lotto and finding interesting materials in the woods.
Preparations are under way for our Christmas bazaar and Nativity Play. This year it is being held at Broad Hinton Village Hall on Wednesday 16th December from 9.30-11.30am. There are various stalls with cards, books, cakes and lots more for sale. We will be having a raffle with 3 fabulous hampers as prizes. Tickets can bought at the event. Come along and enjoy a cup of tea or coffee.
We have spaces available for 2,3 and 4 year olds. For further information contact Anne Knight on 731911.
5) BROAD TOWN SOCIAL CLUB
Broad Town Social Club is open on 24th December from 8pm and New Years Eve from 8pm to 1am, these will be normal club nights.
The last bingo before Christmas will be 19th December and then bingo will restart on the 3rd Jan 2010.
Membership renewal is due from the 1st Jan 2010. Fee £2.00. New members always welcome. The club is open on a Friday night from 8pm and Sunday night for bingo from 7pm.
The committee wish to thank all members for their continuing support and wish everyone a merry Christmas and a happy new year.
PARISH PLAN STEERING GROUP UPDATE
Just to keep you all informed, the data analysis is still on-going and we ask that you please bear with us as there are 305 responses to analyse. We're sure you remember just how big the questionnaire was and how much you had to complete and we hope, therefore, that you can appreciate the volumes we are processing.
A date for presenting the results to you will be planned for early in the New Year. We’ll let you know this date as soon as possible and will include it in the next Parish Newsletter.
BROAD TOWN SCHOOL VISIT TO SOUTH AFRICA
Over half term the head teacher, two teachers and the Finance Officer from Broad Town School went to visit their link school in Kwazulu Natal, South Africa.
They were made extremely welcome by the 5 class (approx 130 children) rural primary school in a beautiful area near the Drakensberg Mountains. Time was spent observing lessons and sharing planning and teaching techniques with the African teachers. They were also treated to some amazing displays of gospel singing and zulu dancing by the children.
Diaries, photos and videos of the children from both schools were exchanged.
Broad Town School had been fundraising for several weeks prior to the trip by doing bag packing at Sainsbury’s, face painting, car washing etc. With the money they bought books, story sacks, dressing up clothes, maps and a globe to boost the limited resources in the school.
They were also honoured to have a meal of typical zulu food in the home of two of the children from the school.
The week was an amazing experience for everyone and very much enjoyed by all.
BROAD TOWN COLT FC
We are a local under 9’s team who play home matches on the School Playing Field. Our team was established in September 2009 and play in Division 3 of the league. We are currently 4th having various results over the last few weeks, Won 3, Drawn 2, Lost 2.

6) BIG GIG 2010
Thanks to all who attended the Big Gig AGM in November - we have a newly elected committee comprising Marcus Galea (Chair), James Harvey-Samuel (Treasurer), Keith Newman (Secretary), Matt Parry, Gill Richardson and Graham Wallis. Our thanks go to outgoing members Rhian Sanders and especially to Chris King, who has given sterling service for every Big Gig to date and will be sorely missed!
We are turning our thoughts to 2010 (our 5th Big Gig) and would like your input into next year's event. What music do you like, do we cater for your needs, could we do anything to attract and entertain more of you? To this end, we are holding a very informal 'drop in' meeting in the Village Hall on Friday the 15th January, 8:30pm onwards. The Social Club will have the bar open, so please pop in and give us your feedback and ideas so we can give you what you want. We are also keen to hear from any other village organisations who may like to utilize the infrastructure - it seems a shame to have the Marquees up and not make more use of them. Our dates are currently flexible - we may hold the Big Gig earlier or later in the year - we might even get a spot of good weather!

7) CONCERT AND SCARECROW COMPETITION
We said there would be extras and a few are already arranged.
We have a concert in the village on June 11th 2010 and on the Saturday there will be a roving market with stalls in some of the open gardens. We are still hoping to persuade more of the gardeners of the village to open their gardens to the public at the same time. We know that there are some lovely gardens in the village of all shapes and sizes. We do not know who you all are personally, so please do not be shy. If you are willing to open your garden that weekend please contact Margaret Green on 731511.

THE GUILD OF WILTSHIRE ARTISTS
Run workshops at the Village Hall on every third Saturday of the month from 10am to 4pm. All are welcome including painters who are beginners.
