ON NEWNESS

‘Behold, behold I make all things new, beginning with you and starting from today.’ This John Bell song, drawing on texts from Revelation in the Bible (copyright by the Wild Goose Resource Group, 1995) has been singing itself in my head and I’ve been pondering newness.

Some newness is wonderful: the freshness of clean, new sheets, a new outfit, or if you’re like me, a new haircut and colour to mark a new beginning.

Sometimes oldness seems much more desirable.

Much as I have enjoyed the newness of signature buildings, like London’s Shard in a cityscape or TV news image, if I’m on a day out I’m more likely to visit an old one.

We may want new technology (until like me you are struggling with working out new icons that are part of a new version of Windows) but we often value old objects – especially if they are designated ‘antique’. The pleasures of easy conversation with an old and dear friend are not normally matched by newness in those we love, although, of course, who would tell you with delight that someone now had an ‘old’ baby?

The experience of being new here in this community both makes me seek solace and refuge in the comfortable and familiar, whether my rather battered armchair or my ‘same old’ husband and also excites me with the possibilities of new friends in the people I meet; of new things to learn and discover and of new and fun mistakes to make on my way to becoming a skilled ‘old hand’.

So I ponder, what helps you manage the scary wonder of ‘all things new’?

For me resources to find newness a joy and the reminder that I may need refreshing is in the second verse of that simple John Bell song:

Behold, behold, I make all things new, my promise is true, for I am Christ the way. © WGRG, Iona Community, 1995.

FAREWELL

Michael John Harris – Hazel, Andrew & Family would like to sincerely thank all who attended Michael’s funeral. Thank you to all who sent cards and messages of sympathy. We cannot thank you enough for the kindness shown to us. As most of you will know Michael was born in Wootton Bassett and first came to Broad Town in 1968 when he started Broad Town Cars. In 1984 Andrew joined the firm and made it what it is today. Michael will be remembered for playing his fairground organ and always tinkering with some project or other. He loved everything to do with the countryside and loved living in Broad Town. He will be sadly missed.

Rev John Goodman passed away on the 14th May. He was Vicar of Christ Church, Broad Town, from 1956 till 1965.

A PROPOSAL TO LET THOSE NEEDING A COMFORT BREAK FIND RELIEF.

The PCC of Christ Church, Broad Town, is working towards having an extension built on the Church for a toilet and a kitchen. This will be on the front of the Church. We have already approached Salisbury for initial approval and now more detailed plans are being drawn up for us to put to Salisbury for final permission. We also need permission from Wilts County Council.

The work will involve a stone extension to match the Church with a new front door (the old one will be kept as an inner door); the path will need altering; connections will be made into the main sewer and an archaeological survey will be done even though we are sure no graves will be affected.

The cost of the extension will be about £140,000.

HELP! HELP! HELP!

So we are turning to the village for help.

We know that there are grants out there if we make the correct applications. Please, is there anyone prepared to help with these applications?

We also hope there is someone who can help on the building side – checking that things are being done right etc.

We would like to make a small committee of church congregation and people from the village who are prepared to move it all along. Please do you have the expertise to help us?

We are sure we will have to raise some money ourselves and to this end we have two things planned so far.

Firstly we have a Harvest Supper on the 3rd October and secondly we are organising a Big Band concert in the Memorial Hall, RWB, in April 2016. We obviously hope that all tickets will be sold for these activities.

There will be our usual coffee morning in September and our Christmas coffee morning in December with the raffle.

Once the extension is done the building will be more user-friendly and available for secular activities.

BROAD TOWN PLAYPARK

Many thanks to those of you who returned the questionnaires about the playpark. We are starting to put together a list of equipment to purchase and in order to keep the costs down, and make maximum use of the funds, we will at some point need a team of helpers to clear some of the park for the fitters to install the equipment. If you are happy to go on a list so we can contact you nearer the time please email broadtownplaypark@hotmail.com or call 01793 739021.

THORNHILL TRAFFIC CONCERNS

There appears to have been a marked increase in road users in Thornhill recently – car drivers, lorry drivers, vans, trailers, horse riders, cyclists, dog walkers etc. The traffic is only set to get worse when the bridges close. Please can everyone be considerate to each other when using the road whether that be slowing down when in a car to allow time for a dog walker/horse rider to find a safe place to stop or moving over when on a horse to allow a car to pass. Also be mindful that people live on this road and will therefore be accessing their driveways, so please allow them the time to manoeuvre.

Thanks in advance from a fed up local.

BIG GIG 2015

The next Big Gig Committee meeting will take place in the Village Hall on Friday 12th June at 8.30pm. The meeting is open to everyone so come along to see what goes on.

BROAD TOWN WI

This month our speaker was Ged Fitzgerald and he advised us on 'How to Stay
Safe on the Internet'. He explained the necessity of having strong passwords, good antivirus software, only paying for goods on secure websites, never allowing anyone who contacts you by phone to have remote access to your computer and many other ways of keeping safe. He also told us about some of the scams that are out there. You have probably all had a call for someone who says they are from Microsoft and that they have detected errors on your computer and offer to correct them at a cost. This scam has been going for several years and Microsoft have received 64,000 complaints/enquiries about this. Bearing in mind most people will have just put the phone down and won't have contacted Microsoft it shows how widespread this problem is. It was a very interesting and informative talk.

Next month our meeting will be on the National Gardens' Scheme. Norman Jeffrey will talk on how the scheme started and some of the local gardens taking part this year. This meeting will be held at Broad Town Village Hall on Wednesday June 17th at 7.30pm. We are a friendly group and welcome new members. Our meetings are generally held on the third Wednesday of the month in the Village Hall. If you are interested in visiting us please contact Kate on 01793 731536 or look at our information on the Broad Town website.

IT'S OUR VILLAGE, IT'S OUR WHITE HORSE, IT'S OUR CHOICE.

Since the White Horse was restored back in the early 1990s, the upkeep of the horse has been done by successive groups of volunteers who have wished to maintain the appearance of the White Horse as a Broad Town landmark. The volunteers have been self-supporting raising money from village organisations on an annual basis. Some volunteers has been doing this work for over twenty years, unfortunately we have increasingly been reliant on people who live outside the village to maintain our icon.

Another challenge we are currently facing, is that volunteers are not insured, and should any injury occur, the liability for any claims would have to be met by the White Horse Restoration committee. Public liability insurance is available, but costs appear to be prohibitive.

Faced with the declining number of local volunteers, and insurance costs, the future of our village landmark is again under threat. What we need is a viable solution that will see us well into the next twenty years. The question is, whether we as a village want to keep our White Horse, and what are we collectively prepared to do about it. We urgently need the expertise of others in the village. We also need someone to take over from the current chairman who is stepping down this year.

To help resolve the issues, we have decided to call an emergency meeting on Tuesday 23rd June at 7:30pm in the Village Hall to explore all avenues.

It's our village, it's our White Horse. It's our choice.

BROAD TOWN COMMUNITY LED PLANNING (CLP) GROUP

Thank you to the many people who came to our May meeting, it was great to see you all.

The latest Neighbourhood Planning news at our meeting was that the Wiltshire Core Strategy, the document that states Wiltshire Council policy on development, has finally been published on the Wiltshire Council website. This is not a document for some light reading over a cup of coffee! However we recommend that you persevere as it contains the development policy for Small Villages such as Broad Town. The policy can be changed only through a Neighbourhood Plan. The Core Strategy can be found on www.wiltshire.gov.uk/core-strategy-adoption. We are looking into providing an easy-to –understand list of the specialist terms that it includes so that we can all get a better understanding of what it means for us.

We also agreed that a group of CLPG members would meet with Parish Councillors and Carolyn Gibson, the Wiltshire Council Planning Manager who guides the Area Steering Group, to look at progress on our draft Broad Town Plan.

We will be attending the next Area Steering Group meeting on 27th May when we hope to find out more about the local consultation and poll that is planned for the complete draft Neighbourhood Plan (that will include the draft Broad Town Plan as well as those for other villages within the area). A full report on this meeting will be given at the next CLPG meeting.

Our next meeting will be held at 7.30 p.m. to 9.30 p.m. on Monday 29th June at the Village Hall by which time we should have answers to all of the above. Please come along to find out what is going on and share your views, refreshments will be provided. Please contact us if you would like to go on to our mailing list on lorraine@mrsbillis.co.uk. More information is on our Community Forum on www.broad-town.co.uk/Community/Forums/

THE HISTORICAL SOCIETY OF ROYAL WOOTTON BASSETT PRESENTS: THE LOST CHAPEL OF BINCKNOLL: THE FIRST TWO SEASONS

Thursday 11th June 2015, Royal Wootton Bassett Conservative Club

Seated by 7.20pm for 7.30pm start, £3 entry

Excavation in the garden of a house at Bincknoll appears to have answered an age old local mystery – where was the chapel of Bincknoll? A number of finds recovered over the last two years excavations suggest that the location of the chapel has now been located. The work, undertaken during the late summer of 2014 and May/June 2015, is part of a collaborative community project between Broad Town Archaeology and the Wiltshire Archaeology Field Group.

Come and meet the team from Broad Town Archaeology, hear about what they have discovered and see some of the finds.

PARISH CLERKS CLIPPINGS

1. Mr Jason Bailiffe has been co-opted to fill the vacancy on the Parish Council.

2. Dog fouling, Pye Lane. A complaint has been received that a dog walker is picking up the dog's droppings in a plastic bag, and throwing them into the hedge. Not a pretty sight.

3. If you wish to check on a planning application, the Wiltshire.gov.uk website has all of the details, and you can file support or an objection on this site. I will put any formal notifications on the notice board.

BROAD TOWN DOG WALKERS

If you would like to join a friendly group of dog walkers for a walk in the local area we meet each month on a weekend around the middle of the month at around 11am. The date / walk / meeting place are agreed each month. We are always keen to have new walkers join us and our dogs enjoy meeting new friends. If you are interested please call/e-mail Annette on 07974763645 annette.moore@live.co.uk for more information. We are happy to e-mail you each month with dates and places so you can choose to walk or not.
All dogs and walkers are very welcome, we also welcome walkers without dogs.

SCHOOL FETE AND FUN RUN

The School fete and fun run is on Saturday 20th June.

The fete opens at 1.00pm and the fun run starts later. There will be the usual stalls including cakes and plants. There will be a BBQ and bar and the children will give demonstrations of dance and martial arts.
