REVEREND ALISON WAY

Christmas

clip_image002Over the next few weeks there will be the usual round of special services to mark the coming of the Christ child, the Emmanuel – which means ‘God with us’. If you would like to come to church with your children, can I particularly recommend the following:-

  • Our annual Christingle service supporting the Children’s Society on Sunday 12th December 4pm at St Giles Tockenham
  • Our special family service on Christmas Eve at 5pm at St Lawrence’s Church, Hilmarton. Please wear a nativity head-dress.
  • Our Christmas Day family communions at 9:15am in St Giles’ Tockenham and 11am in Christchurch Broad Town. Please bring an opened present.

More aimed at the ‘grown ups’ are our traditional carol services, one in each church across the benefice (12th December 6pm at St Lawrence’s Hilmarton; Thursday 16th December 6pm at Christchurch Broad Town; 19th December 5pm at St Peter’s Clyffe Pypard and 7pm at St Giles’ Tockenham. Midnight mass this year is at 11pm on Christmas Eve at St Peter’s Clyffe Pypard.

May I take this opportunity to wish you all a very happy Christmas and a peaceful new year, and I look forward to seeing you at the special worship for Christmas across the benefice of Woodhill.

If you would be interested in preparing for confirmation which marks the point in the Christian journey at which young people and adults take on their faith commitment for themselves and become full members of the Church, please get in touch with me by 24th January. The deanery confirmation service for 2011 is planned for evening of June 15th 2011, and will be hosted by St Bartholomew’s in Wootton Bassett.

With love in Christ, Alison Way

BROAD TOWN PARISH PLAN YOUTH CLUB GROUP

Thank you very much to everyone who put in lots of time and effort to try to get a Youth Club up and running in Broad Town. Unfortunately, although we had good offers of help for running the Youth Club sessions and events, it proved difficult to find people with sufficient time to complete all the paperwork and policies that are necessary in order to receive funding and insurance. The decision was therefore regretfully made to disband the group and discontinue the effort to provide a Youth Club for Broad Town. Special thanks to Niki, Teresa, Dan, Stewart, Brian, Hazel, Carol and Julie for their help and support, and also to Broad Town Social Club for providing a venue for our meetings. I hold lots of information and contact details provided by Wiltshire Council so if anyone would like to continue this work please let me know. Lorraine Billis tel. 731188

BROAD TOWN WI - Brayden Ales opening evening.

The Broad Town WI had its second open meeting in two consecutive months with yet another great attendance - it's amazing how many people will turn up when you mention the word 'beer'! Paul Harrison from Brayden Ales gave an absorbing talk about the company, which was set up by himself and two friends; he is clearly passionate and immensely knowledgeable about his subject. There were so many questions for Paul, as people clearly engaged with the topic, that we risked severely reducing the beer-drinking time. Fortunately, the questions dried up and the beer began to flow - Gaily Bagger and Pot Walloper being the two brews on offer. The beer names are all chosen from the Wiltshire dialect and include YerTiz, Gibbles and Mooned-up, which we all agreed were a wonderful idea.

Broad Town WI meets every 3rd Wednesday in the month, apart from this December when we will meet on 8th for a fun night of jewellery making. Visitors and new members are always warmly welcomed, so please feel free to contact Jenny (President) tel: 739268 or Jenni (Secretary) tel: 731716

BROAD TOWN SOCIAL CLUB

On Friday 17th December we are holding an Avon party from 8.30pm. This will be a clearance sale, so why not come and pick up a bargain.

The Christmas draw has now started and is selling well, this is open to all members. The Christmas draw and bingo is NOW SUNDAY 19th and not the 18th December. Doors will open 7pm. This will be the last bingo for 2010 and will restart on 2nd January 2011.

The Social Club will be open on Friday 24th December and Friday 31st December. Doors open 8pm.

Membership is due on the 1st January. The social club is open on Friday's from 8pm. Why not come along and try our NEW pool table and enjoy cheap bar prices, we are also open on a Sunday evening for bingo which starts at 8pm. Doors open 7:30pm. Membership is only £2 for the year (Jan to Dec)

Broad Town Social Club would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

BROAD TOWN BIG GIG

Following on from the great success of the Big Gig in September, your committee have considered the applications for funding from local groups. We had already invested over £2000 in the new stage cover earlier in the year and we donated nearly £750 to Help for Heroes. This has meant that the sum available for other village organisations and good causes is less than previous years. However, we have still distributed £760 as follows:

Broad Town Colts £100 (for shelter)

Broad Town WI £150 (for speakers)

Broad Town School £150 (for speakers)

Broad Town White Horse £150 (for upkeep lime)

Broad Town Christchurch £150 (towards notice board)

Newsletter £60 (production costs)

We hope that these contributions to such worthy causes are helpful. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who contributed to this year's event and would encourage all organisations to take an early interest in next year's Big Gig - we hope to offer groups the opportunity to promote themselves and raise funds through their own efforts on site - watch this space. www.broadtownshow.co.uk
