REVEREND ALISON WAY

Following the excitement of the benefice of Woodhill celebration (31st Jan 2010 – 10:30am with the Bishop of Ramsbury at St Peter’s in Clyffe Pypard), in the middle of February Lent starts. After this our church worship will reflect this time of preparation for remembering the crucifixion of Christ on the first Good Friday and his resurrection on the first Easter day.

This year across the benefice we will be running 3 weekly Lent discussion groups through the weeks of Lent – hopefully there will be one at a time you can attend. The summary of the groups is as follows: -

  • Thursday evenings at 7:30pm – 48 Poynder Place, Hilmarton, starting 18th Feb – contact Elaine on 01249 760537
  • Monday afternoons at 2pm – the old forge cottage, Tockenham Corner, starting 22nd Feb – contact Ken and Pauline on 01793 854157
  • Wednesday lunch times at 12 noon – Hurstbridge, Pye Lane, Broad Town, starting 24th Feb 12 noon – contact Janet on 01793 850931 and bring a packed lunch to munch

Do get in touch with the contact of the group you want to attend or me to let us know you are coming (and for directions or any questions). Do feel free as diary commitments dictate to hop between the groups (and at the first session the group leaders will be able to advise on the venues for all the subsequent weekly meetings through Lent). These groups will be looking at the same material, which looks at being fully alive - ‘living the life of faith in Jesus’. Lent is a great time to take stock and to dig deeper into our faith – and a good way to start it is to attend our special benefice communion for Ash Wednesday, which will take place on 17th February at 7:30pm at Christchurch Broad Town

Wishing you a holy Lent

TOCKENHAM SUNDAY SCHOOL

This is run by Kim Gough in Tockenham Village Hall from 9.15am - 10.15am. The dates are 14th February and 28th February. To contact Kim her phone number is 01793 849878.

DEATHS

It is with regret we note the passing of two members of the community since the last Newsletter.

Mrs Iris Cox died at the end of November, leaving a daughter. She and her late husband retired to “The Fields” from “Churchill House”. She was involved with the Broad Town Dog Club.

Mr John Watts died in January, leaving three children and several grandchildren. He did his national service in the Army. He had lived in the Village over 35 years. He was a colourful figure and was once familiar on a motor bike, but more recently on the bus.

4) VILLAGE STEERING COMMITTEE

At last, we're there!! The Parish Plan Steering group are pleased to announce the date for presenting to you the results of the recent questionnaire. So please make a note in your diary to come along to Broad Town Village Hall on Friday, 26 March, and join us at 7pm for a coffee or tea before a 7.30pm start. The bar will open at 9pm following the presentation and a Q & A session. We received 220 completed questionnaires, which represents 88% of the households in the Parish, an incredible result by any standard, for which we thank you. This shows just how much you care about your Parish. Special thanks to our data analyst, who has voluntarily given us many hours of her time. Thank you also to the Social Club Committee who has kindly let us 'kidnap' their Friday evening. Meanwhile, we wish you all a very happy New Year, and look forward to seeing you on the 26th March.

PARISH COUNCIL

1 REDHILLS. The Parish Council has received complaints that car owners are using the turning circle at the top of Redhills for parking. Please remember it is there to enable vehicles to TURN.

2 GRIT BINS. During the recent cold spell grit bins were being emptied by local people for their own use. The grit is there to keep traffic moving; taking it for your own use is theft.

2) BROAD TOWN WI

The first Broad Town WI meeting of 2010 was a well attended discussion of the 5 proposed WI Wiltshire federation resolutions for this year. The topics ranged from "Country of origin food labelling" to "Save our local pub". The pros and cons of each resolution were carefully considered before sending an individual voting slip to the Wiltshire federation WI HQ in Devizes for the topic we felt to be most important for this year's national WI campaign issue. Once the weighty business matters were completed, refreshments in the form of a selection of puddings were consumed and enjoyed with plenty of chat.

The next WI meeting will be on Wed. 17th Feb in the village hall at 7.30 for a talk on “Gorillas in the midst of conflict” given by Mr I.Perry. Visitors are warmly welcomed

3) FILMS AT HILMARTON

Hilmarton PCC and Moviola present the following film. Saturday 20th February – Julie & Julia (12A). Start at 7:30pm (Doors open 7:00pm). Tickets £5 each - available from Hilmarton Post Office or phone Geoff Procter on 01249 760312

5) CONCERT AND SCARECROW COMPETITION

We said there would be extras and a few are already arranged.

We have a concert in the village on June 11th 2010 and on the Saturday there will be a roving market with stalls in some of the open gardens. We are still hoping to persuade more of the gardeners of the village to open their gardens to the public at the same time. We know that there are some lovely gardens in the village of all shapes and sizes. We do not know who you all are personally, so please do not be shy. If you are willing to open your garden that weekend please contact Margaret Green on 731511.

6) BIG GIG 2010

We have a date! Having consulted the various sporting and entertainment calendars, we are pleased to announce that the 5th Broad Town Big Gig will take place on Saturday the 4th September 2010. Thanks to all those who turned up on Friday 15th Jan to our informal open evening. We had a lively discussion around music, other possible entertainment, site layout and when to hold the Big Gig and we hope to implement some of the suggestions this year. We will be looking for suitable bands / artists in the next few months, plus searching for sponsors to help out with the financials, so if you have any suggestions for either, please get in touch. Are there any village organisations / individuals out there who could make use of the marquees and other facilities for a village event around that time? Perhaps you’ve thought about resurrecting the flower / produce show, a village BBQ or Pig Roast, some kind of sporting event with a social element? The Big Gig committee would be delighted to provide advice and moral support if needed; it would be great if we could give the village two remarkable events and bring the community together. Feel free to drop us an email on biggig@broadtownshow.co.uk or telephone 739268 with any suggestions for sponsors and / or bands, or more information on the use of the marquees. www.broadtownshow.co.uk
