REVEREND ALISON WAY

Remembering in hope. In the Old Testament in the book of Ecclesiastes, there is a famous passage that says ‘For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven: ^ a time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted;’ These ancient words help us as we move through the natural seasons year on year and through the different seasons and experiences of our lives. Life seasons can include times of new beginnings, times of great surprise and joy and times of sadness and bereavement. When we lose those special or close to us through their death, everyday life can be difficult and remembering even the happiest of times painful. Even as the months and years pass following a bereavement, things are never quite the same with travelling on in life finding a different rhythm. In this journeying it can be helpful to find ways to honour, cherish and remember our lost loved ones now at peace and at rest with our loving heavenly Father God. This kind of remembering is just one aspect of our annual benefice-wide service in commemoration of our departed, called “Remembering in Hope”. This takes place at Christchurch Broad Town at 5:00pm on 7^th November, allowing us an opportunity to give thanks to God for those who have been significant in our lives and have died. If you wish there is also an opportunity at this service to light a candle in their memory and to pause in the loving heart of our Father God in our worship. If you wish to have a loved one remembered by name at the ‘Remembering in Hope’ service, please let me have their full name by getting in touch with me at the usual phone number or e-mail address, or by writing the name clearly in the “Remembering in Hope” book, which will be available at Church worship during October.

WHITE HORSE CLEANING

Sunday 10^th October, 10 o’clock

We are intending to clean off the horse for the winter on 10^th October. The idea is to remove weeds and re-trim the edges where necessary. There will be NO liming (this will be in April). If you would like to attend please let Bob Clarke know prior to the event. Clothing should include good footwear. Garden tools such as trowels, spades and rakes, if you can bring them, are effective. Tea and cakes afterwards at East Farm House. If it’s raining please phone on the morning of the 10^th for a final decision on whether to come.

Please note there is NO vehicular access to the horse, cleaners will need to access the site on foot from Chapel Lane.

"A SOLDIERS LIFE IN THE TRENCHES" an illustrated talk - speaker Steve Williams WEDNESDAY 20TH OCTOBER 7.30PM IN THE VILLAGE HALL

Come and experience the life of an ordinary soldier in the trenches during World War 1. We are building a replica trench in the Village Hall (rats and all !!) and our speaker will be in uniform. Entry £3 (children free) to include WI refreshments. We will have poppies, poppy pins and a collecting box for the Royal British Legion. We hope everyone will support the Poppy Appeal. So that we know how many cakes to bake (!) – if you would like to come or would like more information could you ring 731526 or email mrs2mac@sky.com

This has been a busy month for the Broad Town WI. On Monday 13th September 25 members had a guided tour of Prince Charles' gardens at Highgrove. The rain managed to hold off for most of the two and a half hour tour, even though it was rather chilly for the end of summer. The grounds are a delight, with a different style around every corner and many of the garden areas incorporating gifts which have been presented to Prince Charles. HRH is very hands-on with his garden in planning, designing and even planting much of it - he was told his Thyme Walk would never work, but he was not convinced and his confidence was rewarded; his Thyme Walk is one of the iconic images of Highgrove House. We finished the tour with a much welcome hot drink and cake, before a visit to the shop to spend money!

In our regular WI meeting this month we were treated to a fascinating and informative talk by Mrs Bridget Duff on the topic of 'Diet, bones and osteoporosis'. Whilst osteoporosis is considered a women's disease it is a condition which also affects one in five men over the age of 50! Amongst her props Bridget had Crunchy and Aero bars to demonstrate what our bones look like at various points in our lives. She then took us through the calcium content of many food stuffs and some were quite a surprise; did you know that during the Second World War white flour and margarine had calcium added to them and this practice continues even today? We were delighted to find out that chocolate is a good source of calcium - so no need to feel guilty when you next eat your favourite bar!

Broad Town WI meet every third Wednesday of the month. Our next two meetings on 20th October and 17th November are open meetings where anyone is welcome to come along. As you may be aware the meeting in October is 'A Soldier's life in the trenches' presented by Mr S Williams, which is certain to be a very educational event for the whole family. For our November meeting the Yertiz Brewery will be visiting and bringing some of their wares for us to sample, so please do join us and enjoy an interesting talk with a pint or two. There will be more information about this in the next BT Newsletter.

BROAD TOWN PARISH PLAN YOUTH CLUB GROUP

Can you help us to set up a Youth Club in Broad Town? A small group of us have made a good start and we have:

· Formed a link with the Wiltshire Council Youth Development Officer and with Youth Action Wiltshire;

· Found out what paperwork needs to be completed;

· Ascertained which organisations can be approached for funding;

· Received offers from adult leaders, young leaders and parent helpers to organise the youth club sessions.

We now need committee members to put a framework in place to ensure that our young people attending the youth club are safe and well-looked after. Can you give some time to this worthwhile project? Broad Town Youth Club needs YOU! to make it happen. A meeting will be held at 8 pm on Friday 8^th October at the Village Hall for interested people of all ages to help us to set up a Youth Club. This is the final meeting to be set up by the Parish Plan Youth Club Group. If there is insufficient support the Group must disband and plans for the Youth Club will not be able to go ahead. BROAD TOWN SHOW

Thank you for turning up in such numbers on the 4^th September and making the 5^th Broad Town Big Gig the best yet. We’ve received fantastic feedback which is inspiring us to go on to better things in 2011! We are still working out the detailed financials, but have committed to adding to the collection buckets / other donations (which came to an impressive total of just under £290), to make an overall donation of £750 to Help for Heroes. Thank you to everyone who gave.

We could not put on the Big Gig without the financial, physical and emotional support of our sponsors, our friends, people from the village and our long suffering partners, so no apologies for a word of thanks to: Ray and Maybell Bourton for use of the land, Advanced Domestic Solutions, IMSM Ltd, Broad Town Cars, Complete Glazing Services, Rapid Hire, Broad Town Social Club, Broad Town W.I., Wootton Bassett Rotary, Collins Sound (great sound and lights), Martin Ranscombe (Drum Fun), Broncos R Us, Wiltshire Waste, WGS Power, Braydon Ales, everyone who helped put up the tents, helped prepare and clear up the site or worked on the gate, all the great bands that kept us entertained and anyone else we may have forgotten. Finally a mention and a bit of recognition for your Big Gig committee: Marcus Galea, James Harvey-Samuel, Keith Newman, Matt Parry, Gill Richardson and Graham Wallis.

We do need to recoup some of this year’s expenditure on stage cover and other sundries, however there will be some money for distribution amongst village organisations – please contact any of the committee above or email biggig@broadtownshow.co.uk should your organisation require financial assistance, by the 31^st October 2010.

BROAD TOWN SOCIAL CLUB

The social club will be holding their AGM on 22^nd October . This your chance to have your say how the club is run and to elect your committee and maybe join the committee yourself if you have some time to spare, hope to see you there. Meeting starts at 8:30pm.

The social club Halloween party will be held on 29^th October at the Village Hall from 8pm entry £1 per head. Entertainment by parmes disco.

Prizes for (under 16's only) fancy dress and best pumpkin. Lantern parade, meeting at Broad Town School at 7:30pm.

The Christmas draw has now started and is selling well, this is open to all members.

The social club is open on Friday's from 8pm. Why not come along and try our NEW pool table and a enjoy cheap bar prices, we are also open on a Sunday evening for bingo

which starts at 8pm doors open 7:30pm. Membership is only £2 for the year (Jan to Dec)

BROAD TOWN NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH

Sufficient volunteers have been forthcoming to allow the Broad Town Neighbourhood Watch to be launched. Over the next few weeks every Broad Town resident should have an invitation to become a member posted through their door; please fill these forms out and return them to your street coordinator.

For your information, our Neighbourhood Policing Team holds street briefings to allow you the chance to speak directly to them about local issues that may be of concern to you. The next one is scheduled for 10^th at 8.30am and PC Porter & PCSO Singfield will be available in the Broad Town Village Hall car park to answer any questions.

BROAD TOWN PARISH COUNCIL

1. The Village Information Leaflet contains two errors:

a. Parish Council. Mrs J. Newman's number should be 739268

b. PCC Officers. Carolyn Crocker is no longer the Secretary. All enquiries should be sent to the Church Wardens.

2. The autumn is upon us; bonfire season. Please be considerate when lighting bonfires, particularly dense smoky ones.

3. Footpaths. The Parish Council is starting to walk the footpaths in the Village to see what needs to be done to bring them up to scratch. If you have a footpath on or near your property may we ask that you ensure that it is passable.
