Easter - coming soon to a Church near you!

April is a busy time in the Church Calendar and do factor joining us for worship into your plans as Spring develops and there is a lot to choose from.  From a family celebration of Mothering Sunday, the hosannas of Palm Sunday, through to the intimacy of Maundy Thursday, the prayerful simplicity of Night Prayer and the depth of Good Friday, and the joy of Easter itself there should be something for everybody. 

There is a children’s work shop on Saturday 16th April between 10am to 11:30am at Hilmarton Church Hall.  This is open to primary school aged children, and please do get in touch with me to book your children their places (so we have enough resources for everybody).  We will be particularly thinking about the first Palm Sunday and Jesus riding into Jerusalem on a donkey and it is sure to be good fun.

Again – can I particularly recommend the first service to mark Easter - which starts with a vigil and then the first communion of Easter on Saturday 23rd April at 9pm in St Lawrence Hilmarton.  This really special service engages all the senses and the traditional elements.  It includes lighting our special Easter candle from a bonfire and welcoming the resurrection in song, and celebration (please bring something with which to make a joyful noise).

“GOODBYE.”

It is with regret that we have to say “Goodbye” to another long standing member of the village. Rita Taylor had lived in the area for many years; moving to Redhills from Thornhill. She had worked as housekeeper to a local farmer as well as dinner lady at the school. She is survived by 4 children, 10 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.

Thank you to all who came to eat our pancakes. We made £134.00 towards the Church funds.

Our next event is on the 30^th April when we will be selling plants and having books either for swapping or buying.

CONGRATULATIONS

Well done to Alice Clarke for achieving her pilot’s licence. Her first solo flight was on Sun. 13^th March. She has to wait till she is 17 in September before she can hold a full licence.

BROAD TOWN WI

March was an open meeting at Broad Town WI with anyone from the parish able to attend. Our guest speakers were Alan and Shirley Fletcher who came to talk about Guide Dogs for the Blind in Swindon – a charity they have been passionately involved with since Alan was officially registered blind in 2005. Everyone I spoke to afterwards said how impacted and moved they were by the talk and how much they’d learned of a blind person’s experiences. Alan talked of the difficulties in making his way around the house – which is a familiar environment – so a trip outside unaided was unthinkable and Alan spent many months trapped at home! Our third guest was Joy, Alan’s beautiful guide dog. The affection and trust between man and dog was plain to see; Joy has given Alan a completely new lease of life, from being house bound to regaining his independence – with Joy’s guidance he can now make his own way to the post box, the pub and Marks and Spencer! Shirley told us about the breeding, raising and ‘walking’ of puppies. The cost of providing a puppy is enormous – about £50,000 per dog and the demand is great, not least because the charity promises that once someone has been given a guide dog they will be provided with one for the rest of their life. It’s a huge promise. But from hearing Alan’s story it’s clear this promise is a real gift; a Guide dog is such an amazing lifeline to a blind person and a real example of a dog being man’s best friend.

The meeting in April is on the 20^th the subject “Gardening made easy”. Broad Town WI meet every third Wednesday in the month and we always welcome new members. If you would like to know more feel free to contact me – Jenny (president) on 739268 or Jenni (secretary) on 739268

BROAD TOWN WHITE HORSE

Calling all limers! White Horse session 10^th April from 10 o’clock

There will be a White Horse cleaning and liming session on Sunday 10^th April from 10 o’clock. Please attend if you can. We will be removing scrub from just below the horse, weeding and finally liming. As with previous years please bring along tools for the job and remember there is no vehicular access to the horse beyond the end of Chapel Lane. Some parking is available in the lay-bys at East Farm House and next to Manor Farm access. Tea and cakes at East Farm House afterwards – all welcome.

BIG GIG – 3rd September 2011
The number of bands asking to play at the Big Gig has exceeded 50, hence the delay in announcing our artists on Facebook. However we are making progress and can reveal the line-up so far, with as broad a range of music and more bands than ever before! If you’re a bit of an old folky, you will thoroughly enjoy Itchy Feet. If it’s full on pop you want and you like feline dancers, MEOW will get you in a (cat) flap. We’ve full on Indie from The Wutars and full on rock from The Dacoits, plus if you like an upbeat folk/pop outfit with thought provoking lyrics, then AlicebanD are for you. Still on their world-record-breaking-box-office-busting global tour and headlining Glastonbury this year, guess who is coming to Broad Town? Yup, U2-2, the UK’s top U2 tribute band will be making September the 3^rd a Beautiful Day. And we are also delighted to have again the special talents of Kicaberry. Phew! And there’s more band news in the pipeline! All this will necessitate our earliest start yet, so get the Gig in your diary and make a festival of it. Tickets will be available towards the end of April.

We’ve decided, given this is the last year of repatriations at Royal Wootton Bassett, to repeat our support Help for Heroes – a proportion of the profits will go straight to this worthwhile cause. Credit to them, U2-2 has generously agreed to dramatically reduce their usually large fee in support of H4H.

Our search for sponsors is also getting results. Advanced Domestic Solutions (http://www.ads-home.com) have generously agreed to be our Marquee Stage sponsor, so if you’re thinking of a new bathroom or kitchen, please consider them. For all you other local businesses, we know times are hard but please follow the lead of ADS - you can contribute as little or as much as you like. You can sponsor a band, a stage, the tickets, the wristbands or the whole event. You can advertise in the programme. We can publicise your contribution, or if you want to be an anonymous donor, then we can manage that as well – don’t forget sponsorship is a legitimate business expense and tax deductable. THE GUILD OF WILTSHIRE ARTISTS

Run workshops at the Village Hall on every third Saturday of the month from 10am to 4pm. All are welcome including painters who are beginners.

Tea and Coffee provided but do bring a packed lunch.
